It will be the JRU BOMBERS this time.

San Sebastian would most likely be their opponents.

The Knights will be good at 3rd and MIT Cardinal at 4th place.

SanBeda, w/out an Ekwe, Escobal, Menor and probably Hermida might drop out of the F4 this year.

JRU - tingin ko ito ang "team to beat" sa season 85 and the only team na secured na ang F4 slot.

Letran / Baste / Mapua / Beda = "royal rumble" sila for the 3 remaining slots.

Anyway, prediction lang naman... who knows, CSB and Perpetual might even snatch a championship slot by surprise.

the problem with san beda was, except for a few games near the end, ekwe, escobal, hermida, menor, pasqual were on the floor for most of the games. You are taking away 3 (or 4) of this? that might be too much to handle. of course sudan daniels is the x-factor. but i think it is too much to put the burden of 3-4 starters on a rookie.

letran still has main man jazul, guevarra is more mature and remains explosive. a more experienced del rosario, and finally a heralded rookie (possible) in kevin alas.

i don't like to make predictions but at least on paper, letran seems to have the edge.

it will be a very tough season for the mapua cardinals because a most of their front liners are already graduated and it is a great adjustments for the arising stars of the cardinals as well as their new coach to sustain an unpredictable moves to surprise the others teams for the season :)

Backreading the posts here, one will know who are the dreamers. :rotflmao:

And that 1999 - 2005 whatever that is is a thing of the past. Now that recruitment is for the high rollers, I am not sure how Letran will figure prominently.

Since the NCAA is currently just a 7-member affair, entering the Final 4 should not be too difficult since all that one has to do is to beat 3 other schools.

Letran's recruitment is slowly but surely declining, especially if the coach does not even want his own son to play for the school he coaches.

No offense meant but unless Letran is able to attract blue chip recruits, the decline in recruitment will lead to a bottomless pit.

And that is my final post on this issue. :)

The talk is Kevin Alas is heading to DLSU and early reports do not indicate that any blue chip rookie is going to Intramuros. Even their post season line-up looks the same and without suitable replacments for the likes of Daa, Cabonce, Melegrito, Dangcal, Gutilban, etc. Sure, Louie Alas is a good coach but at this time and age recruitment is now key to winning.

BTW, what's Alas' connection to Letran other his coaching contract? He went to Adamson for college but where did he study in high school?

On Topic:

It's safe to concede the 1-2 spots to SBC and JRU (or vice-versa).

SSC will take the 3rd semis slot

It will be a tight chase for the final spot among the remaining teams.

Yes, Letran is not one of those who attract blue chip players through money, etc. All that Letran can offer is education and some allowance from the school.

Letran's recruitment program is declining? how come? basis? Last year we got Jam Cortez from lyceum and peformed quite well during his first stint with the Knights. Again, we only offer education and allowance.

San Beda will win a do-or-die battle for the fourth and final spot.

The Red Lions will beat the 1st seeded team in 3 games.

SBC will win game 1 of the finals, will win the second game and there will be celebration and thousands of drunk Bedans along Mendiola.

The next day, it will be announced that 2nd game will be forfeited and will be awarded to the opponent because Sudan wore the wrong uniform.

Third game... San Beda wins via a hailmary heave from halfcourt, a buzzer-beater no less... in double overtime!

More drunk Bedans in Mendiola.

Success!!!

"coach does not even want his own son to play for the school he coaches"? hindi naman sa ayaw eh, parang gusto lang ni Coach Louie na magtry si Kevin sa ibang school. binibigyan niya lang ng choice yung bata kung gusto niya mag-stay sa Letran or maglaro sa ibang schools. and, bakit namin ipagpipilitan ang isang "Blue Chip" na mag-aral sa Colegio player kung pwede naman naming gawing star ang isang average player? we can't promise to give them cars, house & lots, etc. basta may allowance sila, education and kung may potential talaga, pwede silang maging star.:)

Uhmmmm.....Jam Cortez was not exactly a blue chip recruit and Letran is the only school which recruited him. It was not as if Cortez had many options.

I think you did not understand the post you are reacting to. Shaqmonster did not say that Letran will not be able to recruit. Of course, Letran will still get recruits. But the question is, what kind of recruits? Left-overs? Rejects? Like Gutilban perhaps? Or Foronda?

FYI, even Letran Squire Roj Sumang started trying out with SBC in January and UE in February. Just don't know where he will eventually be accepted.

And I suggest we leave "we only offer education" out of the discussion. It's not credible, in the first place, and you will only invite scrutiny on Letran's academic standards.

If you read between the lines, its him who started the issue on the decline on the recruitment? thats why im asking if there is any basis? So far, no proof has been given. Personally, i can answer that. MONEY. But sad to say, that does not preclude Letran to develop players regardless if they are your so-called rejects, leftovers. After all, we developed players who came from the low-profiled schools and some remote areas in the provinces. Kerby Raymundo and Willie Miller as a classic example. Where are they now? They're just only a BPC and 2-time MVP of the PBA.

We do only offer Education and some allowances from the school for the record. If you think its not credible, its up to you. Scrunity on Letran's academic standards? sure why not? this is a democratic country. If my memory serves me right, this is NCAA Tourney not Academe. The Education and some allowances thing is only in support in my argument in the recruitment issue.

IT'S JRU vs. SAN SEBASTIAN in the FINALS!

It's JRU's time to shine. With the core of last year's team still intact and with the addition of Etame, I see no reason why JRU won't reach the finals and grab the crown. The odds are 10-1 in favor of JRU winning the title.

San Sebastian has been on fire with Agustin calling the shots. The morale in Recto is quite high and good recruits were snagged from central luzon. But I still believe that SSC still needs a year or two before it can finally bring home the bacon.

Of course Melegrito is irrepleaceable.
sharpshooter Kevin Alas might even go to LASalle.
So talent-wise Letran will be below everyone's list: below San Beda, below JRU, even below Baste. But every season, Alas just gets the best out of his players NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE. I don't see anything different next year. With Alas on the helm, the final four is almost a given. But Alas can only do so much. Winning it all depends on the players...how much they want it.

IMHO lang ito okay? hehehe, walang mapipikon, prediction ko lang

Final four (random order :) )
Beda (malakas pa rin naman eto, di dapat maliitin)
Baste (lumalakas sila, I think :) )
JRU (okay pa rin ang lineup, isa ring di dapat ismolin)
Letran (solid pa rin ang line-up, ;) )

dark horse team:
Mapua (walang Pascual, Mazo at Dela Pena, at mukhang wala pa ring Banal {may ACL injury}... pero meron silang mga potential players pang nakaupo like Cornejo and Guillermo, at syempre may Mangahas pa)

hehe, siguro naman, halata kung saan ako nagchi-cheer no? heheh, yung sa ibang team, IMHO lang yan okay?! wala sanang magreact ng oa diyan..

In my opinion since they are guest teams, exhibition matches are what we can expect. They can play different NCAA teams but their wins or losses do not amount to anything but respect and a chance to become members. Same thing applies to regular members, a win by any NCAA member school against the guest schools would not merit an improvement in rankings. I think that is the NCAA MANCOM and Policy Board's main game plan.

Hmmm, now that you've mentioned a performance cash bond then I guess the race just got complicated, if that is the case! Arellano and EAC can beat teams like benilde and perpeptual but not the big boys from SBC, JRU, SSC or even letran.

The line-ups of Arellano and EAC are no longer as strong as before plus most of their players may not be eligible to playb under the more stringent NCAA rules.

NCAA up to 10 teams in Season 85
04/24/2009 | 08:10 PM
– GMANews.TV

MANILA, Philippines – It is now official.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will parade 10 teams after the three schools they invited to join as guest participants in Season 85 agreed to join the league this year.

League president Fr. Mat De Jesus, OSB, of San Beda College Friday made the announcement following the decision of Arellano University, Angeles University Foundation and Emilio Aguinaldo College to accept the conditions they earlier set.

“All three schools accepted the invitation and conditions so we are having 10 teams this season," said De Jesus.

In a two-page letter, all three schools agreed to field in teams not just in mandatory sports such as basketball, football, swimming, volleyball, cheerleading, and athletics. They also have an option to take part in the other events.

Arellano, AUF, and EAC also agreed to pay a guest fee amounting to P1.5million plus a bond of P500,000. The bond will be refunded at the end of the season provided that the schools will not incur a penalty that requires cancellation of the bond.

The three would also have to abide by the NCAA constitution and by-laws, ground rules and all other league rules and regulations. They should also respect the decisions of the policy board and management committee each chaired by De Jesus and Jose Mari Lacson, also of San Beda.

In case of court cases, the school athletes, coaches and other team officials must agree to arbitrate any and all disputes that may arise from fielding a team in Season 85.

The San Beda rector pointed out though that being guest teams is entirely different from being member schools.

“The policy board, by inviting your school to field guest teams in Season 85, is not admitting your school as a member of the NCAA or giving due course to your application," said de Jesus. “The process of selecting additional NCAA members is entirely separate and distinct from the fielding of guest teams and this invitation is not a precedent for guesting in future seasons."

Philippine Christian University (PCU), which took an indefinite leave of absence this year, may reapply for this season for inclusion in NCAA’s Season 86.

The 2009 edition would have its opening ceremonies on June 27 at the Araneta Coliseum followed by senior’s basketball games.

I think refundable yung P.5 million after ng season and they are not required to pay the P1.5 million entrance fee since they are not joining as members.

FEARLESS FORECAST

Basketball Final Four:

San Beda
San Sebastian
Letran
Jose Rizal

Champion-San Sebastian College
1st runner up-San Beda College

NCAA Cheerleading Competition

Champion-Perpetual
1st runner up-Benilde
2nd runner up-Mapua

Last year's champions will settle for 5th or 4th place in the ranking. Perpetual won the 2009 National Cheerleading Competition,so they will most likely do the same thing in the NCAA because they still have the winning spirit burning within them. Same with DLS-CSB, Benilde Pep,won 1st runner up in the 39th WNCAA Cheerdance Competition. So same as Perps, they still have the winning spirit and the confidence to at least go a notch higher or retain their position in the top 3. *okay*

I don't think guest teams who perform way beyond expectations can qualify for the semis. Unless the NCAA Board provides us with rules regarding the guest teams. They just defined them as guests so it could really be just exhibition matches. But if they do retain such wins and use the stats against regular members then it might mean trouble for the rest of the weaker member teams. :D

The NCAA Bboard should clarify some things before mag-start ang season 85. Like yung sa guest teams. Kapag nakalaban ba ng regular member ang guest team, may magbabago sa W?L record nung particular regular member or simpleng exhibition game lang ang mangyayari.

JRU
San Beda

Champ : Letran

Semi-finals :
Letran- San Beda ( San Beda will be all out to win it but Letran's experience will not be shaken..)

JRU- SSC (JRU's nagging injuries to some key players may hamper their chances )

Finals : SSC- Letran

..........San Beda's Frankie Lim era will come to an end. Louie Alas will bring back the trophy to Intramuros.....Now or never for JRU...SSC, not a bad year for first year coach Ato Agustin..who will only get better every year under his tutelage... Saint Benilde will again pull an upset.. !..UPHCR and Mapua will be next year's dark horse..but not this year.

....forecast only...u dont have to agree or disagree...

Letran
Ssc

Finals: JRU vs. San Beda (Jru is the favorite to win the title this year because of an intact lineup but dont count San Beda out because of its championship experience and of course there is Daniels to fill the shoes of Ekwe at the middle.)

Letran will be at 3rd unless Coach Louie Alas spells his magic once again. With "Quadro de Alas" tandem in the Knights lineup and coaching staff. The negative of it of course is that the 2 alas in the lineup are rookies. A great replacement for Jazul next year.

Ex-UST coach Del Rosario appointed NCAA commissioner
05/06/2009 | 11:13 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The National Collegiate Athletic Association has tapped Aric del Rosario as its basketball commissioner for the 2009 season.

This became formal last week after the NCAA Policy Board accepted the recommendation of host school San Beda College for the former Santo Tomas basketball head coach to be the league’s commissioner.

Currently, del Rosario is the commissioner of the Fr. Martin Summer Cup and the FilOil-Flying V Preseason Manny V. Pangilinan Cup. He has been with Fr. Martin for four years now and with the FilOil tournament since last year.

“Nakita nila ako sa Fr. Martin at Flying V. Gusto nila subukan kung kaya ko mapatakbo nang maayos (the NCAA)," del Rosario said.

Among his immediate plans before the season starts is to look into the rules of the NCAA and study it along with deputy commissioner Ompong Segura.

Segura was an assistant to del Rosario back in the Pampanga Dragons in the defunct MBA. He was also deputy to Ato Badolato when the latter served as UAAP commissioner in 2004.

One of the rules that they will look into is the “faking a foul call" or the warning violation for flopping, which sparked some controversy in one of the ongoing summer leagues.

“Paguusapan pa namin kung gagamitan siya sa NCAA," del Rosario said. “Crucial (call) iyon lalo na sa last two minutes."

Del Rosario bared that NABRO and select BARECOM officials will be the referees for the NCAA this year. NABRO handled the officiating in the UAAP in the last few years.

BRASCU, which handled the juniors games last year, will be the referees for the coming UAAP season. The group also officiated the 2004 UAAP season.

“Kabisado ko na sila. Kilala ko na iyong mga referees," del Rosario explained his choice for referees. “As commissioner, kilala mo dapat iyong mga referees."

He also cited the group of referees’ experience as one of his factors for selecting them.

Del Rosario is best remembered for leading the UST Tigers to four straight UAAP men’s basketball crowns in the mid 1990s.

He was also an assistant tactician with Talk ‘N Text in the PBA until 2006 an later sat at chief strategist of the Smart-Pampanga Buddies in the first conference of Liga Pilipinas. –

for MBT: I go for JRU winning the championship... championship or bust year nila ito for me...

for WVT: maraming veterans ang mawawala and CSB's veteran are still playing, medyo tough but CSB will still having a hard time matalo ang SSC. 5th straight title for them.

May 25, 2009, 03:49 AM
all are just tentative pa lang... it could be studio 23's papogi points sa expiring contact nila sa UAAP kaya naisipan yata nilang all seniors basketball games are televise.

wait na lang tayo :).

AltarBoy^_^
May 25, 2009, 04:48 AM
It could be a ploy since there are 3 guest teams that will play for the NCAA and there's enough funds to cover the seniors games. Or possibly lure the UAAP back in since their contract is expiring and they will notice that ABS is giving our league a new treatment that is entirely the same as the UAAP before. ;)

san beda likes the arena ang venue...so ang san beda at jose rizal ang pumapabor sa venue na yan (united ang 2 schools pagdating sa venue...hehe!)

wala pa tayong updates for the volleyball venue or format...tapusin muna natin ang v-league and we can talk about ncaa volleyball...i hope they play sa filoil flying v arena for the finals...o kung medyo alangan, maglaro na lang sa rizal memorial, granting na okay ang venue for volleyball...

For me it's a toss-up between San Beda, JRU, and San Sebastian for the top 3. 4th is Letran because they are competitive every season. 5th will be Mapua or EAC. 6th could be either CSB or AU. And the rest is a battle for quotients for AUF, EAC and UPHSD. :D

I am optimistic and at the same time, realistic of my team's chances. 6th is my strongest prediction, if ever they do win games against the guest teams. And it would be nice to see one great miracle from my team this coming season, and that is to fight harder.

SBC, JRU for the top 2 spot. 3rd and 4th will be a toss up between Mapua,SSCR,EAC,Arellano. Sad for the Knights, Blazers, Altas coz i think they wont enter the final four, napag iiwanan na sila because some teams our getting imports others are spending lots of money just to win the championship. Gone are the days of home grown talents like Samboy, Meneses, Alvarez, Quilban, Hawkins, De Joya, Libed, Adducul, Miller etc.

SSC-R can do another season sweep in the Seniors unless JRU and Arellano U have something to say. The Stags are going to be back in the finals (hopefully)! Of course, many will expect them to win. This year will most probably be the start of another very long title drought for San Beda/Sudan Beda. A SSC-R vs CSJL finals showdown would be a very good treat for fans this Season 85.
