Eagles open title defense vs Tamaraws
Tuesday, March 17, 2009
Ateneo, in pursuit of a second straight UAAP championship, opens its campaign against title contender Far Eastern U when Season 72 of the country's most glamorous collegiate basketball league is held July 11 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Eagles will be without top guards Chris Tiu and Yuri Escueta, who have graduated, but the Loyola-based cagers remain the favorite with last year's MVP Rabeh Al-Hussaini, Finals MVP Nonoy Baclao, Rookie of the Year Ryan Buenafe, Jai Reyes, Nico Salva and Bacon Austria still in the fold.
League president Anton Montinola of host FEU said the inaugurals would have been more exciting with La Salle and UE originally set to cap the explosive opening day twinbill. But the league decided to reset the match to a later date to allow La Salle to compete in the 2009 Universiade slated July 1-12 in Belgrade, Serbia.
The UAAP said the La Salle-UE showdown has been moved to July 16 while replacing the 2 p.m. time slot with the opening rites, which FEU vows will be spectacular in scope.
"It would have been a blockbuster pair of games but we were forced to move it," Montinola yesterday told The STAR. "The good thing about it though is people would be able to watch our beautiful opening ceremony on television."
The 2 p.m. opening and the 4 p.m. Ateneo-FEU duel will be shown live on ABS-CBN UHL channel Studio 23.
FEU's athletic director Mark Molina also said matches pitting University of the Phils. versus National U at 2 p.m. and Univ. of Santo Tomas against Adamson will be held on July 12.
Far Eastern was officially named Season 71 host in the annual league awards night at the Bahay ng Alumni at the UP Diliman campus last week.
Despite losing its backcourt tandem, Ateneo is fancied to repeat this year as it retained the core of the team that swept La Salle in their best-of-three title showdown last year.
Ateneo is eyeing to duplicate its back-to-back title romps in 1987-88 and 1988-89 for a fifth UAAP crown. The Eagles also won in 2002-03 season.
But it will be tough with the rest of the competing field beefing up their respective rosters, particularly FEU, to be led by RP developmental pool standout Mark Andy Barroca.

here's what will gonna happen in season 72:
1. this is the first time a season will open with a lone game...nangyari because dlsu will play sa universiade sa serbia
2. badminton will be moved to first semester...volleyball is still in second semester...
3. the last season of abs-cbn on their second five-year contract with the uaap...kumakatok sa pinto ang solar...and even gma...

i guess one advantage ng abs-cbn is they can cover other uaap sports...if solar will concentrate lang sa basketball, i doubt if they can win the deal...
pero kung magkakaroon sila ng will to cover other sports, especially na may following na ang volleyball...may chance sila...sir jude turcuato came from silverstar sports (the former coveror before abs-cbn)...who covered uaap other sports aside from basketball before...he can help a lot for solar...
this season by the way will reveal yung sino ang magiging tv coveror...kung abs-cbn or others...mainit na mainit ngayon, especially with what happened to pacquiao switching stations...
commissioner sa basketball? wala pa tayong naririnig from the incoming season host...

yep i have read that after this season,
there will a bidding kung sino ang susunod na magcocover.
At mas gusto

supposing Solar wins the bid to broadcast UAAP games starting Season 73, i doubt that the games will be aired over RPN given the fact that the PBA and UAAP calendars seem to overlap, which, i think, might cause a conflict in schedule supposing both PBA and UAAP games would air over RPN. what i am thinking though is that Solar would either air UAAP games over IBC 13, where some PBL broadcasts are placed, or use its tactical alliance with GMA and have the games aired over QTV.

Take a hint from comments made by Anton Montinola to the media. The UAAP wants their games to be marketed not only in metro Manila but to all the corners of the country and beyond. The problem for Solar is that they buy time from other tv stations to broadcast the games. Does Solar have an international channel to reach out to Balikbayan alumni of the UAAP? ABS-CBN has the advantage because of the TFC channel though they can be more consistent in showing games as scheduled rather than tape delay. I do not know how far reaching is the cable programming of GMA.
Bottom line, the UAAP is looking for a bigger contract to help finance the non-revenue sports, more tv coverage for volleyball, badminton, swimming, track and field and probably soccer. To satisfy the alumni, a promise to show games through international cable and a cash cow for both UAAP and the winning network.
ABS-CBN, GMA and Solar should look to the cable set-up by the various BCS conference schools in the US. The Big 10, ACC, Pac 10 have their own cable channel where in they show highlights of the previous weeks sporting events, televise certain inter league games not picked up by national or regional telecast. This set up gives a lot of exposure to the league and helps the schools with recruitment.

GMA-7 joins UAAP TV war
The Philippine Star (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=450209&publicationSubCategoryId=69)

MANILA, Philippines - GMA-7 yesterday joined the bidding war for the extensive broadcast rights of the UAAP games, officially making it a three-way race among rival ABS-CBN and Solar Sports for the right to air the country’s most popular collegiate league.
UAAP president Anton Montinola of Season 72 host Far Eastern U announced that GMA-7 has presented its official bid in a meeting yesterday at the Quezon Hall of the University of the Philippines’ Diliman, Quezon City campus.
“Yes, GMA has made its bid official, it’s now a three-way race,” Montinola told The STAR.
If it wins, GMA-7 would air the UAAP basketball games and other sports events on its QTV Channel 11 and its affiliate international channel. It would also mark the two stations first venture into sports.
ABS-CBN, which currently owns the rights to telecast all UAAP events until March 31, 2010, and Solar Entertainment have earlier submitted their respective bids.
In an effort to gain an edge over its rivals, ABS-CBN has offered to air the best-of-three UAAP seniors’ championship on Channel 2 instead of airing it on its UHL channel Studio 23 as it used to in the last nine seasons.
Solar, for its part, will air it on CS9 and its cable channel BTV like it does with the PBA and the NBA games.
All three offer five-year bids.
“We’re flattered that three of the top television organizations in the country are looking to partner with us, this is the first time that this is happening,” said Montinola.

i know solar can cover the uaap better because they have better equipment but i prefer the coverage to stick with channel 23. at least the viewers know what they are getting. palitan na lang yung commentator lineup. maybe get alumni players or past coaches.

re: UAAP, mas gusto ko sana na tie-up ng GMA at ng Solar ang bidding para sa broadcast rights ng liga. kulang na kulang kasi yung Solar when it comes to international coverage at baka maging in conflict ang UAAP calendar with that of PBA, which is being aired over RPN bukod sa wala pang Sports Desk ang GMA so i really hope for a joint GMA-Solar bid for the UAAP, with games being aired on QTV, RPN (replays siguro on late nights), BTV, Solar Sports and GMA Pinoy TV. :)

a GMA-Solar joint bid for the UAAP will be mutually beneficial for both GMA and Solar:
* Solar, which somewhat lacks international coverage, would gain a lot when UAAP and even PBA games get covered by GMA's Pinoy TV international channel.
* UAAP games can be aired over QTV while PBA will be exclusive on RPN, preventing conflict of schedule when the calendars of the two leagues overlap. i suggest that when GMA and Solar jointly bid for the UAAP, the UAAP games will be aired over QTV (live games), RPN (replays), Solar Sports, BTV and GMA Pinoy TV (overseas).
* GMA, which still lacks a sports desk, will gain experience when it joins forces with Solar for the UAAP.
* a GMA-Solar tactical alliance will be a force to recon with on Philippine sports coverage- something that would make ABS-CBN really insecure.

Before the entry of UAAP in Studio 23, does ABS-CBN have any sports show? Well there was one, MBA but it did not last long. So it means, before they had UAAP (NCAA) wala naman talaga silang longstanding experience in sports program telecast before they got UAAP.
For GMA and Solar, I welcome their interests. Hehe. Honestly, I wish change hehe... GMA never really had any sports telecast history (except for Pacquaio- this is a different story na). But I am positive it would be exciting to have a different network covering the games ahihihi. Solar, ok yan! Mas gusto ko yan kesa sa Studio 23.

kung sosolohin ng either GMA or Solar ang pag-bid sa UAAP, medyo mahihirapan (although kinaya ng Solar yung PBA but that's an entirely different story). mas maganda pa din na joint bid ng GMA at ng Solar ang gawin nila to fight ABS-CBN for the rights to broadcast the UAAP starting Season 73. ;)

^ but before ABS-CBN got the UAAP, they were nothing as well. ABS-CBN tried copying the PBA by establishing the MBA but that league was, well, short lived and a ratings failure.
in short, hindi dapat maliitin ang capacity ng Solar at ng GMA to handle UAAP coverage pero siyempre mas maganda kung joint bid ng Solar at ng GMA ang mangyayari. yun nga lang, we have to give credit to ABS-CBN to marketing the UAAP significantly pero, yun nga, bago nila nagawang kunin ang rights ng UAAP from Silverstar Sports eh nagsimula din sila sa wala.

although ABS-CBN still has things to improve like tweaking the way their anchors cover, even teak the anchor's lineup, single out Boom Gonzalez for his anchor styles, better schedules, more airtime for the games, come up with Shows showcasing other UAAP sports, not mainly basketball, and more coverage of the othre UAAP games...
of course in the beginning specially for not so famous yet sports, this is pushing the envelope a little but they have to start promoting the games first, then the fanbase may eventually follow - the same thing happened to volleyball....

ABS has come a long way. If the UAAP goes with Solar... Think PBL. The PBL, when it was still in S23, was receiving a lot of airtime because it can reach to everyone. The PBL today has gone down a bit because of how Solar is broadcasting it. Add to that the fact that they can broadcast UAAP globally.

actually, meron nang schedule for First Round games next year. ginawa na agad ang schedule in consideration of DLSU possibly playing at the Universiade in Serbia during the starting days of the new UAAP season, which is why nasabi ni theo78 sa post niya na posibleng one game lang (FEU vs ADMU) ang opening Saturday ng UAAP Season 72 dahil baka tumuloy pa din papuntang Serbia ang DLSU. otherwise, magkasabay ang FEU vs ADMU at DLSU vs UE on the opening Saturday tapos Sunday naman ang UP vs NU at UST vs ADU.
yung formal announcement ng schedule na lang ang dapat hintayin. what my source gave to me is actually a completely partial schedule for UP and for DLSU so, as what he told me, hintayin na lang yung paglabas ng full schedule.
isa pa, ilang beses nang inuulit-ulit ni Anton Montinola yung schedule na yan sa past news articles. pakihanap na lang at nang malaman mo na may plano na ang FEU for the coming season, which will contradict your accusations towards me.
isa lang ang sigurado though: Philsports Arena/ULTRA at hindi The Arena in San Juan ang alternate venue sa Araneta Coliseum this coming UAAP season, which is a logical decision on the part of Anton Montinola given the fact that the 5,000-seat The Arena is way too small to host even an ordinary UAAP men's basketball game unlike the 10,000-seat Philsports Arena/ULTRA, which can host both small games and big games just in case the Araneta Coliseum is not available for use by the UAAP.

ABS-CBN, GMA-7 and Solar express interest in UAAP 2010 coverage
by Josef Ramos
Although there are three giant television networks that expressed their intention to become the official broadcast partner in 2010, the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) said it is “too early to tell.”
Board representative Anton Montinola of incoming host Far Eastern University (FEU) said that UAAP is not “rushing things” to determine which among the three networks have the best offer because there is still a year left before ABS CBN contract expires.
“In respect to ABS CBN, we don’t want to say or give any early presumption because there is still one-year left for them although the bidding war has been open to any aspiring network,” Montinola told the inboundpass on Sunday in an interview.
But the soft-spoken Montinola said that the UAAP board is very glad to find out the three highly-respected broadcasting television networks have signified their intention to bid to become UAAP’s next television carrier.
“We are glad, of course, because there are three TV networks that are very, very much interested to become our partner next season,” said Montinola. “They also presented their respective bids, offers and plans. This is the first time that this is happening.”
Giant television network ABS CBN, which presently owns the rights to telecast all UAAP events until March 31, 2010, and Solar Sports Entertainment Corporation expressed their intention earlier to bid last week.
Another giant television network GMA7, Montinola said, has joined the bidding war lately that made it a three-way fight among GMA7, Solar and ABS CBN.
A highly-reliable source from GMA7, who requested anonymity, said they are willing to give everything to the UAAP to get the UAAP broadcast rights.
“The big bosses of GMA7 will do everything to win the bidding war whether they spend million just to attract the attention of the board,” said by the source.
If it wins, GMA-7 would air the UAAP basketball games and other sports events on its QTV Channel 11 and its affiliate international channel. It would also mark the two stations first venture into sports.
For its part, ABS-CBN has offered to telecast the best-of-three UAAP seniors’ championship on Channel 2 instead of airing it on its UHL channel Studio 23 as it used to do in the last nine seasons.

Solar, for its part, will air it on CS9 and its cable channel BTV like it does with the PBA, PBL and the NBA games.
A high-ranking official from the Solar Sports, who also requested not to be named, said they are willing to offer more money but did not mention any amount. ABS CBN did not present contract is worth P75 million for five years.
Montinola, however, declined to comment regarding the respective financial offer by the three stations, saying “We are (UAAP and GMA7, ABS CBN and Solar) still far from that discussion.”
All three networks have offered a five-year deal, according to Montinola.

Marumi? Hindi naman. It's called outbidding someone. If a company basically offers the same services you are currently offering, ano gagawin mo? E di gagandahan mo lalo bid mo. It's called business and economics. Kaya nga bidding eh. You should offer something your competitor can't offer

Yes, this is the only time. As I said, it was a good business strategy in keeping UAAP in ABS' fold. It's called competition and you do what you can do, in this case outbid, to win against your competitor. Optimization. Long, long ago? Why? As I siad...Economics...

still unconfirmed: UAAP Season 72 volleyball games will start not on the usual November-December schedule but on JANUARY 2010. why? because UST, c/o Ermito De Sagun, wanted preferential treatment. Ermito's reason: most of "his" players are playing for the RP Team and the RP Team will be participating at the 2009 SEA Games so the UAAP should adjust to him and UST instead of him and UST adjusting to the UAAP.

ang gusto ng UST na mangyari:
1. start UAAP Season 72 volleyball games, including men's volleyball games, by January 2010.
2. First Round will be held between January 9 and January 31.
3. four games per week (Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday) schedule for First Round.
4. everything goes back as normal (Wednesday, Saturday, Sunday game days, etc.) by Second Round.
First Round without the entire tournament being adjusted just for them.

di rin kakayanin. dapat talaga may adjustments na gawin but not to a point na yung buong liga ang mag-adjust sa kapricho ng UST.
take a look at DLSU MBT, which was supposed to leave for Serbia to participate at the Universiade. yung buong UAAP ba ang nag-adjust just for DLSU? no. first two games ng DLSU ang na-adjust pero yung games ng ibang teams would push through as scheduled.
sa case ng UST, gusto nila na ang buong liga ang mag-adjust sa kanila when it was supposed to be the other way around. talong talo ang UAAP sa demand nila dahil bukod sa hindi kakayanin ng players yung four games a week schedule na trip ni Ermito, lugi din sa kita ang UAAP.
UST should just skip several of its first round games and let the games of the other teams push through as scheduled. hindi dapat sina Chuchi at Ermito ang magdikta ng terms nila sa buong liga.

RP volleyball men, women’s pool already formed
Josef Ramos
The Manila Times
Sunday, February 22, 2009
THE newly installed coaches of the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) have already chosen the members of the men’s and women’s national pool which would give them more time to select the members of the RP volleyball squads for the 2009 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December.
Men’s Coach Sammy Acaylar and women’s Coach Thelma Barina-Rojas, who were recently appointed by the PVF board led by President Pedro Mendoza and Secretary-General Otie Camangian, selected members of the national pool after conducting a try-out a week ago.
“They [coaches] suggested for an early try-out and they already selected the composition of [the] pool embers,” said Camangian. “The association is preparing very hard to form a competitive team for the SEA Games.”
Camangian also said the two coaches have already laid down their respective programs on how to make the RP volleyball team competitive against powerhouse countries like Thailand , Indonesia and Vietnam.
“It’s been more than a decade since we took our gold medal in volleyball,” said Camangian, referring to the 1993 Singapore women’s gold medalist squad. “We just need to work hard to make that happen again.”
In the 2005 SEA Games hosted by the country, the Philippine women’s team settled for the bronze medal, while the country did not send a team in the 2007 Thailand SEA Games.
The men’s pool is composed of Dante Alinsunurin, Reny John Balse, Willy de la Cruz, Reggie Espeleta, Clarence Esteban, Reyson Fuentes, Nino Jeruz, Joaquin Marcelo, Mark Lee, Nelson Locquiao, Jessie Lopez, former University Athletic Association of the Philippines Most Valuable Player (UAAP MVP) Edjet Mabbayad, Gerry Mabutol, Chris Macasaet, Jeffrey Malabanan, Roger Ngo, Sam Paquiz, Edcer Penetrante and Archie Taruc.
The women’s pool is composed of former UAAP MVP Mary Jean Balse, Michiko Castenada, Dahlia Cruz, Rubie de Leon, Raysabelle Devanadera, Rhea Dimaculangan, Juwelyn Gonzaga, Nasella Guliman, Cathy Kwan, Lawrence Ann Latigay, Lilet Mabayyad, Aiza Maizo, Mikaela Morada, Maika Ortiz, Aeriel Patnongon, Princess Pido, Suzanne Roces, Aleona Santiago, Angeli Tabaquero, Alysa Valdez, Cindy Velasquez, Venus Bernal and Charmaine Velez.
The men’s team, said Camangian, would also be reinforced by Filipino-Americans 6’3” middle spiker Drew Pascua, 6’1” setter Sam Morehouse, Rodney Marayag and 6’6” Will Curtis. They are expected to arrive soon in Manila to join the training of the RP squad.
A month or two before the biennial meet takes place, the men and women’s pool will be both reduced to 14 members each
UST: Dimaculangan, Maizo, Ortiz
FEU: Morada

wala nga pero mali pa din yung gusto ni De Sagun na ang buong UAAP ang mag-adjust sa kanila samantalang yung ibang teams ay sige pa din sa pag-participate kahit na undermanned. how can De Sagun and UST be so unfair to the other seven teams who are playing undermanned and all so that no disruptions will be caused to the calendar of games while they have the balls to dictate their terms to the league?
if they want adjustments to the schedule, the games should proceed as planned but the last seven games of the First Round will solely be UST games. it's the good of the majority (the other seven member universities) over the interests of a select few (UST).

i think there should be no adjustment at all since four key players of UST will be gone for a couple of games, why not take that as an opportunity for other UST players to play especially Hannah Mance and Maru Banaticla so that they can be more reliable during crunchtime. They will most likely lose their opening game but that will do them more good than harm since it will make them stronger and tougher for the succeeding games especially when those four ladies come back*okay*
They just need more confidence and motivation not just from their fans but also from their coaches..

^ it's the good of the WHOLE league, i.e. the majority (the seven other teams) who still participate in the games despite being subjected to the worst of conditions (e.g. being undermanned, losing key players) against the selfish interests of a handful of people like Ermito De Sagun. kung yun ngang NU na sobrang undermanned at aminado na dehado sa ibang teams ay naglalaro pa din at hindi man lang humihingi sa UAAP board na i-adjust ang schedule o ang playing conditions to favor them, bakit hindi yun magawa ni Ermito De Sagun para sa team niya?
at, oo, balasubas nga si De Sagun just like his contemporaries in the UAAP board such as Anton Montinola and Chuchi Francisco. they are the very reason why UAAP is a joke and has rules that are nothing but mere suggestions, no thanks to their influence peddling and corrupt and unprofessional manner of running things within the league. kapag nagsama-sama ang tatlong yan, asahan na na approved yung mga kapricho nila kahit na detrimental yun sa liga (examples na lang: Maui Villanueva rule, Soc Rivera rule, mga katarantaduhan na scheduling katulad ng gustong mangyari ni De Sagun sa UAAP Season 72 volleyball, etc.).

i guess nagawa na yun ng V-League organizers on my behalf by rebuking his request that the V-League adjusts its schedule in favor of UST just because UST would participate in an inter-collegiate sports activity in Baguio (and after being rebuked, De Sagun, as always, again issued threats that UST will not join V-League anymore but, just like before, V-League rebuked De Sagun and, as usual, supalpal na naman si De Sagun sa V-League organizers). isa pa, alam na ni De Sagun na marami kami na ayaw sa katarantaduhan na plano nila. ;)

The Arena in San Juan), etc.?
3. papaano naman yung seven other teams na kahit na may kanya-kanyang problema eh wala namang reklamo sa pag-participate sa UAAP volleyball tournament? ang FEU, alam na malaking factor na mawawala si Morada due to her RP Team commitments but did we hear anything from their part na dapat mag-adjust ang UAAP para sa kanila? none. ang NU, siyam lang ang players at palaging dehado sa mga kalaban nito pero nagreklamo ba si Coach Johnny Candoy at ang players niya sa UAAP Board up to a point na nag-demand sila na mag-adjust ang liga just for them? hindi. sa pagkakataong ito, ipinakita ni Ermito De Sagun ang kawalan niya ng respeto sa ibang teams by demanding to the seven teams and the entire league to adjust to his whims through his recent one-sided (obviously biased to UST) proposals to Season 72 volleyball?
4. sa inaasal niya, ipinapakita niya wala siyang bilib sa sariling niyang coaches at players. yes, Dimaculangan, Maizo and Ortiz are key players for UST and losing them due to RP Team commitments would be hard for them but the Tigresses only had four of its players temporarily unavailable, therefore making them still capable of participating in the UAAP volleyball tournament WITHOUT the need for De Sagun's one-sided proposal of the UAAP adjusting to UST instead of UST submitting to the will of the majority. kung talagang bilib si De Sagun na "winning team" ang UST WVT, then the undermanned Tigresses should still participate in the UAAP volleyball events without the need for him to bastardize the game schedule just like what he is pushing for right now.

undermanned sila dahil they're playing for the national colors.
what?
me bagong expose na naman si bk? well, what's new?
:bat:
notice how he cannot even answer your points. ang nasasagot lang niya 'yung mga mababait na statements ni animo24, with matching sir pa. hahahaha

Losing Rhea Dimac pa lang malaking butas na yun for UST how much more kung mawala pa si Aiza because national team sila.
overall losing a good setter and perhaps one of the "MVP" type player Aiza Maizo is not a joke kaya ganun lang siguro ang proposal ng UST.

^Try making it four if it's really true that Santiago is bound to don the black, gold and white jersey.
Make it 5 na dahil sa UST rin maglalaro ang reigning Athlete of The Year na si Alyssa Valdez who is considered a star player.
So, in total:
UST: Maizo, Dimaculangan, Ortiz, Valdez, Santiago
FEU: Morada

De Sagun = t@rant@do, balasubas, g@go, salot
May "issue" nga ba?

^ nakakainis eh. is this the way things are being run within an organization of educational institutions like UAAP? aba! no wonder pababa na nang pababa ang kaledad ng edukasyon dito dahil mismong mga school administrators na dapat sana ay examples ng honesty, transparency, integrity at fairness ay siya mismong nangunguna sa paggawa ng katarantaduhan.
itong si De Sagun, ang tigas ng mukha. bakit hindi niya patunayan na may ibubuga talaga yung UST team niya by fielding in an undermanned team in this season's UAAP women's volleyball tournament instead of forcing his will on the league through his one-sided proposals?
Hi there...comment ko lang po BK, aminin natin UST at DLSU ang team-to-beat sa Season 72 ng women's volleyball..so don't compare it sa NU kasi they never had that winning tradition naman na iniingatan like ng UST...and Maizo, Ortiz and Dimaculangan ang tatanggalin mo sa line-up..parang tinanggal mo na ang best attacker, best setter at best blocker ng uste nyan...compare dun sa 7 teams na sinasabi mo, UST ang pinaka-lugi ng nawalan...and one more thing, hindi pa naman ito final diba? I think gustong gusto lang ng ibang teams na mangyari ito sa UST dahil takot sila harapin ang malakas na UST line-up kaya tinetake advantage ang ganitong situation. They are forcing not to adjust the schedule dahil dun since they will have the chance to defeat UST.
In the end, it's the Board of UAAP who will give the final decision not De Sagun...kaya wag mo na balasubasin siya haha..nag-suggest lang naman po siya hehe*okay*
Whatever the decision will be...we'll just have to live with it.:)

This time wag nalang.
No need to "impose" UST's will. All the 7 other teams are happy.

MANILA, Philippines – One of the prized rookies in the UAAP gets an early taste of the country’s fiercest basketball rivalry – and what it feels to play opposite a former teammate with whom he has won titles before.
Arvie Bringas heads for an interesting debut with La Salle when the Green Archers battle arch rival Ateneo Blue Eagles in the 2009 Filoil Flying V Pre-Season MVP Cup on April 18 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Bringas, who powered the San Sebastian Staglets to an unbeaten season for a fourth straight NCAA juniors title, will square off against former teammate Ryan Buenafe, who was the Staglets’ main man in the first three of those four titles.
The Ateneo-La Salle showdown will kick off at 4 p.m., right after the 1 p.m. opening ceremony and the 2 p.m. tussle between NCAA champion San Beda and Letran.
NCAA runner-up Jose Rizal University and University of the Philippines will cap the heavy three-game bill at 6:30 p.m.
Buenafe had a sensational season by winning the Rookie of the Year plum during Ateneo’s UAAP championship run last year.
And Bringas will try to duplicate that feat with the Archers, who will be led by veterans Peejay Barua and James Mangahas. La Salle lost to Ateneo in last year’s UAAP Finals.
Bringas, an athletic 6-foot-5 cager, also heads a La Salle recruitment coup that boasts five former RP youth standouts.

Joe Lipa is back as UAAP commissioner
By Romina Austria
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 09:26:00 06/11/2009
MANILA, Philippines - Joe Lipa is back yet again in the UAAP, where defending champion Ateneo opens its title defense against host Far Eastern U in the opening weekend of the 72nd edition of the country’s premiere collegiate tournament.
The UAAP board on Wednesday unanimously approved Lipa’s return as basketball commissioner, a post the many-time national team mentor also held during the 68th season in 2005.
“Joe is very qualified because he has shown that he can handle the job without any hint of bias or dishonor,” UAAP president Anton Montinola of FEU said.
The 72nd season of the UAAP opens on July 11 with University of Santo Tomas, overall champion for the past 11 years, taking on Adamson at 2 p.m., followed by the De La Salle-University of the East clash at 4 p.m.
UP debuts the following day against National U at 2 p.m. Ateneo and FEU collide at 4 p.m.

Joe Lipa appointed UAAP basketball commissioner
06/10/2009 | 07:44 PM
MANILA, Philippines – Joe Lipa was appointed by the Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) board as this year's commissioner for basketball competitions during the league's board meeting on Wednesday at the Far Eastern University.
Lipa will take over the job of Chito Narvasa, who presided over the league's basketball matches last season. Previously, Lipa served as commissioner of the UAAP's rival collegiate league, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Tapped by the UAAP board to help Lipa in enforcing league rules are referees from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Philippine Basketball League and BRASCO.
The country's premier collegiate league is set to open its 2009-2010 season on July 11 with University of Santo Tomas meeting Adamson University in the first match followed by the tussle between De La Salle University and University of the East.
The next day, July 12, University of the Philippines will take on National University followed by the face-off between defending champion Ateneo de Manila University and this year's host FEU.

Bahay_Kubo
Jun 13, 2009, 02:35 PM
^ Philsports Arena (ULTRA).

Jun 13, 2009, 03:09 PM
two venues: philsports arena and araneta coliseum...women's and juniors elims for sure sa blue eagle gym (na babaguhin na ang lighting, that's what i heard...parang sa filoil flying v arena)
hayaan mo, magda-die down na itong volleyball fever after the v-league...sana! :)

sa NCAA na ang NABRO hehe...
Bahay_Kubo
Jun 13, 2009, 04:14 PM
nash: pare, nasa NCAA na naman ulit ang NABRO. nagpalit lang sila ng uniform- naka-SBP uniforms na sila. abangan mo dyan si Boyong Mañalac, yung NABRO 13, kasi kasama siya sa SBP pool of referees, the same group of referees that the SBP tried to "impose" on the UAAP but was resisted by Coach Joe Lipa and his allies.

"warning on (insert player's name and jersey number or coach's name here) for resenting to a call..."
"technical foul on (insert player's name and jersey number or coach's name here) for excessive complaining..."
"warning on (insert team's name here) for improper bench decorum..."
SBP referees' one-liners:

ABS-CBN or Solar Sports/GMA? F.uck them both. Pareho number one. Suck my n.uts! Suck these f.ucking n.uts!
