How to Wash Hair Without Shampoo or Conditioner

A few hundred years ago, the idea of washing your hair sans chemicals would have been commonplace. Today it seems strange or even unhygienic; yet some people are turning back to traditional methods of haircare. Whether stemming from a desire to reduce consumption, avoid chemicals, relieve conditions such as excema or dermatitis, or simply experiment, shampoo-free washing (known affectionately as 'no-pooing' or 'water-only washing') can be very effective in maintaining clean and healthy hair.
Why Washing Hair Without Shampoo or Conditioner Works

Hair becomes dirty because of two factors: trapped particles, such as dust, and sebum, a natural oil produced by the scalp which makes hair look greasy.

Washing the hair frequently with shampoo strips the hair of its natural oil, sebum. To compensate, the scalp will begin to overproduce sebum to make up for the lack, resulting in a cycle of overcleansing and overproduction of oil. Once the cycle is stopped, the scalp will eventually regain its normal equilibrium, resulting in the need for less frequent washing. A transition period of about six weeks is required to accustom the scalp to lower sebum production.

How to Wash Hair Without Products

True water-only washing uses no products at all. In this case, the hair and scalp are simply washed vigorously under water, using the fingernails to 'scritch' at the scalp to remove any particles. Some people find that alternating hot and cold water helps to break through the sebum. Finishing the wash with a blast of cold water will lock down the cuticle of the hair, keeping it shiny.

Some people, while refraining from commercial hair products such as conditioner, like to facilitate washing and conditioning with natural products. Baking soda, vinegar, herbal teas, natural oils and butters, egg yolks and even yoghurt can form the basis of commercial product-free hair washing.

Easing the Transition to Water-Only Washing

The six-week greasy period, during which the scalp learns to produce less sebum, can be frustrating. Greasy hair can be hidden under a hat or bandana, or disguised in braids, which hold particularly well in greasy hair. A boar bristle brush will polish the surface of the hair, which can make sebum look like hair product rather than grease.

It is possible to wean the scalp off shampoo. Alternating diluted shampoo washes with water-only washes will make the transition period longer but less severe. Alternatively, conditioner-only washing can be used for a few weeks before attempting water-only washing.

Some water-only hair washers experience a renewed greasy period some months into their new routine; this eventually settles down.

A few hundred years ago, people didn't believe in the germ theory of disease and the average human lifespan was half of what it is today.

Today it seems strange or even unhygienic;

Perhaps because it is unhygenic.

Baka nakatira ang nagsulat ng article na 'yan sa lugar na walang pollution. That is so unapplicable in the Philippines.

wow. 6 weeks pala yung greasyhead phase na yun? i've only tried three weeks without shampoo. the greasyhead look makes a better tousled look than wax or putty does

Hindi pwede sa akin ito. Sobrang oily kasi ng scalp ko. Siguro kung naturally dry ang scalp/hair mo pwede pa.

Tsaka IMO sa mga malalamig na lugar lang applicable ito. Warm country = more sweat.

I tried not washing my hair for about a year when I was still in Highschool (I was a slob back then).

Oily siya at medyo tumitigas kapag hindi mo ginagalaw. Parang naka gel kung titignan ibang storya naman kung aamoyin hahaha.

even in the middle of winter, if you don't wash your hair with shampoo, you get that stinky hair smell. I know I'm abusing my hair by shampooing almost every day (i skip on Saturdays and Sundays - - if I'm staying in the house - -I just rinse with water), but I don't think I can stand the smell of dirty hair.

I don't do Water-Only Washing but I have been doing Conditioner-Only Hair Washing (CO) for a few weeks now. I must say that since I started doing CO my hair has never looked better and felt healthier. Before, my hair was suuuper dry and lifeless. Sobrang dull-looking and impossible to style without hair styling products like gel or wax. But now, wash and wear na lang. :)

Before I was worried that CO will make my hair greasier because of buildup but I was wrong. It turns out that conditioners have enough surfactants to cleanse hair just as well as shampoo does, but without the damaging effects of shampoo. It only requires longer massaging and rinsing. What I do is I massage my scalp and hair for about 4 to 5 minutes and leave the conditioner on for up to 15 minutes before rinsing and after that my hair feels squeaky clean as if I used shampoo. Malinis talaga, parang Cetaphil yung effect nya--nakakalinis nang walang bula.

I first learned about CO from a show in the Lifestyle Network where they showed a hair salon in the US advocating CO. In fact, in the US there is already a company that is manufacturing what they call "cleansing conditioners" which does exactly that--cleansing hair without the lather. It was formulated in response to the growing popularity of CO in the US and also to completely eliminate the need for shampoo and its harsh and damaging effects.

If you are interested to try CO, here is a website with very helpful information:
