SM City North Edsa is now the largest mall in the Philippines and third largest mall in the WORLD!
MANILA, Philippines - Additional expansion of SM City North Edsa makes it the world’s third-largest shopping mall, the Philippines’ largest mall operator said.

The soft opening of The Annex—which adds 90,000 square meters of gross floor area (GFA) to the flagship mall—expands SM City North Edsa’s GFA to 425,000 square meters, SM Prime Holdings Inc. said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE).

Besides providing direct and indirect employment to 3,000 workers, The Annex also consists of six floors and a basement, 70 percent of which has already been awarded to various tenants.

“Its major tenants include Savemore Supermarket, Ace Hardware and an SM Cyberzone. Other mall tenants include fashion retailer Charles & Keith, watch and jewelry shop Chronos, infant store Baby & Company, and electronic shops Power Mac Center, Sony VAIO, HTC, and Belkin, among many others," the company said.

SM North Edsa is the only mall of SM Prime where the three food retail formats, Savemore Supermarket in The Annex, SM Supermarket in the Main Building and the SM Hypermarket in The Block, are all located in one complex.

In 2009, SM North EDSA also looks forward to opening the Skygarden, which offers another exciting and environmental element to the Mall complex, the company said.

SM Mall of Asia, SM Megamall, and SM City Cebu rank as the fourth, seventh, and eleventh-largest malls in the world, the company said.

Including SM City North Edsa, all these malls have occupancy rates of over 95 percent.

I don't find anything interesting in SM malls as well.

They are just malls with mediocre stores and polite yet inefficient service.

I love the chaos in SM malls!

Syempre kung mayaman ka, you'd find the stores in SM mediocre. But for the lower-middle, and the middle classes, I think their range of shops is more than enough.

The elevator boy at SM Annex told me that the 6th floor would be occupied by a call center.

at least thats how i felt when i went there several months ago..

At least *** MOA was built and conceptualized as one single unit..

Never impressed with SM Marikina kahit malapit sa min yun.

I do believe na na-overtake-an ng SM North ang MOA.

I believe na SM Annex ang nagpalaki sa SM North Edsa, not The Block.

Nakakatawa pala sa SM Annex. Yung Philippine College of Surgeons (tama ba?) building ay na-sandwich pa. Parang pag titignan mo yung buong kahabaan ng SM Annex, wow! Tapos out of the blue, may maliit & lumang building na umeksena.

:)Guys check nyo www.smprime.com Mall of Asia pa rin ang biggest sa Pilipinas and among SM Malls. 2nd North Edsa and 3rd Megamall after all the improvements, constructions and renovations.:)

:)Kahit maganda interior ng Ayala malls, mas madalas pa rin ako sa SM malls kasi they have everything that will fit your budget. They are still true to their tagline "We've got it all for you!".

:)SM is a retail institution na sa Pilipinas. For the books na ang success ni Mr. Henry Sy Sr. sa retail industry. It's a must na siguro for business students taking up retailing to look into the SM story, National Bookstore, Jollibee etc...

P6.4-B MRT-LRT loop project along EDSA to be completed in May 2010

By C. Lloyd T. Caliwan
MANILA, Jan. 22 (PNA) -- The P6.4 billion project that would connect the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) loop is expected to be completed and operational by May 2010 and would cover at least five stations and span 5.71 kilometers.

The rail link project would connect the LRT Line 1’s Monumento station in Caloocan City with the MRT North Avenue station in Quezon City in a bid to ease Metro Manila’s traffic problem, according to Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Leandro Mendoza.

Mendoza said that there is no problem in funding these projects because the national government has several private partners to finance the administration's infrastructure priority projects.

He also said that the completion of the 5.4-kilometer route linking LRT 1 and MRT 3 will definitely help ease the traffic congestion, particularly along EDSA from Monumento in Caloocan up to Taft Avenue in Pasay City.

“The closed loop train system will run entirely on electricity, making it fast, efficient, safe, and environment friendly," Mendoza added.

The project aims to put up new stations in Balintawak, Roosevelt/Muñoz while the North Avenue Station of the MRT and the Monumento Grand Central station of the LRT 1 would be improved.

The Metro Rail Transit system, popularly known as the MRT, is part of Metro Manila’s metropolitan rail system. It has a single line, MRT-3 or the Blue Line.

Although it has characteristics of a light rail, such as the type of rolling stock used, it is more akin to a rapid transit system. It is not related to the Manila Light Rail Transit System, a separate but linked system.

One of its original purposes was to decongest Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), one of Metro Manila’s main thoroughfares and home to the MRT.

The MRT is operated by the Metro Rail Transit Corp. (MRTC), a private company operating in partnership with the DOTC under a build-operate-transfer agreement.

The Light Rail Transit system, popularly known as the LRT, has two lines: LRT-1, called the Yellow Line, and MRT-2, called the Purple Line.

The LRT, operated by the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), a government-owned and controlled corporation, is the first metro system in Southeast Asia, built earlier than Singapore’s MRT by three years. (PNA)

OA naman kung isasara ang SM North...Believe me, SM North Edsa would probably be the last mall Henry Sy would like to close.

The “Battle” of the cinemas begins
by AUC. February 01, 2009

Philippine movies became more productive when SM Cinemas (West Avenue Theaters Corporation), the largest movie exhibitor in the Philippines, opened their first branch on 1987 at SM North Edsa shopping mall, the first and true “supermall” in the Philippines, with eight wide screens, state-of-the-art sound and a new taste for movie lovers.

It’s in the middle of the crisis, after the historical Edsa Revolution, and the reformation of the government, but West Avenue Theaters didn’t mind it, continued their dreams of becoming the largest movie operator in the Philippines. After four to five years operation in SM North Edsa, SM decided to add 4 additional theaters at the mall’s annex.

From that time, SM Cinemas at SM North Edsa became the avenue for the premiere nights and advance screenings events of both local and foreign films, and became the den of the producers and distributors who wanted their movies to gross high as much as possible, a box office hit and much better if a blockbuster hit. After a few years, SM Cinemas opened more branches around the metro and around the country.

Although SM Cinemas opened their doors for new branches in Megamall, Sta. Mesa, Manila and Cebu, and other movie operators such as Robinsons Movieworlds at Ermita and Galleria, SM North Edsa cinemas continued of becoming the template of the producers wanting a big income and impact from the people. A single showing of a box office movie in 12 movie houses at SM North Edsa can gross an amazing P10 million, prior to its 300, 000 visitors a day, proving that nothing beats the “first and original” cinemas inside a mall. Some of the movies gave SM North Edsa the title as the top grossing theater in the country are Spider-Man film series and Harry Potter installments.

The auditorium styles of Sy’s cinemas were applied in all their branches nationwide. SM Cinemas reigned, with almost 150 theaters operating nationwide, as the competition also rises between the cinema operators nationwide.

Other cinema operators in our country didn’t follow Sy’s plan, else, made their own piece, by stadium-style cinemas that can be found in Araneta Center’s Gateway Mall, Powerplant Rockwell and Shangri-La Cineplexes. Robinsons Movieworld followed them, converted their Robinsons Galleria and Robinsons Ermita theaters from auditorium styles to stadium styles. And it works!

The fireball of hot tensions rise in 2007 as Ayala Malls introduced TriNoma, the new kid on the block in front of SM North Edsa, the most populous and most profitable mall of SM, with their very exciting anchors, including 8 state-of-the-art cinemas, that beat the longtime leader SM North Edsa in terms of exhibiting foreign movies.

Trinoma topped the list of the best performing theaters in 2008 movies such as “National Treasure”, “Jumper”, “10, 000 BC”, “Prince Caspian”, “Hancock”, “The Dark Knight”, “High School Musical”, “Quantum of Solace” and 2009 movies realeased this January namely “Bedtime Stories” and “Underworld: Rise of the Lycans”. Meanwhile, SM North Edsa also joined the Top 10 list of all the said movies, but never got its original title as the “Top Grossing movie house” in the Philippines. The guys from TriNoma are surely packed with sunny faces, after the results that their new LaZ seats theaters are number 1.

Ric Camaligan, vice president of SM Leisures, acknowledges that Trinoma has overtaken SM City North Edsa in movie ticket sales. “The mall is new and as we know, we like to try what’s new,” he says.

“We’re retooling some,” Camaligan says. “We’ve converted one of the theaters in The Block [on SM North] into a digital 3D screen, a downsized version of the IMAX at the SM Mall of Asia. We also added digital projection in some of our theaters to accommodate digital films.”

Now on, TriNoma is the country’s top money maker, becoming the benchmark for a movie to be a big hit.

A spokesman of one movie distributor cited Trinoma’s good location (it has a direct access to the commuter train that runs the length of North Edsa to Edsa/Taft and it’s the loading/unloading stop for buses plying the Baclaran-Monumento-Meycauayan route) and the multiplex’s well-designed theaters and state-of-the-art projection and sound (all theaters are digital with one THX certified) as the biggest come on for audience that wants value for money.

But the people behind SM North Edsa are planning for a new trick, to grab their original title from the new kid on the block. They’re planning to renovate the whole mall including the mall’s cinemas, starting from the opening of the Annex to their Sky Garden, said to be more beautiful that TriNoma’s garden site and to the new face of the whole mall, the new face of SM North Edsa.

A new LRT station will also open soon at SM North Edsa, with 1, 000, 000 customers a day, connecting LRT from Monumento to the mall. The people of Trinoma are maybe struggling right now, thinking of their future plans to keep the former people of SM North and their current people, and how can they retain their title.

Additional headache for TriNoma is the upcoming IMAX Theater on SM North Edsa. The plan is all set, renovating the Cinema 4 of The Block to a 800 seat-IMAX Theater for P500 admission, hoping that this would bring people to the original cineplex in the Philippines.

To all who are asking about the opening of SM North's Sky Garden

Philippine Daily Inquirer

(Thumbs up) TAKING shape above the clutter of Edsa is a one-of-a-kind wonder in the metropolis. It’s a Sky Garden that snakes around SM North Edsa, from The Block to the Annex.

It’s a good sign that even mall developers are trying to create a natural landscape—a vast expanse of greenery that should give weary urbanites a chance to breathe. Metro Manila is a megapolis gasping for air.

At last, here is a design that should give mallrats their much needed oxygen supply.

Spanning almost 16,000 sq m, it will be lined and dotted with trees and foliage—perfect for absorbing the smog around. A waterfall (man-made, of course) is at the end of this winding promenade.

Retail stores and restos in sleek glass-and-steel pavilions will rise in the Sky Garden.

The centerpiece of this development is an ampitheater with a skylight atrium. Designed to be the prime events venue of the north, it will have panoramic lights, which should make it quite a sight at night.

The Sky Garden, which is due to open in April, should give mall-goers a fresh view of the cityscape, no matter the congestion.

Spanning almost 16,000 sq m, it will be lined and dotted with trees and foliage—perfect for absorbing the smog around.[/B]

who will absorb it?

i hope the execution is better this time around.

The old SM Garden & Old Facade of SM North looks like a joke compared to how Grand the New SM North looks now. SM North is also installing color changing lights on the wavy facade of the Main Mall building plus the landscapping of its Garden is even more elaborate than the one in Greenbelt so I think when SM North Edsa is relaunched, it will have the Grandest Facade of any RP Mall & will be comparable to the best of the world.

I mean floorings, lightings, interior designs?? Paano ang mga shops sa main building?

Visit the "SkyGarden" when it opens in April to see kung kaano talaga kalaki ang disparity nito sa Old Garden. The SkyGarden will have a stunning backdrop as well as the whole Wavy Facade of the Main Building will be illuminated by color changing neon lights. Sm will actually light up all the front walls of SM North Edsa. The LRT terminal will actually enhance the view of the Mall complex as commuters riding the LRT will have a better overview of the entire complex.

the changing lights were copied from neighbor trinoma and the wavy material aint that original: it was borrowed from mega. stop talking like a pr person and as if the entire project is thoroughly original.

the lrt/mrt station will block some of the view... actually.

^^gosh SM Megamall's facade is lame compared to SM North Edsa. SM Megamall's material is the only thing that's the same & SM Mega's treatment is just in patches. SM North Edsa's front facade is FULLY covered and definitely more elaborate.

Try taking pictures of SM North Edsa when fully relaunched by Quarter 4 of 2009 & compare it to SM Megamall & even SM MoA. Let the pictures speak for themselves, SM North would be far Grander than the other 2 malls.

^^I think SM North Edsa is still the top selling mall in the country though TriNoma is probably not far behind. SM North is expected to launch the Grandest elevated garden in the Phil's by April 2009 and soon start the interior renovation of the "City Center"

PAg tagalog, like MMFF entries, sm north edsa. SM North Edsa won every year as the top grosser of MMFF. visitors, mas marami pa rin ang sa sm north edsa.

really you should try not to speak in praise release mode as if sm north edsa is the most beautiful thing in the world. your superlatives do not match the design.

i was there a few days ago. the sky garden isn't as narrow as i thought it would be. mejo nakukulangan pa ko sa plants and all pero syempre di pa kasi tapos. so far ok naman.

pag maliwanag pa, the waves are nice but nothing's special about it. what does it look like pag gabi? i'm sure maganda lighting nyan.

by the way, what are they going to do with the cyberzone?

onassimus
Feb 12, 2009, 07:42 AM
The old Cyberzone & ace builders+bingo center will be renovated as the need arises...may rumor na gagawing warehouse daw yung 1st floor ng parking building pero that's doubtful because of it's prime location at the back of the main mall. as it is SM was said to have bought more properties adjacent to the mall due to the anticipated influx of people from the upcoming Grand Central Terminal
