It is but time to gather the troops for our dear Lady Spikers.
Many will underestimate a rookie-laden team, but we know that they will not just bow down to the giants.

As a team, they will battle, claw and rally their way to every match.

Let us support them in every game!

Go Ateneo! One Big Fight!

Women's Volleyball: The first almost-won game

Ateneo vs Adamson
25-22, 22-25, 15-25, 25-15, 8-15

You know that saying about how some losses are actually moral victories? Sometimes it's a cop-out and sometimes it's not.

But in the case of the Ateneo Lady Spikers' five-set loss to Adamson to start out their UAAP Season 71 campaign, Ateneo certainly made a statement that rather than fold when down two sets to one, they'll battle, claw, and rally their way through every match.

To understand the severity of that statement, one must go back to Season 70 of the UAAP Women's Volleyball tournament.

Heading into January 9, 2008, the Lady Spikers were tied with FEU for second at 3-1 behind defending champion UST. Their next assignment was a pre-tourney favorite, the Adamson Lady Falcons.

The match was the second one scheduled that day and it sowed the seeds for this campaign. Ateneo went into the game in high spirits but they were soon dampened when their foes made short work of them in the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-13, in a superb display of blocking and hitting.

Early in the fourth quarter, setter Karla Bello injured her ankle, which further stymied Ateneo's attack. A few minutes later, middle blocker Bea Pascual rose for a twisting spike but landed awkwardly and with a shriek that silenced the Blue Eagle Gym crowd of a few hundred. It took a few minutes before she was carried out with an ACL injury that would knock her out of the tournament.

Although Pascual's injury galvanized the team in the third set, they still fell, 25-22, casting a pall of uncertainty on the season.

Ateneo did finish with a 8-6 record, its best ever in the tournament and good enough for its first-ever Final Four berth. But they were 6-0 against the top three squads of the league and awaiting them in the semis were the Falcons.

Just as it was in the elimination rounds, Adamson swept Ateneo in all their sets for a perfect 9-0. Every game was finished in an hour and 15 minutes.

It was a crazy off-season as the team saw the exit of coach Ronald Dulay who moved down the road to UP. San Sebastian's legendary coach Roger Gorayeb was brought in and almost immediately, the team was overhauled.

"We need a change in our mindset and in our attitude towards the game of volleyball," said Gorayeb who was fresh from his V-League conquest of UST. "And for now I only need these 10 players."

The only holdovers were Pascual, Kara Acevedo, Steph Gabriel, Misha Quimpo, and Averil Paje. And there were five rookies -- Fille Cainglet, Angeline Gervacio, Gretchen Ho, Jamenea Ferrer, and Aillysse Nacachi.

Pascual, only in her junior year, inherited the mantle of team captain.

Cainglet and Gervacio are from St. Scholastica's College where they led the Junior Scions to back-to-back WNCAA volleyball crowns. Cainglet was MVP for three years running while Gervacio was adjudged the Best Attacker in last year's Juniors tournament.

Gretchen Ho was Acevedo's teammate at Immaculate Concepcion Academy where they formed a fearsome attack line along with Chyna Ledesma.

The Lady Spikers' new setter is Jamenea Ferrer who is from Hope Christian High School. She distinguished herself in the Shakey's Girls V-League. where she led her school to the title and was hailed as Best Setter and MVP for her superb efforts.

The last rookie is Aillysse Carol Nacachi, a middle blocker from Canossa Academy.

The Lady Falcons too unveiled their new look. Gone were their heavy hitters in setter Janet Serafica, wing spiker Jackie So and Michaelle Segodine. But they also featured a high-scoring rookie in Paulina Soriano.

In the first set, featuring an energized attack and some good blocking with Pascual back in the middle, Ateneo took the first set 25-22.

Falcons coach, Minerva Pante, returned the favor by having her players come out with an energized attack that found open floor in the Ateneo defense. Incredibly, a 10-minute brownout delayed the second set and cooled down the Lady Spikers when they found their bearings. The respite allowed Adamson to settle down and they upended Ateneo for their own 25-22 win in the second set.

Unable to regain their momentum, Ateneo fell into a deep hole 10-3 early in the third set and were unable to mount a rally as the Lady Falcons were a set away from notching their first win of the season.

But the lights went out once more and the resulting 10-minute delay allowed Ateneo to soothe their nerves and focus on their game plan. They went back to the court with renewed purpose and took the fourth set 25-15 and the stage was set for a pulsating finish.

The fifth set had all the makings of a close game that would go down the wire as both exchanged points for an early 4-4 tie. Then a spate of errors and lapses in defense allowed Adamson to finally put away Ateneo 15-8.

"Sayang," said Gorayeb as he smacked his hands together after the match. "May chance manalo. Pero maganda rin pinakita ng mnga bata. Hindi sumuko at lumaban. Pag nag-click na mga yan lalong gaganda yung laro nila."

Gervacio and Cainglet led the team in scoring with 16 points apiece while Acevedo and Ho both chipped in 11. Pascual, who showed no tentativeness in doing battle at the net, added 5 while Ferrer finished with 4.

Gorayeb sat down and allowed himself to relax. He was pretty worked out in the last two hours. He hoped for a first win in his first-ever UAAP stint. It wasn't so much for himself as for his team and his girls. He stood and patted Acevedo on the cheek and joined his team for a post-game huddle.

11 sila at first, pero ayun, nung V-League, di na kasama si Khrysette Onishi (the one on Gervacio's left), kaya 10 na ulit. ;)

That Thrilling Won Game That Almost Got Away
Ateneo vs. UE
25-17, 25-19, 20-25, 16-25, 24-22
by rick olivares

During Ateneo’s first game of the season last Sunday, Roger Gorayeb, resplendent in blue, stood throughout the whole game perhaps an indication of how big it was going up against the Adamson Lady Falcons.

In this second match of the year versus the UE Amazons, he stood up only once during the first two sets and it was only for a few seconds. When his Lady Spikers committed an error or misplayed the ball, he planted his left hand into the side of his face in dismay.

By the time the game had reached a fifth set after UE had come back from two sets down, he was in a state of controlled fury. He threw down his bottle of mineral water in disgust during the disastrous fourth set when the Recto volleybelles wrested the momentum from his faltering squad.

The hallmark of last year’s offense was that the attack came from the wings and from the middle.

This year, a lack of heavy scoring from the middle has forced the open spikers to shoulder much of the attack load and that has made the offense somewhat predictable. Gorayeb concedes that the team is a year or two away from becoming a major contender but that doesn’t mean that his Lady Spikers will not give it the old college try in Season 71.

The UE squad may not make anyone quake in their sneakers more so after they played so poorly in the first two sets, but the Amazons of Coach Virginia De Jesus are certainly not wanting in spunk.

With Ateneo ahead 9-8 in the third set, the team lapsed into a series of errors and poor execution. UE forged ahead with 6 straight points to go up 9-14.

Another 8-0 blitz by UE that gave them a 13-21 lead guaranteed that there would be a fourth set. “Binigyan nila ng buhay,” explained one of media reporters covering the game as the crowd got into the now exciting match. “Medyo nag-relax.”

Against Adamson last weekend, the two brownouts changed the momentum for both teams. In this game that had all the makings of a laugher, the shift was more of the human kind.

It was a disturbing trend that Gorayeb noted also in the first match – a propensity to commit errors in bunches that tend to demoralize the team that sinks their play. And they had once more fallen prey to that against UE (the Lady Spikers average 38 errors a game).
.
If Charo Soriano scored the bulk of last year’s points, the good thing about this year is the attack is spread a little more. And in this match, the veterans – particularly Misha Quimpo and Bea Pascual as they chipped in 13 and 10 points to the team’s collective 79 points (their opponents surrendered 31 points off errors).

The team is young without a doubt but they showed remarkable resiliency in their last two matches that have both gone down the wire. Inexperience and all, this is a team that does not give up. And that builds character.

The fifth set featured eight lead changes and several errors that had a prolonged the suspense and the match.

With two points to go in the fifth set at 13-11, a service error by Quimpo gave some life back to UE. And when they had a chance to put Ateneo away at 20-21, Mary Grace Masankay returned the service error to notch the game at 21-all.

Then Pascual scored the last of her points off a spike. Angeline Gervacio added one of her own before Quimpo capped her best performance thus far as she finished off their equally resilient foes with a power drive UE got not receive.

After the match, the team had smiles on their faces as they got that hard-earned first win and Gorayeb’s first in the UAAP. The coach was understandably upset that it could have been a short afternoon for them. But look on the bright side, how good can this team be after they’ve played a few more games and collected a few more wins? Think of what we might see when Ateneo Lady Spikers are finally on?

nice article. As I said, errors lang talaga nadadale ang ADMU.

It's also sad to note na hindi man lang na mention ang name ni Acevedo, nu na ba nagnyari sa iyo, Ineng.

Parang non-existent ka na sa team. Buti pa si quimpo, had her biggest game na daw against UE:mecry:

siya nga yung ROY last year.

Sana i-surprise niya tayo just like what she used to do before.

Hayy! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to comment on their game yesterday. XMAS Party kasi ng Company namin. Although I was able to see some action from 4th to 5th set.

All I could say, this team has a making of a champion! They have nothing to lose, ika nga ng mga commentators. ADMU always give us and the other teams a good game despite their inexperience to college hardcore volleyball.

KUDOS to the Team for bringing out the best in them in every game! Bawi lang next game! Sana madali nilang ma-tune up ang mga lapses nila.

Saludo kami sa inyo!

Well, they are really working on it. A little boost will do.

Well, it's what we call 'birth pains' to a new Ateneo Team.

That Five-Setter That Says Much About This Team’s Character
By Rick Olivares

Ateneo vs. FEU
21-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-13, 9-15
12/13/08

If the defending champs expected a 1-2-3 match against the volleybelles from Loyola Heights, then they were right.

At least for the first two sets. It seemed Far Eastern University (FEU) was going to make short work of the visiting team notwithstanding the scores since they gave up many service errors that translated into Ateneo points. Behind the power plays of Rachel Daquis, Shaira Gonzalez, and Irish Morada, the home team seemed intent on sweeping Ateneo off the court.

In the first set, Ateneo immediately went down 0-5 behind the solid hitting and blocking of FEU and that ultimately proved to be the margin for the opener. By the second set, just when it seemed that FEU would coast on a 16-9 lead, the Ateneo Lady Spikers slowly came back behind Angeline Gervacio and points off the bench by Averil Paje. Soon they were tugging at the coattails of the Lady Tamaraws 19-21 and the defense was beginning to hold.

After Misha Quimpo stopped Daquis for a kill for a 5-4 lead in the third set, the Ateneo Lady Spikers seized the lead for good. It was their turn to give FEU fits as their defense held.
When the green and gold team threatened at 18-17, a service error by April Jose gave Roger Gorayeb’s team some breathing space. “Ewan ko kung naniniwala kayo sa sarili ninyo pero ako naniniwala ako sa inyo,” thundered the blue and white’s new coach. “Pakita ninyo kung sino kayo.”

Bea Pascual and Quimpo blocked Gonzalez on the very next play for another crucial point. And despite a service error by Jem Ferrer, the visiting team showed that they were for real when they rattled off the match’s final five points to take the third set and more importantly, the momentum.

As the teams changed courts for the fourth, FEU’s boss Nestor Pamilar sounded off a warning to his team, “Ginising niyo ang Ateneo. Tapusin niyo na kung di aabot ‘to ng fifth set.”

It’s a young Ateneo team all right. They’re up against the defending champs that took down a mighty UST side in last year’s finals. The Lady Tams were in their homecourt with their cheering squad booming “Oh yeah!” with their every point. The Ateneans were not expected to win.

Oh yeah? During the fourth set, the FEU cheerleaders changed their tune to, “Oh, crap!”

The Ateneo volleybelles behind team captain Pascual and rookies Fille Cainglet and Angeline Gervacio walloped the champs 25-13 and sent doubts in their head as they took the fourth.

After a 2-2 score in the final set, a pair of check outs and a side error gave FEU the lead at the turn 5-8.

“Dito ako kinakabahan,” said Gorayeb in the sidelines as assistant Clint Malazo presided over the huddle. “Dito lumalabas yung pagkabata ng team.”

Ateneo stayed close at 8-11 after Pascual hammered home a point against Cherry Vivas, but that was the last gasp FEU’s lead was too great to overhaul.

When the game buzzer went off, an appreciative FEU crowd showered their opponents with hearty cheers.

They were not expected to win by their foes much less put up a fight. But Ateneo without fanfare or any trace of misplaced confidence took to the court and gave everyone a glimpse of what could be when they’ve jelled and added a few more pieces to the puzzle. They had played three straight five-setters and though have come short in two of them, showed their fighting heart.

After the match, you could see the pained look on many of the players’ faces. They may not understand it now as they can only see a loss, but they’ve got a winning attitude that should serve them well in the years to come.

i honestly thought that ateneo's best season was last year when they made it to the final 4 on account of dlsu's misfortune. but by getting roger gorayeb to agree to coach ateneo and the performance of the 4 rookies, there's a strong chance that they may be better this year.

Ateneo Men's Volleyball Match 4: Rarefied Air
by Rick Olivares, www.bleachersbrew.blogspot.com

Rarefied Air
Ateneo vs. FEU
25-19, 25-23, 25-16
by rick olivares

There were a little over a dozen people inside the gym yet it sounded like a big match was going on.

Inside, the Ateneo Men’s Volleyball Team was getting their collective butts chewed by its Head Coach Oliver Almadro. After leading the way in the recent Miranda Cup Volleyball Invitational Tournament, the team faltered in the stretch with poor play and a lack of cohesiveness.

Almadro read them the riot act and his voice reverberated throughout the cavernous Blue Eagle Gym. When he was done, the new coach (who served as an assistant to Ronald Dulay last year) thought he lost his team. Instead, heading into Wednesday, December 17, 2008, they were riding a three-game win skein. Something totally unheard of in three decades. And now they were up against the defending champions Far Eastern University who were still a formidable team even if they lost quite a few starters to eligibility.

When your team has been to the nether regions of sporting infamy (read: losing and losing badly at that), any undertaking like this is history.

They had not taken a set nor beaten FEU in a decade. They had won four straight in more than a generation and they had not been a joy to watch since… their last match when they came back from behind to beat La Salle.

Almadro not only developed a proper and high impact training program for the team but the players were beginning to round out into their own.

Team captain AJ Pareja was heavily recruited to play for other big programs (one other team manager ridiculed the Ateneo team for not even having male models lined up) but he instead chose to go to Ateneo where he became the first ever recipient of a volleyball scholarship. Standing a tall six foot four, his spikes can be very devastating and with his height, he can be a force at the net. But instead he played below his potential.

With newfound focus and maturity, Pareja was not only leading his team in scoring but has been a legitimate MVP candidate. He’s learned better to find the right angles and trajectory to bombard foes who have been mostly unable to receive those powerful smashes of his.

“I can’t tell you how good this feels,” he faltered at describing his feelings about the team’s standing. “But we’d like to keep this going.”

But for them to keep the win streak going, they needed to raise their desire and intensity on the court.

Playing at the Arena in San Juan, you might have confused the FEU team as the one ruling the leader board as they yelled, cheered, pumped their fists, and talked smack.

Almadro called time and asked them about their timidity on the court. It was a simple reminder to kick some butt and play some winning Ateneo volleyball. And the team responded with some superb defense and playmaking.

One of the keys to the team’s success has been the play of setter Ed Ortega. Now getting more minutes, he has been more vocal on the court calling out plays and setting up his teammates. But where he has been invaluable is his blocking at the net.

With Julborg Africa out on account of academics, Duane Teves has stepped into the starting six and provided thunderous production as an open spiker and with his serve that has made it difficult for opposing teams to receive and execute.

And another key weapon has been JR Intal. With Macky Limgenco and Mark Salvador having graduated, Almadro needed someone to step up. And he had a long talk with Intal.

The coach knew it wouldn’t be difficult to prod the third year player to take the challenge. “After all, I knew he came from a family of athletes and alam ko na gusto niya ng challenge,” said Almadro.

And Intal has responded with a game that has given the team a different dimension. His off-speed spikes and dinks are probably the most unorthodox and entertaining shots to see in college sports since Mark Cardona was lofting those hook shots for La Salle in the basketball tournament. They have been difficult to defend and anticipate. “It’s crazy as it has no spin to it,” marveled Ateneo Volleyball Program Head Sherwin Malonzo.

With Ortega, Teves, and Intal combining with Timmy Sto. Tomas, Pareja, and libero Vian Serranilla (and Xavier Senoren), Ateneo found their bearings and took the first set 25-19.

But it was a game FEU team that took the court for the second set. Tamaraws Coach George Pascua challenged them, “Defending champions kayo. Pakita niyo sa kanila yun!”

And their made a game of it as they forged a 23-all tie after a Teves spike off Kirk Beliran was ruled a side out. Almadro protested the check out that wasn’t called but he quickly regained his composure and sued for time. “Atin na ‘to. One stop. Receive lang na maganda and ibaon niyo na.”

Intal responded with a block on FEU’s Jan Paglinawan who is a contender for Rookie of the Year 24-23 Ateneo.

On the next play, Intal against stopped FEU’s counter for the set point and a 2-set lead by Ateneo.

By the third set, Ateneo put on a clinical display of teamwork, defense, and playmaking as they made short work of the defending champs who for the second successive game went down 1-2-3.

It was the first time Ateneo beat FEU in a decade and taken three sets from them in succession. It was also the first time in over three decades that a Blue Spikers squad has posted a 4-0 record.

“This is new territory for us,” beamed a happy Almadro. “So we’ll take it one game at a time.”

There were some four dozen people inside the gym. Yet from the sound of it, you wouldn’t think that an exciting volleyball match was played.

But it resounded with the singing of the alma mater song by a team that is showing the promise of greatness. And Almadro this time stood behind his team with proud yet humble eyes.

Ateneo Men's Volleyball Team's next game is on Sunday against another unbeaten team and defending champions UST, 11 AM at The Arena. Please support and watch our Blue Spikers. Thank You! Animo Ateneo, One Big Fight!

finally ateneo is also investing in volleyball. hopefully the men's team can continue with what they have now. and with the women's team playing like a veteran team, the volleyball teams should be more formidable next year.

No, Quimpo is not "afflicted" by the sophomore jinx. Haha. She's actually performing well. I'm happy that she improved a lot in attacking, digging, and receiving. And she's committing less errors too.

Kara is slowly crawling back to her original form. :)

That “Grudge” Match That They Had to Win
Ateneo vs. UP
25-23, 25-22, 25-11
by rick olivares

There was pressure to play UP their record notwithstanding. Despite the lofty positions of DLSU and FEU with respective 4-0 and 3-1 slates, the race to the UAAP Women’s Volleyball Championship is wide open and the Ateneo Lady Spikers are an intriguing mix to the competition.

How many times have you heard it’s a young team that plays tall in spite of that fact and yet at the change of courts, suddenly plays like every bit their age?

How much fun is it to watch a team you want to badly to win?

Playing five-setters is a test of character but it’s also courting disaster. You know what they say when a competition goes to its ultimate game… anything can happen.

Of course, the UP Lady Maroons are not going to keel over and give a game away. Not only are they taller but there’s added incentive for both teams to win because of their coach. Or in the case of the Ateneo Lady Spikers… ex-coach.

Although the Ateneo women’s team made the Final Four last season, their off-season was marred by a less than amicable parting with Coach Ronald Dulay who departed for UP while trying to tag along the heralded batch of freshmen recruits. And prior to Dulay moving to Loyola Heights for the head coaching position, San Sebastian’s Roger Gorayeb was also considered for the position. Now the two friends were in an odd position of trying to win one over the other with either one not wanting to lose.

"We," thought Ateneo Captain Bea Pascual before the game, "have to take this game and not go to another five set match."

And as is the case whenever Ateneo and UP face one another, whatever their position in the standings are no quarter is going to be given.

Which explains why Ateneo wasn’t having an easy time against their counterparts.

The first set was a battle on equal terms but UP forged a 23-all tie. A crucial side out was earned by Ateneo before they put away their foes 25-23.

In the second set, it was the same trend until the Lady Eagles broke from a 12-all tie behind a kill by Angeline Gervacio and back-to-back blocks by Gretchen Ho on UP’s Rebecca Montero for a three-point lead. But the Lady Maroons would not go away and creeped back in 21-20 after Amanda Isada scored on an ace.

Pascual gave her side possession after UP misplayed her spike then rookie Fille Cainglet added an ace of her own to inch closer to a two sets lead.

When a Gervacio spike checked out off Sheila Salaysal, the Lady Maroons not only lost the second set 25-22 but had the wind knocked out of their sails in the final third as Ateneo played better defense to complete their first three-setter of the tournament 25-11.

After the match, Dulay quickly ducked out as Gorayeb heaved a sigh of relief. With NU the remaining team on the 2008 schedule, the Ateneo team can possibly finish at 3-2 and properly prepare for La Salle and UST come the New Year. “Ang importante masaya din yung mga bata,” he declared. “Paginisip mo, kung may nakuha man kami na kahit isang laro nung laban sa Adamson o sa FEU mas maganda ang katayuan natin. But makakarating din tayo diyan.”

'grats naman ADMU

saya ng pasko niyo!

I'm not expecting you win against DLSU but i'm hoping.

Congrats to ADMU for winning against NU. ADMU vs. DLSU in volleyball hehe... If I'm not mistaken ang ADMU WVT noong early 2000's yata laging lagpak sa standings while DLSU is consistent right? Iba na ngayon malakas ang lineup for both teams and a championship contender ang both teams ngayon and in years to come.
I think ADMU-DLSU game will be a toss-up for both teams. Although may experience ang DLSU team but remeber DLSU never been to a playoff game in the last 3 years while ADMU nakapasok sila sa final four last year.

Although nakapasok nga last year, many of the lady eagles are rookies so parang hindi din.. :D DLSU has the edge pero laban lang :)

dlsu has the edge but they can be defeated. the dlsu lady spikers have so many weapons at their disposal and a very tall front line as well.
if ateneo can show the composure and the fighting spirit that they showed against adamson and feu then they may pull off an upset

DLSU is vulnerable. :D

And they have the better setter, so sana take advantage. :)

if they can do what they did to FEU and AdU, and with a little bit of luck, they can hopefully beat DLSU and UST..

If they beat DLSU, siguradong tataas ang respeto sa ADMU volleybelles and kung mangyari yun malamang matatalo nila UST.

Kaya naman yan. The ladies already earned the respect of a lot of people by taking two contenders to their limit. I hope the girls can at least take the projected champions to their limit also and, with a little bit of help from above, make an upset. :D

An ADMU vs DLSU Finals will increase not only the ratings of Studio 23 but will add popularity to volleyball. Magiging parang promotion of volleyball if ever. Next na lang siguro yung school pride.

^I think for Ateneo to win, let Alarca score and take care of the others. :) Or the girls can let the others score and just focus on Alarca but that will be way risky. They did this against Adamson. Benting was dug and blocked well but Gustilo and Soriano stepped up.

But, honestly, having good floor defense will be the key to Ateneo's victory. UAAP is a crazy tournament. Anything can happen.

Parang naging basketball ah.. Parang let player X score but shackle the rest :rotflmao:

From my point of view, just play smart. Let them play the eagles' game and not the other way around. And tama ka, Defense will be the key. They can't win if they can't score. :D

nakakatawa lang kasi in men's basketball, depensa din ang susi ng ating tagumpay. haha, napakadefensive naman ng ateneo

anyway, i'm looking forward to seeing the girls in the final four (haha, kompidens!) nakakatuwang our volleyball teams (pati sa men's) are actually performing very well.

At least sa Arena *** game. It can cater to a larger crowd as compared to FEU Gym. Just came from the party, medyo groggy-state pa, pero can't wait to back read some updates on the thread. Checking on some sites too.

Sana ATENEO will give DLSU a run for their money. A veteran team versus a rookie-laden team!

Good luck.

That Game That Suddenly Got Exciting
Ateneo vs. NU
25-11, 25-11, 24-26, 25-16

Roger Gorayeb thought it wasn’t one bit amusing.

When his Ateneo Lady Spikers are up against the upper echelon teams, they raise the level of their game. But when facing the lower seeded teams, they seem to have this misplaced overconfidence.

He’d rather that they be business-like and show no remorse in dispatching their foes because the opposition would readily do the same to them.

Even after all the years of coaching, losing is something longtime NU Coach Johnny Candoy cannot get used to. Hampered by the lack of funds and resources, he knows his team is every bit an underdog.

With the arrival of the Sys, he is clearly excited about the possibilities. When the new NU gym arises, his team can take comfort that they will finally have their own court that they do not have to share with the basketball team. And who knows, they might be able to land some blue chip recruits of their own.

His toughest job though is keeping his girls upbeat. “Losing is painful,” he said softly.

The first two sets went by quick as the Ateneo Lady Spikers behind a rejuvenated Kara Acevedo and Averil Paje made NU pay for their sloppy defense.

Gorayeb leaned back on his seat with a look of contentment as his team took a commanding two sets to none lead via twin 25-11 drubbings.

In the third set, it seemed Ateneo would go on its second consecutive sweep as they scored the first three points. Gorayeb sat down Bea Pascual and Fille Cainglet for long stretches. Aillysse Nacachi even got in some quality time in her first appearance of the season.

Candoy sued for time and angrily told his squad to receive better so they could better put the ball in play. “One good receive meron kayong chance para maganda yung palo,” he thundered.

His team behind Mervic Mangui, Lorie Simon, and libero Jenny Reyes suddenly dug in deep and did just that as they took the fight to Ateneo.

When NU scored on a kill to go up at 18-17, Gorayeb who was sitting at the edge of his seat, had seen enough and dispatched Pascual, Cainglet, and Angeline Gervacio back in the game. But it was too late. The Lady Bulldogs were in the fight.

Acevedo scored on a spike to tie the game at 24-all, but a Cainglet side out gave NU the set 26-24 and sent the game into an unlikely fourth set.

Ateneo immediately retook control of the fourth set but it wasn’t easy as NU fought and rallied every step of the way. This time, Ateneo, with their game faces back on, put away their pesky foes as Pascual ended the match 25-16 with her eighth point on a spike that Jenny Reyes was unable to dig.

Candoy had a smile on his face after the match. His team wasn’t expected to pick up a set from Ateneo but they did. And they created some anxious moments back there. They might have lost 3-1, but they have nothing to be ashamed of, he encouraged his squad.

Gorayeb exhaled as Pascual’s smash found an empty space of hardcourt. His team was now at 3-2 and the win was a nice way to end 2008 (the games are to resume come January 2009).

“Medyo naging exciting,” the coach sheepishly admitted as he scratched the back of his head. “Pero kita mo naman kapag gusto nila tapusin kaya nila.’

He took a moment to commend his players before he made his way back to the dugout (the team was leaving for Batangas that night for their Christmas Party and team building).

He wore a huge grin on his face.

Against DLSU, defense and smart pLays are the onLy ways IMO para mataLo ang DLSU. Defensive team ang DLSU, open spikes might not be effective knowing how LethaL this team in bLocking.

Maybe this time, FiLLe can step up kasi magaLing siya sa smart pLays. Magiging factor din si Kara kasi she's back in her groove. Mahihirapan siLang i-defense ang kanyang mga paLo knowing she's a Lefty. NaaLaLa ko tuLoy Last year when they were up against DLSU. Charo was always checked. Kara stepped up and she was unstoppabLe. MaaLaLa ko rin, BaLLentyne was aLso pLaying Last year. What happened to her? Her performance was okay. Pero tindi ng mga spikes- dumadagundong! I-improve Lang niya ang kanyang agiLity and timing, she can be Likened to BouLee with her power hits

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

"But the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High...his kingdom will never end.'"
Luke 1:30-33

During the Christmas season, our thoughts turn to the source of joy and hope born in a humble manger on a holy night more than 2,000 years ago. Each year, Christians everywhere celebrate this single life that changed the world and continues to change hearts today. The simple and inspiring story of the birth of Jesus fills our souls with gratitude for the many blessings in our lives and promises that God's purpose is justice and His plan is peace.

nakakatuwa nga dahil in the past basketball lang ang inatupag ng athletic office ng ADMU ngayon They are scouting and recruiting players from other high schools. It's evident na ADMU wants a title run in the UAAP volleyball and why not sikat na volleyball ngayon.

wala pa bang review & complete score ng ADMU vs La Salle yesterday!

talagang pinaghandaan ng La Salle ang ADMU kahapon but lady eagles fight till d end. Rookies has learn experiences hirap sila talaga but there are times na naka-kalusot ang admu rookies. Veterans team captain Bea Pascual did a great job to uplift d rookies & d team itself. Misha Quimpo did well too. Kara Acevedo should change her strategy magaling si Kara but this season kulang na kulang pa yun pinakikita nya.
d libero Gab shld work hard sayang most of d time di mo nahahabol yun bola?

*okay*On ur next game over UST malaki ang chance ng lady eagles to win it.
Kaya nyo yan... basta fight ng fight!

:)One Big Fight Ateneo!

Good Game to the Lady Eagles although i'm not from Ateneo but i see the potential of these girls in the near future. They will be a championship contender.

I watched their yesterday. I saw some Ateneo fans and alumnis complaining on the referee's call because after an Atenean spike, i think there was a contact on the ball and i think Gohing or Martinez contacts the ball but the refs awarded the point to DLSU and it's outside.

I think there should be a compeLLing reason why Kara had only a minute or so pLaying on the fLoor. C'mon, bLame it again to her injury? That's too oLd reason to take.

Sana someone wiLL get to the bottom of this.

More than not, she couLd have made a difference during the game. More than winning the game, she couLd have stretched it a four-setter or to a deciding set.

it's always been fille who's doing that backline attack, dzi needs to improve na kasi fille and gretch are doing well na. di na ganong effective yung sheer power kasi scouted na sila eh. go ateneo!

Ateneo exceeded my expectations

maturity Lang taLaga kuLang niLa

esp sa part ni DZ and fiLLe

they can very weLL spike hard

pero they need to vary their hits

kaya yun naba bLock Lage

Well, as what I've seen in their last game, hindi naman masama ang laro ng Ateneo. What they lack was the 'UAAP experience'. Despite La Salle's powerhouse line-up, di sila nagpatalo nang ganun-ganon lang. Some salient points in their match.

a. The best strategy against the best offensive team in town is to have a very good floor defense. Alam naman natin na may height advantage ang La Salle, so since Ateneo has not much players to counter La Salle, they should give a better coverage on the ground most esp. from their libero. May mga instances na when Ateneo's spikes are blocked, wala nang coverage sa back line.

b. The best offense against the No. 1 Blocking Team is to have their spikes go against the blockers or do 'drop shots'. 'Di naman dinadaan ang laro sa lakas ng palo kundi sa utakan. 'Though Dzi and Fille has the power hits, they might as well learn some variations to the attacks. Well, Gretchen and Bea had some good quicks in the game pero it lacked consistency in the game.

c. A great play starts from a good reception. Although, I will give Jam the credit for coming out good sets from these receptions.

Dzi - great hitter, more variations in her attacks, try down-the-line (deadly 'yun).

Fille - nice 2nd line attacks, malakas!, great digs, nice smile!

Jam - the best setter of the season!

Gretchen - beauty, brains, talent! love those quicks!

Mischa - improved a lot.

Bea - more in-court leadership and motivation!

Kara - well, hope to see more action!

Gab - more floor coverage.

Overall, a team to watch for the next years! Despite their youth, they gave DLSU a nice game! More experience, more action, more victories! Onwards to their game against UST!

One Big Fight!

In their game against UST kanina, Ateneo has lost focus and determination to play at their best. Fille and Dzi plays were off. Jem has lost its sets due to bad reception. Some of Gretchen's quicks were checked. The veterans, Bea, Kara, Avril and Mischa, failed to motivate the team with their leadership.

The reason why Ateneo failed to give a great game today was because they don't have the veteran 'go-to' player/s during crunch times. Instead, they gave the responsibility to Fille and Dzi, who are both rookies. Kitang-kita pa natin ang kaba sa dalawa. We were expecting Kara and Bea to step-up, but to no avail.

With that responsibility at her back, Dzi lost focus in the game with were bad receptions and blocked spikes. Ateneo should deploy a good in-court support system.

As for this game, I'll give credit to Gretchen Ho for her undying determination. Siya lang yata iyong nagbibigay ng good hits with her quicks and great blocks. Sayang lang it would have been better if she got the support from Dzi and Fille.

With the second round to start this weekend, I hope they can quickly recover from their back2back losses.

Kahit ano man ang mangyari, Ateneo pa rin!

yun na nga nakakadisappoint eh, Bea and Kara should motivate their teammates instead the rookies themselves who are trying to motivate the whole team. well, bawi na lang sa 2nd round. Good luck vs. NU on Sunday.

Kara has not adjusted yet to Jam's sets. Sa 2nd round, magbabago yata rotation ng Ateneo. Parang 'test-the-waters' ang games nila sa first round, since they are of a new line-up. Sana they're off to serious matters this 2nd round. Starting with NU.

:rolleyes:rookies fillet & jem play not so good as this year coming in unlike last year talagang humahataw sila! gervacio & ho try their best but most of the time di nakakalusot sa blocking & gzi hit most of d time is outside. Bea did her best but talagang nahirapan sya sa UST (even she is d team captain she can't do it alone kung pangit ang setting/receiving & defense). Kara is not that good as before kaya napapalitan sya. Quimpo & Paje did their best but malas talaga & d libero Gab daming mistake! siguro naman this is a wake-up call *** maayos nyo ang game as Coach Roger said kalimutan na kung na loss tayo ang importante bumangon tayo you still have a last round to prove it.

:love:I believe in ADMU lady eagles pakita nyo na you can be in top 4 ?

*okay*One big fight Ateneo!

Sa laban against ust, si bea and gretch lang yung nakikita kong nageeffort na kahit papano sundin yung turo ni coach roger. sila dzi and fille i don't know what's happening to them. Mas maganda pa yung laban nila against dlsu. Go ADMU! Manalo matalo fan niyo parin ako! :)

WeLL, I beg to disagree on Kara stiLL adjusting to Jem's setting

for one, since v-League, si Jem na ang setter ng Ateneo

As I watched it, maLakas pa rin naman paLo ni Kara

Though it's blocked most of the times

If they can beat any one of the top 4 teams, soLve na siLa dun

Let's still maintain our high hopes for ADMU.
Sana tapos na iyong adjustment stage nila.
Straight sets against NU.
Better reception and coverage from Gab.
More focus for Dzi and Fille.
Variation plays and sets for Jam.
More quicks for Gretch and BEa.
A more motivated Kara.
All-ready and prepared Avril and Mischa.
A solid and better ADMU Team.

I expect this team to bounce back in their next game. :)

And with their loss to UST, it's all part of their growing experience. Nobody started out their rookie year in such a dominating fashion. You all have to go through such experiences which will either make you stronger or better as an Athlete and as an Individual.

But remember, good recruitment doesn't always correspond to championship trophies. The coach will always play a crucial role in molding these rookies into champions...and with Coach Gorayeb around, they can never go wrong.

With Coach Roger at the helm of this team, malayo ang mararating ng Ateneo. Maybe not this year, but on the years to come. *okay*

Good thing that Ateneo's next game will be against a relatively easier opponent, NU. Their straight-sets back-to-back losses in the first round is the bitter pill that our team should take in order to mature come the second round.

In their next games, I hope that more plays would be given to Bea and Kara, and Gretch. Especially Gretchen Ho, who impressed me a lot in their last few games, you could actually sense her thinking in the court, and wanting to win badly even in the dying minutes of the game. AND, even when the pressure was mounting during the crucial moments of the game, you can see that she's NOT afraid, and ready to rise to the occassion, may puso.

As for Fille and Dzi, they should add dump balls to their arsenal. Understandably so, I think these two girls are still adjusting - Fille trying to add more umph to her spikes, and Dzi trying to lessen it a bit and be more consistent - that's why the support cast in the middle and defense should step up. Being open hitters, they are the go-to ones if the team's floor defense is in disarray. One can just imagine the pressure on these two girls' shoulders, rookies at that.

For their next game against NU, more than anything else, I hope to see more quick plays and smart moves from middle hitters, Pascual and Ho.

Ateneo Women's Volleyball: The Trying Times

Ateneo Women’s Volleyball at the End of the First Round of Season 71

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BquY6zd9Wxo/SW99ETqZvwI/AAAAAAAAF4o/UctgCYYmy3w/s320/Waiting+to+be+served.JPG http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_BquY6zd9Wxo/SW99jI5ErwI/AAAAAAAAF4w/cIdWnnBLgi4/s400/Six+Pack.JPG

The Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Team is young yet some mistake them to be some parts old. It is a misnomer because of the holdovers from last year’s squad, only a couple saw quite some playing time. So in reality it is really a young team. One laden with potential in spite of a glaring lack of ceiling to battle the statuesque frontlines of opposing teams.

The Lady Spikers have shown that they can hang with the best of them when they extended Adamson and FEU to five sets where they fell because of a lack of experience. At the same time they’ve surrendered sets to UE and NU when they should have plastered them with brutal finality and utmost urgency. And when they lost badly to DLSU and UST maybe they were expected to put up more of a fight than getting swept in one, two, and three.

They’re like a diesel engine that starts slowly but once they get going well, they get going. Only at times, other squads have racked up a sizeable lead that’s a little difficult to overhaul.

Former football great Marcel Desailly once said that an athlete’s performance is 50% skills and talent and 50% confidence. It’s all true as the latter – confidence – is borne out of playing time and that begets consistency and toughness. After all, how do you know how to react to situations when you’re hardly on the court to effect what is taught in practice?

Wins make people overlook certain details but loses magnify even the most minute and nothing is left sacred or deemed trivial.

There’s an upside to this because the losses sting which means people care. The new-found attention that volleyball has received can only mean good for the sport in general and for the Ateneo team because that means better training and support will be made available.

And you have to like the fact that they so want to win. They have a captain who cares and values the team and who strives to set an example. They have a squad that has come together after a semi-tumultuous pre-season where they planned their own team building session and have instituted amongst themselves ways to improve chemistry and bonding.

It’s not a perfect picture yet even so they’re still good enough to compete for a Final Four spot. They know they have to beat one of the upper tier teams if they want to make it to the post-season.

The losses have been tough and serve as a jarring reminder of the work and sacrifice that needs to be done. Here is where they see what they are made of and how good they can be. It’s gut check time where they cannot afford a few more mistakes or slippage.

They will put in their time and only need support. Do you jump on the bandwagon because volleyball is in vogue and there’s a sexist reason to watch a pretty face?

The Lady Spikers have endured their forever version of the Dark Ages and even went through a revolving door of coaches in the last couple of years.

They’re out there competing to an audience of mom and pop, three cheerleaders, members of the men’s volleyball team, and the odd fan or two like me who has made it his personal mission to help these teams in the past couple of years.

Yes, these are trying times fraught with an uphill climb and tough foes but remember how a wise man once said that isn’t the journey everything. And that sometimes is what we can ever ask from another.

Go Ateneo!
