Returning Alarca leads scoring in UAAP women’s volleyball

MANILA, Philippines – Ever wonder why the La Salle Lady Archers are in the company of Adamson and defending champion Far Eastern University on top of the standings in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament?

Try asking the returning Jacqueline Alarca as the 20-year-old veteran spiker is Season 71’s leading scorer after five games based on statistics released by TMX Sports.

She already amassed 94 points making her one of the favorites for the most valuable player (MVP) honors. Her offensive prowess and the support of her teammates allowed the Lady Archers to join defending champion FEU and Adamson on top of the standings.

The three teams enter the Holiday break with a 4-1 card.

Alarca, who took a leave of absence from La Salle in the third trimester, is making good use of her comeback as she leads the league in aces and blocks with 12 and 15 each, and third in spikes (66).

University of Santo Tomas’ Aiza Maizo could threaten Alarca’s MVP bid as the Tigresses’ team captain is ranked second in scoring with 89 points.

The graduation of Mary Jean Balse and Venus Bernal widened Maizo’s role with the Tigresses responding with a league-best 12 aces and 16 blocks, to tie Alarca, and 65 spikes.

Adamson’s Angela Benting placed third with 84 points (67 spikes and 10 aces), while rookie Angeline Gervacio of Ateneo (74 spikes) and FEU’s crowd darling Rachel Anne Daquis (66 spikes) are tied from fourth to fifth places with 83 points each.

FEU teammates Shaira Gonzales (79 points) and Macaila Morada (74 points) came in at sixth and seventh places while La Salle’s Stephanie Mercado, former Asian sprint queen Lydia de Vega-Mercado’s daughter, occupied the eight spot with 73 points.

Adamson’s rookie Paulina Soriano landed at ninth place with 68 markers while University of the East’s Ginaflor Alanguilan completed the Top 10 with 62 points. – GMANews.TV

It's definitely Jacq ang #1 ko for MVP. Maizo is #2 sa MVP rankings but she is no leader while Jacq naman ramdam ng DLSU presence niya besides UST is a sub-par team this season while DLSU is #1 kaya my vote for MVP goes for Jacq.

If they did kasi hindi pwedeng lakarin kahit Dean pa ng Masterals ang umareglo sa mga prof nila. San ka ba nag aral? Iether you didnt pass the entrance exam ng La Salle or you cant afford to pay DLSU's tuition fees. So sorry. Daming players na nag try out here but didnt pass the entrance exam kaya sila napunta sa ibang universities.
