it's not an autobiography. it's about his experience as a migrant worker in the states. yung mga pilipino na nag-pupunta sa tate, pag-balik dito, saksakan ng yabang. yun pala, puro tadyak, suntok, sipa lang ang inaabot nila doon.

lolz..........after seeing WITHOUT SEEING THE DAWN thread, i remembered college lit..........and remembered how i was the only one from my group (back in college) who read the book we were about to report from beginning to end.......
the book was.......AMERICA IS IN THE HEART :*)
well labski....it's only part-autobiographical......and the book requires time and effort talaga (nakita mo na ba kung gaano kakapal at ka-fine yung print nung book???)....and you might get lost with all the characters......
basically, "America" was the symbol used for freedom, realization of dreams, better life, dignity.....and the storyteller brings you to diff places of America, thru one problem after another.......only to find out, at last....that what he was looking for was in him all along.......

America is in the Heart was one of the best novels i've ever read! ganda!
i cried when i read it...it was so easy to sympathize with Bulosan's characters, even the part wherein one of the main characters (4got na who) threw a handful of nails to puncture tires of passing cars para magka-customer sa vulcanizing shop niya.. you'd only feel pity for them...
read the book again and again, this is one Pinoy novel you'll be proud of!

Aba, aba, gamitin daw ba ang PEX para sa kanyang paper!
Hoy walangdila!
Sigurado ka bang magkaklase tayo? Kay Jimmy Abad? Kasi last meeting I wrote your name on the blackboard, wala namang nag-react.
Anyway, this novel surprisingly made it into my list of favorites. Surprising because I wasn't counting on actually enjoying it. You know how it goes with requirements, right? Sige, gtg. Good luck sa paper natin.

America is in the hearts of men that died for freedom; it is also in the eyes of men that are building a new world. America is a prophecy of a new society of men: of a system that knows no sorrow or strife or suffering. America is a warning to those who would try to falsify the ideals of freemen.

a portion of my paper on this novel.. :D
This masterpiece of Bulosan howls, though conscientiously, and educates the people about America and the idea of self-actualization after a series of personal struggles with injustices, poverty, and discrimination. One sees sufferings at a different perspective. That through Allos' undertakings, we might come to realize that we can defeat poverty through industry, education, and visions of hope. The same sufferings bring the identity of America, a country which was hard-earned, being sacrificed for and worth dying for because it gives the people who fought for it the reality of life's harshness. America is a state in mind, the fifth chamber in our heart that tells the people that life is brought about by our beliefs that we can survive, toil, and win the paradise that we've been longing for. Allos won, so can we.

if you are looking for criticism on the author and his works, check out "literary criticism in the philippines and other essays" and read how the author, edilberto k. tiempo, pulverizes bulosan (he shows how bulosan commits the "sins" of uncouthness, irrationality, and vulgarization of the basic elements of narration in America is in the Heart)
