It is still too early. Let us wait for the advice of the proper authorities in DLSU sports organization.

i watch hardball last night, interview nila *** mga players na kasali sa outdoor basketball and they say sa la salle daw sila... di ko maalala names nila... di ako sure sa names... ( tolentino and marata) ** lang natatandaan ko...*okay*

I agree with terio. It is really too early to tell. We should not mention names of possible recruits until they are already enrolled in DLSU.

Manguera and Banal are in DLSU already. Tolentino and Marata (UPIS/RIS) already said in Hardball that they want to go to DLSU and the same can be said with Paredes. Unless another "Noble" happens, I don't see any reason why they will opt to go to another school.

"He(Coach Franz) made sure that the rookie class of 2009 would be topnotch. He made sure that his current players would not be complacent about their spots on the team. Coach Franz is not going to lay down and give any team a championship without a good fight.
His rookies are awesome. From the Youth team he may end up getting Gab Banal (Xavier), Jed Manguerra (DLS-Zobel), Papot Paredes (Sacred Heart of Jesus in Cagayan de Oro), Joel Tolentino (UPIS), and Tata Marata (UPIS).
There is also word that Keith Agovida has applied at La Salle along with several other prized rookies. There is one blue chip rookie that also seems to have decided to play in La Salle."

What Omerta? Vagged has identified the players by name. Torres is already attending classes in DLSU. The others will follow unless they do a Sorela or Noble.
Aireyan, kindly read my post and that of Vagged concerning the eligibility of Torres. Due to the Jonas Villanueva rule, Torres will not be eligibile until season 74. Paredes will keep the center position warm until season 74 when he gives way to Torres.
Vagged, remember the exchange we had last year about season 71 recruits? It is now the turn of Franz Pumaren to go shopping and the shopping spree has brought UP to tears. :naughty: Gasgas ang platinum credit card ni Franz, and he may not be done with his shopping spree for another 2-3 blue chippers. :rotflmao:
Now the nice problem for DLSU is who to demote from varsity to make room for all of new blue chippers? I believe only Casio and Walsham have used up their eligibility. The writing is on the wall for Lee and Chandumal if they have a spot on varsity.

Ok, since this silence cannot be maintained, I hope this would not be another Intal and Reyes case, where in these two players were introduced as recruites during one of the La Salle victory party only to find out later they ended up as Blue Eagles.
Since binubulgar mo na rin naman eh pwede na ba namin malaman kung sino pa ang 2 and 3 blue chippers na pwedeng maglaro sa La Salle?

kindly verify this. from what I understand, the Top4 HS recruits that year(JC Intal of Letran HS, Jay-R Reyes of SBC, Zach Estoesta from Cebu and Martin Urra of DLSZ) were simply "invited" to attend and celebrate with DLSU during their Championship party. they themselves were shocked when they were called up onstage and introduced to the entire DLSU community as "Next Year's Top Green Archer Rookies" .. they had not given any sort of commitment yet to any school (except maybe Urra) and only attended the party to have a goodtime. ika nga. parang na-highjack sila and put on the spot in front of thousands of Lasalle Fans ..
ano pa nga ba sasabihin nila in that situation? would they dare say .. "oi hindi po.. sa Ateneo po namin talaga gusto magcollege.." baka hindi na sila makalabas ng buhay nun.. :D
anyway as history shows .. Intal and Estoesta eventually made their way to Ateneo, Jay-R Reyes had a short lived UAAP career at UP(filled with controversies) and concentrated more in the PBL, before making it to the PBA, while Martin Urra had a short stint at DLSU and transferred to CSB.

If you check my previous posts in the thread "Season 72 recruits" in this same fora, the identity of the players were an open secret. The appearance of the 3 players in ANC and their grudging confirmation affirmed what a lot of people have been saying going back to April 2008 when the national youth team was formed. Their confirmation must have bought grimace to team management and coaching staff, smiles to the DLSU faithfuls and anguish to the UP nation.:mecry: The only reason they fail to enroll at DLSU is if their DLSU entrance exam results are horrendous beyond appeal.
It is also no secret that Franz Pumaren is pulling all the stops to recruit Bringas. Signing Bringas will resolve the "doughnut" problem of DLSU and the triumvirate of Bringas, Paredes and Torres will guaranty that the front court rotation will be solid for the succeeding 5 seasons.
I will keep the name of the shooter/slasher to myself for now but his name has been mentioned a few times in the other thread. Scoring from the wing position is now secured for the next 5 seasons even without this mystery player who averaged at least 20 points per game. If Barua and Malabes become inconsistent with their scoring, Franz will not hesitate to field Manguera, Tolentino, Marata and Banal. Please keep in mind that team management may want to keep a spot or two open for next season when Zobel graduates the likes of Elorde, Capacio and de la Paz.
Ruckus is correct in that the recruits were ambushed during the DLSU victory celebration to say they were going to play for DLSU. Of the four, only Intal made an impact in the UAAP. ADMU and DLSU dodged a serious bullet with Reyes and was a definite poison to team chemistry, just ask the people from UP.

Yes, Reyes and Intal were hugot of Letran from other schools.
How ironic that DLSU has started to use Reedley to stash their future players. Akala ko ba, Reedley was renamed Ateneo de Pasig? Switzerland pala ang Reedley! :rotflmao:

Blacksedan, first of all congratulations are in order for a well deserved championship!
Indeed 'tis the season to be jolly as DLSU and Franz are ALMOST done with their christmas shopping and this much i can say, it's getting to be really crowded considering the slots open in team A is technically limited to 4 but could be as much as 8! well , i personally hope we get 7-8 openings so that the cream of the crop recruits will have slots in team A as they are all battle ready but at the end of the day it's up to team management. We'll see :)

Make sure the players know how to fill out the customs and immigration declaration form. You do not want a repeat of the recruit who trained in the States with the team only to be released to UST at the last minute due to his entrance exam results. :naughty:
Are the Green Archers headed for Vegas, LA or Bradenton for training? Maybe the green and blue team can stage a scrimmage for their stateside fans like SBC and ADMU did last year in LA. There is enough alumni in SoCal to support such a game.
I wonder if ADMU will play the Thunderbirds or the Clansmen this summer? I understand that there is an outstanding invitation from the organizers. If they go back to LA, Father Nebres should arrange a game with LMU.

Dang, DLSU is going big time. If the trainning camp is in Chicago, then I know the place. It will be held near the campus of the University of Illinois Chicago on Harrison street. The place is called Attack Center run by Tim Grover.
Who is Tim Grover? He is the former personal trainer of Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. He rehabbed Dwayne Wade before the Olympics. Tim I believe supervises his core trainers base on his methods. There are certain star players that he is handson with their training.
When will the team be in Chicago? Attack Center is one of the few trainning sites favored by wannabe NBA players before the NBA by invitation cattle call and draft in June. The players start flying to Chicago right after the NCAA tournament in late March or early April. Other favored site is that of Joe Abonasar, sorry for the wrong spelling, in LA and Vegas that ADMU and SBC attended. The one in Bradenton is inside the Bollatieri complex owned and run by the IMG Management group.
Here is the small downside of training at Attack Center. When Barack Obama is home, this is one of the few private gyms he uses for pick-up games with his coterie of middle aged basketball junkies. Some of the regulars are not bad ballers having played college ball for Ivy league schools like Harvard and Princeton. Now that Obama is president, the secret service will definitely close of the gym when he decides to play ball.

Casio and Walsham has played out their playing years while rico still has one more left but is still undecided whether to play one more or go pro. Marko has been injured twice and COULD call it quits. The remaining players will have to fight it out with the incoming recruits for that precious team A slot. Like i said in a previous post, we could have as many as 7 positions open.

more like yun na lang ang available choices ni bringas. if reports are to be believed, Ateneo is having a change of heart and mind when it comes to recruiting the hotshot rookie. why? your guess is not as good as mine.

from what i heard you just lost contact with the kid and his handlers, plain and simple. :)
i know what you're trying to imply bluewing, that the kid simply cant cut it out academically, my answer to that has always been each one of us has been given God given talent and it just so happens that his genius is in basketball. lets just respect that and make sure whatever school he decides to play for, will prepare him well for life outside hoops. :)

Had a quick chat with someone close to the Ateneo program, and another with initmate knowledge on UP's.
Ateneo appears to have dropped out of the Arvie lotto. Something to do with an apparent decision already made, and the very real possibility of ending up with a JR Reyes 2.0 scenario. Obviously they want no part of that, especially since the 'Charlie Dy' in this case is slightly more skilled at negotiating. He also has the ability to back up his 'game', so I don't think team management is willing to go there. There is also the very real possibility of a Ronjay Enrile 2.0 here, particularly since SSC has all the aces at its disposal, academics-wise. Can you say hostage?
UP is still holding on to the possibility that they can do a backdoor play here. Bringas has practiced with the Maroons already, (as have a couple of surprising others!), and has practically been promised a sure slot on varsity. The UP-CHK can very well accomodate a student like Arvie without great difficulty as well. So yes, the Maroons are in the hunt to undertake a modest build-up of their own. Unfortunately, one other team is also stockpiling, and certainly not in a modest manner.
So will Arvie still end up in DLSU? If I were a betting man, I wouldn't bet on it, although there are some who would be only too willing to bet on Arvie today and in the years to come.

Dude, have I bashed La Salle? I take shots at certain people/posters. I have nothing against DLSU. There is a difference between bashing the school and taking shots at posters. If you look at my post, I just asked how it feels like to be on the other side of the fence. That question is directed to all the Lasallians who kept on saying bad things about a certain recruit of Ateneo. Ikasasama ng school? I may say something about some players/posters/Lasallians but never the institution. There's a huge difference.
Bias? Well, all of us have our biases. Secondly, why do you consider my question "biased"?

Sorry, you got that wrong. The institution will teach you the values but it is up to you if you want to follow it. But if you choose to see it that way, then that's your problem. I just call a spade a spade.
Careful? I am careful enough to not to take a swipe at the institution.

It is rather sad that Arvie Bringas has become such a hot commodity that wether La Salle or Ateneo gets him, there will always be a perception rightly or wrongly that his services have been bought. In other words, he would be perceived as a mercenary, should he end up with one of these two schools mentioned. It would be better for him to stay with San Sebastian, which has an ace in its sleeve that would make him remain a Stag or at UP where his talent would be used to the fullest. I sincerely hope that he realizes at this early stage, what ever school he chooses, he is not only a basketball player but also a student and should act accordingly. This also holds true with Mr. Agovida who I believe should remain a JRU bomber.

I think perfect fit si Bringas sa DLSU, because he'll be entering a program that already has a system. Teammates about his batch(so sabay silang de-develop to be potential contenders) and a strong recruiting system as well. Lastly, he'll be the "only" center/ power forward, so minutes would be guaranteed.
No offense to UP pero i think there system is still to raw(team funding and alumni support is also is a big ?) and they recruitment isn't that proven yet, but give them 3 years more or less.
If I were an athlete my first 2 choices would be DLSU or ATENEO for the things mentioned above :)

ang alam ko there is ONE school that was suspended for one year for recruiting FAKE student-athletes - kaya pala they have been successful when it comes to UAAP basketball.
palagi naman silang nag dedeny na wala silang kinalaman, and no matter how good their team can be, you would never know it dahil sa kapal ng mukha nila.
and these comments they're making about their rivals recruits were expected. check out the boards. so SOURGRAPING.
guilty. again, so predictable.
suspended? dig deeper. and maybe you'll also see how much dirtier other schools, WHO NEVER CHECKED THEIR OWN BACKYARD, are. only ONE SCHOOL lang naman always claimed purity e.
nagde-deny walang kinalaman? really? funny.
sourgraping? oh i know what you mean. well, if it makes you feel better. . .
that school was succesful in UAAP basketball by beating other schools who were supposed to be better on paper. in a lot of that schools championship seasons, that successful school wasnt necessarily favored. that school fell short last season to a superior team (ayan ha) but when they had a chance, their arrows were clipped by (_ _ _fill in the blanks_ _ _).

thank you naman. i'm pretty sure you are intelligent as well.
ako naglihis? please correct me if i'm wrong, but nowhere in my recent post which i responded to did i question the academic standards of that ONE SCHOOL. i was criticizing an attitude of purity & elitism. then ikaw ang naglihis by questioning the academic standards of the SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL. parang may fixation sa academic standards yata.
im sure here is the answer you want to hear re your question: DLSU utilized its full resources and connections to allow two mediocre players to play for them in their quest for the only thing that matters - the UAAP Men's basketball championship. It doesn't matter if it meant doing illegal things & lowering academic standards because DLSU feels that these 2 average players are THE ANSWER to bringing the champiosnhip to DLSU.
makes so much sense for those whose only objective in life is to bring the SUCCESSFUL SCHOOL down.

Former Blue Eagle co-captain Lyle Ross shared in A.net and a PM to me that eventually all the players on the '69 champion team earned their college diploma but not all from ADMU. Marty Samson earned his college degree from San Sebastian while playing for YCO. I do not know which college Joy Cleofas eventually graduated from.
Francis Arnaiz has a stateside college diploma. When Francis migrated to California, he became a civil servant for the State of California and a prerequisite of his position was a college diploma. To keep his job and advance up the career ladder, he went back to school and earned his diploma but not from a UC or Cal State school. Maybe, Sac State or a state college because he lives near Sactown.
A third "hugot" from Caloocan high school graduated from ADMU and carved out a nice career in print media. He even sent his boys to Zobel before ADMU for college. The third player from Caloocan high school was Conrado Banal, the business columnist.

Now, about your question about the two surviving several trimesters in DLSU, IMO that was only because they were being given a chance and are being tutored, but in the end our efforts proved futile. Same thing happened to Arana and he got the boot.
Also, i wouldnt call anyone stupid because you guys have your fair share of intellectually challenged ACET flunkers in your team who wouldnt last a semester at The Ateneo known for it's rigid academic standards if not given special treatment. brad, pano ba magbayad ng utang na loob? dalawa lang yan -in cash or in kind. malamang i-dedeny yan pag tinanong, as i said hush hush yan, tight group yung babangain mo. common knowledge but no one acknowledges the fact. kailangan gawin yan para mabuhay ika nga, magkano lang ba ang basic salary ng coach?, depende sa school, ganito kasi yan- example school a hires a coach for 20,000 a month, kadalasan the coach will include in the deal the salary of his assistant coaches(2-4persons usually) most get half or 1/4 of what the head coach gets, e may mga pamilya yan, yung iba dyan full time assistants, mabubuhay ba ng 5,000 a month yan? so kailangan may raket sila, which would mean any of the following- coach as many schools as your time can permit, organize basketball camps/clinics, moonlight as a player's manager, dito na pumapasok yung pag nagrecruit ka ng may potential, kontratahin mo na baka maunahan pa ng iba e, madali lang naman intindihin di ba brad?

Maybe if you took time to take a look on what happened before I posted my comments, e maiintindihan mo. Pangalawa, e mukang lahat ng sabihin ko na against o criticism against a person in the school, you take it as me being biased. Hindi naman ata ganoon yun
About Jed and Gab, pag napanood ko sila sa FMC I'll tell you my observation. Or pwede panoorin mo rin sila. :)
Btw, happy new year pala... :)
Salamat. happy new year din sayo parekoy:)

San kaya nangaling yung paninirang yun?

The eligibility problems can be easily sorted out AND it does not, in any way, damage the player's personality (unless he cheated his way in). On the other hand, pag sinabi mo naman nabibili yung tao, masyado ng personal yun and I doubt if that can be proven here in PEx.

there are so many blue chip hs players this year...tigilan nyo na si bringas...his situation just shows us how damaging to kids the recruiting wars nowadays...how winning has surpassed caring and developing kids' character...how sad.
anyway, eto mga noteworthy recruits...IEN ANDRADA, GUSI, KEVIN ALAS, MARTIN REYES OF LSGH, MIKEE REYES (who i heard sure na sa dlsu), juami tiongson and jv dumrique, ivan enriquez, marty pearce, jan auditor, adrian santos of ue, garrick ayala, and de chavez of bis.

Marty and Chris de Chavez, for me, are cinch for Team A. Juami can make a case for the PG slot but might lose out in the numbers game.
I doubt if SBC will let go of Ayala.

OT: SBC might probably get Ayala if he will agree to spend a minimum of one year as Team B player. He still needs a lot of seasoning.
Sayang lang ang one year of eligibility niya if he will be a part of Team A with no playing time at all.

The new recruits were given plenty of game exposure, however, the archers lost to the up maroons in the fr. martin cup by one point. if my memory serves me right the score was 52 - 51 in favor of up. congratulations to the maroons.

^ Sir terio, it was 56-55. Mike Silungan sank in a three-pointer with 14.4 seconds left in the game clock, giving the lead to UP. La Salle had a chance in winning the game but Hyram Bagatsing missed one of his jumpers, hence the Maroons winning it over the Archers after one very tight game.

So far the DLSU recruits I've seen playing in green are Torres, Mendoza, and Jed Manguera. Torres, though looks in cruise control, seem as good as advertised. He is mobile and plays his size. Mendoza seem destined to be a a cut in the same mold as ex Archers Ramos et. al. He looks fundamentally sound and doesn't look lost on the court. He was able to handle blind passes from LA and that says a lot. He may not look like he's gonna dominate but he's going to be steady at the very least. Manguera is another proto-typical player of Franz. He may be young but, like Mendoza, he doesn't look ill at ease inside the court. Saw him hit a 3-point **** in the middle of an STI uprising.

Jan 30, 2009, 09:46 PM
Jovet Mendoza has already played a year with the Archers. Another notable 'recruit' that has played very well in the FMC would be Gab Banal. Trained as a guard in elementary, then had to play center in high school because of his height. Now he's playing the 2/3 position. Has very high basketball IQ and can score both from the 3 point line and from the inside as well. And yes, he is the son of Coach Joel Banal, the coach that gave Ateneo there UAAP Championship in 2002.

mabait talaga si mac cardona
and even nung nasa lasalle pa nag-aaral si macmac
actually i have an old article here, 2004 pa ito at sabi ni macmac
"dapat marunong ka makisama at yung mga kaibigan mo noon ay dapat kaibigan mo pa rin at yung mga tumutulong sayo tulad ng lasalle at ni coach franz ay dapat hindi mo kinakalimutan, dahil sa kanila ay narating ko ang dapat kong marating"
in my own perception lang......
and yung mga rp youth team they really like the way coach franz handled them kaya nga karamihan sa kanila sa dlsu mag-aaral
kasama nga ang lasalle sa 500 best universities in the world

Slight correction: It was LSGH, not DLSU, that Rabeh Al-Hussaini wanted to transfer to (I guess he wanted a good education as well as an inside track to DLSU). In his third year, Rabeh, accompanied by his mother, met with the LSGH HS Principal to discuss the possibility of transferring to LSGH. After reviewing Rebeh's report cards, the Principal candidly told them that Rabeh's grades would not meet the minimum requirement and that no exception can be made. Two years later (perhaps intimidated by the stringent requirement of La Salle schools) he took the ACET instead.
