A Lot to Talk About
by Tony L. Atayde

First off, allow me to thank all those who sent me messages of condolences on the death of my mother. I was so touched that the Lasallian community showed up in full force. To all of you who went to the wake, sent me messages and prayers, I will be forever grateful.

So many things have happened since my last article, especially with La Salle. It seems that Coach Franz Pumaren is on a mission to bring back the Green Archers to a true contender. Immediately after their loss to Ateneo, Coach Franz went right back to work analyzing what went wrong and what went right.

He made sure that the rookie class of 2009 would be topnotch. He made sure that his current players would not be complacent about their spots on the team. Coach Franz is not going to lay down and give any team a championship without a good fight.

His rookies are awesome. From the Youth team he may end up getting Gab Banal (Xavier), Jed Manguerra (DLS-Zobel), Papot Paredes (Sacred Heart of Jesus in Cagayan de Oro), Joel Tolentino (UPIS), and Tata Marata (UPIS).

There is also word that Keith Algovida has applied at La Salle along with several other prized rookies. There is one blue chip rookie that also seems to have decided to play in La Salle.

Word has it that La Salle may also have a Team B this coming year. This has not happened in ages. With only JV Casio using up his eligibility, there are realistically 15 players still eligible. The latest news on Rico Maeirhofer is that he is coming back.

With all these prized rookies coming in, there will be a need to clear some slots for them. Keep in mind that these rookies have international playing experience and are not coming in cold.

The question is, will Coach Pumaren make every player earn their spot on the team? Is anyone really a shoo-in to stay on the squad? I can see Maierhofer, Mangahas, Barua, LA Revilla, Atkins, Villanueva, Ferdinand and Batricevic, Webb and Bagatsing staying on the team. That leaves 6 slots open for the rookies.

However, it is quite possible that if the UAAP Board sees the depth that La Salle will have, they may just resort back to a 14 man line-up a month before the league begins, similar to what they did this year when they increased the number of player to 16 a month before the beginning of the season.

*****************

Quinito Henson seems to have agreed with most of my suggestions regarding changes in the UAAP. In an article he recently wrote, he mentioned that the UAAP does indeed to evaluate itself. He also praised the NCAA for being a better run league.

*****************

The Chino Trinidad – Noli Eala brouhaha has not been resolved. Last I heard that Chino Trinidad allegedly made a very strong affidavit that mentions a conflict of interest on behalf of Noli Eala. Hope that a resolution is reached and the erring party either sanctioned or cleared on this matter. Sweeping it under the carpet will just make things like this very suspicious.

If the allegation of intervention in the NCAA from the office of the SBP is true, then was there also inter-vention in the other league. If it is not true, then it would only be fair to the parties concerned to clear their names.

*****************

I also heard that the PBL will no longer officiate in the NCAA because of what had happened in the Finals, The NCAA has allegedly said that there is no way that they will get NABRO. I would rather have 3 blind monkeys officiate rther than NABRO. They may just do a better job.

*****************

I heard that both Adamson and National University are holding tryouts for almost all slots on their teams. National University, which is now owned by the Sy family, is said to be leaving no stone unturned in building a contending team. Word has it that the Bulldogs are keeping Coach Manny Dandan but have Lasallian Junel Baculi and Ateneo legend Chito Afable helping rebuild the team.

Coach Leo Austria is also said to have started tryouts while keeping only a very small number of his team this year for next year. Coach Austria wants a more committed and discipline team and a coach of his caliber deserves nothing less than full commitment from his players.

It's a good thing Agovida applied at DLSU. If he gets accepted, then the competition in the UAAP will somehow be more balanced since the top NCAA Juniors players during the last 2 years went to Ateneo. However, I still wonder whether he can perform above expectations just like what Ryan Buenafe did during his rookie year. Can Aguavida, the next Bolabola, do a Boncafe in the UAAP? Your guess is as good as mine.:)

I doubt if Agovida will play for La Salle. Another blue chip rookie for La Salle? I hope he plays center. Atkins to join showbiz?

It's not just about La Salle,

it's about a lot of things like how sports analysts commended NCAA for being a better run league

or UAAP teams are still scouting players from NCAA jrs to play for UAAP srs.
