ABALOS, FABELLA Father and Son Tandem Inaugurates New JRU Gym

September 08, 2008 marked a day in history in Jose Rizal University. This was the day set for the Blessing and Inauguration of the new Jose Rizal University Gym, along Shaw Boulevard, Mandaluyong City.

Leading the ribbon cutting ceremony was the joint father-and-son tandem of Benjamin Abalos, Sr., former Comelec Chairman, his son and now Mandaluyong City Mayor Benjamin C. Abalos, Jr., Dr. Armand V. Fabella, former Department of Education Secretary and now JRU Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Dr. Vincent K. Fabella, JRU President. Mandaluyong City Congressman Neptali M. Gonzales II become indisposed and was not able to attend the event.

PBA Legends who were once Lords of the basketball court in then Jose Rizal College (JRC) who also attended the event were Philip Cezar, Manny Victorino, and Vergel Meneses.

The Mandaluyong Mayor was accompanied by his Vice Mayor Rene Sta. Maria, city councilors, city administrator, city treasurer and budget officer. Mr. Renz Evangelista, SK Chairman and Councilor of Mandaluyong, is first year college student in JRU.

The newly blessed and inaugurated gym, a six-storey high state-of-the-art facility in Mandaluyong, has a total floor area of 6,620 square meters, including the gym itself, parking area and multipurpose rooms and classrooms. The parking area has 45 parking slots, adjacent to the Engineering and Maintenance, Janitorial and Security offices of the University. The second floor contains telescopic bleachers and two basketball courts where one could be converted into a professional court for practices and NCAA games of the JRU Heavy and Light Bomber Squads. For specific functions, demountable stage and benches may also be set up in the gym. Also on the second floor are athletes’ weights rooms, varsity lockers, comfort rooms and storage disbursement areas.

The third floor was developed to accommodate the Athletics Office, a multi-purpose room, male & female comfort rooms, conference rooms, coaches’ room and athletic staff working area. This area was designed primarily for the activities of the athletics office.

The fourth and fifth floors were built to accommodate classes and student activities, while the sixth floor has a multipurpose function hall that can be used either as classrooms or a big conference room. Another big room at the same floor is converted exclusively for JRU’s affiliate review center.

The façade of the building is designed to reflect not only the University’s commitment to the development of JRU students but also serves as an ICON to the City of Mandaluyong as a whole.

MANILA, Philippines – Ian Mazo and Allan Mangahas of the Mapua Cardinals left the Philippine Basketball League Aspirants’ Camp to rave reviews Saturday at the Jose Rizal University Gym in Mandaluyong City.

Coaches and team representatives were impressed with Mazo’s speed, shooting and defense and Mangahas’ leadership qualities and also his shooting in the five-hour camp supervised by former professionals Joey Guanio and Benjie Paras.

Some 216 names showed up at the JRU Gym where PBL clubs could look into the talent available in the Rookie Draft set on September 30 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Among the foreign-based Filipinos, US-raised Chris Ross was singled out as the “steadiest player".

"He's not fancy but I'm sure he can get the job done," Guanio said.

Pharex owns the No. 1 pick in the drafting followed by Toyota Otis, Magnolia, Burger King, Hapee Toothpaste, Harbour Centre and Bacchus Energy Drink. – GMANews.TV

September 8, 2008 is also a special day for the SSC-R Staglets not only because it was Mama Mary's birthday but also the day when the Staglets made a season sweep of the NCAA Juniors Basketball Division with a 97-88 win over the JRU Light Bombers in overtime. The LSGH Greenies eliminated the SBC Red Cubs on the same day to mark the first time since 1977 that the Red Cubs failed to make it to the top 4 in the Juniors Division. That's 3 days after NCAA Juniors MVP Keith Agovida of the Light Bombers scored 82 points in a 127-49 massacre of the MHSS Red Robins.

Search for top-tier RP lady cagers on in WPBL tryouts

MANILA, Philippines – Organizers of the Women Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) will hold an open tryout on Sunday at the Jose Rizal University gym in Mandaluyong City.

“We expect the alumni of various schools to join the tryout. Some of our regular teams are now busy scouting for players for their respective teams," said PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad.

“By playing in the tournament, we hope ex-RP team members can inspire the young ones to take up the sport seriously," added PBL chairman Mikee Romero.

The league also set an age limit of 28 years old for lady cagers who aspire to play in the coming WPBL season that is set to open on November 8 at the Ynares Sports Center in Pasig City.

“We want to have the best available players around so we have to set a new age limit. Besides, this is our first time in so many years to hold this kind of tournament," said Romero.

Romero said the WPBL’s revival will be a big challenge to them but added that is optimistic. “This is for the national interest and for the women’s cause and we’re doing it to give former college players the opportunity to play and have fun."

Trinidad added they plan to “involve other companies and allow their players to join the league."

PBL members that will field teams in the women’s league are Hapee Toothpaste, Toyota Otis, Magnolia Purewater, Burger King, Pharex and Bacchus Energy Drink.

Smart Sports of sports patron Manny V. Pangilinan, Ever Bilena of former PBL chairman Dioseldo Sy and Muscle Tape of former PBA coach Chito Narvasa have also expressed interest to join the tournament along with the RP Youth and Women’s teams. – GMANews.TV

Do you want me to change the title topic to complement your flair for posting newsclips? I suggest you limit your scope in posting newsclips. We might be mistakened for the Hoops Nation forum or the other basketball forums. ;)
