NCAA to announce new team before year ends
10/16/2008 | 06:21 PM
MANILA, Philippines – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will announce its new member school before the year ends, the league management committee said Thursday.
According to ManCom chairman Ding Lozano of Mapua, the announcement will be made on December 16.
Emilio Aguinaldo College, Centro Escolar University, Angeles Foundation University, Arellano University and Lyceum of the Philippines are the top candidates to crack the eight-league team and take up the spot left vacant by Philippine Christian University which will take a leave of absence.
Technological University of the Philippines and Don Bosco Mandaluyong are also knocking on the league's door but they have yet to send a letter of intent.
The five schools will have to comply with the requirements which include having a high-school varsity program, participation in all sports events calendared in the NCAA, undergoing a three-year probationary period and the payment of a P5-million membership fee.
Lozano added that the expansion may not stop this year.
"By 2009, we may add two more schools bringing to 10 our members for the 85th NCAA season," Lozano said.
The league's youngest teams are PCU, which joined in 1996, and College of Saint Benilde, which entered the tournament in 1998. - GMANews.TV

If Arellano U gets accepted, then JRU might just welcome its real worthy rival. It's like matching up a school named after a hero affectionately known as the "first Filipino" (JRU) and one after the first Philippine Chief Justice (Arellano U). If both Arellano U and EAC gets accepted, then they might as well be considered as rivals for they are schools which were named after the first Philippine Chief Justice (Arellano U) and the first Philippine President (EAC). Mapua may also join in the rivalry as the school was named after the first Filipino architect (Tomas Mapua). Aside from being named after "first Filipinos", Mapua and JRU are the only NCAA schools which were named after Filipinos or persons who are not saints. Arellano U and EAC may just increase the number of NCAA schools named after "first Filipinos" and persons who are not saints if both teams get accepted next year. I'll still go for Trinity University of Asia's return to the NCAA.

i'm not sure if these schools have high school teams. anyways, they can always syndicate a sister high school (if any) to go with them.
My order of preference..
*Centro Escolar University (due to School Population, may help improve NCAA's popularity)
*Emilio Aguinaldo College (Good Basketball Programme)
*Lyceum of the Philippines
*Arellano University (I think, di ganun karami ang population sa college.. sa high school yata talagang marami)
*Angeles Foundation University (Geographical Reasons)
I wonder anong mga criteria ang bubuuin ng NCAA Board..

EAC has a red and white uniform which is almost similar to the hues of San Beda's uniform. After all, the school's named after a revolutionary and their monicker is the Generals. Arellano U's monicker is the Chiefs and the Bedans have a Chief Indian with his 10 or sometimes 9, little fat Indian boys.

My mga choices pala.
CEU - it's about time na rin. for me i think they will be the prime candidate panis ang 5m sa may-ari ng ceu, kahit doblehen pa yan. but they must strengthen their sports program. alam naman natin na di sila ganun ka competative sa liga nila.

The CEU Scorpions have experienced a couple of runner-up finishes during UM's domination of the NAASCU from 2001-2005. I wonder if they will chant "Beda Tulo Laway" vs San Beda when the NCAA welcomes them. As for the PUP Stars, their sports program ranges from mediocre to average these days especially in basketball.

Regarding the uniform color, we can shift to purple, being the color of the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Cayetano Arellano, our school's namesake, is the first chief justice of the Philippines.
Our population is more than 40,000.
We have a good basketball program = Back to back NCRAA champion last 2007 and 2008 and Fr. Martin's Cup Summer League Champions.
We are really hoping that we will be accepted.
Hail to the Chief! Hail Arellano University!

NCAA eyes roster of 10 teams in 2010
By June Navarro
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 05:59:00 10/17/2008
MANILA, Philippines—Two seasons from now, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will have 10 member schools under its wings.
In a marathon six-hour board meeting Thursday, the 84-year-old sports institution agreed to lay down the groundwork for the entry of two more schools in 2010.
The NCAA board officially accepted applications from Emilio Aguinaldo College, Arellano University, Centro Escolar University, Angeles University Foundation and Lyceum of the Philippines University besides getting feelers from Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong and Technological Institute of the Philippines.
NCAA management committee (Mancom) chair Ding Lozano of host Mapua Institute of Technology said the league will pick from among these aspirants the school that will take the slot to be vacated by Philippine Christian University next year.
By 2010, two more schools from the pool of aspirants will be added to the roster, Lozano said.
The PCU Dolphins will take an indefinite leave of absence next season as part of the condition for the school’s reinstatement this year following a suspension slapped by the NCAA for fielding several ineligible players in 2006.
Lozano said PCU will also have to apply along with the other aspiring schools to rejoin the league in 2010 after serving a two-year suspension.
“The target is to maintain the membership of eight schools next year and increase the number by 2010,” said Lozano.
“We will start setting up the criteria for these applicants as soon as practical.”
A reliable source within the NCAA policy board revealed that an applicant needs to cough up P5 million as entry fee.
Once accepted, the school must also participate in the 10 sports calendared by the NCAA for the next three years with entries in the high school and collegiate levels.
Besides basketball, NCAA also holds competition in track and field, beach volleyball, chess, swimming, volleyball, taekwondo, lawn tennis, table tennis and football.
Meanwhile, the joint NCAA policy board and Mancom will still ask Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala to explain in writing the circumstances surrounding the aborted pullout of referees in the recent NCAA Finals.

E Aguinaldo College, Lyceum top choices as 8th NCAA member
GMANews.TV
October 29, 2008
One school known for its men's basketball varsity and another with a more balanced set of sports programs are leading the race for a slot in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
NCAA management committee chairman Ding Lozano said Emilio Aguinaldo College and Lyceum of the Philippines have shown "the most interest" among five schools which have applied to become the eighth member of the league.
EAC, the Ermita-based school that specializes on medical sciences, has one of the strongest cage teams outside the UAAP and the NCAA.
Lyceum, the Intramuros-based college known for its liberal arts program, boasts one of the most formidable women's varsitiy clubs.
Centro Escolar University, Arellano University and Angeles University Foundation are the other schools that have applied.
"We're now in the process of evaluating the schools that applied to us formally, including personally visiting their campuses," Lozano said in the weekly Philippine Sportswriters' Association forum Tuesday at Shakey's UN Avenue.
Lozano's committee will trim down the list to three on December 15, make re-evaluations and announce the new member before the year ends.
The school needs to comply with three requirements, including: paying a P5-million entry fee, accepting a three-year probationary period and participating in all calendar events in the senior, juniors and women's divisions.

Top candidates:
*Emilio Aguinaldo College
*Centro Escolar University
*Angeles Foundation University
*Arellano University
*Lyceum of the Philippines

NCAA prunes down choices to 3
By Peter Atencio
Manila Standard
THE choice for a new National Collegiate Athletic Association member has been narrowed down to three.
A source said the management committee of the NCAA has pared down the candidates from among Emilio Aguinaldo College, Lyceum of the Philippines and Arellano University.
The school, which will be picked, will immediately join the 85th season, replacing Philippine Christian University, which took an indefinite leave of absence.
Arellano U, Lyceum and EAC made it to the final list from five candidates.
A decision on which of the three will be accepted was supposed to have been made last month by the NCAA policy board, but the management committee deferred from making its recommendation until this month.
The mancom said it delayed making a recommendation, because it still needs to clarify some questions with regards to the high school programs of the three schools.
Those who did not make it to the Final Three were Centro Escolar University and Angeles University Foundation.
After one of the three schools will be chosen for the current season, the league will then conduct more screenings for two more new members for 2010.
The nominees were pared down to only three after an evaluation committee made the rounds of the five schools to determine if they have suitable venues to hold NCAA events.
The successful applicant still needs to comply with the three major requirements, which includes the payment of a P5-million entry fee, a three-year probationary period and participation in all events of the NCAA calendar in the senior, junior and women’s divisions.

NCAA nears decision on PCU replacement
By Jonas Terrado
January 15, 2009
Manila Bulletin
The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is set to make final evaluation on the three schools applying for membership to replace Philippine Christian University next season.
NCAA spokesman Henry Atayde said that they ask officials of Arellano University, Emilio Aguinaldo College and Lyceum of the Philippines some clarification on certain matters on Jan. 22 before making a decision.
"We want some clarification regarding organizational matters," said Atayde.
Atayde, who is the Management Committee (MANCOM) representative of College of Saint Benilde, added that they were supposed to meet with them today, but decided to defer it for next week after some applicants failed to make a quick response on an invitation sent by the league during the Christmas break.
"Nagsulat kami sa mga schools na gustong mag-apply but some of them could not make a response so we decided to schedule it on the 22nd," Atayde added.
Arellano, EAC and Lyceum are the three remaining candidates for PCU’s spot from an initial list of five. The winning school is required to pay a fee of P5 million besides committing to play in all 10 events next season.
Aside from basketball and track and field, the two mandatory sports for current members, the league also holds championships in football, volleyball, chess, taekwondo, lawn tennis, table tennis, swimming and beach volleyball.
PCU is set to take an indefinite leave of absence starting next season, two years after they were suspended for fielding ineligible players from its high school basketball squad.
Should PCU decide to return, it must undergo the same process application like Arellano, EAC and Lyceum.

First of two new NCAA member schools known by months end
01/22/2009 | 09:43 PM
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/145494/First-of-two-new-NCAA-member-schools-known-by-months-end
MANILA, Philippines – One of the four applicant schools in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is expected to be formally accepted before the end of the month.
Any among Emilio Aguinaldo College, Lyceum of the Philippines, Arellano University and Angeles University Foundation will be granted participation by the oldest collegiate event in the country. All four schools applied to become regular members of the league.
AUF was the latest to be included following the junking of Centro Escolar University’s application by the NCAA management committee earlier.
With Philippine Christian University taking a leave of absence, the NCAA can accommodate one among the four applicants. Two more schools will most likely be accepted next season but they need to go through more rigid screening.
Over the previous months, an evaluation committee made their rounds on the five school to find out if they have the facilities to hold events of the NCAA. The plan was to split competitions into two divisions once their application will be granted.
A school which will be accepted has to comply with the league’s requirements that include a P5 million entry fee, a three-year probationary period and participation in all of calendared events for the senior, junior and women’s divisions. – GMANews.TV

NCAA defers decision on new member
By Joey Villar Updated January 27, 2009 12:00 AM
The NCAA Policy Board yesterday remained undecided as to which among the four applicants it would accept as its newest member this season.
The board, led by Dr. Reynaldo Vea of Mapua, failed to come up with the required two-thirds vote and defer from making a decision on the issue.
All board members, consisting of school heads and presidents, attended the meeting including Season 83 host San Beda rector Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB.
“The board deferred from making any decision for further discussions,” said Vea in a statement.
Sources said the top vote getters were back-to-back National Capital Region Athletic Association Arellano University and Emilio Aguinaldo College but the two failed to muster the needed six votes to make it in.
Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga and Lyceum are the other two applicants while a fifth applicant-Centro Escolar University-did not make it because of incomplete requirement.
One STAR source said the board will meet and try to resolve the issue next week, or hopefully before the end of the season.
“One thing is certain, the league will come up with a decision before the season concludes on Feb. 28,” said Management Committee member Henry Atayde of St. Benilde.

NCAA to retain 7-team cage roster
By Joey Villar Updated February 04, 2009 12:00 AM
Philstar
The National Collegiate Athletic Association Policy Board has decided to retain the seven-team composition for this year’s Season 85.
This after the board, chaired by Dr. Reynaldo Vea of Mapua, failed to come up with the two-thirds vote for a school to make it to this season’s roster.
“By NCAA rules, none of the four applicants (Arellano University, Lyceum, Angeles University and Emilio Aguinaldo College) can be admitted to the NCAA next season (85th Season) because none got the necessary number of votes,” said Vea in a statement.
“The policy board unanimously agreed to hold the status quo of seven NCAA members for the next season without prejudice to their application for their admission in Season 86,” he added.
Management Committee chair Fernando Lozano, also of Mapua, however, said applicants, including Philippine Christian U, which took an indefinite leave of absence last year, may reapply next year.
“We can wait for next year. I just hope the NCAA can give us a chance to prove we deserve to be in the league. The student population, the officials, the athletes and alumni are all excited to make it to the NCAA,” said Val Cayco, Arellano’s marketing chief and the man at the helm of the school’s athletic program.
The earlier plan was to accept one school this year to fill the eighth spot vacated by the Dolphins and expand to 10 teams next season.
This marks the second time that the NCAA will have a seven-team cage roster since PCU was suspended two years ago due to eligibility issues.

two schools one from manila and one in the south had problems with their nursing programs... one school in manila was inspected for its low standard laboratories....

The more, the merrier for NCAA
THE National Collegiate Athletic Association is eyeing to have an eight-team lineup when the 85th season of the league opens on June 27 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Newly appointed NCAA president Fr. Mat de Jesus, OSB, of host San Beda hinted about the possible entry of a new member school during the formal turnover rites of the league’s hosting chores to the Mendiola-based institution at the Casa Espanol in Manila.
“I would say it’s a future possibility, hopefully within the next few days we can also share with you what the NCAA can look forward to,” said de Jesus.
The San Beda rector received the league’s official flag from Season 84 host Dr. Reynaldo Vea of Mapua.
The policy board meeting chaired by de Jesus is expected to choose among four applicants in Arellano University, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Lyceum and Angeles University Foundation, at the most, by Friday.
The eight spot was vacated by Philippine Christian U, which took an indefinite leave of absence this year for fielding in ineligible players two seasons ago.
Just recently, the league decided to stick with a seven-school roster for the coming 2009-2010 season after it failed to come up with the needed two-thirds vote to accept a new member.
It appears the league had a change of heart.
“With seven, less people, less fans, less students. More schools means we have more students, more fans and people involved,” said de Jesus.
First things first, de Jesus said the host school is bent on making Season 85 a smashing success.
“It’s a tall order for me, probably a hard act to follow. I feel honored, I feel so small in this moment carrying the banner of the NCAA,” said de Jesus.

NCAA still open to 8th school for new season
By Cedelf P. Tupas

MANILA, Philippines—Two months after rejecting the applications of four schools, the NCAA Tuesday opted not to rule out the possibility of accepting another member in the coming season, when San Beda College hosts the country’s oldest collegiate league.
The NCAA has been reduced to a seven-school cast for the 85th season beginning in June after Philippine Christian University filed a leave of absence from the league in the wake of the eligibility scandal involving its high school basketball team in 2006.
“As far as the last decision of the policy board, we will have seven schools,” said NCAA president Fr. Mat De Jesus of San Beda on Tuesday following the turnover of the hosting rights from Mapua Institute of Technology.
“But we are very open to future possibilities. It’s premature to announce it (now) and I would rather reserve comment because we still have technical concerns,” added De Jesus.
A source privy to the discussions said the policy board will meet again on Friday to discuss whether or not the NCAA will take in another member.
It already junked the bids of Emilio Aguinaldo College, Arellano University, Lyceum of the Philippines and Angeles University Foundation early this year. The four schools failed to get the two-thirds vote required to enter the NCAA.
“There will be (fewer) people, (fewer) fans watching, but also member-schools with more fans and more people involved. But these are only the numbers,” said De Jesus.
“The NCAA has matured over the years. If there are schools invited to join the league, it should catch up with the maturity of the league.”
He said the NCAA will also discuss the possibility of including boxing, fencing, archery and air rifle as demonstration sports in the new season.
The league will also implement the two-year residency requirement for foreign athletes to be allowed to see action in the league, he said.
