It will be nice if the Ateneo-San Beda games will be held in another closed-door match to relive the spirit of the 1977 NCAA Finals. However, it should be televised so that fans and alumni of both schools will be able to watch the "solemn and peaceful" game.

Eagles, Lions to rekindle cage rivalry
By Joaquin Henson
Friday, October 17, 2008
It was 30 years ago when Ateneo and San Beda played behind closed doors to decide the NCAA senior men’s basketball championship in a game that fans never saw. Today, the Blue Eagles and Red Lions are champions in different leagues but as the saying goes, there can only be one.
On Nov. 23, a group made up of Smart Sports, ABS-CBN Sports, SBP and alumni from both schools is bringing to reality “the game you never saw” and “the game you want to see” in a doubleheader at the PhilSports Arena.
The first contest will feature a reprise of the 1977 NCAA finals and the second, a showdown between this year’s NCAA and UAAP champions.
Patrick Gregorio of Smart Sports said varsity cagers from 1975 to 1980 will comprise the San Beda and Ateneo squads in the opener while this season’s players will see action in the main event.
In 1977, Ateneo and San Beda figured in a best-of-3 series for the NCAA crown. The Eagles drew first blood, 105-99, as Steve Watson fired 47 points. The Lions prevailed, 71-68, in Game 2 that was marred by fan violence. To avoid an escalation of emotions, the NCAA ruled that Game 3 would be played behind closed doors with no fans in the stands. San Beda won, 77-75.
The Lions’ winning coach was Bonnie Carbonnel and his mainstays included Chito Loyzaga, Chuck Barreiro, Jayvee Yango, Louie Brill, Cholo Martin, Frankie Lim and Joel and Noel Guzman. Ateneo was coached by Baby Dalupan and the Eagles included Watson, Joy Carpio, Fritz Gaston, Louie Rabat, Ogie Narvasa, Bambi Kabigting, Maling Estrella and Eu Puyat.
San Beda’s Abe King turned pro the year the Lions won the championship but was invited to reinforce the team in the revival game.
King, who lives in the US, underwent back surgery three months ago but confirmed he’ll be ready to play.
“I will try to do some jogging now so I can at least run up and down the court three times,” he said. “It might turn out to be a comedy. But I’ll be ready to help for a good cause. Count me in.”
King is arriving in Manila next week to attend the PBA Legends USA Foundation’s medical mission on Oct. 25 in Antipolo and Oct. 26 in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija.
Gregorio said he is arranging for Pong Escobal, who now plays for Talk ‘N’ Text in the PBA, to suit up for the Red Lions as the 6-1 guard was a vital cog in this year’s NCAA title team.
“This won’t be your usual exhibition because the rivalry is still strong,” said Gregorio. “Both schools are out to win. Fans never saw Game 3 of the 1977 finals. Now, after 30 years, we’ll witness what we never saw. As for this year’s champions, this will settle the issue of not only which team is superior but also which league – the UAAP or the NCAA.”
Gregorio said the doubleheader will raise funds for the projects of SBP and the PLDT-Smart Foundation to benefit athletes.
A highlight of the main event is the duel in the middle between Ateneo’s Rabah Al-Hussaini and San Beda’s Sam Ekwe. Other matchups to watch are Ryan Buenafe versus Ogie Menor, Nonoy Baclao versus Jake Pascual, Chris Tiu versus Escobal and Jai Reyes versus Borgie Hermida.
Gaston said he’s looking forward to the revival game.
“It’s an excellent preliminary to the game between the current champs,” said Gaston. “This match has a very rich history, not to mention animosity and fierce rivalry. Ateneo was going for a three-peat and San Beda was out to win after losing the year before. This was Ateneo’s last year in the NCAA. San Beda wanted to spoil our going away party. It was the first closed door championship game ever.”
Gaston said despite the age factor, the 1977 Ateneo team should be competitive.
“Barring scars from PBA days, Steve, Joy, Padim and I should be able to play,” continued Gaston. “We’re slower but the skills should still be there. San Beda will have Frankie, Mike (Advani), Chito, Abe and Jayvee.”
Gregorio said the twinbill is the realization of an impossible dream.
Suggested ticket prices will likely range from P500 for patron seats and P100 for the bleachers. The seating capacity at the PhilSports Arena is 8,900.
Gregorio said he is coordinating with Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) chairman Rey Gamboa to avoid conflict in schedule. The PCCL opens hostilities on Nov. 24 with neither San Beda nor Ateneo playing.
San Beda president Fr. Matt de Jesus has pledged his all-out support for the project, said Gregorio. The organizing committee is composed of Gregorio, Art Aro, Anton Almeda of Smart Sports, Jojo Garcia and Jenny Jimenez of ABS-CBN Sports, SBP executive director Noli Eala, Gaston, coach Bong Go, King, Lim and Loyzaga.
The commissioner for the event is Bernie Atienza with Perry Martinez as head of the technical committee. Advisers are PLDT chairman Manny Pangilinan, Fr. de Jesus and Ateneo’s Ricky Palou.

Maging humble na lang tayong mga Bedista because it's downright immature to slam it further down their throats. Our silence and humility should prevail.

The Ateneo-San Beda rivalry is hotter than the Ateneo-La Salle one. A televised closed-door match will really make the 2008 match between the Red Lions and the Blue Eagles more nostalgic and solemn.

Hey, are you the same James Ty III of Scoreboard/Scorecard? I have some questions. Who were the NCAA MVPs of the ff. year: 1990, 1992, 1994, and 1995? Also, is Aramis Calpito part of the 1993 SSC-R champion team? How about Brixter Encarnacion and Jasper Ocampo? As for the MVPs, I won't refer to En wiki as it has been unreliable these days.

It would still count as 1978, for simplicity's sake, at the basketball seasons usually start in late June or mid-July.

Anybody know who SBC's rookies were in 77?
I remember watching the 1st 2 games as a really young kid. I thought initially the ADMU line up was much stronger coz they were gunning for a 3-peat and coz I heard Steve Watson was a HS kid (initially) promoted to the MBT.
On hind sight and seeing the players' careers in the PBA though, I think it was really just Baby D all along that made them strong.

I would say the triumvirate of JV Yango, Chito Loyzaga and the young Frankie Lim and maybe Elmer Reyes... basing it from the group picture above.
Lim and Reyes played thru till 1980-8I season making it 4 seasons in all. Loyzaga and Yango didn't play out their remaining eligibility when they(Yango) opted to turn pro.
That Blue Eagle squad was indeed a powerhouse team with carryovers from their 2 previous championships consisting of high flying eagles Steve Watson, Fritz Gaston, Carpio, Israel in the line-up.
The Red Lions were just hungrier and their younger players were now starting to gel very well.
The final game 3 result could have gone either way. Check out the score: only a basket separates the 2 teams!

The Philipines hosted the 8th FIBA Men's World Basketball Championships from October 1-14 in 1978. Yugoslavia was led by tournament MVP Drazen Dalipagic, Dragan Kicanovic and Zoran Slavnic, and won over the Soviet Union, led by Sergei Belov and 7'4" man-mountain Vladimir Tkatchengko. Brazil copped third place by beating Italy on a last second heave by Marcel de Souza. Future Hall of Famer Dino Meneghin of Italy chased the referee who counted de Souza's shot, threatening to kill him.:rotflmao:
The Philippines, as host, was automatically seeded 8th in the semifinals, and expectedly, finished last and winless. Ateneo was represented by stalwarts Steve Watson, Joy Carpio and Padim Israel. Watson's moment of glory was in their match vs Yugoslavia where the Philippines lost "only" by 20 pts. Watson shot 20 points, following the lead of teammate Mon Cruz who shot 29 pts, IIRC.
The Philippines also hosted the 5th Asian Youth Tournament. That team was led by Jayvee Yango, Chito Loyzaga, La Salle center Jay Lucido and MIT's Joel Banal who represented the NCAA. Up to that point, the Philippines remained undefeated in this tournament since 1970.

The rookies in that 1977 team were: 5'8" guard Ramon "Cholo" Martin, 5'11 guard Luis Brill, 6'0" forwards Al "Ali" Alipante, John Lizaso, Jun De Jesus, and the most important one for the Lions that year, 6'3" center Jose "JV" Yango.

Oct 20, 2008, 09:16 AM
Check out the score: only a basket separates the 2 teams!
renestrauss, that picture showed the 1978 defending champion Red Lions. The rookies then were 6'1" forward Elmer Reyes, 6'3" center Rolando Evangelista, former Red Cubs 6'1" guard Gabby Lim and 6'2" center Albert Bregendahl, and guard Manuel Mañosa.
Frankie Lim and Chito Loyzaga were rookies on the 1976 team which included Abe King. Chito left after the 1978 season while Lim played out his eligibility a year later in 1979.
The Blue Eagles team in the photo was the 1975 team which garnered the championship that year, the first of two straight.

Chito Loyzaga and Joey Loyzaga were from Ateneo Grade school. They moved to Beda HS, then pursued college in Beda. Spotted Chito Loyzaga with Fr. Nebres one time in a game of Ateneo. Alumnus naman siya ng grade school so that's why he was watching I guess.

Roar or Soar? Who’s the best Collegiate team this year?
October 9, 2008 by Chrisangelo
I really hate to do this mainly because of..
1) They are from two different leagues so comparing these teams would really be pointless. They could meet at Champions cup but.. I don’t think both teams will play with a complete line up in this year’s Champion’s Cup.
2) I’m 100% certain that I’m going to take heat from the red or blue guys after writing this entry and since I’m a peace loving guy, I don’t want that. lol
But since I have nothing else to do and I already told a reader that I’ll do it, fine. I’ll break it down, take my pick in a 3 game series and justify my claim. Alright let’s begin..
Ateneo just finished a dominating UAAP run, taking all but a single game against FEU, taking out UE in the Semis and then sweeping their rival La Salle in the Finals. While on the other hand, San Beda came off a tough NCAA season losing games to JRU, Mapua and even CSB (Technically). San Beda took out Mapua in the Semi Finals and then dispatched a tough tough JRU team in 3 games to complete a grand slam.
Now, looking at the way they ended their campaign.. it’s easy to assume that Ateneo would take out San Beda easily. But come on, you guys have to admit, San Beda had a tougher run to the title and as much as I’m afraid to say it, most of the UAAP teams are a tad overrated this year.
With that being said, lemme try to breakdown this “fantasy” match up between Ateneo and San Beda.
Frontline
Ateneo possesses two of the best bigmen in the UAAP today on their starting line up. Rabeh Al Husseini (2008 MVP) and Severino “Nonoy” Baclao (2008 Finals MVP, 2007 Champions Cup MVP) while on the other side of the fence, Beda plays with Sam Ekwe (2 time NCAA MVP) and JR Taganas to start for them. Justin Chua and Jobe Idon’tknowhowtospellhissurname mans up the Ateneo bench while Jake Pascual and Dave Marcelo does the substitute role for the Lions.
Frontline breakdown: Rabeh won’t be as effective and as dominating as he was in the UAAP because he’ll be hounded by four different defenders, specifically Sam Ekwe and JR Taganas. Now, this would most definitely be in favor of the Lions considering that their offense doesn’t rely heavily on Ekwe and Taganas while the Eagles almost instantly goes to Rabeh every single time they set up. I expect Ateneo’s frontline to produce more points but I’ll have to give the frontline advantage to San Beda because of what I’ve said above.
Wingmen
On the blue side: Chris Tiu, Eric Salamat and Ryan Buenafe. In the red corner: Ogie Menor, Bambam Gamalinda and JR Tecson.
Wingmen Breakdown: Ateneo has better wingmen. Hands down. Chris Tiu, Ryan Buenafe and Eric Salamat can explode any given Sunday on the other hand, Beda’s wings are at times inconsistent. Ogie’s game can either help his team big time or pull it down in the Abyss. Tecson and Gamalinda are solid players, but like what I’ve said, they’re inconsistent. Wing advantage goes to Ateneo.
Backcourt Breakdown
The Hermida-Escobal-Tirona backcourt is prolly the most underrated backcourt in Collegiate Basketball today. All of those guys are solid point guards which can shift to the two guard spot easily. On the other hand, I think Ateneo’s soft spot is in their backcourt. Jai Reyes, Yuri Escueta and Kirk Long doesn’t really match up well to the experienced trio of Beda. Backcourt advantage easily goes to San Beda here.
The Verdict
I know I’m going to recieve (as usual) hate mails for saying this, but I’m actually picking San Beda to win against Ateneo in three tough tough games. It’s really hard for me to pick between two great teams but I feel San Beda is still, the best Collegiate basketball team today, as it was in the past three years.
Anyway, I’m all done now. You can send your hate mails after the tone. :D
just wanna share this, saw this article weeks ago at hoops.blink.ph i know the "analysis" isn't that great but what can you guys say?

I don't think that they will outnumber the Bedans if ever. Both of the schools have lesser student population compared to DLSU. I think ADMU's overall population is just around 4,000 - 8,000. Plus, you are not putting the alumni in your count. Both schools have so many alumni who will support the two teams.

Plans to stage an Ateneo-San Beda doubleheader featuring players of yesteryears in the opener and a showdown between the NCAA champion and UAAP titlist in the climax at the PhilSports Arena on Nov. 23 were shelved because of conflicting schedules.
Smart Sports’ Patrick Gregorio, however, said it’s only a postponement, not a cancellation – he hopes.
Eagles and Lions from the ’70s had agreed to square off in what was to be a revival of the closed-door battle for the NCAA championship in 1977. Abe King and Fritz Gaston vowed to show up ready to play.
San Beda president Matt de Jesus pledged his all-support to the fund-raiser but Ateneo officials begged off in the end.

If they have another game that time, it's easy to re-schedule this ONE GAME. But like I said, somebody eagled-out of the game.... hehehe.
I think they only not eagled-out on our Red Lions, but also on our Bedan fans.. di hamak na mas solid tayo eh!
ANIMO SAN BEDA.
eagled out? perhaps, but its not because they're afraid of your basketball team, more of their fans afraid to rub elbows with yours. ayaw nilang ma-associate sa inyo eh much less to be mentioned in the same sentence. lasalle or beda for a rival? kailangan pa ba pag-isipan iyan? its like comparing the waldorf to the manila hotel.

Mod, I second the motion. This thread has served its purpose. Until that game happens, this thread will just be an outlet for obnoxious morons to waste so much time over nothing.
