MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO!!!! :D
There are reputedly 42 colors in the original work as opposed to Disney cartoons which has only 15-20 colors. And Miyazaki San has in one time or another been called the Walt Disney of Japan. Do you guys agree on this thought?

Try and check out the Movies and TV (http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/forumdisplay.php3?forumid=5) forum, use the search (http://www.pinoyexchange.com/forums/search.php3) function and look for "Princess mononoke", "Warriors of the Wind" a.k.a. "Nausicaa" or "laputa", and you'll be sure to find more fans of Miyazaki. You could even search for "Miyazaki", to take you directly to fellow fans of his work.;)

ako rin. super gusto ko si hayao miyazaki. i am actually waiting for the release of kiki's delivery service. i have seen princess mononoke and i'd love to see it again. it's too bad they didn't release it in the theaters.
i have also seen nausicaa but i'd like to have my own personal copy of it. do you guys know where i can get one?
i also liked whispers of the heart although hindi siya technically hayao miyazaki but studio ghibli naman so pwede na yun.

Hi Kartoonista! I have seen "Grave of the Fireflies" and I have to say that it is one of the most thought-provoking, gut-wrenching and heart-breaking anime i have seen. Maganda sya. Although, I dont know if you like drama. Heavy drama kse talaga sya. Pero, ibang klase. You should watch it!
Hi Pinktikbalang! You want a copy of Nausicaa... do you buy pirated tapes(VHS)? kse all the copies of this movie eh pirated lang since nde pa niri-release ng Disney ang Nausicaa since they bought the rights. Meron akong nabili sa Greenhills, sa Virra Mall, 3rd floor. it isnt a very good copy of Nausicaa but its ok. Dont buy that Nausicaa na edited from a Hollywood Company ha. daming parts na inedit. they also sell other Miyazaki movies there like Kiki's Delivery and Laputa. They dont have Whispers of the Heart and Porco Rosso. I still have to look for copies pa nito. Yung mga sinabi kong available movies, yung Kiki's Delivery lang ang english-dubbed. the rest, english subtitled.

Grave of The Fireflies is definitely one of his best, as well as Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.
I was hoping they whould release Disney's version of Mononoke Hime on the big screen, but Disney marketed the movie so badly, so maybe I'll wait for the DVD release.

Porco Rosso is that the "Crimson Pig"? Only saw it in bits... Anybody have a good copy? We only have a Japanese version of Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service and the American release of My Neighbor Totoro. I could really watch his anime over and over again paying much attention to the details in every scene.

kartoonista, yup, thats the one! Wala pang release non eh. I think sa Japan ka lang talaga makakahanap muna non for now. I've been looking all over for that too pero no such luck. may mga friends din akong nagko-collect ng anime and binabalitaan lang din nila ako.
as for kiki's delivery, i have a english-dubbed tape (VHS) of it. ok naman kahit papaano yung dubbing nya. yung mononokehime naman eh meron ng release ang disney na english-dubbed although nde pa pang public release. a VHS (original coppy) is worth $104-106. Dollars yan ha, take note! ganon sya kamahal. you could buy pirated tapes of it though if you are really desperate to buy it. they also have VCD copies of it pero search ka ng husto kse merong nagte-take advantage ng kahirapang ng paghanap ng copy na yon. i saw once na a copy of it in VCD form (pirated) is worth PhP700! Sobra, grabe yon!
yung laputa naman, i wrote disney when they will release it kse don sa tape ko ng kiki's delivery naka-advertise na iri-release daw nila nung 1999 pero walang lumabas. nde pa rin daw sure ang disney when they'll release it. so, i guess we really have to wait pa. as for nausicaa din, mukhang 2004-2005 pa yata release nila kung ganon sila katagal mag-release ng english-dubbed copies nila. haaayyyy....

i just watched Mononoke Hime and i was very, very impressed!!! it was really great!!! i kept on asking myself why was it only now i discovered Miyazaki. the story did not depict of "perfect" heroes and gave every sense of reality there is, that there lies good and evil within a person, all of us, included. i'm really keen on "discovering" the works of Miyazaki. i'm really now interested in finding some books of his. Nausicaa of the valley of the wind is a familiar title, that as far as i can remember, was a manga. not sure though. i'll try to look for them as soon as i have the time to search the shops, probably when the sem is over. hope some are still available.
i've only restricted myself to collecting the manga of Takahashi (e.g. Ranma 1/2, etc.) for about 6 years and watching only a handful of anime (most of the time only those shown on tv). and it is only now that i "opened" my doors to new "works" and it's a pity that i am discovering them only now.
may i please join you guys to your movie marathon EB? pretty please! i'll definitely bring food. :)

i did some research about Hayao Miyazaki's works. yes, nausicaa of the valley of wind first appeared on manga. it was released from 1982-1994 as graphic novels. 7 issues lang yung ginawa niya. between that period, gumagawa siya ng movies kaya paputol-putol din yung manga. may manga pa kaya na available sa mga shops dito? if worse comes to worse, i have to order pa online, eh di ko pa alam kung papaano. :~( grrr. how can i get my hands onto the manga?
here's a list of Miyazaki's works: from http://www.nausicaa.net
Ghibli films:
Nausicaa of the valley of wind (1984)
Laputa: the castle in the sky (1986)
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
Porco Rosso (1992)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
and meron siyang bagong film...
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
na ipapalabas sa Japan this year!!!
films by Isao Takahata (partner in crime ni Miyazaki)
Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Only Yesterday (1991)
Pom Poko (1994)
My Neighbors the Yamadas(1999)
...and alam nyo ba na Miyazaki had a hand in the animation of Lupin III!!!but this was still in the 70's. pinapanood ko siya when it had its run in philtv . ngayon ko lang nalaman and i still can't believe it. the anime was very popular in japan during those times. hehehehe.:)

Hayao Miyazaki: master animator
A brief introduction to his major works
[b]Noel Vera
Hayao Miyazaki, because of his popularity and pre-eminence in Japanese animation, has often been called "The Walt Disney of Japan." This, I think, is totally unfair: Miyazaki is a far more complex filmmaker. Comparing his work to the cut-and-dried, standardized droppings of The Mouse Factory is an insult, not a compliment.
Hayao Miyazaki was born to a wealthy family that manufactured rudders for Mitsubishi Zeros during World War II. This influenced his life two ways: it is the source of his lifelong passion for flight and for all things that fly, and it is the cause of his ambivalence towards war and war machines.
His mother is described as a strict, intellectual woman who
spent nine years of her life (and most of Miyazaki's childhood) in a hospital with spinal tuberculosis; it's possible to read Miyazaki's tendency to fill his films with strong, spirited women as a tribute to his mother's character. It's also possible to read his tendency to make his protagonists either motherless (Nausicaa), orphans (Sheeta and Pazu; Sen) or mother-deprived (Satsuki
and Mei) as his way of identifying with them--binding them closer to him, by (a crucial phrase, this) "sharing the burden of suffering."
Miyazaki was doing animation since 1963; he directed his first animated feature in 1979--Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (yes, the feature film version of the popular anime series on Channel 7--someone should think about releasing the film here). His high reputation, however, rests on a handful of films--"Nausicaa, of the Valley of the Wind" (1984); "Laputa: Castle in the Sky"
(1986); "My Neighbor Totoro" (1988); "Kiki's Delivery Service" (1989); and his latest, "Princess Mononoke" (1997).
The thirteen-year period from "Nausicaa" (where most of
Miyazaki's team--musical composer Joe Hisaishi, producer/fellow filmmaker Isao Takahata, and others--were first put together) to "Princess Mononoke" (where he makes extensive use of digital animation) was one of steady and impressive growth. "Nausicaa" was seen by almost a million Japanese when it opened in 1984; "Mononoke," thirteen years later, sold thirteen million tickets and is the single most successful Japanese film ever made--with grosses comparable to the tremendously popular "Titanic."
"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" is about a young princess and her tiny kingdom at the edge of a vast forest. The stuff of fairy tales, you might say--except that the girl flies a jet-powered kite and is a formidable fighter, the forest is a sea of fungi that gives off poisonous gases, and the kingdom is a valley
protected from the noxious fumes by a constantly blowing wind. It's a thousand years into the future, after much of the world has been destroyed by what is called "The Seven Days of Fire," and there are rumors of yet another war.
"Nausicaa" is that rarest of creatures, an ecological science fiction epic; its closest equivalent would be David Lynch and Frank Herbert's equally ecological "Dune." The forest of poisoned fungi is not just another fantastical setting for an adventure flick, but (as in "Dune") a complex system of air and water, plant and predator; the giant insects swarming through the forest aren't simply fearsome monsters, but (again, as in "Dune") play an
active role. Much of the drama and sense of wonder in the film comes from learning how that system works (explained in a far more coherent manner than in the film of "Dune"--which suffers from Lynch's obsessive quirks and Herbert's overcomplicated plot).
The film is also a portrait of a remarkable heroine--Princess Nausicaa, daughter of Lord Jhil, of the Valley of the Wind. She's tough, she's uncannily strong and swift; basically what you'd expect from someone who continually explores the poisoned forest by herself, who steers her glider by the strength of her arms, who reacts to sudden wind changes with quicksilver instincts. She has a natural gift for empathy, an uncanny way of taming animals and making friends. Her "philosophy" seems to consist of
treasuring life in all its forms, no matter how dangerous, suspicious, or skeptical--from a panicky fox-squirrel to a paranoid fellow princess (waving what looks like a beautifully engraved Colt .45 in one armored hand) to a rampaging "Ohmu" (enormous insect-like creature with fourteen eyes, impenetrable carapace, and very
touchy temper). I put the word "philosophy" in quotes because Miyazaki never seems to allow his heroine at any point to actually express it--she just acts it out, as simply and swiftly as she can.
It helps that the film is a marvel of motion and colors, even with crude 1984 animation and a cel-per-second count as low as 8 or 12 (Disney films, made on far bigger budgets, use 24 cels-per-second). There are images here--the Ohmu's first dramatic appearance, the underground caverns, the "God Soldier's" assault, the final encounter between Nausicaa and the Ohmu--to ravish both mind and heart, all put on film to serve Nausicaa's "philosophy."
It would have been too easy for Miyazaki to preach to his
audience (thus losing their trust), and as easy for his princess to act cute (thus losing their respect). That he doesn't and she isn't suggests Miyazaki's extraordinary control of emotional tone; he brings his awkward, unlikely load of ecological and ethical enlightenment to a landing, as deft and sure as any Nausicaa manages in the film with her glider.
I think (and I'm far from being alone on this) that "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" is the finest Japanese anime ever; I'd go so far as to claim it may be the best of all animated feature films, Japanese or otherwise. I even think (though on this I'm probably alone) that in terms of complexity, scope, and sheer
bravura storytelling, it's the greatest science fiction film ever made. "Nausicaa" owes nothing to the "Star Wars" or "Blade Runner" school of filmmaking, though the world it creates is as intricately detailed, though more rationally (and far more imaginatively) constructed. A great film, possibly Miyazaki's best work to date.
"Laputa: Castle in the Sky" is a far more entertaining film than "Nausicaa," and shares some of the latter's epic sweep. It's as if Miyazaki had asked a child what his or her idea of a great adventure would be, and this was the result--a giddy mix of spies and soldiers and pirates and robots all running after a pair of children who, in turn, are looking for the legendary Laputa, a flying island-fortress filled with treasure and awe-inspiring power.
Even here Miyazaki exerts subtle powers of characterization--Sheeta and Pazu, the two children, are kind and sweet and orphans to boot, yet never seem mawkish; you feel for their unasked-for predicament, you find yourself breathless at every narrow escape, every parapet's edge clung to in quiet desperation. Miyazaki is even able to weave in a theme, the merest suggestion really, but nevertheless there, nevertheless organic to the film's action: that no matter how intense our dream of flight and escape, we can never be free of our need for rootedness, for solid ground and nurturing soil.
After the size and ambition of his last two features, Miyazaki's next, "My Neighbor Totoro," must have come as a surprise. No giant insects, no flying castles--in fact, for the first half of the film, nothing more extraordinary happens than a Japanese family--a father and his two daughters--moving into their new home. "Totoro" is often regarded as a children's film--the two daughters make friends with a magical forest being they call a "Totoro," a monster with huge teeth, thick fur, and megaphone voice--but it's more than that. Amidst scenes of natural beauty and everyday living--scenes that recall the commonplace feel of the films of Yasujiro Ozu--runs a thread of genuine sadness: their mother is sick, and confined to a hospital. It's the source of much of their loneliness, their unspoken anguish, and the reason why the children seek out Totoro.
"Totoro" is often regarded as Miyazaki's most personal film; as mentioned, his own mother suffered from spinal tuberculosis. The film is also a lyrical evocation of childhood--of its total innocence, its intense pain, of the way memories of it seem to touch a chord in all of us.
Miyazaki continues in this smaller-scaled--though no less
captivating--mode of storytelling with "Kiki's Delivery Service," about a witch who at the age of thirteen has to go on her own way, find a city, and settle down. Again, the idealized setting--a lovely island city cobbled together from bits of Stockholm, Visby, Lisbon, Napoli, San Francisco, plus the coastlines of the Baltic and the Mediterranean Sea. Again, the impossibly kind characters that somehow are always true to themselves, that never descend to easy cuteness or cheap sentimentality. Again, scenes of flying, beautifully done--as if Fred Astaire had forgotten to stick to the ground and just kept going, into the wild blue. Here, Miyazaki suggests that growing up is a continuing series of tiny transactions that result in loss or gain--Kiki leaves her home but finds a new city to live in; she wins new friends, but loses contact with her pet cat; she is deprived of her powers of
flight, but gains a new understanding of life.
"Princess Mononoke" is Miyazaki's return to epic anime with a vengeance. Ashatika, a young warrior, kills a rampaging boar god to save his village, but not before he is fatally cursed. He learns that the boar had gone into rampage because of a bullet lodged in his flesh, torturing him and driving him mad. To save himself Ashitaka has to travel to the source of the bullet--a faraway village that has developed the techniques of metalworking, and is cutting down trees in the nearby forests to make more.
Ashitaka finds himself caught in a war between man and nature, between the village--led by the fierce Lady Eboshi--and the animal spirits of the forest, the Mononokes. Right and wrong has never been a clear-cut issue in a Miyazaki film; the trouble with (and glory of) his characters, as Jean Renoir would no doubt point out, is that "everyone has their reasons" for doing what they do. This is more readily apparent in "Princess Mononoke" than in Miyazaki's other pictures. Lady Eboshi despoils the forests, yet provides security and dignity to former lepers and prostitutes; the animal spirits posses the unthinking ferocity of wild animals, yet looking at them, you cannot deny that they also posses a certain nobility of spirit. Grand questions--"Can man live peacefully with nature? With other men? Why, or why not?"--are asked with an ambivalence and urgency that has rarely been seen before on film, much less anime.
There are sequences here that in sweep and intricacy of detail outdo even the best of recent Japanese anime--"Akira," "Ghost in the Shell," "Spriggan," to name a few--meaning some of the best ever made. I'd like to point out that the aforementioned films dealt mostly with machinery in an advanced technological setting, while "Mononoke" takes place entirely in natural landscapes--a far more difficult feat, considering that tanks and robots are
far easier to animate than a deer, a blowing wind, a waterfall.
It's Miyazaki's grandest, most ambitious film to date. Perhaps too ambitious; you miss the emotional impact of "Nausicaa" and "Laputa," the sublime simplicity of "Kiki" and "Totoro." It's always possible that Miyazaki never intended to make the characters in "Mononoke" affecting; if anything, they recall the darker, more ambiguous people in Miyazaki's thousand-page "Nausicaa"
manga (from which "Mononoke" derived some of its plot points, and much of its imagery). The problem is that the manga had a thousand pages in which to develop its characters, to make them complex and, eventually, moving; "Mononoke" has only a hundred and thirty-five minutes--an almost unheard-of length for an animated
feature, yet hardly enough to contain the sheer complexity of the story being told.
That said, "Mononoke" shows that Miyazaki is a storyteller above all others, and that he still has the passion and imagination to go beyond what he (and practically everyone else) has already done before.
His next film? The story of a child whose parents have been turned into pigs.
Sounds like something to look forward to.
("My Neighbor Totoro" was released by Fox Video; "Kiki's
Delivery Service" was released by Buena Vista Home Video. All are dubbed in English, and all are available at Amazon.com. Miyazaki's films can also be seen at various local anime clubs; check out the AnimaArki website at http://welcome.to/animersion, or the Anima Anime website at http://come.to/animaanime)

Princess Mononoke in DVD is out already in the U.S. Hindi ko pa binibili. Actually mas marami pa ngang japanese anime shows diyan sa Pilipinas kaysa dito sa U.S. Ang maganda lang dito sa US ay meron silang mga convention shows. It's too expensive to buy original manga VHS tapes dito sa U.S., especially kung dubbed pa siya. Around $15-25 dollars ang isang original U.S. or Japanese VHS tape. Pero naisip ko na mas worth it bilhin iyong manga DVD at mas makakamura ka if you bought it in package like i did for Record of Lodoss War 1 & 2. Kasi hindi nagagasgas kahit ilang beses mo pa siya panoorin, hindi tulad sa VHS tape.
May tanong lang ako sa inyo. I'm planning to buy pirated manga VHS and VCD diyan sa Pilipinas.
1.Sa tingin ninyo, saang lugar ang pinakamura at maraming selection? It would be nice kung meron kayong alam sa Quezon City dahil taga doon ako.
2.Itong mga pirated manga tapes...is this tapes copied from the original North American version or puro japanese version lang ito? Oh baka naman sino sino lang ang nag-translate nito sa english? paki-answer please.
3.Sabi ninyo na bumibili kayo ng mga manga books at comics. Original ba siya? Kung original..eh paano ninyo mababasa dahil japanese text yon like i always see here in Japan Town store sa SF. Bakit marunong ba kayong magbasa ng japanese? paki-answer ulit. thanks.
P.S. waiting for your replies. salamat ulit. paki-post na rin dito iyong mga lugar ng stores kung saan kayo bumibili ng mga manga collection.

Hmmm... I could only volunteer an answer to question #3. I own fairly sized collection of manga. I just try to follow the flow of the story from the illustrations given. The major laughs come from the extreme reactions of the characters (e.g. Ranma 1/2 and City Hunter) :D

well...to #3 din, some of my friends took japanese classes. kaya ang galing na nilang magbasa ng kanji. or like kartoonista, i-fofollow mo yung pictures.
about sa pirated vcd's and manga's i wouldn't recommend it. kawawa naman si miyazaki-san (even if he's very rich, i-respect pa rin natin ang IPR). pero marami dyan sa tabi-tabi. about naman sa version...depende. sometimes, pag ibang version (like galing sa UK or sa US) may cut. lalo na pag-dubbed kasi tinatry nilang sumabay sa bibig nung character. at kung dub, minsan iba yung sinasabi sa original na sinabi nung character in japanese. depende sa translations kasi yan. kaya i would recommend subtitles kung hindi ka naman nakakaintindi ng japanese. and of course pangit yung quality pag-pirated, especially with miyazaki na very detailed yung frames.
pero pag manga. it's hard kasi...the pag yung original japanese (which is very expensive) and ganda ng paper...at yung cover and all. usually yung binebenta sa comic alley is chinese (usually mandarin) which is usually made in taiwan or hong kong. for the original manga's you can buy or order sa animaanime. and i recommend yung galing japan (yung original), ganda ng quality at andami pang ina-add na features...

hello hello sa inyo! musta na? dami kong na-miss ha!
dee-dee, yup, from UP ako pero graduate na. meron kse kaming exhibit on March 23 and naloloka na ako! waaahhh.. nakakabaliw! hay! dami pang kelangang gawin! Good Luck sa Exams mo dee-dee!
as for the anime marathon, dee-dee, diba merong AVR sa Faculty Center? nagpapa-rent sila ng AVR. i duno how much nga lang. puedeng venue yon. you could ask them how much para tingnan natin kung possible yon. kung mura, hati-hati na lang tayo sa bayad, pero kung mahal.. ehe he he.. wag na lang! ;) Usually, dyan nagpapalabas yung Tomo-Kai pag nag-aanimefest sila. Puede ring magpabayad tayo ng entrance kung mahal yung AVR rent.
Darkshader, for your Q's, if you're planning to buy pirated VCD's and VHS, you should check it first. panoorin mo muna kung maganda ang quality ng pagkaka-copy nila. personally, i dont like pirated VCD's kase panget talaga sya. VHS, i wrote an address here kung san ka makakakuha. honest yung owner nung store na yon. He'll say if the copy is panget or not. Usually, you could buy pirated VHS at 200-300. buy na yung P200. but u could also get less than P200. VCD's are mor expensive talaga. pinakamababa na so far yung P200 na nakita ko before. Sobrang dami sa greenhills ng anime tapes. its better kung may friend ka na merong original copies and copy it na lang. pero as dee-dee said dapat respect din kay miyazaki ;) ... ang kaso nga lang eh soooobrang hirap maghanap ng original copies here sa Pinas... sobrang mahal pa kung meron ka mang makita. asus!
i also recommend the subtitled copies. mas may integrity yung pagkaka-translate sa kanila since most of them were translated by Otakus. yung mga Anime fans. they try to retain the integrity of the story and language of the film.
as for mangga, wala akong masyadong alam dyan.. hehehe.. tingnan mo na lang answers nila dee-dee and kartoonista. mas gusto ko kase ang film.. hehehe... mahal rin kse yan. there's a lot of them sa Greenhills din. you just have to canvas muna .. look and ask around muna before you buy anything para mas safe. mahal din yan eh.
mga ppl, lets try to do this AnimeFest na ha. Grimlock! Promise ha, you'll bring the food... hehehe...
ingatz kayong lahat lagi!!!

hello everyone! busy pa ba people? kelan na ba movie marathon? hehe. just give the details. super busy pa rin ako next week. finals na kasi. could you believe may exam pa ako up to first week of april? pero last na yon. basta please schedule na lahat free. thanks:).
dee-dee
Mar 24, 2001, 12:13 PM
hmm...i'll be leaving for vacation this april. by the second week i'll be leaving manila. we might have it scheduled sa may para makapagprepare tayo... we need the copies...as in if possible lahat ng works niya or at least yung mga major stuff.
mura lang yung reservations sa CAL AVR. but we need publicity para naman maraming pupunta! argh! :) how fun this is going to be!! inaanticipate ko na!
hmmm...mag-chip in tayo sa gastos. pero mas matipid yata if we're gonna do it informal. yung parang barkada movie marathon EB (PEX style). ummm...potluck would be great. we need a very good venue lang talaga.
what movies are we going to show? i have a copy of princess mononoke (subtitled).
_____________
btw, tomorrow anime@arki will be showing princess mononoke. sa UP Diliman, archi auditorium (right? basta sa arki!!).

sige, sa May na lang natin ituloy yung Miyazaki Marathon. I could offer yung My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery and Grave of the Fireflies. I also have Nausicaa na subtitled pero medyo malabo... yung Laputa ko naman eh mas malabo rin. i'll still bring those two in case you'll all still want to watch it. pero definitely yung first 3 na minention ko eh sobrang linaw. so, where are we going to show this? sa CAL-AVR na kaya? how much daw yung rental dee-dee? sige, lets all talk about this further para mas ma-plano natin ng husto. cant wait for this to happen!
Good Luck sa exams mo Grimlock!
Happy Vacation to you all!!

Hi.
If you guys can get a hold of the Nuasicaa manga books, you'll see that it is infinitely better than the Valley of the Winds anime version. That anime movie was cut very short. Although I did love the anime, the story in the manga was more complex and basically better. :)
I have the Laputa VCD although it is in Japanese with Chinese subtitles. I have on VHS Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service. Again in Japanese with Chinese subtitles. I have a recorded VHS of Valley of the Winds when it was shown in GMA 7 a long long time ago. Wish I had those tapes/vcds here with me in Australia though. Left it behind at home. :(
And I would love to join you guys in an anime watching marathon but unfortunately I'm now working here in Australia. Maybe some other time when I get back, I hope I can join in an EB or something.

For me Spirited Away is Miyazaki's Alice in Wonderland although it goes beyond Lewis Carroll's story in so much as it has very profound truths to it.
These truths, for me are the colors that are painted on the grand tapestry of animation and music of Spirited Away.
For me, Disney cannot be at par with Studio Ghibli. They will always fall very much behind.
