2002: UE held the twice-to-beat advantage but was defeated by Ateneo twice, effectively eliminating the Warriors' dreams of making it to the UAAP Finals that year. the Blue Eagles eventually won the UAAP men's basketball championship title by beating the then defending champions De La Salle Green Archers.

2008: Ateneo meets UE in the Final Four. will the Blue Eagles again break the Warriors' hearts or will UE finally hurdle the "Final Four jinx" by beating Ateneo?

I know the guards will have to carry this game for UE, but dont count out espiritu thieeeeeellllleeeee and llagas. Especially Llagas, he was spectacular the last 2 games. I just hope that marcy and james would be able to lead the team.

Ateneo should be prepared to face a determined press by UE this Sunday. Ateneo's transition defense will be key if Ateneo wants to win. 2nd team will be instrumental as Eric, Kirk, Yuri, Bacon and Nico would be facing the likes of Reyes, Lee and Mumar. UE's guards are highly defensive minded and cause a lot of turnovers for easy fastbreak points.

I think Coach Norman should not give so much playing time for the 2nd team so as to always have a strong five on court always. Except for Eric, 2nd team should just come in and play for 3 minutes only just to give the starters a brief rest. It is important that a strong and seasoned team always stay on court to control the boards and the tempo of the game. The Ateneo team should not loose composure and poise in the face of the pressing defense of UE.

Ateneo may not be so lucky with their 3s in the final quarter like the last game so they should concentrate on grinding the ball in the frontcourt the whole game to put pressure on UE's big men. Bench of UE is weak with regards to the big men so if we can tire them out or put in foul trouble their starting big men, it would be easier to control the fast break game of UE.

For Ateneo to win they should play the way they did against DLSU. Defense is the key to ADMU's game. They should shackle the shooters the way they did against DLSU. DLSU and UE are similar in the way they play and defend. I think Norman learned a lot from the DLSU game and will adapt it to this all-important game.

I have a feeling this is going to be another "ugly" game pero kaya to ng Blue Eagles.

Al-Hussaini anchors Ateneo in Final Four

HEIGHT is might for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.

With center Rabeh Al-Hussaini enjoying a break out season, the Eagles easily topped the eli*mination of the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament with 13 wins in 14 games.

The Eagles will face No. 4 University of the East Red Warriors while No. 2 De La Salle Green Archers will battle No. 3 Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the Final Four beginning Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

The coaches of the three other teams in the Final Four think the frontline of the Eagles make them the favorite in the playoffs.

“Rabeh has become a player that you have to think of a lot,” said La Salle’s assistant coach Tonichi Yturri during Friday’s SCOOP Forum at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.

“Ang advantage ng Ateneo is ‘yung big man nila [Al-Husaini],” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio. “Kailangang i-double siya kaya nakakalibre ang shooters nila.

Bong Ravena, who represented UE coach Dindo Pumarem, for his part said that every possession counts against the Eagles.

“The Eagles play smart basketball. Rabeh and Chris Tiu are smart kids. Kaya kailangan namin i-value iyong every possession as much as possible.”

Ateneo coach Norman Black also though that his team’s advantage in height worked wonders for them.

“I think size has been our biggest advantage so far. The teams started to respond by double teaming our big guys like Rabeh and try to stop him and that opens it up for other players,” said Black.

Against the Blue Eagles, Ravena is optimistic that the Red Warriors can force another game for a chance to make it to the finals.

“The way we played our last three games, we are in a better situation. May chance kami,” said Ravena.

The Warriors won their last three games to secure the last Final Four spot at 9-5.

In the other series, Yturri said that the Archers should take advantage of their psychological edge over the Tamaraws.

“Their backs are against the wall after our win in the playoff,” said Yturri. “It is now more mental than physical.”

Capacio didn’t buy the idea.

“Kami naman, every game we do our best. Ang sa akin, it is up to Him [God] kung ibibigay sa amin as long as gagawin namin yung part namin.”

Ateneo should finish the series right away. They have to end the frustrations they encountered in final 4 the past seasons. This is their year. UE no less wants to ambush Ateneo. Dindo Pumaren is out to save his job after those heartbreak losses in the past and after being accused of throwing games away in favor of his brother Franz. Dindo wants redemption otherwise, he'l be fired next season.

Eagles, Archers gun for final

Ateneo has been successful against La Salle and UE so far this year, beating both teams twice in the elims. Ateneo closed it out with a 13-1 record, its only loss being dealt by FEU.
But the Final Four is a different story.

“UE is a good team. I mean they were the favorites going into this league (season). We have respect for them. We have to break their pressure and get the ball inside,” Black added.

And on we go to the Finals! I am utterly surprised (but absolutely happy) with the result. I expected a much tighter game. I was actually nervous at the start knowing UE's capabilities. But lo and behold! A blowout game NOT dominated by Rabeh and Chris, which is a very good sign for the Blue Eagles.

Jai was truly explosive. Eric was brilliant with his daredevil moves. Nonoy was reliable (as always). Chris, Rabeh, and Ryan did exactly what was necessary considering they are fully aware that they are marked (keep the opponent's eyes on them so their team mates would have more room to play their game).

Salva, Sumalinog, Gonzaga: Fun times for you guys! Gotta love your moves to the basket! We need you in the finals.

Same goes for Kirk and Bacon (please please please).

Still need to work on how we bring the ball down in the face of pressure defense though. I'm sure Coach Norman would look into this more.
