NCAA is surely saving the best for last in the finale of the second round elimination as rivals San Beda and Letran will clash in a pivotal game this Wednesday. The pressure of a SBC-CSJL contest will be felt by the players, coaches of both teams and perhaps felt strongest by the fans.
San Beda is already assured of a twice to beat advantage but not the top post. Letran meanwhile is already assured of a playoff for the 2nd spot but can still slide out of the Final 4 picture since a lose will put them in a quadruple tie with the Stags, Cardinals and the Heavy bombers with 9-5 win-loss card.
Red-clad Lions of Mendiola will try to spoil Letran's bid for a twice to beat advantage. Leading the Benedictine squad are the triumvirate of pro-bound John Paul Escobal, last year's Finals MVP Ogie Menor and former Rookie-MVP Sam Ekwe. This will be the Last year of senior Lions Escobal and Ekwe and would want to win their third championship in three consecutive years of stay as Red Lions. This might also be the last time they will be playing against their rivals.
In Contrary, Letran is expected to bring their A game not only because they are facing their rivals but also this game weighs a lot more for them than the Red Lions. After a near flawless first round record, the Knights struggled in the second round resulting for other
teams to caught-up with them in the standings. They can make it up with their mistakes with just a single win, but they have to get that win against their archrivals and defending champs San Beda in the final game day of the eliminations.
One of the interesting match-up will be between titans Ogie Menor and Dino Daa who was involved in a heated physical action in the first round. Not be outdone is the match-up between pointguards Borgie Hermida and Kojak Melegrito. Melegrito who was caught giving a cheap shot to Hermida and Escobal had to be ejected in their first round meeting early in the 1st quarter. He will have to behave himself if he would like to finish the game at the court not in the bleachers this time because he will be vital in coach Alas' rotation.
As they say, Expect an all-out college basketball war at the Big Dome this coming Wednesday.

I'll be anticipating a physical game from Letran. Twice to beat advantage is their motivation and they will do everything to get that edge in the Final Four. Referees should be extra alert to those cheap shots. There's always something unpleasant happens during a San Beda v Letran game.

Dude, this will be the last game of the regular season, so apat talaga ang magttie if ever matalo ang Letran.
However if Letran wins, then both Letran and San Beda will be tied at 10-4. Given that both team will have a twice to beat edge in the semis, how will be the positioning? who will take the top spot among the two? Will it be San Beda or Letran?

Assuming Letran wins; If they beat San Beda by less than 4pts, SBC will still be number 1, If they defeat SBC by at least 5pts, Letran will take the number 1 position. Ewan ko lang mangyayari kung 4pts lang din lamang nila

Although effective at times, I don't think he can be that effective against Letran. Chico is error prone, not ideal to field in against a team who uses a full-court press.

Have you noticed na kahit gaano kaganda ang depensa ng isang team minsan na o overpower ng SBC dahil walang makapag match up one on one sa kanila. Case in point yung game against SSC.
Kung baga pag matatalo ang SBC eh they just use pure strength to win the game.

Scenarios
NCAA Scenarios
Written by jonas_terrado
Sunday, September 07, 2008 10:53:00 AM
The following contains the scenarios that the NCAA will map out in case of a three-way tie or a four-way tie for second.
The NCAA is using FIBA classification point system.
In case of a three-way tie at 9-5:
W L P
No.3 SSC-R 3 1 7
No. 4 MIT 2 2 6
No. 5 JRU 1 3 5
No. 4 will play No. 5 in KO match, winner will face No. 3 for seeding in the Final Four, No. 3 or No. 4 while loser automatically out.
Note: This scenario is only applicable if Letran wins against SBC on Wednesday. In that case, both teams will have 10-4 cards and assured of twice-to-beat, but will have to play in a playoff to determine which team takes No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
In case of four-way tie at 9-5:
W L P
No.2 SSC-R 4 2 10
No. 3 MIT 3 3 9
No. 4 Letran 3 3 9
No. 5 JRU 2 4 8
Note: This scenario is only applicable if SBC beats Letran on Wednesday. In that case, SBC gets the top seeding in the Final Four and the first twice-to-beat incentive.
Note: LC and MIT - Both teams are tied with 9 points each, but it doesn't matter which team gets No. 3 or No. 4 in the KO seeding because they will face-off whatever their quotient is.
No. 2 will play No. 5 and No. 3 will play No. 4. Winners of both games will play in another KO match to determine which team gets No. 2 seeding in the Final Four and the twice-to-beat incentive. Losing team gets No. 3. Losing teams in the first two KO matches will also play in another KO match to determine No. 4.

NCAA path down to two scenarios
by Mike Abasolo
This part of College Basketball is getting better and better each week. After the final game of the elimination round, we’ll find out the best scenario possible for NCAA Season 84. In my years of following the NCAA, this is probably the 1st time, in such a long time, a situation like this has ever happened.
So we are on another history trail in the making. It’s been an exciting season so far. And this is what all of you NCAA enthusiasts are willing to pay for. Let us look at only two remaining scenarios.
If Letran wins on September 10, San Beda and Letran will have an identical 10-4 card and will have a three way tie at 9-5, we can call them the Fab Five for now, but it can also be the Final Five, but definitely not the one from motown.
Anyway, both are assured of twice to beat but will have another playoff game to determine who takes the summit.
San Sebastian, Mapua and JRU, in pecking order, comprise 3rd, 4th and 5th spot of the standings. With JRU’s loss to Mapua in the 2nd round and using the FIBA point system (Rule D – Classification of Teams plus assuming the NCAA Mancom has made the right arithmetic), to determine the seeding order, the Cardinals ended up with better numbers thus seizing the No. 4 spot. Mapua’s resilience throughout the elimination round actually paid off.
To determine the 4th seed, Mapua and JRU will have a sudden death outing to be determined after September 10. The winner of the sudden death affair will face San Sebastian in another do or die encounter to determine the 3rd and 4th spot of the Final Four.
If San Beda wins on September 10, San Beda will be untouchable with its twice to beat advantage intact.
If this happens, it will be a Final Four towards the Final Four because of a four-way tie at 9-5.
Using again the FIBA point system, San Sebastian, Mapua, Letran and JRU shall comprise the order of business in this series. In this case, San Sebastian will face JRU, and Mapua will take on Letran.
Winners will have another round to determine who sits on No. 2 and get the next twice to beat incentive. The loser takes the 3rd slot.
Losers will have their own series to determine the No. 4 slot and earn the right to face the NCAA defending champs in case this scenario comes to life. Loser takes a vacation.
So there you have it. An NCAA Season worth remembering. It is surely one of the most memorable ever. And who says that this is a league dominated by a single team? Anybody who thinks like so is absolutely mistaken.

Isang game day lang ang playoffs?! If I'm not mistaken, regardless of the result of San Beda - Letran there will be atleast 4 playoff games to determine the positioning in the Final 4. so there should be atleast 2 playoff game dates.

*okay*

classic flamebait.
shameful comment, first of all, Bedans respect Bastinians. Their Assistant Coach Jolly Escobar is a Bedan, which makes them a very dangerous opponent because they have an inside track of the mind set of our team. We also respect the Stags because of their strong 90's team that defeated our team (Bajar, Rivera, Manuel, Gonzales) fair and square on the hard court. Our sense of history acknowledges that the Stags is a very competitive opponent with good and decent support from their crowd.
2nd, Mapuans are great engineers and the institution has its own plane, so how can they not afford tickets. The Mapuans also handed us a disappointing defeat in the finals when our team was then composed of Victoria, Morano and Manucat. They have our respect and we are not crass as to insult them in this manner.
Viva Mapua.

EL REAL COLEGIAL DE LETRAN
Slow pace game seems effective for Mapua when playing against San Beda. I doubt if Letran can match-up against San Beda in a transition game.
I say, slow pace and play zone defense *okay*
For San Beda, they just have to be wary of the three point shots and perimeter shooting of Letran. Guards should avoid turnovers at all cost. Coach Frankie should anticipate the daunted full-court press of Letran.

Nope. Maglalaban pa yung Final 4 (after the 4-way tie is broken).
For now, we have to know what are the teams of the F4 and their respective positions. Para start na ang F4 matches.
Usually 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.
Last year we were 4th. Kaya kinalaban natin ang San Beda, then no. 1 team.

i think the reason why ekwe did not play because sobra ang bantay sa kanya ni foronda.

San Beda stops Letran; four squads now tied for second
by Josef Ramos
SAN BEDA College not only disposed of its archrivals, but left a ton of work for four other teams vying for three Final Four slots.
Slippery playmaker Borgie Hermida scored on a buzzer-beating tear drop to pilot the Red Lions to a pulsating 65-63 overtime victory against the Letran Knights in the 84th NCAA men’s basketball tournament last September 10, 2008 at the Araneta Coliseum.
After Letran go-to-guy RJ Jazul’s registered a game-tying basket, Hermida inbounded the ball to Pong Escobal, who then passed it back to the former San Beda Red Cub after three Knights suffocated him on defense. Hermida knocked in the shot to leave Letran and three other squads to battle it out for the remaining semifinal berths.
“I really had no idea that there’s enough time after receiving that pass from Pong. I though we were heading to another OT,” said Hermida, who fired in 12 of his 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field in the fourth period. “This was a classic game for me and for my team.”
The Red Lions bucked the sluggish play of center Sam Ekwe, who tallied a season-low four points and six rebounds in 19 minutes of play, thanks in part to the Knights’ pesky defense in the shaded area.
“It was Sam’s worst game. We could not get anything from him even in the second half,” said San Beda head coach Frankie Lim when asked by why he did not play Ekwe in the overtime period. “We used Dave Marcelo instead.”
Marcelo hauled down eight rebounds and swatted three shots in 26 minutes of action.
The Red Lions, with the win, closed out the elimination round with an 11-3 mark and will have a week-long rest before plunging into action in the Final Four. The Letran Knights joined San Sebastian College, Mapua and Jose Rizal University in a four-way logjam for second place.
Now, the Knights have to play Mapua while JRU take on San Sebastian on Monday. The winners of both games duel for the second twice-to-beat incentive or the number two spot, while the losers tangle for the number four slot.
San Beda almost won the game in regulation but Ogie Menor, who only had eight points but grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists, managed to only split his two charities off a Kirk del Rosario foul with 17.9 seconds left. That knotted the count at 54-all.
Chico Tirona banged in a three-pointer that shattered the 60-all deadlock with 1:01 left in overtime, giving the defending champions a 63-60 edge. Then, Jazul split his charities in the ensuing play to slice the San Beda advantage to 61-63 with 42 seconds remaining.
After San Beda’s 24-second shot-clock violation, Jazul immediately scored and tied the count at 63 with six seconds left, before Hemida pulled off his backbreaker.
“Hats off to Borgie, he made this exciting shot. He was struggling in the first half but he stepped up down the stretch,” said Lim. “I just needed to encourage him because I believe he’s coming back and it happened.”
Guard Pong Escobal, who was picked by Talk ‘N Text in the recent 2008 PBA Rookie Draft, topscored for the Red Lions with 15 points and four assists.
“We really lost it,” said Letran coach Louie Alas. “I’m hoping we can get back at them. Anyway, we still need to win a crucial game against Mapua on Monday.”
Jazul finished with 18 points while Dino Daa contributed 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Knights, who scored 28 points off of San Beda’s 29 errors. But the Mendiola outfit had 10 more rebounds than their opponents (43-33).

letran gave the game away to san beda. i can't believe the number of turnovers committed by letran in the last one minute of the game (4th quarter). they just simply allowed san beda to take over the game. overtime was all about missed free throws by letran that could have tied the game.

Letran, having a six point lead, relaxed too much during the last minutes of regulation. Not knowing that a span of 1 to 2 minutes is to long a time to catch up...And the Red lions did catched up...though a perfect free throw by Hermida could have ended the game in regulation...Ayus lang....he made up for this in a spectacular fashion ....

ouch! you mean we are stuck with Tirona?! WTF?!?! We will be having difficulties in our backcourt rotations.
why? is chico that bad? last game he fueled our run with his pesky defense to come back from 10pts behind.
chico is good, when he doesn't turn the ball over. :D let's just not hate on any of our players ayos. with all the injuries and everything, that's the last thing that the team needs right now. :)
Although effective at times, I don't think he can be that effective against Letran. Chico is error prone, not ideal to field in against a team who uses a full-court press.

medyo na-excite during the dying minutes of the 4th quarter. It is very uncanny for Letran not to waste some time. Del rosario and Ranises fumbled during the crucial minutes + the missed free throws of guevarra during overtime. breaks of the game lang nagkatalo.
They have a good gameplan against ekwe being at the forefront. Dun masyado yung focus nila, and then maybe lim realized it, they decided to bench ekwe and let the 2nd stringers play. from 1st to 3rd, walamg play si ekwe and the knights are obviously taking advantage of it.
Maybe the good thing that can come out of this, is for alas to have a plan b or c, if ever lim decides to forego with ekwe, and decides to let the 2nd stringers play.

"Winning is Sweeter the Second Time Around: MENDIOLA TOOKOVER INTRAMUROS"
Despite the pouring rain outside the araneta coliseum, an army of red and sea of blue filled the seats of the Big Dome. It was the second round face-off of two of the four oldest teams in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, Philippines. The Letran Knights came with their armor on to claim a sure twice to beat advantage spot.On the other hand, the Red Lions arrived roaring to prove that they are the team to beat and to attest that the Intramuros boys do not have the material to stop them from roaring.
Come the first quarter, the knights fired up the court, press defensing right away the red lions. With jazul's 3-point contributions, the knights proved their superiority over the red lions ending the 1st quarter with an 11 point lead, 20-9. "Beat San Beda, Arriba Letran", "Animo San Beda, Beat Letran", "C-S-J-L Arriba Letran", "Go San Beda Fight!", sixthman of both teams were cheering with all their hearts during the second quarter. Turnovers were all over the place proving the defense skill of both teams. Still, letran retains their composure in the first half silencing the red lion with a 7 point lead 30-23.
From the SAN BEDA's bullying technique of last year - FAUNDO. Season 84 comes with a new cheer for the mendiola kids. MVP contender Jazul of letran had been dubbed as "BABA". It seems the technique works. 3rd quarter was indeed the red lions' revenge cutting the lead of letran down to 3, 42-39. Letran's famous banner "WITHOUT EKWE S'AN BEDA" seems to attest coach lim. The Ekwalizer had a little exposure the whole game. Nevertheless, even without ekwe, from the 1st quarter's 11 point lead of letran, the red lions proved that you can never really under estimate the heart of the champions ending the 4 quarters 54 all.
Overtime seems to start the both team from scratch. The arriba and animo boys struggled at the free throw line. During the last 17 seconds, the intramuros boys anticipated that they will be having the last possession. However, the lions forced a turnover giving Hermida the chance to have the buzzer beater point. Mendiola tookover intramuros ending the game 65-63.
