Keith Agovida, a 6’1" 18-year-old high school player from Jose Rizal, unleashed a chartbuster never before seen in Philippine Basketball. He just scored 82 points in a 127-49 rout of Mapua. That’s the highest in league history since Letran Squire Marlon Bola Bola dropped 71 in the 70s, and yes, in the whole of the country since Allan "The Triggerman" Caidic torched the net with 79 points in the 1987 in the pros. And before we forget, Agovida, who scored 23, 13, 20 and 26 by quarter, also bested by the second highest scoring output in the game in the whole NBA—Kobe Bryant’s 81.

pasensya na mga parekoy pero who the heck is Marlon Bola Bola, did he become a great basketball player or did he end up as a fishball vendor????!!!!!!

OH great he will probably be the next great player in the world comparable to that of Allan Caidic, Kobe Bryant or even to the great MIchael Jordan...or he will probably be one of those forgotten names a decade from now. Agovida, Agua Vida who????

at 6'1' he is probably the tallest in that game but look he did not make a single three point shot making his perimeter game suspect. High school is high school before you start singing halleluya to this guy you might pinch yourself and be real...it may just be an indication of how poorly the Mapuans played defense...just take a look at their current standing.

Yep!

:bop:

I was not able to see the game personally to see for myself if the Red Robins just rolled up and died in the match but if I was coach chito victolero I would have instructed my players to limit Agovida's point production at all costs, even employing occasional hard fouls to stop him from scoring his garbage time points, although not as hard as what Isiah Thomas instructed his Knicks to do against George Karl's Nuggets (when it was apparent that Denver players were just showboating and pading their stats in a blowout effort), but just enough to make the JRU coach think "teka, baka ma injured pa etong star player ko. might as well take him out of the game tutal lamang na lamang na kami". at least in that case, "Malayan" might have spared themselves from the embarassment of being mentioned and remembered as the team that AGovida torched (should i say "massacred"?) enroute to his record-breaking performance.

If i was JRU's coach naman, i would have pulled Agovida earlier to show some class and respect to the enemy who is already down and out. At least in Kobe's 81-point explosion against Toronto, dikit na dikit talaga yung game, and you can't rip him off for padding his stats and showboating while in the process rubbing some more salt to the opponents wounds with his scoring. but then again, thats just me and my opinion. some people might have different takes on the historic game yesterday.

atleast this agovida doesnt need to manipulate stats to increase his stocks. unlike the guy from baste who's stats have been changed for several times. dont know if intentional or hindi ang ERRORS sa stats pero sa kanya lang nagkakaron ng changes. is the encoder for sportingpulse.com from baste?

NCAA player scores 82, sets RP basketball scoring record

High school basketball player Keith Agovida of Jose Rizal Light Bombers unleashed a record-setting shooting binge never seen before in Philippine basketball as he scored 82 points in a 127-49 rout of Mapua Friday.

NCAA officials said the 18-year-old, 6’1" Agovida is now NCAA's highest scorer in over 80 years.

It is the highest in the league's history since Letran Squire Marlon Bola Bola dropped 71 in the '70s.

It is also the highest scoring output in the history of Philippine basketball since Allan "The Triggerman" Caidic torched the net with 79 points in 1987 in the professional basketball league.

Agovida, who scored 23, 13, 20 and 26 in the four quarters, also beat the second-highest scoring output in NBA history, Kobe Bryant’s 81.

With the win, the Light Bombers remained third overall with eight wins and four loses.

@chronobreak18,
about the coach of malayan, i think Chito Victolero is not the head coach, he is the assistant of Randy Alcantara. I think no coach in his right mind would want to be at the other end of a record setting game. agovida went to the free throw line 16 times. i think they used every trick allowed just to contain agovida. maybe agovida is really too good for the inexperienced red robins. i think both coaches have their share of coaching experiences. victolero is one of the assistant coaches of koy banal when san beda won the NCAA seniors championship 2 seasons ago.
about sa coach naman ng jru, he has his own reason why he kept agovida in the game even with a big lead. hindi rin naman niya siguro akalain na makaka record yun agovida, pero after scoring 56 points in the first 3 quarters, aawatin mo pa ba yun? siguro naisip niya rin na dinedehado sila sa stats kasi nga dinadagdagan yung stats ni BRINGAS. kalokohan na siguro ngayon kung masingitan pa sila ni BRINGAS. kahit na tulungan pa siya ng nag ma manipulate ng NCAA stats. makunsensya nalang sana yan. may karma yan. kawawa naman yung ibang maaalis sa Mythical 5 kung sakali, dahil sa pag dagdag ng stat ni bringas

I appreciate your views, but what about you? Have you accomplished something closed to 20% made by Bolabola and Agovida? This boy might have a chance to make a name for himself and I don't care if they played againts the lowly Mapua Red Robins. In fact he averaged closed to a 31 ppg and an indication that he can really score.

He didn't hit a single 3 pointer maybe becaues that is not his range and why in the hell should a player shoot a 3, where you can do it inside the paint or within the boundaries of a 3 point area.

I know his shooting percentage will not as efficient playing in a collegiate team. He could still be a big factor for any team he will opt to join.

Anyway, it's only the Philippine NCAA that produced the Caloy "Big Difference" Loyzaga, Samboy Lim, Alvin Patrimonio, Philip Cezar and a bunch of basketball players that made the Philippines once formidable team in world basketball.

and where did you say he accomplished this feat????

any way you put it, at the end of the day, 82 points is STILL 82 points :bop:. in any league be it a barangay or professional one, against any opponent be it the defending champion or the cellar dweller, it is still an awesome feat *okay*.

so just stop hating and even thinking about this kid's future. just give him credit for what he has achieved for he trully deserves it. if any of you can top, or, at the very least, match this kind of performance by agovida, then you be the first one to cast a stone... *okay*

18 y/o? Bat overage? Nagtransfer ba sya from another school.

Scoring 82 points is an achievement in itself but to score that much points against a mediocre opponent lessens its "greatness".. Parang Edwin Valero, 20+ 1st round KOs pero against "trike drivers".

I hope he continues his scoring romp & earn a slot in next years senior's team, NCAA or UAAP.

thanks for the correction about chito victolero.*okay* anyway, unless someone who actually watached the game will disprove this, i still think that they have not done enough. if they really gave up hard fouls on agovida (and i really mean HARD) then i dont think the JRU coach will think twice in pulling him out, even if the kid is already on the cusp of securing the scoring record.

and if i were the JRU coach, yes i will pull him out. that's what you call class. you dont rub some more salt in an opponent's wound. besides, putting in my bench players may benefit me more as it will build up their confidence in playing. This may be beneficial especially when we face the tougher teams for our next assignment. besides, the 50-60 points he will have would have given him enough buffer to offset whatever magical thing is happening to Bringas' stats that some of you here are insinuating.

SSC repulses JRU in OT, gains juniors final
By Joey Villar
Tuesday, September 9, 2008
Philstar.com

Three-peat champion San Sebastian struck hard in overtime as the Staglets turned back the Jose Rizal Light Bombers, 97-88, yesterday to sweep their way to the finals of the NCAA high school basketball tournament at the Astrodome.

Arvie Bringas, playing on his last season, scored eight of his 29 points in extension to power the Staglets to a rousing 12-game sweep of the double round elims.

That sent SSC straight to the finals with the Staglets needing just a win to complete a rare four-peat championship.

“We’re happy for the sweep because we’re not going through the Final Four anymore,” said San Sebastian coach Raymond Valenzona.

In the other game, St. Benilde ousted San Beda, 77-68, to grab the fourth semifinal spot.

It was the first time that the Red Cubs were knocked out of the top four since 1977.

While Bringas took care of the scoring chores, the rest of the Staglets alternated in holding Keith Agovida to 21 points, keeping him away off his comfort zone majority of the game.

The 6-1 Agovida hit a record-setting 82-point output in leading Jose Rizal U to a 127-49 rout over Mapua last Friday.

“We allowed him to play his game, we just took some of his rebounds and inside points,” said Valenzona of the JRU gunner, who came into the match with a 35- point norm.

Agovida missed 18 of the 25 shots after going 36-of-50 from the field against Mapua.

hindi naman siguro nila gusto yung maiskoran sila ng 82. kasi kung gusto nila sana lahat ng teams ganon ang nagawa sa kanila. siguro naman they tried their best to stop him. kung pinabayaan naman nila yung player maka 82 hindi na siguro pupunta sa free throw line ng 16 times yun. nagkataon lang siguro na maganda nilaro
