I've heard of a couple of my Fil-Am friends talk ebonics using terms such as "chilaxin" and "one" but I don't talk ebonics because it's not in my nature.
I think you'll be interested in this show called "Friday Night Flava" on The Hive 100.3 FM, 9-12 pm. They have a segment dedicated to ebonics.
Wouldn't want to end up looking like a FOB.

doc, I think it's kinda the other way around.. :) I mean.. most Immigrants could or would not talk Ebonics jez for the fact that it's hard to learn or speak the language because they are of course learning formal English. The ebonic "language" or "dialect" is more pervasive to people who actually grew up around Ebonics.
Personally, I don't speak it well since I wasn't really surrounded by Ebonic speaking people but I still grew up around it...
There was a bill in California before that tried to make Ebonics as part of the curriculum. Thank God it didn't pass because I still believe in Formal English as the proper form of communication, especially, in the world of Business....

Ruth, as far as rudiments.. hmmmm... I've noticed that most Filipinos that live there in the Phils that speak or talk ebonics have learned by listenin to HipHop. I guess you could start there.. but the ultimate factor into learning ebonics is really growing up around it. It's funny how some of them use terms that are already archaic in the Ebonic evolution....

hmm...what's your point?:)
i think it sounds strange to hear pinoys talk Ebonics, parang trying hard na ewan. most african-americans talk that way because it's their culture, the environment they grew up in. but to hear it from the mouth of a pinoy...di naman siguro ganon salita nila sa bahay eh!
i understand that they emulate the speech pattern because they embrace hip-hop, especially the music and the fashion, and i don't see anything wrong with borrowing some of their expressions. but i wouldn't be caught dead sounding like that. besides, i think what people fail to see is that hip-hop is an attitude; you can't adopt it just by sounding that way. that's so un cool...
maybe it's just a fad, you know, like in that Spike Lee movie last year Black & White about rich, white kids trying to act black.

Yayin: yah, I agree with you.. it's an attitude and not a way to be "in"
It sounds normal to a lot of filipinos here.. especially those that grew up here.. they actually talk that way at home too... minus the cussing of course. hehe.. they gonna get beatdown by their folks..
the point to this thread really is just to discuss ebonics.. :)

I've been working as a TA for some time now and most of the kids I'm around with are black. They talk in abonics all the time that sometimes, I catch myself talking like them.
My mom, she gets a little exasperated 'cause she can't quite understand what the kids are nattering about sometimes, so she just asks me to translate for her. :D

they were not going to teach ebonics..they were just going to use ebonics to teach the black (african american children) how to speak english properly thru ebonics..parang ebonics, meron syang mga past, present tense tsaka tamang grammatical system..parang subject verb agreement or whatever..they were just going to compare their sentence para mas maintindihan ng mga bata how to speak proper english..
i hope this thread was not put up to make fun of the african americans..

Imma bust a cap on yo fat @ss wid dis ebonics sheet!
hahaha just trying my ebonics skills!
ebonics is not only a way of speaking, also there is a distinct body language that comes with it. The way you walk, the way you move your arms. There is this laid back attitude and the same time menacing air in the body language while speaking ebonics, knaw whatta mean, nigg@h?! I find ebonics amazing. I try to speak it sometimes, when chillin with friends, but not in a business setting.

i meant that's not how they were taught to speak by their parents, you know, as opposed to most black people who don't really know any other way of talking, know what i'm sayin? still, it's a free country.:)

it really depends. a lot of non-black people use it to sound cool, or to project that bad-boy ghetto image. when used this way, there’s nothing more to say but “poseur”.
when heard in context though, it provides a key to understand the richness and the depth of black culture. I find it truly fascinating that the english language has transformed into a form such as this. it is both unique and common at the same time. ebonics has certainly reconstructed the regional and local urban language norms. it is a reflection of real-world experiences, images, people, places and events.
to use it without understanding the etymology of its words and the roots of its phrases just to further our self image is such a waste, as so much insight into a culture so different from ours can be gleamed from a truly pervasive language (TV, radio, movies) such as this.
