UST gets a new gym
by Francis T. Wakefield
Source: Manila Bulletin | August 7, 2008
The construction of a 5,792-seater University of Santo Tomas (UST) gymnasium is now in full swing after university officials, led by Rector Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., led its groundbreaking ceremonies last week.
The construction of the P600-million, state-of-the-start, four-storey gymnasium, designed by Thomasian architects Jose Pedro Recio and Carmelo T. Casas, will be done as part of UST's quadricentennial celebration in 2011.
The four-storey sports complex will house a basketball court, with bleachers to accommodate 5,792 patrons. Aside from basketball, the complex will also house the facilities for badminton, fencing, table tennis, indoor track, dancing, gymnastics, and a fitness center. There will also be classrooms, administrative offices, and space for food concessionaires. A multi-level parking space will also be built outside the gymnasium.
When the old UST gymnasium (located near P. Noval. St., in Sampaloc) was first built in the 1940s, UST only had 3,000 students. Today, after more than 60 years, the population has ballooned to almost 40,000. Aside from students, UST is also the home of 1,600 faculty members, 600 professional support staff, 1,400 employees of the UST hospital and 150,000 parishioners of the UST Santissimo Rosario Parish.
Fr. De la Rosa said the UST gym used to be the biggest in the country, a favorite venue for university affairs like graduation ceremonies, eucharistic celebrations, college anniversaries, rallies and dance concerts.
The new gym, Fr. dela Rosa added, will be more than just a place for events and ceremonies as it will serve as a monument to the unique and unparalleled holistic sports development program of the university. It will become part of the UST Sports Complex, and will become the home of the UST varsity players and the Growling Tigers.
The new gym will also serve as a museum that will enshrine all the trophies, medals and other memorabilia of various UAAP championships the university has won throughout the years. Championship banners will also hang from the rafters of the gymnasium.
ALUMNI SUPPORT
A number of UST's former basketball stars took time out and joined the ground breaking ceremonies. They include former Glowing Goldie superstar and three-time former PBA MVP Bogs Adornado, 1995 PBA rookie-of-the-year Dennis Espino, former UAAP Most
Valuable Player (MVP) Christopher Cantonjos, former UAAP juniors MVP Gerald Francisco, Purefoods Giants player Rey Evangelista, former pro Estong Ballesteros, Red Bull players Cyrus Baguio and Jojo Duncil, who won the 2006 Finals MVP, and Welcoat superstar Nino Gelig.
Also present were UST basketball head coach Pido Jarencio, who played for UST in the early 80s and his coaching staff, Mrs. Felicitas Francisco, UAAP board member, Thomasian and Olympian Tshomlee Go who will compete in this year's Beijing Olympics.
Fr. de la Rosa, was joined in the lowering of the time capsule (which contains the plans for the building, a copy of the Academia Magazine, current newspapers, and other memorabilia of the present) by Rev. Fr. Ermito de Sagon, IPEA director; Angelo Salvador Cachero, president of the Central Student Council and Architect Casas.
Rev. Fr. Isidro C. Abano, O.P., secretary general, UST, acted as the master of ceremonies. The UST gymnasium is expected to be finished by 2010. Francis T.

Thanks pepman for the youtube link.
With the new gym, the athletes and the Salinggawi Dance Troupe can have more time/days to practice.

Homecourt advantage, mas masaya 'to! The games should be played in the gymnasium of member-schools, just like in the US and Europe.
'Di masyadong kita sa video yung loob ng gymnasium. Is this bigger than Ultra kaya?

Congrats UST on that new facility!
UST ba host ng UAAP sa 400th year celebration nila?
If so, malamang alternative venue yan for the UAAP games! Winner!
That would add another dimension sa games! :)
Pag sa Blue Eagle Gym kasi parang home court advantage lagi ng Ateneo eh. We almost always win kapag nandun yung game.

The new gym will also serve as a museum that will enshrine all the trophies, medals and other memorabilia of various UAAP championships the university has won throughout the years. Championship banners will also hang from the rafters of the gymnasium.

'Yun 'yun, eh! It's about time na magkaroon na sila ng tamang kalagyan, mini-museum ba for exhibition. :)

Arci people are really concern about the growing problem in UST's scarcity of land. As a matter of fact, the UST Archi held a symposium in 2006 (When I was graduating) to raise the awareness among Thomasians. Unfortunately Dominican fathers were not interested in the concern intiated by the Architecture department. Not a single priest attended the symposium.
What is more frustrating to know is that UST doesn't have a University planning office...so hindi planado yang pag tayo nila ng pagtayo ng building. When I asked a certain professor if they have a say on the uncontolled infrastructure developments sa UST they say wala. Even more frustrating is that they keep on building buildings sa UST na hindi namamximize yung talent ng Architecture talents and Alumni...Take for example the Tan Yankee Student Center.
I hope this new administration of Fr. Rolando dela Rosa would be more open to this idea...we boast of the best Architecture program sa Philippines and yet hindi naman natin ginagamit sa sarili nating bahay.

politics. yeah. my friend was a victim of 'politics' within the dominican system. that's another topic. to buy a lot near ust is farfetched. see, even ust's surround is crowded. in my time i don't see any vacant lots up for sale. i don't think parking during games would be a problem. based on the scale model, there are spaces allotted for parking spaces. kahit isang libong kotse pa isaksak mo siguro kasya.

yan din ang iniisip ko kasi pag sinabing indoor track diba dyan ginaganap ang athletics. so kasama dyan ang mga throw events like javelin and discuss na kailangan ng mataas ng ceiling or open air.

according to wiki: Track and field athletics, commonly known as athletics or track and field, is a collection of sports events that involve running, throwing and jumping. The name "athletics" is derived from the Greek word "athlos" meaning "contest".
based on this definition, "track" pertains to running (as in the sport track and field). athletics, on the other hand, is the general term for running, throwing (in this case javelin and discus) and jumping (long jump).
so the indoor track's purpose in the new ust gym is solely for the purpose of running/jogging without the hassle of getting soaked in the rain or being drooled at by thomasian fans.

I'm not from UST, but I guess you are correct. Didn't you had the oldest printing press building in the country right there at Espana cor Dapitan (not sure), and that old building was demolished in favor of a modern design??!!! I think it's better for the old building to be preserved in its original form as possible.
If nobody is planning the buildings, who is approving them?
Nakakafrustrate lang talaga.

^ exactly, because these venues (cuneta and ninoy) are full of lawless elements. if a place like ultra can accommodate uaap fans (car-wise, security-wise), ust can do better. with the new gym's creation, security will be tighter, unlike in other uaap venues.

@tequilaboy: Thanks for the observations.
In terms of coherence inside the campus, I think tama lang naman except for the parking area/mini-mall (this they have to re-do), TYK and the new gym. Other than that, I think only time will tell how they all add up in the future. I mean, in some other countries, you'll see the old and the new side by side without cancelling each other out, each time you'd discover something beautiful and different in a corner. I find that very charming and romantic.
I just wonder how the campus area is being planned out. They have to stop building na after the gym. Pero I heard UST's going to buy the lot in front of archi building, Espana cor P. Noval. And that they're going to put up an enclosed overpass.

Can't wait!

The TAN YAN KEE Building being a donation by Lucio Tan, UST Priests didn't have the choice to say no or yes to the architect for it was of course the choice of the Donor, Lucio Tan who will design the building. The designer was a UP Graduate...
According to a UST Archi professor when he suggest to a priest to buy parcel of vacant lots around the Vicinity of UST, the Priest immediately dismissed the idea and said that why buy land outside when we still have here inside?
I mean UST is a good school, despite of the rotten system, the stubborn administrators, and "average" students UST manages to produce the best of the best in this country. Kaya nga madami pumupukol....sayang lang kasi if they learn to maximize everything they have, work structurally organized, and most importantly if the admin learns to respect and honor its alumnni, then most likely UST will rise above the ranks in the internatinal scene.
Sayang lang kasi, if UST is just as bold and agressive as Ateneo or DLSU malamang kung gano ka okay ngayon...hindi na matatawaran in the future...

Compared with Ateneo's or DLSU's, UST's alumni relations leave much to be desired. It's one major area that the school needs to improve on.
I remember an incident before, as I was about to enter UST via Lacson gate, I was asked by the guard what I was going to do inside! Ugh, the temerity! Kelan pa naging super gated ang UST? So I showed the guard my alumni card and I told him that I was going to hear mass.
As usual magsisimba ako so I showed him my alumni card, aba, pinag log ako sa visitor's sheet! 'Di ko nga nilagay real name ko. Sinimangutan ko pa sha.
Paging Office for Alumni Relations. Please work doubly hard!

Never magiging indoor activity ang Paskuhan. Bringing it indoors would rob the event of all the excitement that it brings. Besides, if gagawin ito sa loob, paano na lang ang non-Thomasians who take part in the Paskuhan as well? Kapag walang ID, di pwede maki-pasko?
Anyway, yes, isQuash, wala talagang silbi ang alumni card na ito so when mine expired, I never thought of renewing it. Perhaps when new and substantial benefits/privileges are introduced, that's when I'll renew.

At least. multi purpose na, meron dance hall, main basketball court, at mga iba pang facilities.
Yung lumang gym, sana yung ibang part, gawing classrooms nalang.

Hi Viva! No, I have never played squash although I've always been interested to try it. Excellent cardio activity kasi. As for the indoor track, I think meron din ganyan ang Moro Lorenzo ng Ateneo.
'Di talaga maiwasan mainggit ng ibang tao eh ano? Pati pagpopondo na P500 million eh pinagdududahan. Ano ba akala nila sa UST? Poor?
@ iFly: As for the UAAP General Championship, yes indeed 10 consecutive years ng general champion ang UST. Ngayon, sino kaya ang may pinakamalakas na sports program among the UAAP schools? The UAAP is more than just basketball. So what, KUNG laglag na ang UST sa Final Four? We've won basketball championships often enough, and these were accomplished in the grandest of fashions.

Eh totoo naman eh. 'Yung sweep nung 1993, 'yung classic championship matches ng UST versus La Salle during the 90s at shempre, yung improbable yet impactful win ng UST over the highly-fancied, overly-hyped Ateneo team nung 2006 championship that reduced Doug Kramer to tears on court.
As for the old gym, it will stay where it is. Ayaw ata ipa-demolish ng Dominican priests. I just don't know what they'll do with it.

seriously, you guys are very funny.
if your school is getting a new gym, by all means get one!
we dont care if its hightech or huge, the only thing that annoy us here is the serious lack of prudence on the part of some thomasian here. you can flaunt your new gym in the proper forum which in my opinion your school portal or ust.net, that is perfectly fine but to share this to all of us, it then, appears that you people were counting your chickens way too early. construction has not even began and to add more salt to this wound, your basketball team will most likely get axed in that all important f4 race this season(ironic eh?)
now going back to your overall race, congratulations winning 10 year straight is a class act to follow.
ok kids, happy? now channel those energy on cheering for your tigers because they will most likely play their last basketball game this season within this week or early nextweek.
overall i'll give ue 80-20 chances of getting that last f4 seat.

may pool rin ba ang bagong UST gym? hehe. para magkaron na ng PE na synchronized swimming sa UST come 2011, at di malayong magkaron rin ng ganitong event sa UAAP in 15 years hehe.
sana gawing skating rink yung old gym, para mas madevelop ang talents ng pinoy sa figure skating. our country has been dominating this sport these past years, kahit wala namang snow sa pinas! hehe. salamat sa MOA at megamall. at dahil may gymnastics facilities rin sa bagong UST gym, pwede na ring magkaron ng mga PE like wushu, ang tanging medalyang ginto ng PInas sa Beijing na di naman kasali sa medal tally.. haaayy

you can flaunt your new gym in the proper forum which in my opinion your school portal or ust.net
If that's the case, then threads like "Ateneo Fans: Kamae or Portia?", "Chris Tiu - Role Model of a True "All-Business" Student-Athlete", "The Official UP FIGHTING MAROONS Thread" and the rest should be posted in their respective school forums.
Well, I am certain enough to say that some UAAP games will be held at the new gym hence, the UAAP community should care. Going back to what was previously quoted, I believe that this is in it's proper forum. Heck, if it is not, then it should have been moved/deleted a long time ago by the Moderators.

True. Like, who cares if Chris Tiu is a role model? But since he's a UAAP athlete, and some people really do care about what Chris Tiu does with his life, then the mods suppose that it's okay for the thread to be in the UAAP forum.

Not a single priest attended the symposium.
...Take for example the Tan Yankee Student Center.
I hope this new administration of Fr. Rolando dela Rosa would be more open to this idea...we boast of the best Architecture program sa Philippines and yet hindi naman natin ginagamit sa sarili nating bahay. Nakakafrustrate lang talaga.

What is more frustrating to know is that UST doesn't have a University planning office...so hindi planado yang pag tayo nila ng pagtayo ng building. When I asked a certain professor if they have a say on the uncontolled infrastructure developments sa UST they say wala. ;)

:D nevertheless that NBA 2000 All-Star Game floor is still a prized possession of Ateneo. sila lang magdedecide kung ikakabit nila or not depende siguro sa occassion. *okay*

yup maganda ang Moro Lorenzo Gym as well as yung bagong gym sa Lasalle. but for sure yung sa UST ang magiging pinakamaganda sa lahat since obviously it will be the newest with the most latest facilities and equipment when its done. sans the badtrip traffic situation in España Ave. im sure magandang venue yan for UAAP sports and events including basketball games. *okay*
@ isQuash
the Moro Lorenzo Gym was designed purely as a training facility only with a multi function basketball court, worldclass gym/weight lifting/aerobics facilities, PT/rehabilitation facilities, etc. and not as a fully functional events venue since Ateneo still has the BEG and numerous large scale covered basketball courts all over the campus. so to speak there are only minimal bleachers and seating areas in Moro Gym.

I've no idea yet about the new gym's facilities. Although I still wish may indoor pool sa loob and tennis courts, emphasis on the "s" sa tennis courts.

No SWOOSH..just to give you an idea...when the construction is fast it means the PERT-CPM is followed. UST buildings were constructed faster than the ordinary because of 24 hours labor take for example the Beato and the AMV. When I say labor, it means that people behind the construction is on call 24 hours a day, work doesn't stop including the main architect, the contractors, the project managers, the consultants, and the laborers.
Now about corruption, I bet you have not read any articles really about the said corruption. I suggest that before you comment, you must know to your self if your brain did ably analyze the subject. You must have heard it from the erratic news of ABS-CBN..sorry to drag ABS, but it's true deliver false infos most of the time. Anyway, the issue was the 3 Billion deal which was previously agreed upon by the UST Hospital admin which the priests didn't agree to because of feasibility reasons.
I studied in UST for nearly 8 years and there was not a single corruption issue ever. You will see naman kasi where the money is going, plus colleges works independently so a fraction only goes to the admin...
As for all of you guys, will you stop feeling insecure about yourselves. Just go home, study hard, be good at what you do and try to be a better person everyday.
Para sa mga UST haters jan, hehe if you will only go to the school and experience UST, malalaman nyo na malayong malayo ang iniisip nyong image from reality. When you are there everything is positive, no one is pressured to be good. In fact, kahit sangkatutak students dun I believe that it is a big part why UST remains as one of the best, if not the best in the country. We are such a mix of crowd, and you'd be surprised that you will find people there who looks up to UP, ATENEO,DLSU, people. I think the budget was too steep that it was in violation of Vatican rules. UST being a pontifical university, the previous administrators failed to get the approval of the Vatican before proceeding with the project. So when the Vatican learned about it, it had to of course, assert its authority.
There was nothing evil about the project. It's sad that people who've no real idea behind it are blabbering nonsense relentlessly.

Vol. LXXX, No.2 July 31, 2008 www.varsitarian.net Manila, Philippines
Hospital tower scrapped
THE UNIVERSITY has decided to scrap plans to build a 19-story tower to expand the UST Hospital and would build a low-rise structure instead, as efforts to settle liabilities and get new investors to finance the expansion push through.
The expansion has been scaled down but there are plans to build a huge medical laboratory and expand the number of hospital rooms to 800 in keeping with the institution’s character as a teaching hospital, UST Rector Rolando de la Rosa bared. This means the project will only need P1 billion at the most instead of the original P3-billion loan contracted by his predecessor.
De la Rosa said UST is still servicing P600 million in hospital debts which include professional fees, repairs, renovations, and new equipment, among others.
But UST will not pay P126 million in fees being demanded by the loan arranger of the syndicate of three banks — Development Bank of the Philippines, Land Bank, and Philtrust Bank — considering the P3-billion loan did not push through.
“The loan arranger is charging the University P126 million because according to them the contract is already finished,” De la Rosa told the Varsitarian following a courtesy call with the staff.
“However, I refused to pay because according to the contract, their commission is premised on the first draw down, yet, there was no draw down.”
Plans to expand and commercialize the UST Hospital were ordered reviewed by the Dominican hierarchy last year following an intra-order dispute that saw the resignations of UST Rector Fr. Ernesto Arceo, O.P., Vice Rector Juan Ponce, O.P., and the head of the Filipino Dominicans, Fr. Edmund Nantes, O.P. last September.
Dominican Master-General Carlos Azpiroz Costa had found the loan too substantial and ordered it cancelled or renegotiated, considering that UST might not be able to afford the terms.
“If ever we improve the facilities, equipment, and structure of the hospital, it must not go beyond P1 billion because based on the income statement of the hospital, it is impossible for it to pay even the interest of the P3-billion loan,” De la Rosa explained.
The redevelopment plans are still being reviewed, he said, and the University was in talks with some groups interested to invest.
“UST plans to construct a big laboratory for the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and 800 state-of-the-art rooms in the main hospital,” he said, adding that plans for a 19-story hospital building were abandoned also because it would have overshadowed the 80-year-old Main Building, whose cross-topped tower should remain the highest point in the UST campus.
The main hospital will be radically renovated to house the emergency ward, the ambulatory ward, surgical theaters and rooms that will house all the equipment, De la Rosa added.
The Rector said he had asked some doctors to invest in the hospital’s redevelopment plan but there were no takers.
“Hopefully, by this month, we will be able to finalize some agreements with the people who are interested to help us to continue the project,” De la Rosa said. N.Q. Angulo

Benavides Park clears up with trees
By John Constantine G. Cordon
EVEN trees have their “hair” done.
Called “tree pruning,” the lower branches of the trees in Benavides Park have been cut to achieve their natural form and to improve growth.
Fr. Roberto Pinto, O.P., head of the Facilities and Management Office, explained that every species of trees spread their branches toward a distinct direction, giving them their overall shape.
For instance, acacias have an umbrella-shaped top; mahoganies have branches sticking out of the trunk diagonally; narras have an elongated crown shape; and flame trees have branches slightly bowing at the end.
“When you prune trees, you have to cut them in such a way that they can achieve their forms when they grow again. You don’t just cut and cut. You have to follow the trees’ natural growth,” Pinto told the Varsitarian.
So if the once shady landscape looked all of the sudden bare and bland, this was because the trees have to be pruned. This should be done every five years, said Pinto, a former UST treasurer.
Forgotten
During his first tenure in UST in the 1990s, Pinto said he made sure the trees on campus were pruned. But when he left the University in 1997, nobody bothered to continue the practice.
As a result, UST failed to reap pruning’s more profound benefits.
For instance, pruning helps prevent trees from being uprooted during storms. After Typhoon Milenyo struck in 2006, “everybody saw the effect,” Pinto said. Some of the biggest trees in the campus were toppled.
Pinto said pruning gives trees the ability to withstand surging winds because less branches means less obstruction. Wind traffic will be smoother with less branches blocking the way, he said.
Since there are fewer branches, sunlight can reach the ground, promoting grass growth, he added.
“If you see the grass (in the Benavides Park) all dried up, it is because the tree is already blocking the sunlight, inhibiting grass growth,” Pinto explained.
A variation of pruning called “crown lifting” makes trees look taller since the lower branches are trimmed. The framework of the branches and twigs, called the crown, appears “lifted” with the lower branches removed. As a result, there’s also less obstruction for people walking at the Benavides Park.
Despite the project’s good intentions, Pinto said it still raised some eyebrows in UST.
“Of course there were comments; you cannot take that away,” Pinto said. “But if you explain to them the rationale of the tree pruning and that it has to be done, eventually, they understand.”
In the meantime, Pinto said all bushes and shrubs that will be taken away to clear the park will likely be transferred near the Father’s Residence once the Rector gives his permission.
EDITOR’S NOTE: The tree-pruning project of the Facilities Management Office at the Benavides Plaza is not part of the planned expansion of the Plaza Mayor as what was previously stated in the caption of a photo that appeared in the Aug. 31, 2008 issue of the Varsitarian. We apologize for the error.

^comment lang sana sa article. it wasn't necessary to say that Pinto was a former UST treasurer since it didn't contribute to the development of the topic of the article. wala lang.:D

^in my four years in the u, i never heard of pinto. and then here he comes now, being named as ust's head of facilities and management office, and pruning trees. so indicating pinto was ust's former treasurer sort of helps to establish who pinto is.

you call that a "backgrounder"... in stories, such backgrounds are important because it provides the readers additional information about a certain person/event... in this case, father pinto... i bet you don't know that.. :) take a look at newspapers and you will see lots of backgrounds in almost every story, granted there is still space... :)

Fr. Pinto was the UST vice rector for finance(its a revised title for UST Treasurer that for me sounds like 'banker' or moneyman) during my stay at the UST (1997-2002). Being part of the CFAD student council in 01 I had the pleasure of having courtesy calls with the then hectic scheduled cheque issuing priest, he would usually cut our meetings and approve P5M cheques in 3 mins. thats fast. he spearheaded upgrading the facilities of the campus (the P5M was for the upgrade of classroom windows of the UST pay high school). hes very generous and if you tease him for treats, kasama *** buong barkada mo libre niya. mabait yan. he is a friend of the late dr. eduardo de leon, mamas boss in pharmacy, when he ordered the trees cut in the botanical garden and trimmed the species collection and put up a P5M butterfly sanctuary that eventually disappeared after a typhoon, mama candidly had a word with him. they are friends, well so much for the 'conpendium of trees and shrubs in the UST campus' booklet, most of the plants are gone now. i just hope our campus wont end up a slab of rock along espana as it is slowly turning out to be.

Sa tingin ko mabilis lang yan matapos. Ang nagpapatagal diyan ay yung planning. Take for instance Ateneo's new on-campus dorm which took about 6 years to plan but only 7 months to construct.
