View Full Version : PONG ESCOBAL Will Join The PBA Draft After All

SBC Pong Escobal will join the 2008 PBA draft after all. The Inquirer reported Pong has submitted his papers to the PBA office to make himself elligible for the coming draft. He will graduate or end his NCAA stint this year (even with 1 more elligible playing year?). I thought he will remain amateur for at least one more year before turning pro. What made him decide to turn pro sooner?

since last year na nya this season, it's just the right time for him to apply in the draft...though he's a borderline 1st rounder....TNT team manager and SBC head coach frankie lim might draft him in the 2nd round to join aljamal...

How many first round picks does TnT have? I think they got some picks from the Taulava trade so they might have a couple of picks.

I see them using the second one on Escobal.

Nap Gutierrez? He is not in anyway connected with Pong.

Besides, who is Nap that could guarantee any player to play for the PBA? Gone are the days wherein managers can tilt anyone's chances in making it in the PBA in their favor. PBA teams are spending millions of pesos and with the current pool of players and prospects, it is all about the talent.

Everyone is entitled to his wrong opinion.

I did not know that Nap Gutierrez now picks the players in the PBA draft. Or that he can influence team management and coaches in picking players he supposedly endorses.

Anyway, showbiz na ito. Jologs na jologs ang dating pag si Nap Gutierrez and pinag uusapan.

^Eto na lang ang isipin nyo ha?

Escobal has another year of eligbility left. Do you think he will forego that eligibility if there is no assurance from PBA team/s that he will be drafted early in the first round?

If you ask Pong if he will still play for the RLs next year, he won't say: I will no longer play next year because I am no longer eligible.

His usual answer is: I will no longer play for the RLs next year because I will join the draft this year.

Phone Pals eyeing 2nd Fil-Am tyro

By Jasmine W. Payo

Close this MANILA, Philippines—A day after Welcoat expressed its intention to make Gabe Norwood the No. 1 rookie pick, Talk ’N Text also eyed another Filipino-American as its second choice in the PBA draft set on Aug. 31 at Market! Market! mall in Taguig City.

“We’ll get whoever Welcoat doesn’t pick,” said team manager Frankie Lim after the Phone Pals earned the second and fourth selections.

The Phone Pals are similarly looking at Norwood—the versatile 6-foot-5 guard who starred for the Philippine team—and Jared Dillinger, a 6-foot Fil-Am point guard playing for the Pampanga Buddies in the Liga Pilipinas.

“There are still so many what-ifs, what if Norwood and Dillinger don’t make it,” said Lim of their top two choices, who have yet to complete the draft requirements for foreign players with Filipino roots.

“We have our top five. We’re also looking at (Jason) Castro, (Solomon) Mercado and Pong (Escobal). They’re all 1-2 guards. Even if we need a big man, there’s no big man in the lineup. So maybe we’ll go for a 3 spot (small forward) and a point guard.”

Magnolia got the third and eighth picks, while Alaska earned the No. 5 selection

Purefoods will either choose sixth or seventh, depending on Air21’s fate in the ongoing Smart Fiesta Conference finals against Barangay Ginebra.

Red Bull picks ninth, followed by Philippine Cup champion Sta. Lucia Realty

i think the theory that pong, who just turned 23, is joining the draft this year and not later, because he is assured of being picked high, has some credence.

joel orellana wrote today in business mirror:

Picking second are the Phone Pals, who have been very vocal in picking another Filipino-American cager in Jared Dillinger, also a six-foot-five guard from the University of Hawaii ang currently playing for the Pampanga Buddies in Liga Pilipinas.

Talk 'N Text is also picking at No. 4 and word spread around the league that the Pals are eyeing San Beda guard Pong Escobal to be their fourth selection overall.

Pong will not play anymore for RL. Since he is not anymore eligible to play. If you will watch the SBC-JRU post-game interview we had with Coach Frankie Lim, he said there that this year's ending will be a good send-off for Pong who will turn pro next year. So that's it.
Magpapadraft na si Pong... coming from Coach Frankie himself. I don't think there should be hush hush about it na... Its final na. The team would still be intact since it will only be Pong and Sam who's leaving the RL.

hmm... Talk N'Text has Jimmy Alapag.. as a player, Castro is definitely a better catch than Pong, but if we evaluate the roster of the Phone Pals, Pong will be more effective

aljamal still has a year to prove himself and perhaps grow an inch or two hehe.. he's too undersized for his position in the PBA.
