I saw the link of the first FEU Tamaraws thread and found out that it was started way back 2002. Now, after 6 years of existence here in pinoyexchange, the maximum post limitation of 5000 has been reached, forcing us to create this new thread. Nice job guys!

Tamaraws rally from 16-point deficit to beat UST

FOR 30 MINUTES, all seemed bleak and gloomy for Far Eastern University.

An inspired fourth quarter fightback, however, gave the Tamaraws the much-needed momentum they needed to force overtime and complete a stunning 74-69 win against University of Santo Tomas in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament last August 17, 2008 at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Down by as many as 16 points, FEU leaned on the heroics of Reil Cervantes and JR Cawaling, who came through with crucial baskets, as well as Aldrech Ramos’ crucial lay-up, to extend the game for an extra five minutes.

UST’s Dylan Ababou could have given UST a hold on the game in regulation, but muffed both his charities with 10.2 ticks left in regulation.

In overtime, Cervantes gave the Tamaraws their first taste of the lead, 64-62, since the first quarter. After a botched offensive thrust by UST, Barroca then scored on a
putback to make it 66-62.

After Mark Canlas put the Growling Tigers to within two, 64-66, Cawaling hit a banked shot to restore FEU’s lead to four, 68-64, inside the two-minute mark
of overtime.

UST’s Khasim Mirza unloaded a trey to trim the Tamaraw lead to three, 69-72. The triple was UST’s first field goal since the 7:25 mark of the fourth period, which incidentally was its only conversion in the entire quarter.

Cervantes’ two free throws sealed the win for FEU, which now sports a 7-3 win-loss card. The 6’5” center led the Tams with 20 points and nine boards.

It was another emotional win for FEU, which fell behind 35-51 in the third period.

“My players refused to quit,” said FEU coach Glen Capacio, who was known in the pros for his defense. “What can I say, they’ve got a big heart. We were down 13 to 15 points in the fourth quarter. Luckily, they played well and we stopped them.”

With the loss, the Growling Tigers dropped to 4-6, and two full games behind fourth-running University of the East.

The Tamaraws unloaded a stinging 21-7 run, which was capped off by a baseline getaway move by Cervantes inside the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter to pull his team closer at 56-58.

Guard Benedict Fernandez, who scored just a single point in the first half, served as the catalyst of the Morayta-based side’s furious rally. After missing his first seven shots, Fernandez went 5-for-6 in the second half before leaving the game due to a serious case of cramps.

A steal by Aldrich Ramos and a completed lay-up tied the game for the first time since the second quarter at 60-all, sending the game into overtime.

UST center Jervy Cruz scored a career-high 30 points to pace UST, which now faces the daunting task of having to win its remaining four games to have a realistic shot at entering the Final Four, a feat it achieved last season ironically at the expense of the Tamaraws.

Tams’ Baracael reports back for duty vs Bulldogs?

Mac Baracael will suit up for Far Eastern University today just a month after he took a near-fatal shot to the back as he emerged from a team practice.

Believe it or not, Baracael is ready to play, and according to head coach Glenn Capacio, the FEU superstar has been attending practice the last few days.

“He’s been practicing lately, and has undergone some conditioning. Definitely, he will be there today wearing his uniform,” said Capacio.

“I hope I can field him even for a minute or two, and give him back the feel of the game. He wants to play and the doctors have given him the go.”

With Baracael around, the Tamaraws are once again expected to play with a lot of emotion when they face the NU Bulldogs at 2 p.m.

FEU, tied for second with La Salle at 8-3, will surely draw inspiration from Baracael. FEU fans that will troop to the Araneta Coliseum today will surely be glad to see him back on the bench.

Nothing concrete has come out of the investigation – whether or not the shooting is basketball-related.

“He’s back in the team,” Capacio added. “He’ll sit on the bench, maybe play some minimal minutes. I told him we just need his presence there if we should make it to the Final Four,” he added.

The Tams, however, will continue to miss rookie Robert Kave of Papua New Guinea who was with Baracael when the latter was shot as he stepped out of the school campus following a team practice.

Kave said he couldn’t handle the experience and had gone home to Papua New Guinea.

FEU lost to NU, 61-69, in the first round.

La Salle takes on Santo Tomas in the other game at 4 p.m. with the Green Archers seeing action minus head coach Franz Pumaren who is with the RP Youth Team in Tehran.
