Thank God na nakapasa ako in just one take (medyo matagal na rin iyon).

1,300 lawyers pass bar exams

By Norman Bordadora
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Posted date: April 03, 2009

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE) Some 1,300 law graduates passed the 2008 bar examinations, Philippine Daily Inquirer and INQUIRER.net sources at the Supreme Court said Friday.

The figure is more than 20 percent of the 6,364 who took and finished the four-Sunday examinations in September last year.

INQUIRER.net sources who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to talk to media said the passing rate was also lowered from 75 percent to 72 percent in the subjects that were taken but was not clear whether this was applicable to all or some of them.

In the 2007 bar examinations, 1,289 out of 5,626 examinees passed for a passing percentage of 22.91 percent.

The highest passing percentage since 2000 was the 31.61 percent posted in 2004.

Formal announcement of the results is expected at 4 p.m. on Friday shortly after the committee on the bar examinations finishes “decoding” the answer sheets and matches them with the names of the examinees.

1,310 pass bar exams; San Sebastian stude is topnotcher
04/03/2009 | 08:19 PM

MANILA, Philippines — Judy Lardizabal, a law student from the San Sebastian College, emerged on top of the 1,310 examinees who passed the 2008 bar examinations.

The exam has a 20.58 percent passing rate, lower than last year’s 22.91 percent. A record 6,364 examinees from 109 law schools took the test in September 2008.

Lardizabal who got a score of 85.70 percent is followed by Mylene Amerol Macumbal of the Mindanao State University with 85.65 percent.

Third is Oliver Baclay Jr of the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) with 85.6 percent, followed by Majesty Eve Jala of Ateneo; Elizabeth Lizeralde of the University of the Philippines; Michael Macapagal also of UP.

Denisse Dy and April Love Regis both from ADMU are tied at seventh place, followed by Kristine Joy Tan of ADMU.

Shirley Velasquez of UP and Gian Jacob of San Beda are on the ninth spot. Vanessa Raymundo of San Beda Collage completes the top 10.

The Supreme Court earlier said the release of the results would be at 4 p.m. but later moved it to 6 p.m. “Nagde-decode pa kasi at after the decoding, immediately after, ilalabas na natin iyan [We still have to decode the results before releasing them]," SC spokesman Midas Marquez said earlier in the afternoon.

The Philippine Bar Examination is the national licensure exam for the admission to the practice of law. The 2008 bar examinations committee was chaired by Associate Justice Dante Tinga

The list of names is also displayed at the Supreme Court premises and was flashed on wide screens at the SC front yard near the Padre Faura entrance.

For people who wanted to spare themselves from braving through the thick crowd that would flock to the Supreme Court building in Manila, the court has put up since Friday noon a Web site where the names of the passers are displayed.

However, Dave Uy III, one of the thousands of hopefuls, seeing whether or not his name is on the coveted list was more important.

“Gusto ko ako talaga ako makakakita ng name ko talaga. Ito na. Pinaghirapan ko po ito [I want to see my name myself. This is it. I’ve worked hard for this]," he told GMA News.

Even Dory Panis trooped to the Supreme Court to view the results – even if she was not an examinee. “Hindi makapunta anak ko. Natatakot siya at stressed na stressed. Magdamag siyang hindi makatulog [My child – who does not want to go here – is so stressed, afraid, and was unable to sleep]."

108th time

The 108th bar exams were conducted over four Sundays of September 2008 at the De La Salle University in Taft Avenue, Manila.

In determining the average, subjects in the examinations are given the following relative weights: Political and International Law, 15%; Labor and Social Legislation, 10%; Civil Law, 15%; Taxation, 10%; Mercantile Law, 15%; Criminal Law, 10%; Remedial Law, 20%; and Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises, 5%, for a total of 100%.

The 2008 bar exams marked the fourth time that the 'five-strike' rule was observed.

The rule limits to five the maximum number of times a candidate may take what is reputed to be the most grueling government-administered test, was implemented.

A law program which is the envy of all lawschools in the philippines. The first two topnothchers(congrats to them) are sheer individual talent, but we shall see kung gaano kataas ang passing percentage ng mga schools nila in the coming days. Pero iba pa rin yung ADMU SBC UP lawschools. Baste is a promising lawschool after hiring the SBC "tempest" profs, these profs are getting the last laugh now .

It hardly matters.

You're right KD. Balibaliktarin man ang result, it's still Baste's honor not any other school.

We should learn to give credit where it's due. Just like last year, Ateneo's Ona was an undergraduate of UP thus some people from UP were claiming that it was still UP. But then again, UP's 2nd placer was an undergraduate of Ateneo too.

Just for the record, the topnotcher this year did recognize Baste as the school that really helped her get through. She didn't say it was UP that made her top the exams.

sorry but the truth is, when it comes to the Bar Exams, a topnotcher's undergrad school rarely matter.

unless the topnotcher is an undergrad and law proper almunus/alumna of the same university like Atty. Arlene Maneja, 2002 bar exam 1st placer, who obtained latin honor of MCL for both AB-Legal Mgmt. and Llb. degrees in UST. :D

anyways, in race for prestige and honor amongst the Big 3 LS's, AdMU simply owned UP-D and SBC in the 2008 Bar Exams. :bop:

pero the real winners were SSC-R and MSU! *okay*

last year UP BAA alumna! sana nag-stay na lang sila sa UP para 3 years in a row ang topnotcher is from UP!;)

Ganda ng sinabi ni bar topnotcher regarding her constant prayer prior to the exams. Sabi nya she made a deal with the Lord that if He makes her pass the bar, she will become a good lawyer at hindi sya tutulad sa iba [yung masasama].

God bless you more! May the good Lord guide you always. Same prayers kay bar 2nd placer who hails from Iligan [MSU's first ever topnotcher].

^ for the top notchers, yes. but i wtill have to see the passing percentage of those mentioned schools compared with the big 3.

if you haven't noticed, topnotchers are conclusively not the gauge for a school to be considered the best. the passing percentage is.

Pare pareho lang ang turo sa mga law schools..fact of the matter is faculty members of the big 3 lawschools are also teaching in other lawschools. example. judge pimentel teaches at ateneo, USt and arellano.same goes with atty. tony bautista, who teaches law in UP, Ateneo and UE. Prof/dean Agabin teaches law in UP and lyceum.

most of all. having a topnotcher in the bar is not a guage on how good a lawschool is. topnotchers are more on the individual's capacity , abilities, and intellectual prowess.the safest guage is the passing percentage of the passers in a given lawschool. for the past ten years these lawschools are SBC ATENEO and UP.

Binasa mo ba 'yung quotation?

I read from somewhere that the no.3 placer was a UPLB Chem graduate.

The topnotcher's statement hits it right on the money - "Preparation for the bar begins on the very 1st day in lawschool".

As for those taking the 2009 exams, my prayers are with you. The upcoming bar would be much harder unlike before because there would be 2 examiners per subject.

Here's an excerpt from theinquirer...

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/b.../ nation/view/20090404-197943/Bar-topnotcher-didnt-think- she-would-pass

She smiled remembering that as early as her third year in law school at San Sebastian, a professor predicted she would top the bar.

Lardizabal showed the Inquirer a Remedial Law midterm examination she had taken during her 3rd year for the second semester of school year 2006 to 2007, where she scored 99 because the professor believed “there is no such thing as a 100 score.”

Law school dean Willard B. Riano had written in the back of the cover page: “No mistake? You’ll top the bar! Work… work-read… Never stop!!! Excellent.”

That remark proved prophetic.

i guess, AdMU will now over take SBC sa 1st place ng law school ranking.

sa 2007 bar, mahigpit ang labanan nila and both of them were in the 90%+ passing rate, SBC edged out AdMU by a few points to claim the top spot.

well, i dunno about UPD...nag-release na ba sila?

2. San Beda - 80%
3. FEU - DLSU (Less than 30 ang kumuha sa kanila ha)- 77%
4. UP (with 120 takers, around 25-30+ casualties) - 73%

galing peyups ba yan? kung 30 casulaties out of 120, dapat 75%. kung 25, dapat 79%

galing peyups ba yan? kung 30 casulaties out of 120, dapat 75%. kung 25, dapat 79%

Pero ang figure na binigay sa akin, UP has 21 casualties, out of 122 takers... 101/122 = 82.78%.

So therefore, marami pa palang wala sa list (so may 12 na nadagdag na pumasa from the 101 figure).
Kaso wala namang nabanggit kung ilan lahat ang nag-take...*peace*

So kung nadagdagan ng 12 ang list (malamang yung mga retakers ito for 2 or more years na), there are at least 134 takers.

I think FEU administers the JD side of the dual degree so if you have to assign credit, it should be to FEU. :D

I think for the FEU-DLSU (okay, maybe DLSU-FEU) MBA-JD Program, BOTH school should be recognized equally. I mean, it wouldn't be an MBA-JD program without DLSU's MBA, and same goes with FEU's Institute of Law.

Off-topic:

According to DLSU's website, their College of Law is now open. But according to the joint statement of both school, the MBA-JD program will still be offered through this institutional partnership. Their reason is the newly-opened DLSU College of Law will focus more on human rights and environmental law. After all, FEU has its own MBA, right?

Ang UP College of Social Work and Community Development, at ang buong UP system ay masayang masaya dahil ang BAr Topnotcher ngayon ay isang UP ALUMNA.
'Win' by association. Pwede nadin. :bop:

The topnotcher acknowledged that her undergrad course in UP became her motivation to pursue law.

“My family is not that well-off. My mother runs a mini grocery at a marketplace. My father (Deodato) is a tricycle driver. After I graduated from UP (University of the Philippines), they helped me with my tuition and I had to work more so I could enroll at law school,” she told the Inquirer.

Judy is the middle child in a brood of three. She recalled that her desire to be a lawyer came only while she was doing her on-the-job training for her undergraduate course in social work at UP.
“We helped non-government organizations in cases of battered and abused women. We handled the psycho-social aspect of the cases and had to turn the victims over to lawyers for the legal aspect,” Lardizabal said.

wala namang sinabi dinidiscredit ang SSCR, pero syempre the drive to pursue law was further developed sa undergrad nya.

Ronaldo Zamora who went on to top the Bar:):):) 3rd placer naman si Senator Frank Drilon!!!

for me, mas importante ang TOR at if may latin honors ka. Look at Dionne Marie Sanchez, UP Law (magna) valedictorian in 2007. di nga sya nag top 10. to think na cum laude lang sila January Sanchez at Joan de Venecia!!! Sanchez was part of UP-Jean Pictet Moot Court team in 2006.

i guess classmates sila Sanchez at Bar #1 Atty. Ona sa UP BAA (Class of 2002). Sanchez was summa, Ona was cum laude.

it was advertised in the Inquirer today that Arellano Law has 60 new lawyers. Congrats!!!

Please do not compare UST's alumni with Bedans... UST is a university while San Beda is only a college. Nevertheless, the latter vie for "quality" instead of "quantity"

1/1 = 100%. :P

around 50 candidates each year

What's happening to the UST Faculty of Civil Law?

Ok naman, nakapag produce na ng 6 Chief Justices and 4 Presidents of the Philippine Republic.

Teka. Ano na ba ang nangyari sa Pilipinas after having 6 justices and 4 presidents who studied in UST?

And this 6 justices and 4 presidents that you are talking about are irrelevant to this thread. Ang pinaguusapan dito is performance in the Bar exams.

Ok, given na ang recorded topnotchers begin only the late 1920s pero ganun pa man mas kaunti pa rin ang topnotchers ng UST compared to "younger" lawschools such as Ateneo, UP and San Beda. Ang saklap pa nito baka San Sebastian will be a better lawschool than UST.

Not only that it would seem that the passing percentage in UST is quite low compared even to provincial schools such as ateneo de davao and University of San Carlos. Kung tutuusin mas nakakgulat pa ang passing percentage ng arellano dahil kahit meron syang reputation as school for dropouts of UP, SBC and ATENEO ah it has a fairly good passing percentage na kapantay lang halos ng UST.
Kaya nga ang tanong ko is what is happening to UST??

tanggapin nyo na na there is something wrong with the system of running the lawschool there in UST.

By the way Roberto Concepcion, a beloved UST Law alumnus, is also a Bedan...check his profile in the Supreme Court web site. Kung meron law school ang SBC during his time he could have enrolled in SBC.

SBC's contribution to the legal profession?? dami....it will need another thread to discuss it.

UST's case only proves that you don't have to be a topnotcher in the bar exams or be a graduate of AdMU, SBC or UP to be able to provide significant contributions or achieve remarkable feats worthy of being written down in our country's history.

Hi tupangusa,

Maybe there is a problem in the system or curriculum. But I'm sure the UST Faculty of Civil Law is aware of this problems and maybe already doing corrective measures to change the trend. But from what I know it has has certainly improved as compared with the passing rates during the 1990's. Usually it ranks no 4 in the category with 30 or more examinees (metro manila). :)

What contributions are you talking about?

being appointed in a judicial office or being elected as the chief executive involves several factors. money, power, influence and the list goes on and on. the system now is the same as before.

don't get me wrong I have nothing against UST. I'm just alarmed at what is happening to them. I dont want to see in the cellars specially in the BAR exams. Mind you in other courses ,UST is one of if not, the best school..(medicine, architecture, philo, accountancy)..Law lang talga sa tingin ko ang may problema

Here is the bar performance of San Beda from the beginning of time...

FYI, I was a student of San Beda from elementary to college & I am now working as an accountant here in NY. My brother is a lawyer there as well, but he is from Ateneo. Throughout my stay in San Beda, I had seen as many as 500 to 600 students in first year college of law BUT ONLY around or between 50 - 120 survive and reach 4th year. In fact, some of my HS classmates were kicked out in their college of law years and attended either Arellano or Baste, where they finally became full-pledged lawyers. Last year's 6th placer from San Sebastian (Karen Canlulas) also attended San Beda College in her earlier years.

Now let's go back to the topic of 2008 Bar Exams and stop lambasting San Beda because like I said, I wouldn't argue that UST goes for quantity, San Beda goes for quality. It is a fact.

kailangan talaga study hard, perseverance at common sense sabi nga d b when you enter law school you are now preparing yourself to take the BAR siguro gnun ang mindset ng mga BAR TOPNOTCHERS

but to all THOMASIAN Barristers who will take the 2009 BAR EXAM take this as a challenge to prove to us that you can produce another TOP NOTCHER.

We cannot deny if you have more BAR TOP NOTCHERS the more people will look up to your schools

Nice numbers, meaningless to our discussion, though, because they do not provide the figures being asked for.

Again, burden of proof lies with you.
