I'd like to know more about Chinese traditions especially here in the Philippines. Mga Chinese PEXers, info naman! :)

Like what is the significance of "8"? Good luck daw itong number na ito.

If you know of any other stuff, please feel free to post! Thanks! :)

what specifically about chinese traditions?

anyways, 8 is very lucky they say coz in cantonese, 8 is "pat" or as others say in fukien, "huat" meaning 'to grow' or something to that effect :)

I learned that:

** Red means happy. If someone's birthday, he/she should wear something red.

** Eat noodles during your birthdays and chinese new year. It means long life. Even if it is not your birthday, you should eat noodles for sake of the celebrant.

** Never wear black (whether black shirt or polo) if you are going to visit a Chinese friend/family. Black means bad luck, bad fortune.

Don't you see that as unfair? Or have you accepted the fact na? Just asking.

When a family/relative dies... wear white, don't wear light colors, dapat daw dark colors. Tapos for example, nasa chapel "A" yung patay na family/relative, tapos kilala mo yung patay sa chapel "B", bawal ka raw pumasok sa "B", this I can't understand why...

Wear polka dots during new year's eve for prosperity and money, as well as display round fruits.

The elders give red envelopes with money inside to their grandchildren.

Grandparents give their eldest male grandchild a real gold ring with the chinese word "hok" which means Good Luck at their middle teenage years, like when they're 16 or 17 yrs. old.

Giving of Jade. Kasi chinese believe that swerte daw if someone GIVES you a Jade ring/bracelet/earings and etc...

I understand that it's really strict on your side. Sana magbago yung perception ng mga Chinese. There are a lot of good Pinoys out there naman eh. ;)

I have a Chinese boyfriend and during Chinese New Years, hindi siya puwedeng bumili ng sapatos, get his haircut, at kung ano-ano pa. He said it has to do with the chinese translation of the words and it generally relates to bad luck.

The funniest thing is that during Chinese New Years, they fill they're house with tangerines! In all the rooms of the house, pati narin yung car niya, there's one or two tangerines! They have to keep it for one month daw. It's funny and crazy at the same time, pero my bf follows it anyway kasi nga very traditional ang grandparents niya.

As for dating, they really don't care whether he dates a Chinese or not. Even if pure Chinese sila, they accept anyone who's good for their son...which is really good for me! =P

kasi raw pag nakatayo yung chopstix parang kandila na nakatirik sa libingan. it's the same as having 111 on your plate number parang kandila nga daw.

hmmm may nakalimutan pa ba sila???...

hmmm.... bawal ang 6 na ulam sa isang table.. kasi patay lang daw ang sineserve ng ganun...

hmmm... pag may nangyari sayong kamalasan dapat mag pagupit ka para may tumubong bago...

hmmm... mas maganda kung ang napipili mong number is compose of 2,8 not 4

hmmm... wala na ako maisip ngayon eheheh next tym ulit

Free Agent: i noticed na super interested ka sa chinese traditions. y, wats with it? :girl: people say that chinese culture is very rich, but sometimes these traditions are the ones that comes in the way of some people's happiness. like for example nga ndi pwedeng magkarelasyon ang chinese sa filipinos and all that crap. they have to think na parepareho lang naman tayong mga tao e. it doesnt make any difference if u come from another race. i guess may setbacks din for everything.
anyway, one thing that i can say is that the chinese really sticks to their traditions, no matter how "old" and how "nakakainis". sori nagbuhos lang po ng sama ng loob. :| hehe

hey free agent! i thought you gave up on her? its a good thing you didnt... good luck with the courtship!

chinese traditions:
- if a relative dies you cant go out to parties or wear bright clothing for 49 days
- the relatives of a person who just died must wear white
- wear red if your relative has a birthday
- chinese coins (the round one with the square center) are considered lucky
- the coins tossed during a house blessing shouldn't be spent

I'm still on a tug-of-war between giving up and continuing but as of now, I'm just taking time and setting priorities straight. That's why I'm concentrating on my studies first. It's all just a matter of priorities. :)
