View Full Version : who's into japanese art?

Gollum
Jan 28, 2001, 01:43 PM
i'm an avid fan of japanese art, from prints, to works of literature to origami to anime and manga... i could go on and on. i even took an elective on japanese art sa sobrang interest ko.

i'm not an expert ha! gusto ko lang talaga sila.

so if you like akira kurosawa, or if you just want to rave about jap art... just post them here.

ps: did you know that the french impressionist claude monet was so taken with japanese prints that he collected them and actually made copies of the prints. he was so impressed with the way the japanese juxtaposed colors, that he was, in the end, undeniably influenced by them in his artworks. so it can be safely said that the impressionist movement in europe was influenced by japanese art. ok ba? ;)

wow, that's really cool! i like japanese art, too, from tradition to modern. i don't know, there's just something about them that makes them totally one-of-a-kind in their own right, that's what i love the most about them.

do you know the magazine pacific friend? i really missed reading that during my high school days. i got to know a lot of stuff regarding contemporary japanese culture & everything that's happening there. there's even this haiku section where you can even make haikus without following the traditonal style. i really miss that.

just ORIGAMI. i don't know. i'm just fascinated with it for the longest time, ever since i was young. i used to download origami stuff on the net but it's very limited. and darn those origami books on the stores. they're so expensive!

thank you ako_ay_cute and rors for replying. :D:D

hey rors, do you know where to find origami on the web? i'm a folder too, although not an expert one. most of the stuff i find on the web are useless.... :(

hey gollum! i forgot the exact url's but you can just surf for "origami" and lots of links would come out. the stuff i just found were mostly letter folding and paper box folding. not really exciting.:)

i'm looking for those origami that require intricate folding. you know, the ones which are more challenging and fulfilling. would you know where i can find them?

I like Japanese papercuts...

Yung origami too, I like it,.... lalo na flowers. Rors and Gollum, I usually get instructions from books Yung isang time, nasa CCP library ako and they had a book there tapos pinaphotocopy ko nalang... I don't know if they have more now.
Here at home, I have those basic -intermediate books with the usual flowers and animals . Meron din akong how to make gift boxes, pero di ko pa sinusubukan. I got it on sale sa NBS...you should try their bargain bins pag sale season. My brother has the Kusudama origami book.. yung origami na modular type that you interlock the pieces and make lanterns. He also has one where you can make insects pero ang hirap!!!! You have to fold the paper by 16ths or 32s....arghh, tapos kandaloko-loko na yung creasing ko. =)

that's the very kind of challenge i'm looking for! oh, i wanna get my hands on them! where can i get those books? there are no signs of sale yet on national bookstore.

Me! Me! Me! I'm into Japanese art too! As long as I can remember, even in my elementary days I would constantly borrow the big book about Japanese myths and it was full of pictures featuring their sculpture, prints and what-have-yous. I like their minimalism and the way they go about it. Japanese art... I like! *okay*

Gollum

yehey! ang dami na natin...

i used to know how to fold a dinosaur... sadly, i forgot how to... the only thing that i can remember to fold without consulting a book is a LILY. :)

misa: swerte naman ng utol mo! i'll check out national na din... thanks.

rors: i tried them kaya lang ang hirap eh. most of them don't have guides for their folding symbols.... kakainis!!

kartoonista: i knew you would would pop up here someday... hehehe...

chingco: i learned somewhere that they they even use rice stalks as brushes. it gives the paintings a feeling of immediacy, like a moment stuck in time.

who'd have thought this was a van gogh?

as it turns out, van gogh was also into japanese art. this painting was done during his japanese period.

i quote from the van gogh gallery (http://www.vangoghgallery.com/painting/overview.htm) website:

Japonaseries: The period in which Vincent painted in the traditional Japanese fashion is brief, but nonetheless extremely interesting. "Japonisme" was an influence that was particularly popular in the mid to late 19th century. Vincent was intrigued by the Japanese prints available to him at the time and wrote to Theo (his brother):

"My studio is not so bad, especially as I have pinned a lot of little Japanese prints on the wall, which amuse me very much."

rors, gollum and other origamiheads.... my bro bought the origami insects books sa states.... the rest that I mentioned, dito sa pinas binili...sa either National or Goodwill. I have the boof "Encyclopedia of Origami and Papercraft Techniques"... hardcover, medyo konti lang yung projects na may instructions... sa NBS ko binili yon, P400 something lang DATI...... and I bought that book when I was a soph in High school... may mahirap don... how to make a train caboose... ang hiiiiirapppppp. I'll see if I can find it baka I can mail it or something.

I think caboose yata tawag don! Anyway, basta the instructions is for a train... the part na kung san may coal engine thingie.... kaya may mini chimney...... one piece of paper lang to ha, if i'm not mistaken.... kasi diba may mga origami purists who perish the thought of cutting the figure or adding another oiece of paper to create attachments (like for animal legs, anttenae, etc.). Anyway, first, I'm going to look for the books, baka pwede ko iphotocopy and you guys just send SASEs, mwehehe. =)

Me too. From the Zen Garden to Anime.

To me the Japanese Samurai sword is one of the finest pieces of Japanese Art. Sleek, curved, and sharp. It's amazing that they fold the metal hundreds of times to work out the impurities.

Second is the way they draw machines in anime. My gawd! the best part of Final Fantasy the movie was the machines.

hey, guys! check out this webpage: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~pd1y-krnm/indexe.html

i discovered this site w/ my sis a few years ago while searching for modern japanese artworks here in the net. i really find the artworks here very pretty, somewhat a simply whimsically poetic feel (to me). trip ko talaga ang mga ganitong painting. what do you guys think?

is it just me or is everything japanese so... artistic? take their tea ceremony, for example. to other peoples, it's just a menial task. but the japanese have ingrained it into their culture, even giving it a religious air. hay naku... bakit kaya?

kaya lang ngayon, i have this impression that the japanese are wasting their culture. parang mga pinoy din na masyadong pa-western.

sayang, di ba?

anyway...

(hehehe. no offense! :sweatdrop2: )

i can relate to some of the things you said ako_ay_cute. i remember that show where they feature the new trends in japan sa channel 9. i can still remember the guy who used to do the voice over for that show. pinapanood namin lagi yun ng mga kapatid ko.

although i can't say that i'm as much into japanese culture as the rest of you guys are, i am fascinated with how they manage to keep their traditions alive amidst all the new things their country is exposed to. japan is a country of contrasts; where one can see towering skyscrapers next to magnificent shrines. the people themselves are just as fascinating. i consider myself lucky that i was able to visit the country a few years ago.

medyo off topic na nga...:D anyway...ganda nung pinost mong van gogh, gollum. may konting class pala underneath that jologs exterior!:lol::lol:

if you haven't been here yet, it's a good site to visit if you're quite new to traditional japanese art. (nice artworks here, by the way. :) )

here's also another one:

http://www.suminagashi.com/

though i haven't visited this site completely yet, as of now (due to the fact that i'm running out of time), it's quite a beautiful & promising site full of uniquely nice & pretty artworks (since this form of art is very new to me). it's also basically a site on paper marbling. :)

ako_ay_cute: i checked out the links you posted. nice work...

may ipo-point out lang ako. see these two pictures...

http://www.e-asai.com/ukiyoe1.gif
http://www.e-asai.com/ukiyoe4.gif

the first one is by the artist utamoro. the second one is by kuniyoshi. japanese artists, in rendering people, usually differentiated the aristocrats from the peasants with their facial features.

notice in the first picture how utamoro barely gave the woman any facial lines. her eyes are just two slits, her mouth almost just a dab of ink and her ears are very tiny. these are the marks of the aristocrat.

as opposed to the first picture, you can see in the second one that the man has very large eyes, with an almost comic expression, thanks to numerous facial lines (actually the picture is a compound work, the face of the man is made up of a set of different people curled up in different positions around his face).

in japanese art, rich people are devoid of expression, while the peasants are happy, coarse characters. weird ba?

more next time... :D:D

wow! galing nito, a? andami ko ngayong natutunan! :D actually, hindi nga weird, e. in fact, i find it very cool & intriguing. it's very interesting! :) ang galing nga noong 2nd pic, e, lalo na kung paano nakagawa ng isang portrait ng isang mama sa puro mga katawan ng tao in diffrent positions. isa talaga 'to sa mga pinaka-unique na traditional japanese artworks na nakita ko sa buong buhay ko, besides this one from hokusai:

http://www.e-asai.com/ukiyoe2.gif

:)

:sweatdrop2: guess i really haven't seen the whole world completely, huh? oh well. thanks sa additional trivia there. may bago na naman akong natutunan! :D

hi everyone. i'm back... (sorry, i haven't been logging on much these days)

anyway, to shadowboxer , yes, i think there is something i can recommend (if you can find it in artbooks that is)...

there's this series of scrolls done by an artist (his name escapes me at the moment) about punishments imposed on sinners in hell.
para shang inferno (by dante), portraying punishments on specific sins. halimbawa, kung chismoso/ chismosa ka, puputulan ka ng dila, etc... i'll see if i can research those scrolls.

meron din woodcuts portraying different sex positions, ala-kama sutra (hmmmm...).

well... most of the time it's anime and manga... pero kasama na rin doon ang origami and martial arts. naalala ko dati ng bata ako na gusto kong maging samurai/ninja. :glee:

btw, can anyone recommend any good books on japanese culture, arts and history. not the technical ones, more of the easy reading lang. tia! :)

anyway, i've had my mind set on having a Japanese-style home in the future... with a cute little garden sa loob ng bahay, tapos yung garden sa labas, with small pagodas, a pool of gaily-colored carp, neat grass, pretty lanterns, with Japanese inscriptions on small banners & posts stating good luck & general inspiration *sigh* - basta, get nyo na *****. :D with neat furniture - a gentle miscellany of traditional Japanese stuff jumbled with modern-day fare. tapos yung colors along the place are ebony, crimson, pink, ivory - among others. tapos tiny fans & quaint umbrellas abound as decoration... along with a buncha swords in collection!!!!

wow interesting thread! :wow2:

I'm also fascinated with Japanese art, in fact, Japanese culture in general! :jap:

I like traditional Japanese art like their prints, paintings, pottery and most ecpecially their calligraphy...their philosophy on the order of things (Zen) and how this is reflected even in their own homes ( i wanna make my own zen fountain!)
I dunno if it is just me but sometimes I associate their art with that of Mondrian and the contrasting principles of chiaroscuro

...also in martial arts and with that, their techniques and discipline, the likes of the samurai and the ninja...
the samurai sword, the art involved in the forging of the blade and it's other parts and ornamentations

I would really like to own my set of samurai swords, at least a katana, nodachi and sakabatou :D

in modern Japanese art, I like Anime, it's a different genre of animation altogether, I always prefer japanese dubbed with eng. subtitles, coz I like their language as well. My thesis in college was all about anime! ask moon_sabine, she'll tell you

also I'm into live action movies like Akira Kurosawa's Yojimbo and Dreams, also the series Lone Wolf and Cub *okay*

I've been trying to learn Japanese by watching subtitled anime and self-study through books. I actually wanna enroll in a class but right now I don't have time :( and i dunno where I can get them.

My sis and I are hooked up on this show in NHK entitled Hojo Tokimune. It's purely in Japanese so we just understand by seeing what's happening, reading their facial expressions and by some of the words we understand. Does anybody here watch it too? It shows every Sunday 7:30 pm with reruns on Saturday at 12:00 pm and 1:00 am. Some of the actors are actually cute (Tokimune, Tokisuke and Munema) :inluv:

Count me in Sacrosanct. I am also into anime/manga and I am into drawing as well. I simply love their rendition of the characters as well as the background.

Have you seen Blade of the Immortal? I have been obsessed with Hiroaki Samura's art lately.
