If the Falcon’s pre-season performance is any indication, then I’d say that the Adamson Falcons have a legitimate chance to once again break into the Final Four. It isn’t a sure slot though so hard work must be done and maintained throughout the season. Remember, the people love underdogs most especially those who work hard for their wins. It doesn’t have to be flashy or highlight-reel filled like the plays of their more famous counterparts but it must be as effective.

Should they fall short of expectations, they should hold on to their coach and allow him to make a proper program for the school so that future batches will benefit and eventually, Adamson will become a perennial contender. All of the perennial contenders in the league had solid foundations made by years of hard work, patience and proper execution of the plan: Ateneo benefited from a good program and because they held on to that program, La Salle rose from being a “pretty good” basketball team in the NCAA into a juggernaut in the UAAP via a good development plan and aggressive recruitment to find players who share their goals.

Do this and Adamson will always be there among the favorites.

I'd like how coach Austria carry his team, as if they're like playing for years. I just watched their debut game against the FEU at the UAAP. Its like they're a well oiled machine, displaying plays which were beautifully executed. Especially the high-low plays of Collina to Galinato, or the other way.

Adamson should be creative with their plays because I'm quite sure that I'm not the only one who recognized the effectiveness of the particular play.

I saw how adu played during the first half... Great job coach... Iwas expecting a blow out... Wala ka talaga talent halos pero galing ng kilos ng mga bata... Sad lang kase ga't di ka makarecruit ng astig na players soso ka lang talaga...Suyurin nalang po probinsya...Marami pa tira diyan.. kase sa manila hawak na ng admu tapos ang tira sa DLSU, UE at san beda na... Sila kase may pera... Good job kanina coach... Pag maka5th kayo overachieving na... I think kaya UP at NU... YUng lima mahirap... Sana makaisa sa mga yun... Good luck Falcons... *okay*

overall maganda nilaro ng adamson, yun nga lang kasama dun sa downside yung crucial errors and wrong decisions by canada!!! i was little bit harsh on this guy but that was what i observed, as per game 1, but i hope that he would learn how to settle down a bit on their upcoming games and hope to get a w, because obviously coach leo trusts him that much, keeping him inside instead of alvarez, who i think played well , up til the end!!!

great execution of plays, and great balanced scoring, but their PG should minimize his TO's, and stop forced jump shots like gonzalgo did in the first half i think gonzalgo will be more effective attacking the basket, and agustin the 5th yr vet should STEP UP. galinato is the "Big revelation"

the Ateneo-Adamson game showed the Falcons' Achilles' heel. masyadong naka-depende sa sentro ang plays na ginawa ni Leo Austria for Adamson. i know that for defensive plays, you rely on your front court but i think it is not good that all of team's play will be centered on Galinato while the guards (Alvarez, Cañada, Gonzalgo, etc.) will just wait and see what Galinato can do.

kung magkaganun kasi, all opposing teams have to do is to neutralize Galinato and heighten their defense to "fright" the Adamson guards. parang ganun kasi yung nangyari kahapon eh- na-foul trouble si Galinato at "natakot" sa depensa ng Ateneo ang iba pang players ng Adamson, lalong lalo na yung mga guwardiya, kaya nagkanya-kanya na lang sila ng biyahe.

they keep rotating the ball until they run out of time and because of not having an option underneath, they are forced to take outside shots..

i think one of the most important things that coach leo should focus on is how they can penetrate through the oppnent's defense..in that way, i think, the guy on post will be open.

MARK AGUSTIN should step on the gas hard! If he'll do it whole heartedly, everyone will follow his foot prints. I believe he is mature enough to perceive where he stands now. Just have to push yourself harder! And a little bit more. :grrr:

Adamson replaced the slot of NU, which is my second favorite last year. Just keep on soaring.. I enjoy watching you guys glide and go.

actually, i based that observation not only on Leo Austria's current assignment but also during his first tour of duty as the Falcons' head coach in 2006. Austria's plays then were all centered on a man named Ken Bono. Adamson then had a wait-and-see approach in a sense that Austria would create a play based on the offensive and defensive output of Bono while the rest of the team, most especially the guards, would just wait for the result of Bono's actions.

the case of the 2007-2008 batch is just the same as the 2006-2007 batch. instead of Bono manning the 5, it is Galinato who is this generation's lone legitimate center. because Austria's plays are dependent on Galinato, all that the opposing team must do to defeat Adamson is to neutralize Galinato, suffocate the Falcons on defense and make the rest of the team flee the action in fear. :eek:

I'm not expecting anything this season. We are happy if we placed 6th place. We have lots of good guys in the pool and two sets of imports being readied for residency. ;)

same old style. gonzalgo, again, forcing the issue, badtrip ****. then si galinato na early foul trouble, nsira ang laro, maganda na *** start nila maganda *** ball rotation and executions but sa secondhalf nag collapse na because of forced outside shots. then about agustin nmn, kitang kita kaya nmn nyang makipag bugbugan sa loob ewan ko ba dito. then yun nga nagkanya kanya na sila. then there's canada who also had unecessary turnovers. sana si alvarez gawin nilang starting PG kahit sa sunday lang against NU.

ADU Falcons drop NU Bulldogs, 73-65
The Adamson University Falcons demolished the National U Bulldogs, 73-65, during the first Sunday match up of the 71st UAAP Men’s Basketball at the Philsports Arena (formerly Ultra).

Mark Agustin led the Falcons with 25 points and five rebounds to pull away from the Bulldogs during the final quarter.

Adamson also received additional firepower from Jan Colina, who drained 11 points and grabbed four rebounds.

Although the Falcons were leading throughout the game, they only started piling enough points for comfort during the fourth shortly after NU mounted a rally led by Edwin Asoro.

With eight points ahead NU before the final two minutes of the game, Adamson surged with four more points to lock the win at 73-65.

Well, that's UAAP. Adamson will always be there but it all boils down to their execution on the end game. ;)

I hope that the Falcons will do the same kind of defense that they did versus UE at the FilOil knockout game for the Finals.

TRIVIA: Marcy Arellano scored ZERO on that game after playing all game long. :lol:

Marc Agustin did well. that's what i've been looking for since he started playing for AdU. however, that game he had reminded me of their game against the same team<NU> when he was still a rookie. he also had 20+ points..and that's it, that was the only game i can remember he played well until this afternoon.
well, i'm keeping my fingers crossed for his consistency..he needs to maintain that kind of aggressiveness he has shown today against NU and there's no doubt he could be a big factor if ever they make it to the final four. like what most people say including me, he could if he would..

the rest of of the players also did well. Galinato scored only when he needed to, same thing with Colina. they just need to work harder on rebounds, ball passing, and esp avoiding TOs..
Canada did great, but i would suggest him to cross the ball to the halfcourt himself. pansin ko kasi lagi siya humihinto pag malapit na sa halfcourt line saka maghahanap ng papasahan..that could be one cause of turnovers. also Gonzalgo should be mature enough to avoid shooting outside, he has the ability to penetrate and that's what he need to do.

well, everything else were effective. good job Coach LEo!

now, people might again question our inability to close out games in reference with our recent game with ue, but i beg to disagree, i think we did what we had to do to beat them, we just gave them the opportunity and the confidence to come back via...............our missed free throws and not because of the lack of spunk of our players!!! mark agustin, 6 consecutive missed ft, colina missed some crucial ft as well, if we made at least 80% of our ft, the winning margin could have been bigger!!! because the larger the margin, would put more pressure on ue, plus the clock ticking away and our choking defense/hussle plays, that would definitely take out the juice from ue, and they could have lost by a larger margin and not by a measly 2 points!!!

but a win is a win, whether gonzalgo's 3 pointer was a fluke or not is irrelevant, because we worked hard during the game, we put ourselves in a position to win, and we did, we deserved it!!!

I beg to disagree with the opinion of bathousai that it could have been a larger margin if not only for those missed free throws. Remember that warriors MISSED A LOT OF FREE THROWS also. Had the warriors sunk at least half of those, it could have been a different outcome also. Falcons were leading by 15 points only to lose it in the closing minutes. They almost blew this game if not only for the winning basket of Gonzalgo. It is really an upset. AN UPSET.

Falcons give Warriors shock of their lives

Adamson yesterday showed what it can do, and University of the East what it can’t do in the 71st UAAP season.

The underdogs, coach Leo Austria’s Falcons scored the biggest shocker so far this year when they turned back the Warriors, 66-64, before their cheering fans at the Philsports Arena.

Paul Gonzalgo, son of former PBA star Dante Gonzalgo of Ginebra, delivered the game-winning basket, a triple over the UE’s Marcy Arellano with only 1.6 seconds remaining.

Elmer Espiritu had just given the Warriors a 64-63 lead after they trailed most of the way, and just found the urgency to win in the dying minutes of the game.

After Gonzalgo dropped the bomb, the Warriors sued for time, but failed to turn things around when Arellano missed a triple that went with the final buzzer.

Then the Falcons celebrated like champions.

“I consider this as an upset because we all know that UE is one of the contenders,” said Austria, a former PBA star himself, and winner of the top rookie honors in 1986.

“Maybe this is the beginning of us believing in ourselves. I keep on telling my players to believe in themselves and they will win games. I hope this is the start of us being contenders,” he added.

The Warriors, who swept last year’s elims, played like the underdogs, and paid the price, a second straight loss following big wins over Santo Tomas and National University.

In the other game, Far Eastern U survived a late surge by Santo Tomas, and the Tamaraws won, 70-65, to move up in a tie for second with La Salle at 3-1.

The Tigers, the 2006 champions, dropped to 1-3 tied with UP.

Austria stayed out of the Adamson bench last year as Bogs Adornado, a former PBA superstar, took over. But there’s another change this year, hopefully for the better.

Paul Gonzalgo hit a huge triple with 1.6 seconds left to lift Adamson University to a pulsating 66-64 win over the fancied University of the East squad yesterday in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

Gonzalgo, son of former Ginebra stalwart Dante, made the crucial shot after UE’s Elmer Espiritu hit two free throws with still 23.9 ticks left.

The Red Warriors had a chance to steal the win but Marcy Arellano missed a last-gasp attempt from rainbow territory.

"I’m happy that we got the upset win because UE is one of the contenders," said coach Leo Austria. "With this win, it adds morale to the team, maybe it’s a beginning for them to believe in themselves."

In the second game, Far Eastern University survived a late comeback by University of Santo Tomas for a 70-65 victory and took share of second place with idle De La Salle at 3-1.

Team captain Benedict Fernandez led the Tamaraws by scoring nine of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, turning a 49-47 deficit into a 62-53 advantage with 5:46 remaining.

Also stepping up big for the Falcons was Jan Colina, who scored15 points and hauled down 10 rebounds, seven off the offensive glass.

The Falcon thus tied UE for fourth place with identical 2-2 win-loss records.

Gonzalgo, who had 12 points and five rebounds off the bench, took the shot after the Falcons failed to execute their first option.

"It was supposed to be a pick-and-roll play for Canada, pero option din si Paul sa opensa, may nakita siyang opportunity so he took the shot," Austria said.

After a 32-27 lead at halftime, Gonzalgo, Mike Galinato, and Jeff Olalia erupted in the third canto that saw Adamson build a commanding 48-33 advantage.

But UE fought back in the fourth quarter highlighted by a triple of James Martinez that shoved the Warriors within 60-59, with 2:38 remaining.

But Olilia hit a basket 14 seconds later to put it back to three, 62-59, at the 2:24 mark.

Following a split each from Espiritu and Gonzalgo, Hans Thiele made both charities with 1:06 left.

Colina was called for an offensive foul on the ensuing play with 43.2 seconds left as the Warriors regained possession.

Colina then sent Espiritu to the foul line for UE’s last two points.

The Red Warriors led early, 15-10, in the first quarter advantage before Colina scored seven points in the second quarter to lift Adamson to a five-point halftime advantage.

The Tigers nearly stole the game from the Tamaraws, chopping the margin to only two, 67-65, off UST rookie Clark Bautista’s trey and Jeric Fortuna’s jumper with 1:50 remaining.

UST, however, was held scoreless the rest of the way.

"We won the game because of our defense pero hindi ako makapaniwala na kahit 33 percent lang kami sa shooting, nanalo kami," said FEU mentor Glen Capacio.

Aside from Fernandez, Baracael recorded 16 points and four rebounds for the Tamaraws with point guard Mark Barroca adding eight points, six rebounds, four steals, and three assists.

Francis Allera led UST with 20 points and eight rebounds before being sidelined for the rest of the game because of cramps.

In women’s basketball held at the Ateneo Blue Eagle gym, Adamson dumped defending champion Ateneo, 70-45, while University of the Philippines scored a razor-thin 53-52 victory over University of Santo Tomas.

In other games, Far Eastern University trounced National University, 50-31, while De La Salle mauling UE, 62-45.

MANILA, Philippines—Adamson University pulled off the first reversal of the 71st UAAP men’s basketball tournament with a 66-64 squeaker over University of the East Sunday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Paul Gonzalgo knocked in a triple with 1.6 seconds left to salvage the game after the Falcons had blown a 15-point lead, 48-33, over last season’s runner-up.

Gonzalgo, the 5-foot-11 son of former pro Dante Gonzalgo, and Jan Colina both came up big in the Falcons’ second straight victory in four outings.

Colina buried a team-high 15 points, including six straight that kept the Falcons in the match during the Warriors’ fourth-quarter comeback. The 6-foot-3 forward also grabbed 10 rebounds and posted three blocks.

The Warriors still had a chance to claim victory, but skipper Marcy Arellano’s potential game-winning triple rimmed out at the buzzer.

“Our offense and the execution of our plays were good,” said Adamson coach Leo Austria. “The players really wanted to win.”

Far Eastern University earlier survived a late University of Santo Tomas rally for a 70-65 win that gave the Tamaraws a share of second place at 3-1.

Benedict Fernandez, who presided over a key run that put the Tamaraws up at 60-53, posted a career-high 24 points, nailing five of six attempts from beyond the arc.

Mac Baracael added 16 markers, including three free throws in the last 26 seconds after rookies Clark Bautista and Jeric Fortuna had moved the Tigers within a basket, 67-65.

Jervy Cruz finished with 11 markers and a career-low three rebounds. The Tigers also played without starting point guard Japs Cuan, who suffered a meniscus tear on his left knee.

“We won that game because of our defense,” said FEU mentor Glenn Capacio. “We shot 33 percent from the field, but we still won. We also controlled Jervy (Cruz) at the boards, so credit goes to our big men.”

Before Gonzalgo’s game-winning shot, Elmer Espiritu sank two free throws off a Colina foul with 23.9 ticks left to give the Warriors their first lead, 64-63, since early in the second period.

“We knew that UE is capable of a comeback and that’s exactly what happened,” said Austria. “Without our big men, it would have been hard for us to win. They don’t have a legitimate center and the presence of (Michael) Galinato intimidated their big men.”

The Warriors skidded to their second straight loss to join the Falcons at 2-2.

It was the second straight time that a former pro’s son starred for the Falcons after Marc Agustin, son of former PBA MVP Ato Agustin, led Adamson to a 73-65 win over National University last week.

With Colina and Junard Yambot waxing hot, the Falcons outscored the Warriors, 22-12, in the second quarter for a 32-27 halftime lead.

The lead ballooned to 42-29 after Galinato, who contributed nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks, sparked a 10-2 Adamson spurt early in the third period.

The Warriors, who lost to Ateneo de Manila University, 64-58, last week, again played without top backup guard Paul Lee, who was recovering from dengue.

I beg to disagree with the opinion of bathousai that it could have been a larger margin if not only for those missed free throws. Remember that warriors MISSED A LOT OF FREE THROWS also. Had the warriors sunk at least half of those, it could have been a different outcome also. Falcons were leading by 15 points only to lose it in the closing minutes. They almost blew this game if not only for the winning basket of Gonzalgo. It is really an upset. AN UPSET.


i respect your opinion dude, but mine was based on adamson's standpoint and has nothing to do with the problems/woes of ue during the game!!!

Ang anak ni dating Ginebra player Dante Gonzalgo na si Paul, ang nagdeliber ng winning basket para sa Adamson.

Walang pagkakaiba ang laro ni Paul sa kanyang amang si Dante.
Kaya’t ‘yung mga susunod na makakalaban ng Adamson, maghanda-handa na dahil palaban ang Falcons.

Nakuha ng UE si Acibar after graduation. Promising big man din kasi si Acibar, at desperado si Dindo Pumaren gumawa ng isang 14-0 team like last season.

Si Olalia muntik na rin mapadpad sa ibang school yan, buti na lang mukhang mediocre sa simula, pero mukhang start ng nagppeak up ang laro niya.

Hayaan muna natin si Coach Jing, July lang niya nahawakan ang Juniors natin sobrang late na. Wala kasi nagawang maayos ang former coach natin, hindi sila na-train ng maayos. Pero malakas si Juruena, kaso lang talo na naman tayo sa DLSZ kanina at 1-3 na. :(

UST is now suffering a slump right now, missing players due to various reasons. Adamson's interior defense will be tested against Cruz and Ababou. UST lacks shooters in compared to the other teams and there's nothing to worry about that department.

Once our offense clicks, it will be a very good win. :)

Academically speaking, I don't want to compare UE to Adamson. Each school has its own history of academic excellence achievements. In the first place, this is UAAP forum remember. We can talk about academic in different forum. So, let's focus our talks in sports, basketball in particular.

When it comes to senior basketball achievements, I don't think UE is comparable to ADU.

Here's the fact:

Championship Title
UE - 18
ADU - 1

Finals appearance:
UE - 25+
ADU - 1

Final Four appearance:
UE - 10+
ADU - 1

Games between the 2 schools in UAAP history:
It's about 95% to 5% ratio in favor of UE.
