Second quarter run fuels Red Warrior triumph

UNIVERSITY of the East may have had a frustrating first day on the job, but still managed to fend off the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 78-73, in the opening day of the 71st University Athletic Association of the Philippines seniors basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum last July 5, 2008.

The Red Warriors managed to overcome an “ugly-officiated opening game” according to coach Dindo Pumaren and a furious Santo Tomas rally behind the exploits of high-flying forward Elmer Espiritu, who scored seven points in the final quarter to tow UE into the win column.

“I do not mind playing with three fouls early in the third quarter. I just keep playing my best out there,” said Espiritu, who tallied 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and grabbed nine rebounds to lead UE despite being in foul trouble for much of the second half.

University of the East squandered a 64-58 lead at the start of payoff frame thanks to an 8-4 UST spurt, which was capped off by six Jervy Cruz points that reduced the deficit to 66-68 with 4:14 left to go.

But the Red Warriors quickly used an 8-3 run to keep the win.

After Hans Thiele’s split from the charity stripe, UE forced UST into a turnover, resulting into a highlight reel-type three point play converted by Espiritu, which put the Red Warriors on top, 72-66, with 3:19 remaining in the clock.

Cruz answered with a basket to make it 68-72, but missed two important free throws in the 2:33 mark that could have put his squad within reach.

Dylan Ababou split his charities to help UST come within three, 69-72, in the two-minute mark, but Espiritu replied with two free throws of his own and scored on a difficult baseline jumper with less than 20 seconds left to increase the Red Warrior lead to 76-69 and eventually give the Recto-based outfit the victory.

“We played good defense despite the early foul trouble on my players,” said Pumaren. “Elmer [Espiritu] made good plays down the stretch, including two crucial attacks with a minute left. I think that was the turning point in the game.”

University of the East lost guard Paul Lee due to two technical fouls at the 3:02 mark in the third quarter, but UST failed to take advantage of the backcourt handicap.

Thiele poured in 12 of his 13 points in the second canto, while shooting guard Marcy Arellano and James Martinez scored 11 and 10 markers respectively for the Red Warriors, who swept the 14-game elimination round last year.

Rookie John Noble, a former Letran Squire, and Lee combined for 12 points.

“Wow, that’s a good game from a rookie,” said Pumaren of Noble.

A close first quarter that saw the Growling Tigers lead by two, 26-24, was followed by a UE onslaught in the second. Thiele scored eight crucial points in a 20-7 run that gave the Warriors a 50-39 halftime edge.

Cruz led UST with 26 points and grabbed a game-high 22 rebounds, while Dylan Ababou and Chester Taylor scored 15 and 10 points, respectively.

UE shot 37.7% from the field while UST went 33.3%. The Red Warriors also scored 20 points off of 18 Tiger turnovers.

Jervy Cruz is the Filipino version of Charles Barkley, and he is the most dominating player in the UAAP because he is capable of producing a rare 20-20 numbers in the Elimination Round.


Despite playing with a hamstring injury, he is still be the best player on the court, and I hope UST will improve their outside shooting because i still believe that this team is the Darkhorse Candidate to win Season 71.

Hans Thiele had a major improvement during the off season by developing his midrange jumpers, and Both Marcy Arellano and Elmer Espiritu played well for the Warriors especially during the 4th quarter.

I am hoping next game that the Tigers will concentrate in improving their team defense, they need to take one game at a time because the team is just starting to jell after adding some talented prospect this year.

Jervy Cruz is my early bet for MVP, and I predict he is going to be the first overall pick in the 2009 PBA Draft.

I remember a certain poster saying that Jervy isn't capable of playing againts 6'8" plus Centers, but he was proven wrong because in the RP Team's exhibition game againts the Singapore Slingers, the 6'4" Jervy Cruz dominated their two 6-10 Centers by scoring 23 points and grabbing a game high 12 rebounds.


With big men Alex Crisano and Beau Belga saddled with fouls, reigning UAAP MVP Jervy Cruz manned the slot for the Nationals and more than held his own against the Slingers’ two 6-foot-10 centers.

The 6-foot-4 Cruz posted game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds that enabled the Filipinos to hold the Slingers to a slight 57-54 edge off the boards.

Great Article about William "Bogs" Adornado ( Former player of the UST Glowing Goldies, and a 3x Most Valuable Player of the Year in the PBA.). They later change the name of the team to UST Growling Tigers starting at the 1992-93 UAAP season.

William "Bogs" Adornado is perhaps the most courageous player in the history of the PBA. He came back from a career-threatening injury despite the tremendous odds and emerged even better to dominate the league with the true heart of a great champion.

Adornado, a mainstay of the mighty Crispa dynasty before he took his shooting hands to U-Tex and three other ballclubs, did not only have the most picture-perfect jumpshot but also pulled off the most amazing comeback the league has ever seen. When a serious knee injury meant virtual goodbye to basketball, the sweet-shooting forward came back mightily with his shooting hands as deadly as ever.

And before anybody has repeated as Most Valuable Player, Adornado already had three MPV trophies displayed in his Hall-of-Fame locker.

One of the legends to come out of collegiate power University of Sto. Tomas, Adornado would later turn out to be the yardstick of all great shooting forwards who ever graced the PBA, burning the hoops with one of the deadliest perimeter jumpers the league has ever witnessed.

Bogs, who was born on May 26, 1951, played a total of 12 seasons, averaging 20.4 points per game. He was out of the league for the whole of the 1977 season recovering from an injury that almost finished a promising career. A knee injury following Crispa's first grand slam in 1976 nearly cut Adornado's career.

The 6'1 Adornado was the league's first MVP awardee in 1975, and easily repeated the following year, with averages of 26.9 and 25.6 ppg, respectively. He won his third MVP in 1981 while playing for U-Tex in one of the grandest comebacks in PBA annals.

Bannering U-Tex, Adornado scored 64 points in one of his memorable comeback games and led his team to a 126-111 demolition of San Miguel. That total was the most scored by any local player at that time.

Adornado was also a key factor when U-Tex won the 1980 Open Conference over Toyota, a landmark victory that finally broke the Crispa-Toyota domination of the league.

Adornado won more three scoring championships upon his return, averaging 23.9 ppg, 26.1 ppg and 27.4 ppg.

He converted 69 consecutive free throws from Oct. 14, 1986 while playing for Shell until Aug. 7, 1987 while donning the Hill Bros. Jersey, a record that stood for six years until a new sweet-shooting gunner in the mold of Adornado by the name of Allan Caidic broke it with 76 consecutive free shots made.

All in all, Bogs was a member of seven Mythical Team Selections. He led the league in scoring five times and is a member of the 5,000- and 10,000-point clubs, scoring 11,967 points in 586 games during his memorable career.

The loss to UE last Saturday was just OK, the Tigers can get back naman with a win over UP on Saturday!

The only thing I am ranting about, and I don't know if there's something we can do about it, is the shameless act of some Thomasians who left the game even before the UST Hymn had been sung. From where I was standing, I saw many empty seats when we sang the UST Hymn and worse some are even in the act of exiting when we were singing. Di na bale na hindi memorized o sintunado sa pagkanta ng UST Hymn basta mag-stay lang as a sign of school pride or even respect man lang. Hindi porke't talo na eh mag-iiwanan na. Kaya tayo naakusahan na pagiging fair-weathered eh! :(

Dylan Ababou - Mr. All Around

I think he is one of the most complete player in the UAAP, and he is really doing a great job in the first 2 games of the UST Tigers in Season 71.

Dylan is a great ball handler for a guy, who stands at 6'3, and he is also one of the best athlete in the amateur league.

He reminds me alot of a local version of Scottie Pippen because he is also capable of playing the Point Forward position in the UAAP.

I expect him to be a more consistent scorer this season, and if he would work harder in improving his weaknesses i can see him being voted in the UAAP Mythical First Team.

I think it would be better if we dont keep our heads too high and really focus on the realities that while UST is a strong team, De La Salle had the championship factor. I had the guts they would win and they did by 1 measely pt.Yes i acknowledge school pride here but dont aim for the sky if youll fall on the roof or dont aim at the roof if youll fall on the ground. To be able to stop the Growling Tigers you must first stop not only Jervy Cruz but also Dylan Ababou and Captain Japs. Jervy Cruz being the number one rebounder and inside shooter (a real threat to all teams), Dylan Ababou as a complete player (able to score from inside/outside the perimeter) and Captain Japs the assist leader of the season (finding the most open tiger around the shade).

Ang laking kawalan ng tatlong ito sa isang game. Isa pa nga lang mawala nagmumukhang tagilid na tayo. Lalo na ngayong wala pa si Japs.
