VL Salle will most likely duplicate history. It will duplicate the feat of FEU in '06 of missing the final four after winning the championship the year before.
Imagine the starting 5 of Walsham, Maierhofer, Malabes, Casio and Atkins. With the bench of Marko, Ferdinand, Mangahas. Let's add Webb and Bagatsing to that. Still a very weak team.
Best thing to do for Franz is to retire while he's ahead.

You should really get your facts right. Franz was doing his duty by being with the RP Youth team who were all in Thailand last weekend. Remember, SBP's own MVP chose him to coach the RP Youth and thus he is merely doing what he was called upon to do. For love of country. So unlike some schools who withheld their players from playing for the Philippines for their own selfish interests.
Coach Franz is as committed to the RP Youth as he is with DLSU. Also, unlike other schools who would rather pull out of a tournament because their head coach would not be available, Franz has enough confidence on the rest of the DLSU coaching staff to coach those final two games of which they won one (vs. Adamson) and lost one (against FEU). That's fine. Besides, he already did that while he was coaching the RP Youth in the SEABA tournament which they won handily.
Remember, for as long as MVP keeps Franz as the coach of the National Youth team, DLSU has to get used to this since from Aug. 28 to Sept. 5, Franz will again be with the RP Youth to compete in the very difficult FIBA-Asia Youth tournament. A tournament that they are not expected to win. But Franz will stand by his committment while the rest of the DLSU Coaching Staff will have to coach the Green Archers for all their games in this period. Thus, whenever he can, he gives the coaching staff - La Sallians Tyrone Bautista, Tonichi Yturri and Cholo Villanueva - the opportunity to coach the Green Archers in real tournament conditions. Asst. Coach Jack Santiago is part of the RP Youth coaching staff.
Jumping ship? Hahahahaha great joke! Almost tore my gut out laughing! At least, Franz and our coaching staff don't have to worry about the frat-politic of State's own athletic program. Just ask Coach Joe.

The Green Archers are definitely weaker this year than last. In the words of Coach Franz himself, last year's team was the weakest DLSU team he had coached and but it was only the team's resolve that willed them to win. This year, such motivation is not as high. Add to that the departure of five key players of the team - TY, Cholo, Brian, Kish and OJ. Also, though they expanded team rosters to 16, DLSU may only submit 15 names. That alone shows the weakness of the team this year. BUT, we will do our best to at least make the Final Four even though DLSU will find it very difficult to just make the Final Four as this season seems to be the most balanced in recent years.
ALMOST ALL of the 8 UAAP teams can contend for the Final Four. Again, I emphasize, ALMOST ALL.

I beg to differ sir. The Green Archers are quite strong this year. This'll be Mangahas' breakout season as well as Barua. I strongly believe that both are better than Cholo in terms of overall gameplay and athleticism. With the addition of LA Revilla and Bagatsing, La Salle has just beefed up its back-court offense. Imagine a rotation consisting of Casio, Bagatsing, Mangahas, Rico, and Walsham. All are offensive threats. All are great defenders. All are athletic.
So no, the archers are way stronger this year. Pre-season tournaments are really meant for the newbies. Just to get their feet wet so to speak. LA may be a slight of a defensive liability, but his quickness will open up the lanes.

You obviously have not seen enough games of UE, ADMU, FEU and even Adamson and NU. Even the secretive UST Tigers should not be discounted. I rank UE, ADMU and FEU as the top three, hands down.

i agree with greenarrows, but i like where la salle is starting-- far from the top. a lot of seasons had la salle starting the same way. 2004 and 2007 effortlessly come to mind. so let's just sit back, relax, enjoy the 2 round elims and see if la salle makes it to the final 4.
if they do, then ask 2004's feu & admu and 2007's ue & admu how it is to face a weak la salle in the big f4 dance.

The Green Archers are heavily favored to win. It's the only collegiate team we all know of that's willing to win at all costs - by hook or crook.

You raise an interesting point. You say he is "AS COMMITTED" to the country as he is to the school. Shouldn't it be country above all else? ANyway, that may really be too much to expect from him.
But another point needs to be clarified. Franz has been very demanding and has "mandated" that the RP youth players be fully committed. In fact, all the RP youth players had to skip any other tournaments that would conflict with any international schedule. But why is it that the head coach himself is allowed to juggle his 2 coaching jobs? If any one is required to be fully committed, it should be the head coach.
Otherwise, he should have allowed the players to still play in their respective tournaments and, like him, just skip a small part of the tournament where there is an actual conflict in schedule.

There's an obvious conflict of interest issue here and Franz, being who/what he is, is taking advantage of the situation by "double dipping." In a civilized country, such a situation will not be allowed. Only in the Philippines..........

Kumbaga low key muna ang image para walang pressure. Nung panahon kasi ni Villavicencio, masyadong high profile ang image (pati team building seminars, na-publicize, courtesy of Jason Webb's # 1 fan, Nap Gutierrez). Then add Villavicencio's big mouth, bragadoccio and bold statements ("We're not afraid of you, you should be afraid of us;" "You prevented us from making a sweep, we'll take away your back-to-back championships;" "You only have Dennis Espino, I have the entire team to throw at you;" "Breaks lang nagpanalo sa kanila" and so on and so forth) Ayun, minalas at naging heartbreak years tuloy.

As to why they did not ask the coaches. you should ask them - UP alumnus Patrick Gregorio and Bedan/Atenean MVP. Remember, the coaching staff includes DLSU's Franz Pumaren and Jack Santiago, ADMU's Sandy Arrespacochaga, UE's Dindo Pumaren and, for awhile, SBC's Ato Badolato who later begged off.

YOU should get YOUR facts straight. It was Franz, not the SBP, who asked for a FULL TIME commitment from the players. Something he could not give himself. What makes him different?
At the dinner held last February (or was it January, I forget) with the BAP-SBP officials and those of Tao - the team sponsors, Coach Franz asked for their total committment to the training and objectives of the team but did not ask them to skip any tournament. Then discussions turned to their playing in the coming season. Gregorio then said that maybe the players (NOT THE COACHES) should consider skipping one year in their respective tournaments to avoid injuries and to build better team work. It was at this point that Mayor Manguera - father of Jed Manguera of DLS-Zobel offered to have his son skip the next UAAP tournament for the sake of the team. One by one, the parents of each candidate offered to do the same though this was NOT unanimous and some did not even say that their son would skip the next season in their respective tournaments.
In the end, it was the BAP-SBP that decided that all the players of the team should skip one season so that they could train as only one team and not worry about having to train for their respective schools. If the players did that, the regimen would have been too exhausting. Also, skipping a season would lessen the chances for injury. It was the BAP-SBP that made this decision, with the support of most of the parents but did not impose the same on Franz, Jack, Sandy and Dindo.
Again, it would be good if you could check with the BAP-SBP as to the facts on this matter.

From the very same article:
"SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio and RP Youth team coach Franz Pumaren maintained playing for the national squad and their mother schools at the same time could adversely affect the performance of the cagers."
xxx
Training with their mother teams plus playing in actual game days in the collegiate league would leave no time and opportunity for the players to practice with the RP team," Pumaren said.
Pero pag sa coach, ok lang.....
Coach Franz just followed the lead of Gregorio to reiterate the BAP-SBP's telling the players to skip one season. It is not Coach Franz's problem if the press wants to interview him more than Gregorio. Thus, as a loyal soldier to this cause, he merely told the press what the BAP-SBP wanted. Note, in the first line it said "SBP executive director Patrick Gregorio AND RP Youth Coach....." The same was NOT asked of the coaches.

I don't think pundit is a troll. He/she has been a long time member here in PEX and though he/she has very strong opinions, I have yet to see a post of his/hers, that outrightly bashes anyone. That is why I reply to pundit's post with due respect and not disrespect. Harsh, maybe, but never disrespectul.
Truth be told, I have agreed with pundit on several occassions over the years just as I have differed with his/her opinions also but did not feel strongly enough to post my agreement or disagreement. In this case above, I just wanted to bring out the facts surrounding the RP Youth players' not playing in their respective leagues this season.
Also, it may surprise everyone that I AGREE WITH PUNDIT that the DLSU Green Archers will struggle this season just to get into the Final Four. Remember, 7 of the 8 teams in the UAAP, IMHO, are contenders for a Final Four slot and I even see a tie or even a triple tie for the fourth and final slot. That is how even the quality of competitions are in the UAAP this year. If you ask who I think is not a contender for a Final Four slot, with all due respect to my UP friends, I don't think their team is prepared to make a Final Four run. Maybe in two years when their very versatile Fil-Am has already fulfilled his residency requirements. Aren't those residency requirements for Filipinos who, by no choice of theirs, grew up abroad just a pain?!? I do believe, however, that UP will pull some upsets and that those upsets will help determine the Final Four cast.
Lastly, allow me to say that UE has a better chance of winning the UAAP Championship this year than they had last year, the 14-0 streak notwithstanding. This year's team is an all-natural Dindo team which he has molded since each player started playing for UE. No carry overs or transferees from other coaches or teams. All solid Dindo picks who have his system in their blood. Sure, they may not replicate their 14-0 record but they are stronger as a core team than any other team. My opinion only, of course.

O ayan ha. Si GA na nagsabi, baka naman di pa kayo maniwala.
Anyway, I'd like to say one last piece on this matter. Setting aside the semantics of who requested what, the fact is that Franz feels that it is best for his players to focus 100% on their RP youth stint. That in itself is subject to debate, but I am willing to leave it at that.
What I am in disagreeement with is the fact that the entire coaching staff, led by Franz, is not required to render the same sacrifice. I think it is but fair that if all the players are required to sacrifice for the good of the country, the team's leadership should do no less.

If Sandy would take the first step in sacrificing then maybe i can join your cause in asking for the entire coaching staff to follow suit. Sandy is not even being asked by Ateneo to take a leave of absence as assistant coach of the blue eagles so i guess it's no big deal for them. Just let it be.

Pundit has already made his/her point. Let's leave it at that and get back to the topic of this thread.
For everyone's information, DLSU submitted the other day 17 names to the Eligibility Committee for them to screen. Among the 17 names are 6 homegrown players - 3 from LSGH and 3 from DLS-Z. Note, however, not all the 'homegrown' players played in the Junior tournaments of the UAAP or the NCAA. The reason why 17 names were submitted is that a lot of our players are playing hurt or are nursing injuries. The coaching staff will make the decision on the final 16 only on the day that all schools are to submit their final rosters.

Strange to ask one of the assistants, and not the head coach, to take the first step on behalf of the entire coaching staff. That's unusual to say the least. And that's a very weird way of arguing.

my point is why are you asking for franz to sacrifice his post as head coach of DLSU when no one else is doing so including your beloved school. Ateneo and MVP himself have been quiet about the whole thing, that means it's ok with them. Actually it's just you who's making a big fuss over it. If you really want the coaching staff to make the sacrifice then write an open letter to the SBP or to MVP himself and vent out your frustrations. Remember, the SBP and MVP are the employers of franz and co and im sure if his bosses tell him to concentrate on the youth team he will be more than willing to oblige. Madaling kausap si franz. Good Luck! Sulat na!!! ;)

No strife here. Green vs. Green is a favorite past time of us alumni. No 'company line' for us. Each one is entitled to his/her opinion.
Jeffjan, as to who the additional names are, they are Paolo Rodriguez from LSGH and Manoj Chandumal from DLS-Z. Now as to who will compose the Final 16, like I said, the coaching staff will decide on the very last day for the submission of final line-ups. By then, we should have a clearer picture on the status of our various injured players.

Interesting development. Manoj Chandumal was part of the 2005 Junior Archers team. A teammate of Simon Atkins, Migs de Asis and Martin Reyes during their championship run in 2005. He played the two position when he was a junior Archer.
If I remember correctly he was voted MVP in a Fil-Indian League last year or a few years back.
About Rodriguez, what position does he play and what year did he suit up for the LSGH greenies?

To be fair, I don't think you can count foreigners who were recruited to play ball, and enrolled in one of La Salle's HS, as homegrown. They are quite the opposite. Spending a year in a La Salle HS specifically for the purpose of circumventing the more "oppressive" 2 year residency in college does not make one a homegrown. I am even tempted to use the term mercenary.

The team has 6 rookies and 5 homegrown players.
6 rookies? That ain't good. A big bulk of the bench will be untried and may not be that much reliable. And an underdeveloped lot too.
I just hope we make it in one piece....

FYI, as far as I know, Makro was enrolled in LSGH for 3 years before entering DLSU while Ferdinand was enrolled in LSGH for 2 1/2 years before entering DLSU. As you can see, they had more than fulfilled the 2 year residency even before they entered DLSU. So mercenary? I think not. For a little bit of trivia, San Beda was, in one way or another, the source of four of our players - Casio, Revilla (though he spent his freshman high school in LSGH), Ferdinand and Bagatsing. Thanks Beda!
P.S. I do agree, the UAAP 2 year residency requirement is 'oppressive'. But as karma would have it, that rule vigorously pushed by FEU's Montinola came back to bite him when he could not get Jonas Villanueva and Pipo to play earlier. How's that for karma?

Sayang locked na ang Bagatsing vs. Buenafe thread. I just came across interesting information.
Someone insinuated that Buenafe, at 18, is OLD, etc. Out of 16 players in the DLSU lineup, guess who are the most "senior"?
Walsham - 1984 (24) and, drumroll, please....... Rookie Hyram Bagatsing who is already 23! Casio who's in his 6th year is even younger.
Wow.....
Let's put this in perspective. When Hyram was a HS freshman (let's assume this was when he was 14), Buenafe was only in grade 3 (9 years old). When Hyram graduated HS (I assume he was 18 then), Buenafe was a HS freshman.

PS: On a more serious note, what kind of a sick sense of humor does this school have? Dressing up their gladiators as women on the eve of their important battle? Sa bagay, this is the same school whose rabid supporters name themselves after an embarrassing disease.

Let's just put it this way. Most of us were expecting a lost going into this game with a slightly big margin. So we were impressed that the team showed something that we were not expecting -- to make the game tightly contested.
But whatever happens, the whole Lasallian community will always be behind the team. It is a matter of believing, it is a matter of having FAITH in the team.

before the season starts we dont know what we have. all we know is that ateneo is a "better" ball club because of the fact that their line-up is intact and they have the highly talked about rookies.
while us, we lost our two leaders in cholo and ty. plus, kish and oj are steady role players that left (not you ilad, you bought shame). our rookies are not that talked about unlike yours. heck, i dont even know who revilla is.
thats why i say i was impressed that we were not blown out because clearly DLSU can and will find a way to beat a team.

Yun ang favorite term nila.

before the season starts we dont know what we have. all we know is that ateneo is a "better" ball club because of the fact that their line-up is intact and they have the highly talked about rookies.
while us, we lost our two leaders in cholo and ty. plus, kish and oj are steady role players that left (not you ilad, you bought shame). our rookies are not that talked about unlike yours. heck, i dont even know who revilla is.
thats why i say i was impressed that we were not blown out because clearly DLSU can and will find a way to beat a team.
after the game, after the smoke is clear, we're not bad as i imagined. we have a shot to have a back to back. *okay*
ok na pundit?

At the end of the day, unless your Eagles win the whole damn thing. Your team will be ridiculed again by Boom Gonzales. And of course, you will be the ultimate laughingstock in all of UAAP PEX
Save your bravado when your team ACTUALLY wins the title. After all, your team is not financially supported by MVP to just settle for six or more straight Final Four appearances.
Unless you actually think being the Final Four for six or more seasons is the ultimate sign of sports excellency. If you do think so, which is the idea you're flouting here not just in this thread or in the other threads nowadays, we actually feel sorry for you.
At least if the Eagles fall short again, Mr. Dodobird will leave with his integrity intact. I cannot honestly say the same for your case. :naughty:

Everyone, relax. Pundit is just being true to his form and upbringing. Remember, he already stated that DLSU will follow FEU's history of winning a championship and not making the Final Four the following year. Let's just stick to that as his prediction and at the end of the season, let's all see if his words are truly worth reading. Until then, bahala na kayo.

i like where ateneo, oops, The ateneo is starting the season---> at the top, #1 or #2. it's been consistently that way the past 3 to 4 years or so. ateneo oops The ateneo will again end this years 2-round elims ranked up there, with la salle safely positioned for the ambush at #3 or #4. then we enter the gates of the final 4, la salle's favorite playground.... (play beethoven's 5th)
we are all too familiar how this scenario ends, even without dlsu around.

What a loser this guy is... Ateneo won ages ago...2002 to be exact. Back then Gas prices are still around 30 pesos. Si Mac Cardona Sophomore pa lang nun... ngayon nasa PBA na. Ateneo I believe has some of the most talented people money can buy, JC Intal, Chris Tiu and the likes pero wala silang will to win. Something La Salle lacked when they used to have Jason Webb in the early 90's rivalry with UST. It will come to Ateneo but I dont think that will be NOW. 2-0 pa nga lang kayo sa season your bragging about it na agad. Look what DLSU did to UE last season. and what Ateneo did to La Salle during 2002. Until we see the end results, stop bashing and fighting. Why dont you go to the Ateneo thread and make some friends there instead? Is that how you live your life? Naghahanap ka ng kaaway? Then I feel sorry for you man. Obviously you dont have a girl to get you laid. Or friends to keep you company. I bet your just one of them random nerds walking around the campus and talking **** in the internet claiming he has a 12 inch d*ck. Go get some friends man, Id rather read nice things in this forum about the Green Archers than you clogging it up. If magreply ka sa post ko, ok lang hindi na koa magrereply ulit.
