Yup! Mas ok pa din talaga yung victory party last year. We didn't try to burn or diss anyone even their names. Pure clean fun. Sumayaw lang si Bigote. I am expecting a lot of ateneans barraging here with the litanya that goes "we were just having fun pangalan lang yun" or "pikon na naman kayo as always" with those pictures reaching our side.

Sobrang saya siguro nila. Let's find comfort in the fact that we don't diss players of opposing teams pag tayo ang nagcha champion.

Animo Ateneo, such class pare and they proclaim that they're bastions of morality? I recall i have friend kasi sa Ateneo blue paddlers, nun sa bonfire nila because they won the women's basketball last year. Hehehe talk about being bitter. I bet la salle will get again its vindication next season. anyway thanks to alliv for taking those pics

Sour grapes, what else
Ding Marcelo, Manila Bulletin

La Salle could have gone out with its head high during the championship
series.

But leave it to coach Franz Pumaren to stain a great game and an exceptional
Ateneo victory--and to damage his own credibility--by claiming that bad
officiating did the Green Archers in.

Well, I can’t blame the guy. He’s got to justify the loss, find a scapegoat
and what better scapegoat than the referees. It would be shameful if the
school shared this misconception and allow this coach to rant about
officiating instead of saying that his team will come back next year and
play better.

He did not blame himself, did not blame his players who panicked and played
selfish and, at times, arrogant, he blamed the referees. In doing so, he
missed a golden chance to rise above petty partisanship and behave like a
true gentleman.

By doing so, he made his players think that they are better than their
opponents although they lost fair and square; and by doing so he tried to
convince the La Salle community that they’ve been cheated. What kind of
coach is this? Is he talking truthfully or is he simply trying to save his
job?

The referees weren’t perfect, that’s for sure. They called a very tight game
worried perhaps that it might deteriorate to the point they would lose
control. It just happened that Ateneo adjusted to the referees, La Salle did
not.

From a neutral standpoint, there were no glaring errors that would merit the
post-game tirade of Pumaren, or any call by the referee that would have
altered the outcome of the game.

Instead of coming out and praising the Blue Eagles for being the better team
he now claims things would have been different had the referees been less
whistle happy.

His claim of referees being biased or incompetent would not have been
laughable had La Salle won a game against Ateneo this season. As it is, La
Salle lost all four encounters. Also, his claim that La Salle could have won
the game would have been believable if La Salle did not have to struggle to
make it to the Final 4 and take the second seeding through playoffs.

Instead of being grateful for having gone this far with an overachieving
team, Pumaren tried to deflect the loss from his own shortcomings to his own
perception that the referees "decided the game."

What an unsportsmanlike gesture.

Imagine Pumaren saying the game was scripted for an Ateneo win. And then
said he’s not sour-graping. What do you call that?

Pumaren, should learn how to accept defeat. These things come naturally. And
those are values taught in La Salle schools–that you can’t win every day and
every game. Apparently he was off playing basketball when these values were
the topics in his classroom.

Besides, when he was winning all those games and all those titles, nobody
blamed the referees even when many calls were flawed.

What makes La Salle-Ateneo games special is oftentimes not the quality of
the games. It is, as has always been the case, the spirit that both schools
bring to the hard court. It is the never-say-die attitude that both teams
always bring in abundance that makes their games a treasure and always
memorable. This is the reason why games between these two schools are always
special and the reason why their rivalry is enduring. Everything is always
left on the court.

But Pumaren had to spoil it.

Maybe La Salle should assess his coaching status. Remember that he’s the
same guy who was in charge when the school was suspended for bringing in two
ineligible players three years ago resulting in embarrassment and the return
of a championship trophy.

Had his school been less protective, Pumaren, who claimed to be innocent and
a non-participant in the scandal, should have been consigned to oblivion a
long time ago.

But he’s still there, ruining his own reputation and that of La Salle's.

Share ko lang...

Go, Ateneo!!!

I totally agree that Coach Franz Pumaren was totally unsportsmanlike in not even accepting the runner up prize in the awarding ceremonies of the title-clinching game 2 for Ateneo. Does he know he is twice the loser for that bratty gesture? When will he be mature enough to accept defeat gracefully ? You can't win them all. And even if his accusations about poor officiating holds some water, that's all part of the breaks. **** sometimes happen. But you deal with them like a man.

To think that he should be a leader of the La Salle team and that he should teach his wards some class.

WTF! Are you blind? Do you know how to play basketball?

Answer to Ateneo's title bid: Mr. Narvasa

1. Technical on Pumaren for not wearing ID while Pido also did the same before hand.

2. Suspending ref during La Salle won games.

3. 2 dubious technical fouls on Rico

5. Ateneo got 28 Ft's and La Salle got only 8 for the whole game due to penalty.

Good Job Mr. Nerdvasa!!! You just won a half baked championship for Ateneo!!!

blue&green
Oct 3, 2008, 12:42 AM
@Solid

Sorry bro but the logic is just not right..

1) The fact is that the refs did not see Pido. Pido even had the guts to say that he'll accept the Ts in their next match. You would not let a person, let's say person A, you saw murder someone just because he gave you the reason that another person, person B, did the same thing but was not penalized, would you?

2.) Did he have a reason to suspend those refs?

3.) The second one may be dubious but the first?? Come on, Rico is a known trash-talker. And talking-trash, when caught, will merit a warning or a technical most of the time. Rico's reputation got him those Ts.

4.) I assume you play basketball. You do know that when you push and shove, refs would call a foul, don't you? And this would be more emphasized if there is a no hand-check rule. Second, you do know that a perimeter shooting team will almost always get less fouls, right? Why would a defending player foul a person taking a perimeter shot or a 3-point shot? Ateneo is a pound-it-inside-the-paint this season and those kinds of teams usually gets more fouls...

You ought to give credit where credit is due..

The Secret History of the Jesuits
Author: Edmond Paris

Secrets the Jesuits don't want Christians to know

Out of Europe, a voice is heard from the secular world that documents historically the same information told by ex-priests. The author exposes the Vatican's involvement in world politics, intrigues, and the fomenting of wars throughout history. It appears, beyond any doubt, that the Roman Catholic institution is not a Christian church and never was. The poor Roman Catholic people have been betrayed by her and are facing spiritual disaster. Paris shows that Rome is responsible for the two great world wars.

Author Edmond Paris explains why he wrote this book...

"The public is practically unaware of the overwhelming responsibility carried by the Vatican and its Jesuits in the start of the two world wars -- a situation which may be explained in part by the gigantic finances at the disposition of the Vatican and its Jesuits, giving them power in so many spheres, especially since the last conflict."

"In fact, the part they took in those tragic events has hardly been mentioned until the present time, except by apologists eager to disguise it. It is with the aim of rectifying this and establishing the true facts that we present in this and other books the political activity of the Vatican during the contemporary -- activity which mutually concerns the Jesuits."

"This study is based on irrefutable archive documents, publications from well-known political personalities, diplomats, ambassadors and eminent writers, most of whom are Catholics, even attested by the imprimatur."

NCAA is old news, UAAP na ang bida ngayon.

Sports ba o education?

Okei fine ncaa is a major Philippine sports leage, pero palagay ko NCAA would always and forever be behind the shadow of UAAP.

At the end of the day, sports lang yan. Same with other UAAP schools. Sad but true.

NCAA is second nalang, if not third, fourth, etc.

NCAA had it's moment of glory...

As seen clearly in the pictues, one of the pieces of wood had James Mangahas' name on it, yung idol ni Gospel of Judas.

After a 20 point performance against FEU, Mangahas suddenly choked in the Finals against Ateneo.

Who wouldn't choke, literally, after getting a ball emphatically stuffed down one's throat courtesy of a monster block by Nonoy Baclao in Game 1?

After eating that basketball, wala nang ganang kumain si Mangahas kaya nanghina siya nung Game 2. Halos walang contribution.

Ateneo already won, they're done with the bonfire, the Ateneans are happy now. La Salle lost, they've danced the Locomotion and we are already getting on with our lives now. Ano pa ba gusto niyo? Technically, most of the bench players went awol or fishing. They were missing! It's like what happened to the Lakers' bench mob against the Celtics. They went fishing in the heat of the action.

I know there is going to be a Bantay Bata Invitational battle between the NCAA VS UAAP pero really, madala ba naman sa personalan? I find this debate pointless to say the least. Setting aside school pride. This is a question focused on the athletic capabilites, not on the academic and personal sense. \

Backtracking to some posts, makikita ko may sasagot, eh kasi mas magaling ito dahil may import etc. tapos biglang may sasagot eh squatter kasi kayo, or something like that (I pity the idiot that answered that way). Ang layo eh, what was supposed to be a friendly debate on the athletic capabilities of the league is turning out to be a personal war on the people inside these schools. Plain foolish if you ask me. I am sorry, I know most of us have moved on, but I just need to give my reply to this.

@Solid

1. Not seeing is different from choosing not to see. They saw Coach Franz and yet they didn't see Coach Pido. If that rule was that important, then they ought to be seeing very clearly---all the coaches. Given that the UE-UST game was played on opening day, with everyone gung-ho when a season starts, it is will all the more reason that they should have seen coach pido. But neither the refereees nor Commissioner saw Coach Pido's infration, and that was supposed to be a major omission. Now, suddenly, Chito Narvasa and the referees saw Coach Franz the following day?

The analogy is way off the mark. The point is, if you are going to enforce a rule, then enforce it to everyone. No one is talking about evading the sanction. As far as I know, Coach Franz was already slapped a technical and Chris Tiu given the charity shots. Coach Pumaren, and the La Salle supporters, of course, would definitely question the call. So the issue is had Chito Narvasa sufficiently explained the inconsistency?

The act of meting out a penalty to one person and not to another, who had the same omission, smacks of arbitrariness, caprice and whim.

2.) Did he have a reason to suspend those refs?

According to Commissioner Narvasa, the ref in the first DLSU-FEU game admitted his lapses. In the 2nd DLSU-FEU game, the ref was suspended for giving a technical on Coach Glenn, saying that the said refereed did not have the proper mental atitude (or something like that) to perform his function.

Bad calls are being called all the time. Why would then Narvasa suddenly force a referee to admit his "crime" and then suspend him? Many teams have complained against officiating before, but no action was made to discipline or suspend the referees, not even by the UAAP Board or by the commissioner. But now, here comes Narvasa, the hero. Incidentally, he acted on DLSU-FEU games. Incidentally too, the ID issue was a La Salle game.

Coaches complain of poor officiating all the time, with Coach Pido even showing a rare burst of anger inside the press room. But did Narvasa care about that? No, well, he just chose to "discipline" those who officiated the DLSU-FEU games.

How about the other ref, "mental attitude?" come on, Coach Glenn was berating the ref the whole time. Mahahalikan na ni Coach Glenn yung ref. Again, Narvasa comes to the rescue. Suspending the ref for that technical foul on Capacio? Come on. The only good it did was to make referees more wary of calling for DLSU. Oh, and did I mention DLSU? Yes, funny, Narvasa chose to act again in a DLSU game. Three strikes? Coincidence? Isolated incident?

3.) The second one may be dubious but the first?? Come on, Rico is a known trash-talker. And talking-trash, when caught, will merit a warning or a technical most of the time. Rico's reputation got him those Ts.

Thank you for acknowledging the questionability of the 2nd TF. With regard to the first TF, I go back to my earlier point--this is a case of choosing which things to see. This game is so important, heck, this is the Finals. Thus, all eyes should be open. Maybe, the Green Archers were just damn too unlucky that their acts were being noticed but those of the Blue Eagles weren't. Good job for referee no. 12 for keeping an eye on Rico. But the other refs should have also kept their eye on the Eagles especially Ryan Buenafe.

[/quote]

Well, I will agree with you on this one.

Ateneo apologizes over bonfire incident

By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 02:05:00 10/06/2008

MANILA, Philippines—A recent Ateneo bonfire celebration has added fuel to the varsity animosity between the Blue Eagles and the De La Salle University Green Archers, prompting an apology from top officials of the Loyola-based school.

Ateneo de Manila University president Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, SJ, recently apologized to the La Sallian community for an irreverent incident during the bonfire on the Ateneo campus last Sept. 30 to celebrate the UAAP championship won by the Eagles at the expense of the Archers.

Some of the firewood used at the bonfire had the names of the entire La Salle roster bannered by JV Casio, Rico Maierhofer and coach Franz Pumaren.

"Despite our rivalries in sports, we are both committed to Christian values and what was done is certainly a violation of values we share," Nebres said in a letter to De La Salle University System president Br. Armin Luistro, FSC, dated Oct. 2.

As reports and photos of the incident circulated in blogs and online basketball forums, students and alumni from La Salle, and even Ateneo, branded the act distasteful regardless of the rivalry between the two elite squads.

Nebres said none of the school officials "saw it ahead of time, because the wood pile was covered by a tarp against the rain until the time came to light it."

An alumnus already claimed responsibility for "producing the materials" and apologized to Nebres for "the backlash it created."

"Our community accepted [Ateneo's apology]," Br. Bernie Oca, FSC, La Salle's representative to the UAAP board, said Sunday. "We are also awaiting the results of their investigations which they said they will do."

So the issue is had Chito Narvasa sufficiently explained the inconsistency?

The act of meting out a penalty to one person and not to another, who had the same omission, smacks of arbitrariness, caprice and whim.

First, throwing accusations will get us nowhere. I believe that they already said that they didn't see Coach Pido. Now, if you insist that they "chose not to see" him, then the burden of proof is with you. Second, in the same sense, with everyone so excited about the start of the league, it could have been that they really didn't see him. Remember, the referees were given all the time to see Coach Franz (due to the long program regarding Pac and Agent 0) and the same cannot be said with the UE-UST game. Third, as I've said, you can't let a murderer go when he says "bakit siya hindi mo hinuli e pareho lang kami ng ginawa". Fourth, just like what Coach Pido said right after, do not use him as a reason. The man was even willing to be assessed a technical in their next game. Last, you cited one example, does that mean that the rule didn't apply to all? The fact of the matter is that only 2 coaches did the infraction and 1 was caught. In the words of Coach Pido, don't use him as a reason.

Didn't watch that game so I don't like to comment on that one. I'm still wondering why Lasallians keep on complaining when it is a fact that a crucial win of DLSU came with a lot of help from the official and that created the tie between FEU and DLSU.

Thank you for acknowledging the questionability of the 2nd TF. With regard to the first TF, I go back to my earlier point--this is a case of choosing which things to see. This game is so important, heck, this is the Finals. Thus, all eyes should be open. Yes it's questionable. Going back to my point, those technicals were given to Rico because of his REPUTATION. Remember, in basketball, reputation plays a big role. If JV was the one talking like that, I doubt if he'll be given a T. The best that Ateneo could have gotten was a warning. If you keep up with that argument of choosing what to see and pointing out Buenafe, then it should also be pointed out that Bader should have been given a T along with James Mangahas.

Well, I will agree with you on this one.

Thank You.:)

Oo nga, Rico has been a big factor kung bakit nakarating ang La Salle sa championship.

I mean, why not develop players who can keep their cool when playing very important games especially during crucial moments instead of players na dinadaan sa yabang at trash talk ang laro imbes na mag-focus para maipanalo ang team.

I know for a fact that outside the court, rico is a very nice and humble guy. I have a male Atenean friend who could attest to that. He worked with him for a Nike ad and there is no angas factor in him.

Cardona and Yeo are really walking models of arrogance. But not Rico. I think he's just often misunderstood.

I didn't really get the gif file Yakhouba posted. Did Rico do something bad there? It doesn't work well here. It looked like he was just jumping.

Look, I didn't say Rico is without flaws. He sure needs to control his emotions more. Sometimes, emotions do get the better of us. And that doesn't happen to Rico alone.

Sometimes his goofy nature on the court rubs off as arrogance to some people. I'm just saying off court, he's a nice dude who doesn't have a star complex. I've seen players who bring their game attitude around campus and elsewhere, but Rico isn't one of them. In fact we have a nice set of Archers now :)

Ateneo, UP rise in 2008 world university rankings *okay*

Two local universities, the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) and the University of the Philippines (UP), saw their rankings rise in The Times Higher Education - QS (THE-QS) World University Rankings 2008, a leading global ranking of higher education institutions.

In the overall rankings released Monday, Ateneo rose from number 451 in 2007 to number 254 this year *okay*, while UP rose from 398 last year to 276.

The THE-QS World University Rankings are based on data gathered in the following categories: peer academic review, recruiter review, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, student-faculty ratio, and research citations per faculty.

Ateneo had an overall score of 48.0 out of 100, up from 30.8 last year, while UP posted a 45.9 overall score, up from 34.7 last year.

Ateneo was tied with Spain's Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, while UP was tied with Germany's Universitat Ulm and Universitat Wurzburg, and the United States' Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

The two universities also figured in the subject-specific rankings for the first time.

Ateneo and UP were both ranked in the top 100 Arts and Humanities institutions worldwide: ADMU was ranked number 79 *okay*, while UP was at number 82, along with the University of Notre Dame in the US.

ADMU, UP, and another local university, De La Salle University, were also part of the 100 institutions with the highest employer review scores.

Ateneo was rank 76 in employer review *okay*, tied with the University of Western Australia, with a score of 88; UP was tied with the University of North Carolina at rank 82, with a score of 87; and DLSU was at rank 92 :depressed:, with a score of 84.

In the overall rankings, universities in the United States and the United Kingdom, led by Harvard University at rank 1, continue to dominate the rankings. The highest-ranked Asian university was the University of Tokyo in Japan (19), while the National University of Singapore (30) was the highest-ranked for Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile, two other Philippine institutions - the University of Santo Tomas and the De La Salle University (:depressed:) - were part of the group ranked 401-500.

"Further down the rankings, fewer data are available to evaluate each university and the statistical appropriateness of discerning one university from the next begins to decay. Responses for institutions in our survey drop off exponentially from the top of the table, by the time it gets past 400 the results become highly sensitive to error. As a result, precise positions beyond 400, are not published :depressed:," QS explained in its rankings tally in topuniversities.com.

Now in its fifth year, the research is conducted and compiled by QS Quacquarelli Symonds and features in print in Times Higher Education on 9th October and online on the QS web site.
