No, it doesn't hurt to be a Lasallian even if we lost. It's bringing us closer and coping up with how the refs screwed the team (next time teach your refs to stop look and listen) and how ateneans are turning the no-show in the awarding as a character trial. It's been hard but we're all right. We're coping up with the loss.

Im ok with the loss as we lost to the best team this season.

yeah, the season was emotional, it made me shed a tear one time, but it was not because of the loss, it was during our half-time performance wherein peps of different lasalle schools lined up before us.

The Times Higher Education Survey of World Universities came out just recently with their 2007 rankings. This year, the University of the Philippines Diliman (Rank 398) and the Ateneo de Manila University (Rank 451) are the only two Philippine universities in the top 500. - Where's La Salle?


Michael Tan wrote about this very same survey years ago in his column in the Inquirer when Ateneo ranked several points below La Salle. This drew reactions from the alumni and parents and asked Fr. Nebres why Ateneo ranked lower than La Salle. FR. JOAQUIN BERNAS, SJ answered in behalf of Ateneo in his own column in the Inquirer and said that Ateneo should not give much weight to The Times Higher Education Survey of World Universities because this survey considers many non-academic factors.

Several years ago, the Asia Week listed DLSU Graduate School of Business in the top 25 schools in Asia.

By the way, to gain level IV status, a university must have 7 centers of excellence. And, two of those centers of excellence are the Literature and Psychology Departments, which are supposed to be the strengths of the Ateneo.

True, DLSU was slapped for it and in a sense forgiven for their "crime" (notice the quotation marks, so do not jump up and start a skewed discussion on crime and shortcomings) since they were allowed to play again in the UAAP. Were they not "forgiven" then I suppose they would not be playing today in the UAAP.

So yes, punished and forgiven. But have the sins been forgotten? Hardly. and that, in my opinion, is a greater punishment than being suspended for an entire year for the shortcomings of the DLSU basketball program.

Assuming that such practices do occur in ateneo then it would be only a matter of time that the ateneans get caught right (we want to believe in a just world after all)? so maybe until the time that they do get caught, you may want to reserve your hmmm...choice words

However, until then, the way it stands to me at least is that only DLSU has been sanctioned with a suspension so far whether or not they had the intention of correcting a mistake. As such, it is only DLSU that has to live with the reality of being labeled as (no i will not refer to DLSU as cheats) having committed a grave infraction against UAAP rules and regulations.

For clarification, ADMU and UP DOESN'T acknowledge the THES-QS, since the survey's parameters are very questionable. So is every other ranking that puts La Salle (and even UST) over Ateneo. The other ranking, which name escapes me right now, is earning flak for basing rankings to parameters similar to those determining popularity contests. AFAIK, the reason La Salle and UST is over Ateneo in terms of CHED rankings is that it is based on the number of Centers of Excellence in that school, which is based on the courses. And La Salle and UST has more courses than Ateneo, no doubt, so they have more CoEs. (I was puzzled at first because Ateneo has no courses in Music, Nursing, HRM, and any other course common in other universities) But as far as ranking for the best university is concerned, the academe has yet to come out with a concrete ranking.

with regards to oj cua, this was supposed to be his final year. during the summer leagues, he asked an assistant coach (oj didnt mention who) if he could be late for the next practice becuase he will be coming from puerto galera.

the assistant coach agreed. when he came to the practice around 30 min late, coach franz berated him. bakit daw siya late. he explained his side but coach franz said that he should ask permission from him directly.

he was banned from playing from the summer league. disheartened, he quit the team. his player privileges were stripped and that is that.

imho, it think oj's heart does not belong to basketball. it is his older brother who is more passionate about bball. unfortunately, it is oj who is blessed with more skill.

He was accompanied by his mother who told the staff there that the boy was last enrolled at Philippine Christian University, but would like to transfer that school year to La Salle.

The mother said her son showed good promise as a basketball player and in all likelihood may follow the footsteps of his older brother who played varsity ball also at the De La Salle University. She said she brought his report card so he could take whatever entrance examination was necessary to get into the school.

The staff gave the boy one swift look then escorted the pair to the principal’s office.

The mother handed the report card to the school official a bit shyly.

The principal examined the contents, then gave it back to the mother. He said the boy’s grades were too low, he cannot even qualify to take the entrance exams.

Mother and son left the school totally downhearted. The boy was unheard of for a long time.

Some years later, however, the boy would resurface in the UAAP wearing a blue uniform. By this time he had metamorphosed into an adult with rippling muscles and hairy legs. He had also grown in height and weight.

But a La Salle staff member recognized him as the boy who wanted to play for the school many years ago.

He now wonders if his school’s destiny would have been reversed, for this season at least, if the once gangling youth was accepted into the academe.

Highly instrumental in leading his team to the UAAP title this season, the boy, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, was voted most valuable player of the league.

Balita ko si Baclao din daw e (not confirmed). He was discovered by Rep. Monico Puentebella playing in Negors pero hindi nalang kinuha kasi hindi raw papasa sa DLSU. Is this ture?

with regards to oj cua, this was supposed to be his final year. during the summer leagues, he asked an assistant coach (oj didnt mention who) if he could be late for the next practice becuase he will be coming from puerto galera.

the assistant coach agreed. when he came to the practice around 30 min late, coach franz berated him. bakit daw siya late. he explained his side but coach franz said that he should ask permission from him directly.

he was banned from playing from the summer league. disheartened, he quit the team. his player privileges were stripped and that is that.

imho, it think oj's heart does not belong to basketball. it is his older brother who is more passionate about bball. unfortunately, it is oj who is blessed with more skill.

La Salle could have gone out with its head high during the championship
series.

But leave it to coach Franz Pumaren to stain a great game and an exceptional
Ateneo victory--and to damage his own credibility--by claiming that bad
officiating did the Green Archers in.

Well, I can’t blame the guy. He’s got to justify the loss, find a scapegoat
and what better scapegoat than the referees. It would be shameful if the
school shared this misconception and allow this coach to rant about
officiating instead of saying that his team will come back next year and
play better.

He did not blame himself, did not blame his players who panicked and played
selfish and, at times, arrogant, he blamed the referees. In doing so, he
missed a golden chance to rise above petty partisanship and behave like a
true gentleman.

By doing so, he made his players think that they are better than their
opponents although they lost fair and square; and by doing so he tried to
convince the La Salle community that they’ve been cheated. What kind of
coach is this? Is he talking truthfully or is he simply trying to save his
job?

The referees weren’t perfect, that’s for sure. They called a very tight game
worried perhaps that it might deteriorate to the point they would lose
control. It just happened that Ateneo adjusted to the referees, La Salle did
not.

From a neutral standpoint, there were no glaring errors that would merit the
post-game tirade of Pumaren, or any call by the referee that would have
altered the outcome of the game.

Instead of coming out and praising the Blue Eagles for being the better team
he now claims things would have been different had the referees been less
whistle happy.

His claim of referees being biased or incompetent would not have been
laughable had La Salle won a game against Ateneo this season. As it is, La
Salle lost all four encounters. Also, his claim that La Salle could have won
the game would have been believable if La Salle did not have to struggle to
make it to the Final 4 and take the second seeding through playoffs.

Instead of being grateful for having gone this far with an overachieving
team, Pumaren tried to deflect the loss from his own shortcomings to his own
perception that the referees "decided the game."

What an unsportsmanlike gesture.

Imagine Pumaren saying the game was scripted for an Ateneo win. And then
said he’s not sour-graping. What do you call that?

Pumaren, should learn how to accept defeat. These things come naturally. And
those are values taught in La Salle schools–that you can’t win every day and
every game. Apparently he was off playing basketball when these values were
the topics in his classroom.

Besides, when he was winning all those games and all those titles, nobody
blamed the referees even when many calls were flawed.

What makes La Salle-Ateneo games special is oftentimes not the quality of
the games. It is, as has always been the case, the spirit that both schools
bring to the hard court. It is the never-say-die attitude that both teams
always bring in abundance that makes their games a treasure and always
memorable. This is the reason why games between these two schools are always
special and the reason why their rivalry is enduring. Everything is always
left on the court.

But Pumaren had to spoil it.

Maybe La Salle should assess his coaching status. Remember that he’s the
same guy who was in charge when the school was suspended for bringing in two
ineligible players three years ago resulting in embarrassment and the return
of a championship trophy.

Had his school been less protective, Pumaren, who claimed to be innocent and
a non-participant in the scandal, should have been consigned to oblivion a
long time ago.

But he’s still there, ruining his own reputation and that of La Salle's.

yes that picture was just last saturday in embassy. rico has nothing against rabeh, it really is the ref not the players. mr. Ding Marcelo of Manila Bulletin if it wasn't a scripted game then why would both jvee and rico be out of the game? let me remind you that in game 1 rico scored 17 and jvee scored 20 while the rest of the team scored only 24. it was hella scripted. remove-the-2-best-players-from-the-game is what they were all about. besides whatever.. even the ateneans felt it. if they wanna win this way fine by me. :) we didn't think we'd win anyway... we just wanted a good game. and please just don't blame coach franz. he got the team this far.
