Can he play during season 72? I read somewhere that a player can only play in the filoil tournament if you're eligible to play in the upcoming college season. Maybe I'm wrong or I misread.

Peace. :)

DLSU Students:
Duque Lauds De La Salle University Manila for Voluntarily Suspending Classes After Student Turns Positive for A(H1N1)
June 3, 2009
DOH Secretary Duque today lauded school authorities of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila at Taft Avenue for implementing a self-imposed temporary suspension of classes for 10 days beginning today after an international exchange student tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1).
This is in consonance with Response Level 3 of the Guidelines on A (H1N1) for schools which state that school authorities should suspend classes after detection of at least one confirmed case and there is no sustained community transmission.
The new confirmed case is a 21 year-old female foreign student who arrived in the country last May 12. According to DLSU officials, classes officially started on May 25 for the first trimester of this school year. The foreign student only reported very mild symptoms on May 29 which came to the attention of school authorities.
The student consulted a health facility on May 31where she was examined and tested for the presence of the virus through a throat swab. The specimen turned positive for A (H1N1) as confirmed today by RITM.
Duque said that the DOH is currently investigating and doing contact tracing to see if there were other exposed individuals related to this new case. Initial findings reveal that there is very limited exposure of other students to the confirmed case and that both DOH and school authorities can trace them.
Meanwhile, Duque already met the officials of DLSU to discuss the situation and come up with the next steps to prevent the spread of the virus to other students, faculty and other school staff.
Brother Armin Luistro FSC, President and Chancellor of the De La Salle University, expressed his full cooperation with the DOH on the ongoing containment measures and said that DLSU will immediately invoke the recommended measures contained in the Response Level System in Schools initially released by the DOH last May 31.
Starting tomorrow, June 4, classes will be suspended at the University and will last until June 14 in accordance with the guidelines set by the DOH.
The De La Salle University has already informed the students and faculty who were in the same class as the confirmed case to do self-monitoring of symptoms at home and to report immediately at designated hotlines if they become ill.
Meanwhile, Secretary Duque appealed to these students and school staff to temporarily avoid going to malls and other crowded areas during the period of class suspension.
As a precautionary measure, although they do not belong to the affected classes, all other students, faculty and personnel of DLSU should consider self-monitoring and avoiding crowded gatherings as well.
Secretary Duque thanked the officials of DLSU for keeping their school clinic open for any consultation during the period of class suspension. Students and faculty are therefore advised to report any symptom at this clinic which will in turn refer the cases to designated DOH referral facilities when necessary.
To date, the total number of confirmed cases of a (H1N1) in the country is now at 22.
Duque said that the three previously reported confirmed cases will be discharged today. To date, 14 of the 22 confirmed cases have already been sent home.
Since May 1, 2009, the DOH has monitored a total of 401 CUOs. Of these, 22 are positive A(H1N1) cases, 78 have pending laboratory results, and 301 are negative for A(H1N1) and have been discarded. There are 56 new Cases Under Observation (CUOs) today.
In their latest report, the World Health Organization reported 1,900 new cases and 16 deaths. There are now a total of 17,410 cases and 115 deaths from 62 reporting countries.

Dull Arrows?
A number of Lasallians in the community are alarmed with the rut the De La Salle Green Archers are experiencing right now. Well, when was the last time you heard they went on a five-game losing streak?
The slump started with a 73-74 squeaker against Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila on May 22 in the Nike Summer League. This was followed by another heartbreaker against Far Eastern University also in the NSL.
To make matters worse were two routs courtesy of San Sebastian College-Recoletos and Adamson University in the FilOil-Flying V Preseason Manny V. Pangilinan Cup last week. Just yesterday, the Archers dropped out of the NSL for good after a double overtime loss to the Pirates.
Granted it is a running tally of the two preseason leagues they are participating in, still it is a cause for concern. Here are some factors which I consider are key points in the Green Archers’ recent fall in performance.
Fatigue. After they returned from their training camp in Chicago, this was being pointed out as culprit number one as the team adjusted from the time difference and the weather. But that could not be totally the case since the Archers won their first two games back albeit showing some sluggishness, especially now that they have been already in the country for almost three weeks.
Some say it is because they were playing games in almost near succession having to make up from the backlog they accumulated that the Archers are burning themselves out early. This now leads us to the next point.
Scheduling. From their first week back, they played three games in the NSL, winning two. They were supposed to face University of the East in the FilOil-Flying V tourney a day after losing to Lyceum in the NSL.
Somewhat of a providence, UE requested to postpone the game since the core of the team will also play on the same day for Cobra Energy in the PBL. However, that meant a back-to-back today.
If they have won in the knockout match against the Pirates, it would be four games straight capped by Colegio de San Juan de Letran on Friday. One would need NBA-level conditioning to be able to play consistently four days straight.
Then there was this snafu in the FEU game where team management was not aware that the match was moved to an earlier time.
But this would be just a cop out since almost all teams which are participating in at least two leagues would go through these stretches in their schedules, not counting the players who are pulling off double or triple duty for the National Team and in the PBL.
Lack of focus. Some quarters claim that since classes already started, the players’ attention has been divided between hitting the books and pounding the hardcourt and there was little transition in between. It was like they were playing basketball the whole summer then here comes their academic load out in the corner.
And I say, tell that to Mapua Institute of Technology which has a quarterly academic calendar. But I digress.
There is no point to this since none of our players have commitments other than to De La Salle.
Lack of overall effort. Considering how the schedule of the remaining games panned out, there is this little devil in me who is saying that the Archers are pacing themselves so that they do not totally burn themselves out. Their lackluster start against the Stags attests to that. The defense and the energy were not there. It was as if they were just running around to get it over and done with.
Which I quickly counter with the notion that the Archers never play just to compete and they always exert enough effort to at least go for the win and lose, not because they slacked off but because the other team just worked harder.
Feeling out period. Granted the team is still adjusting playing without its top scorer and top rebounder, the core has been practicing together for months now. Maybe they are still looking for the next leader who will step up or maybe they are still determining who will replace JVee Casio as the go-to guy. Or MAYBE the players are feeling the pressure as the competition for roster slots are in its tightest in years as a bumper crop of greenhorns eager to see action.
However, this is also true for almost all teams which are going through a transition, figuring out their rotation and whatever they are experimenting on.
Experimentation. If you have this much ammunition, you would want to find out what works best and maximize that. This is the quandary head coach Franz Pumaren is going through right now.
This was evident when they went to Maui Villanueva in the post in successive possessions against Lyceum-Manila. There were times when some players would go DNP-CD just because.
Going back to what I have said in the previous point, this is par for the course for almost everyone.
Endgame poise. In connection to the two previous points, there is an apparent vacuum on who would step up in the clutch. I have noticed that different players have topscored for the team, which is good in the team concept but sometimes a hole in the wall in the endgame.
Some supporters are clamoring that the veterans need to step up and deliver. Not that I am discounting the abilities of the older guys, but maybe the younger ones have a stronger fortitude when it comes to pressure packed situations.
We already have had players like those in the mold of Casio and Renren Ritualo who gave us memorable performances even if they were just rookies. And despite getting blocked by Larry Fonacier twice, then sophomore Mark Cardona showed what true grit is when he went for the shot in that game.
With every close shave the Archers encounter this preseason, it is a peg in the experience bank for the young ones and should be a driving motivation for the vets to step up and stand out.
It is hard to pinpoint what is actually bothering the green and white crew since I basically refuted myself in every point I made. The key to remember here is that a combination of all of these factors COULD BE the reason for the losing streak but they are not necessarily the only causes for all we know.
The light at the end of the tunnel in all of this is that it is still the preseason and the real war does not begin more than a month from now. That is ample time to make adjustments, fix whatever needs fixing, and at the same time, sharpen those dull arrows.

A doppleganger was released from the void to serve the Dark Crusade once more in it's time of need. Katchatore_ is it's name.
The timing couldn't get more perfect. Because of the tastelessness of the powers-at-be of this site, I (the revenant Necrophant) was banished back to the void even though it was stated that:
I come here not to cause upheaval but to announce that the MASTER's favored troll: Blackened_Heart will be interred in the THOMASIAN thread. This thread as well as it's related ones were a personal favorite of his.
Fortunately, due to the weak state of control the doppleganger katchatore_ had over itself. I, Necrophant Revenant supreme, was able to POSSESS it so I may continue my task: to preside over the burial ceremony of the now proclaimed "King of Trolls": Blackened_Heart

RIP Blackened_Heart
Your contributions to the Dark Crusade's cause has been great and may never be reached by any other troll. Even if your demise was untimely your legacy will live on the other trolls of the DarK Crusade. Your presence in the interwebs will be missed but you will be a welcome addition to the lost souls in the endless void. But fear not as your devotion to the MASTER, AHIG of Darkness, will give you eternal life and eternal servitude to the cause.
AHIG indeed uses all!

Here lies Blackened_Heart. Date of creation and banishment not important cause he will surely rise again.
However, for the unlucky dark crusaders who gave their life to the cause a memorial cairn will be erected to commemorate your valiant efforts against the enemies.

Katchatore is the real person. Katchatore_ is his doppleganger which was summoned by his actions inadvertently. I Necrophant have possessed the doppleganger to complete my tasks of burying the favored troll, Blackened_Heart. I as well as others in the Dark Crusade worship the MASTER, AHIG of darkness.
The MASTER's name stands for many things. But one of the most common thing explained is it stands for: ALL HOPE IS GONE.

Yup, seems to me that there is no leader of the team at this stage. I guess this the reason why Bagatsing, a sophomore, was chosen as team captain. No excuses, the Archers lost to a better team. Hope they improve as the league progresses. Can only hope for a final four appearance at this point.

2003 all over again...
I initially thought of it that way before the game started, but honestly I don't think this is the case. 2003 had JV Casio and Gatchalian who really distinguished themselves and really made you think these are stand-out rookies that made you say "wow" plus they had mac cardona then. This year, dlsu doesn't have anybody with the spunk and talent nearing that of Cardona and the rookies were abysmal in their first game.
Oh well, the rookies still have time to turn things around through the season because I can't see Mangahas, Barua, Kish Co and "wildshot" Malabes carrying this team. Webb and Atkins haven't showed they've improved.
Anybody thinks DLSU has been outrecruited by Ateneo, FEU and San Beda over the past few years?
Gospel of Judas

and yes they have been outmuscled with the recruits because i think franz looks for players who will fit and not just instantly talented players.

Jul 12, 2009, 01:10 AM
The game simply showed two important things. First, the pre-season games are totally different from the actual UAAP tourmnament. Secondly, la salle lost practically their entire offense and their spunk in defense with the departures of Casio, Maierhofer, and the injury of LA Revilla.
With these 3, that's at least 30points, 12rebounds, 8 assists, and all the intagibles these guys create.
I agree with the folks here that you cannot really compare the 2003 team with this years team. Even if la salle lost sta. maria, sharma, cortez, and some others back then, cardona and yeo were there. I don't see barua and mangahas to be near the talent and swagger of cardona and yeo.
for the sake of la salle basketball, they should pray that bringas just had first game jitters and not be another pj walsham. this guy needs to grow up really early because if he doesn't la salle is in big big trouble.
without a reliable inside presence, the backcourt of la salle will be easier to contain as what was shown by the UE game.
rockstaridol
Jul 12, 2009, 01:32 AM
The team also greatly cracked under pressure. Despite the embarrassing shooting, their defense was pretty good which made UE only lead by as much as 9 points. Come 4th quarter, :rotfl:
The Green Archers seriously needs another arrogant *** ie, Cardona and Maierhofer. I think am beginning to resent Rico for skipping his last year.
Come on Green Archers, sa doggie style win tayo magaling dati. You guys could do it again :glee:

the last time that DLSU actively recruited Blue Chippers was prolly during the 2003 season when they got the best haul of HS superstars like Casio, Arana, Cua, t@ng AND Tim Gatchalian, Mark Benitez. during the succeeding years, Pumaren got rookies who would fit into his system right away as supposed to getting the most talented players available.
this season, Pumaren made a recruiting coup by signing up almost the entire roster of the RP Youth Team that he also coached last year. PLUS getting Arvie Bringas -- heralded as the best HS player in the country as the cherry on top. is Pumaren counting on all these guys fitting into his "system" right away or did he recruit these players just because the opportunity presented itself? only time will tell if this drastic change in recruitment was the best thing to do.

(FAO)[1]
Yam is the common name for some species in the genus Dioscorea (family Dioscoreaceae). These are perennial herbaceous vines cultivated for the consumption of their starchy tubers in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania. There are hundreds of cultivars among the cultivated species.
The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) has traditionally been referred to as a "yam" in parts of the southern United States and Canada, but it is not part of the Dioscoreaceae family.
Although it is unclear which came first, the word yam is related to Portuguese inhame or Spanish ñame, which both ultimately derive from the Wolof word nyam, meaning "to sample" or "taste"; in other African languages it can also mean "to eat", e.g. yamyam and nyama in Hausa.[citation needed]
A Nigerian word for yam is adamwanga, meaning "Adamo's food". Adamo was a chief notorious for his ability to consume incredible amounts of food, and was even banned from a neighboring village for his refusal to stop.[1]
Yam tubers can grow up to 2.5 meters in length[2] and weigh up to 70 kg (150 pounds).
The vegetable has a rough skin which is difficult to peel, but which softens after heating. The skins vary in color from dark brown to light pink.
The majority of the vegetable is composed of a much softer substance known as the "meat". This substance ranges in color from white or yellow to purple or pink in ripe yams.
Yams are a primary agricultural commodity in West Africa and New Guinea. They were first cultivated in Africa and Asia about 8000 B.C.[citation needed] Due to their abundance and consequently, their importance to survival, the yam was highly regarded in Nigerian ceremonial culture and even worshiped.
Yams are still important for survival in these regions. The tubers can be stored up to six months without refrigeration, which makes them a valuable resource for the yearly period of food scarcity at the beginning of the wet season.
Yams are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Palpifer sordida.
Preparation
Tongan farmer showing off his prize yams
[edit] Africa
Yams of African species must be cooked to be safely eaten, because various natural substances in raw yams can cause illness if consumed. (Excessive skin contact with uncooked yam fluids can cause the skin to itch. If this occurs, a quick cold bath will stop the itching.) Preparing these species is a time-consuming process, involving several minutes of pounding, leaching, and boiling to remove the toxins.[citation needed] The most common cooking method in Western and Central Africa is "pounded yam".
Yams may be served fried, boiled or pounded into a fufu dough form.
[edit] The Philippines
In the Philippines, the purple ube variety of yam (Dioscorea alata, also known in India as ratalu or violet yam) is eaten as a sweetened dessert called halaya, and is also an ingredient in another Filipino dessert, halo halo.
[edit] Vietnam
In Vietnam, the same purple yam is used for preparing a special type of soup canh khoai mỡ or fatty yam soup. This involves mashing the yam and cooking it until very well-done.
[edit] Japan
An exception to the cooking rule is the Japanese mountain yam (Dioscorea opposita), known as nagaimo or yamaimo (山芋?) depending on the root shape.
Yams at Port-Vila market (Vanuatu)
It is eaten raw and grated, after only a relatively minimal preparation: the whole tubers are briefly soaked in a vinegar-water solution to neutralize irritant oxalate crystals found in their skin. The raw vegetable is starchy and bland, mucilaginous when grated, and may be eaten plain as a side dish, or added to noodles.
[edit] The West
'Yam powder' is available in the West from grocers specializing in African products, and may be used in a similar manner to instant mashed potato powder, although preparation is a little more difficult because of the tendency to form lumps. The 'yam powder' is sprinkled onto a pan containing a small amount of boiling water, and stirred vigorously. The resulting mixture is more filling than mashed potatoes, and is served with a heated sauce, such as tomato and chilli, poured onto it.

I'm not impressed yet. I think he only made 1 field goal while the rest are from freethrows that he collected during garbage time. He looks small for a 6'5 kid as he was dwarfed by reil who played like a small forward trapped in a center's body.

Arvie Bringas showing something is a welcome development. I think he'll gradually pick it up every game. It's hard but it's better than nothing. We can only hope that he learns faster under rapid fire.
The defense is not really the #1 problem of La Salle this season so far, it's how to put up points in the board.

I totally agree with you, blue_quenky. Fernandez was really an all-around player who, at 6-5, could play any position. Based on my experience in watching the UAAP for a long time already, I'd say Rabeh al-Hussaini can't even be considered as close to Benjie Paras and Jerry Codinera during their UAAP days. Siguro, puwede pa sigurong i-compare si Al-Hussaini kina Jun Limpot, Dennis Espino at Mark Telan. Definitely, no comparison pagdating kay Paras (who could have shackled even Sam Ekwe kung ang basehan ay yung playing style niya nung 80s).

It maybe too early to tell, but the manner in which the green archers were beaten is still very surprising. The way they performed is not up to level in which we here in the UAAP have been accustomed to, sure they can still be beaten but not in this level wherein they were outplayed in many levels.
But who knows, they might pick up they're game and be back in the hunt for the final 4 or even the championship.

2 games have passed and this is what I've observed
1.) Defense is ok, but the obvious lack of athleticism and post defense of our centers is hurting us a lot.
2.) Our reluctance to score is evident, which usually leads to "why-did-you-pass-it-to-me" moments (Kish Co being set-up for a jumper against FEU is just plain wrong)
3.) The only scenarios that are possible when Ferdinand gets the ball
- Catches the ball, pivot, rotate then travel
- Doesn't catch the ball, out of bounds
- Catches the ball, loses the ball, instant 2 pts for the other team
- Catches the ball and immediately travels
- catches the ball, pivot, rotate, miss badly
4.) At least our guards are getting the hang of free-throw shooting. Now if we can just teach Ferdi and Co.
5.) Rookies are growing, but not fast enough to merit a final four ticket this season (I do hope I'm wrong with this statement)
I hope we win against UP today :)

DeadHappiness
Jul 23, 2009, 11:08 AM
Due to the reluctance of our shooters and supposed "scorers"
Example:
- Atkins should find his shot. I'm not saying that he should be our volume shooter but a point guard should know when to pass and when to score
- Same idealogy applies to everyone. Bringas is getting his looks, but the rookie looks out of the game at certain times
- Nobody seems to fit the number one scorer profile
- We are a team of role-players. I know the we-don't-have-any-go-to-guy argument is getting repetitive, but it's what those 2 games show. It highlights the fact that we miss having Casio and Maierhoffer.

may gulay. nanalo nga ang DLSU, pero yung quality ng game was very poor. muntik pa nga sila matalo ng UP. pano pag Adu USTE pa nakalaban nila... tapos may ADMU, ewan ko na lang.
Sabi nga nung commentator during last 2 mins of 4th quarter wherein lamang ng 10pts. ang DLSU then naka 3pt UP, "sa pinapakitang offensive play ng DLSU eh pwede pa habulin ng UP ang lamang."
just saying this kasi nawala na yung excitement ng game pag dlsu ang kalaban. what's happening. I bet iba na coach ng DLSU next season.

Most likely. Not because of DLSU's performance in this season. Pumaren is being tapped by Herbert Bautista to be his candidate for Quezon City vice mayor next year.

wow... ganun pala yung... but it is too bad for the archers losing Franz Pumaren.... i bet high paid coach siya sa DLSU maraming nagbibigay sa kanya...and with Dindo... kulang pa siguro experience niya with the archer to maintain the level of play Franz is giving to the archers

The Archers need to improve a lot in order to reach the Final Four. They missed a lot of layups. They need to improve their shooting percentage. Bringas and Ferdinand need to learn to score near the basket at least. What can I say. They're out of sync. They improved a little in this game but considering they played UP, they should have beat them more easily.

73 points pero 32 percent shooting... not going to do it.

I hope the win yesterday will boost the confidence of the Archers- even if it's against UP- a win is still a win.
We need to bring back the "pinaka mayabang team sa buong mundo" title

Paraceratherium, also commonly known as Indricotherium or Baluchitherium (see taxonomic discussion below), was a genus of gigantic hornless rhinoceros-like mammals, belonging to the family of the Hyracodontidae. Their fossils have been found in many parts of Asia, including Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India, Mongolia, and China. It lived from the middle Oligocene to the early Miocene, roughly from 30 to 20 million years ago, when this region of Asia was covered in lush subtropical forests and woodlands.

Cynognathus was a metre-long predator of the Lower Triassic. It was one of the more mammal-like of the "mammal-like reptiles", a member of a grouping called Eucynodontia. The genus Cynognathus had an almost worldwide distribution. Fossils have so far been recovered from South Africa, South America, China and Antarctica.

Basilosaurus ("King Lizard") is a genus of cetacean that lived from 40 to 34 million years ago in the Late Eocene.[1] Its fossilized remains were first discovered in the southern United States (Louisiana), and were initially believed to be some sort of reptilian sea monster, hence the suffix -"saurus", but later it was found that wasn't the case.[2] Fossils from at least two other species of this taxon have been found in Egypt and Pakistan. Basilosaurus averaged about 18 meters (60 ft) in length, and is believed to have been the largest animal to have lived in its time.[3] It displayed an unparalleled degree of elongation compared with modern whales. Their very small vestigial hind limbs have also been a matter of interest for paleontologists. The species is the state fossil of Mississippi and Alabama.

Our next game against AdU will be crucial. The way I see it, this game will dictate the way we can carry our momentum and sustain the steadily growing confidence of our young Green Archers till the end of Round 1.
AdU is an able-contender who looks more poised to take a swipe at the last f4 spot compared to UST. I hope we win our next game :)
