MANILA, Philippines—Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) Chair Emmanuel Angeles on Thursday congratulated the four Philippine universities who made it to the The Times Higher Education-Quacquarelli Symonds (THE-QS) World University Rankings 2008, saying the institutions should do better next year.

Angeles said he was happy that the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), University of the Philippines (UP), De La Salle University (DLSU) and the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) made it to the world’s top 500 universities in the survey conducted by The Times Higher Education-Quacquarelli Symonds.

“I commend them for their achievement,” he said.

According to the survey released this week, Ateneo ranked 254th, leaping from its 400th and 500th position in the previous two years. Ateneo was sandwiched between London’s School of Oriental and African Studies and the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain.

UP, the country’s premier state university, was ranked 274th, up from its 398th place last year, getting a slot between two German universities, the University of Hamburg and Ülm University.

DLSU and UST, both Catholic and private universities along with Ateneo, were ranked 415th and 470th, respectively. In the past year, the two schools were out of the Top 500.

Angeles said that Philippine schools would get better rankings if they chose to advertise in the THE-QS’ publications. “I think if we can participate, the ranking would move forward,” he said.

Angeles, who also chairs the UP Board of Regents, rued UP’s second-place position behind the Jesuit-run Ateneo. This year was the first time that Ateneo overtook UP in the rankings.

UP did not join the THE-QS 2008 survey nor did it respond to the 2007 survey, contrary to an earlier report.

UP has questioned the validity of the 2008 rankings, saying the methodology was “problematic.” The university said the THE-QS refused to divulged where and how it got its data.

Angeles said UP could have ranked higher, had it not been for its budget problems. He said the survey took note of the institution’s budget, tuition, and the salaries it gave to its faculty and researchers.

“UP charges a small tuition, it has a smaller budget, and the salary scale of teachers is low,” Angeles said.

“Now that UP has a charter, the teachers will not be included in the Salary Standardization Law. They can have better salaries and possibly in the next year, we will be doing better,” he added.

“We are going to appeal to Congress to give UP a higher budget. We will work on it,” he said.

The UP system, which has its flagship campus in Diliman, Quezon City, is composed of seven constituent universities, with 12 campuses nationwide.

Anyway, yeah, I read some of his interviews on the net (some I found here in PEX) and he consistently says that he prioritizes or focuses on his studies and basketball. Nataranta lang ata ang mga ibang fans niya nung nalamang pumasok sa showbiz, nag-assume sila kaagad na iniwan na niya ang team. So far, yung cameo role lang naman ang ginawa niya (err..plus the SOP thing if that counts).

Does anyone know if they will definitely join the PCCL?

Oppss... I forgot to post my message here... uhm, I just want to remind all the La Sallians, Alumni, and fans that today is the 6th death anniversary of one of the member of the 1998-2001 Champion Team of DLSU Green Archers... let's pray for his soul... ^^
This post might seem very stupid since the late Miguelito "Migs" Gozum died 6 years ago but I just want to extend my condolences to his family and friends.
Back in 2002, He died at the age of 21 due to Arrhythmia and Bronchial Spasms then, Cardiac Arrest.
As a fan, I know he died not because of a failure he've done, but because he already accomplished his tasks in this world. I personally don't know him but I know that he touches a lot of heart when he was still alive. We will always remember you as an archer,a lasallian,a friend, a very promising basketball player, and a good son... I salute you, Mr. Migs Gozum!! May your ANIMO live forever!! (March, 15, 1981 - November, 8, 2002 +).

BTW can anyone confirm the story. I know everyone will say he's back and all. But I hear form a very reliable source the story. Simon asked if he can beg off the team for "modeling" then quickly(i don't know how quick) had a change of heart, but the thing is, Coach Franz, having ALL the options presently, refused. SO he's status is still up in the air.

I heard he's back practicing. But can anyone confirm if he is back with team?

Tsk tsk tsk... Bad decision Simon, look where is Mauie Roca now? ;)

Nov 17, 2008, 07:56 AM
There's no guaranteed spot for the team A. Everyone have to earn their spot during the training. That's a good thing about Coach Franz's system. Hindi pwede maging kampante ang mga players.

1) Hyram Bagatsing

4) Maui Villanueva
5) Manoj Chandumal
6) LA Revilla
7) Bader Malabes
8) Ferdinand

Note: Rico Maierhofer, James Mangahas and Rejan Lee will not play

Nothing was mentioned on Simon Atkins, which I think
was due to his focus on his studies.

ang hirap ng sitwasyon ko kahapon. being a product of both UP and La Salle, basta kapag nagharap ang dalawang teams ko sa UAAP, palagi akong neutral. masaya ako whatever the outcome is. :D

well anyway, congratulations to the Lady Spikers for winning over my other UAAP team, the Lady Maroons, in yesterday's game. :)

by the way, wala akong masabi when the girls sang the Alma Mater Hymn right after the game. para silang mga soprano. nag-practice yata para mag-caroling sa amin na alumni.

Ganyan ang mga lady spikers every after games... Naalala ko dati, kinalabit pa ng isa yung isang wala sa tono... LOL

Ferdinand is Indonesian. He has only one name, Ferdinand. Ganoon yata sa Indonesia.

You are correct. Indonesians usually don't have surnames. They just have first names. They may opt to have a second name but not a surname. Surnames were invented by christian countries in Europe and brought that system in Asia. In the case of the Philippines, the Spaniards required our forefathers to adopt christian names. That's were Filipino surnames like Cruz, dela Cruz, Reyes, etc. came into being.

Brazilians do have surnames but their athletes, particularly the football players, have this practice of using their first names only. Example is Pele whose real name is Edson Arantes Nascimento. Even their President, Luis Ignacio da Silva is just known as Lula. It's a Brazilian thing.

Wanna put some money on that?

That La Salle and La Sallians would want to dissociate themselves from such a loser coach is understandable.

However, it cannot be denied that Manong actually studied and played for the elite cono school after he transferred from UE. He's not only a proud La Salle alumnus, he's even in La Salle's Hall of Fame.

Don't take my word for it, you can check the DLSU Hall of Fame yourself:

Thank you for your candor. No matter how you try to mask the truth, it will come out.

Of course we are talking about the 2008 season because it's the only one the matters. Current champion, ehem, ehem.

If you insist that we be stuck in the past, I invite you to tally the total championships of both schools since the beginning of time, so as to put things in the proper perspective. Don't be selective.

I don't know anyone in the Ateneo community who alleged that Cortez sold the 2002 championship. That was purely a La Sallian invention.

Hence, I do not recall anyone in Ateneo needing to justify that the team did well "despite" Cortez.

Consolation prize: You won the most prestigious PCC.

P.S. Age is not an excuse for ignorance.

Ateneo is the best last year....no other meaning...or should i emphasize last year?

Ateneo has more championships from the beginning... technically better "historically" in number of trophies.

as for efficiency....inferior ang ADMU from the time I entered DLSU.

since you're not ignorant as you are implying.

don't be ignorant in recognizing the fact that DLSU has been winning more efficiently than ADMU in "our" lifetime.

Funny you mention that.

I don't know anyone in the Ateneo community who alleged that Cortez sold the 2002 championship. That was purely a La Sallian invention.

Hence, I do not recall anyone in Ateneo needing to justify that the team did well "despite" Cortez.

Para sa amin, we just did well and whipped your collective @ss. Same way we did last year. .

Tsk, tsk.

"Our" lifetime? Why the narrow and restricted classification? Because it favors you? That's not the way it goes, dearie. And I don't know what you mean by efficiency (or if you even know what it means in the first place).

Anyway, you either refer to the current champion (Ateneo), or, if you look at history, you look at it in its entirety. Otherwise, you will get an inaccurate and skewed view.

But I guess that's what you are really going for. Because the truth, the whole truth, pains you greatly.

But I do give you one thing -- at least your beloved team is the current champion of the most prestigious PCC. Be proud!

Keep on repeating that to yourself.....

Repeat after me:

La Salle is better than Ateneo.
Derek is better than Chot.
The PCC is more prestigious than the UAAP.
Franz Pumaren is an honorable, decent man.
Cardona is a decent, classy guy.
Yeo is a decent, classy guy.
Maierhofer is a decent, classy guy.
Salgado is the epitome of La Sallian courage.
Benitez is qualified for college.
Gatchalian is qualified for college.

Who knows, if you repeat them often enough, they might come true.....

Whats this I hear that La Salle will not be going to Serbia for the Unigames after all and that such is due to the fact that the Philippines was not really given an assured slot to this tournament. To my understanding, as it was announced in the press when the tournament started, whoever will win this tournament will represent the Philippines in the Unigames... so if such no assurance was actually given by the Unigames Organizers, why then would the PCC organizers say that the winner will go the such tournament in Serbia?

Can any representative form the PCC organizers shed light to this?

it is not the Unity Games .... it is the Universiade. The Universiade is often referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games.

it seems somebody or some people failed to do their work and was not able to submit the required entry forms to the organizers of the 2009 Belgrade Universiade Games. What puzzled me is that there is a big amount of time from the time DLSU became Champs of the PCC upto the entry form deadline last month.

It is the SBP's job to nominate the team to represent the country to the games. The thing I am seeing right now, it seems certain administrative duties by the SBP is not being done. It seems the organization is not yet that organized in dealing with other organizations both internationally and locally. This is still birth pains of a new organization .... but they really need to shape up fast or the good plans of the SBP might implode with this kind of admin or paperwork mishups.

--- I dont think it answered my question. Please note that these were mere opinions of NARDY and not actual answers from the PCC. If i get more opinions from other people, then such will be appreciated, if i get an answer from the organizers of the PCC, then better. By the way, i read my threads. (excerpts from an article in gameface)

.... Already into the various wild card and zonal phases, the PCCL will culminate with the "Sweet 16" tournament late in November of 2008. With the country's best college basketball teams all seeing action, the PCCL is looking to become the first true national collegiate basketball championship.

The top four teams of the UAAP and the NCAA, the champions of the NAASCU, CUSA, UCAA and other collegiate leagues, as well various teams invited to participate in the wild card phases all over the country will slug it out to determine who will be the one true national champion. Already, smaller schools such as St Clare College of Caloocan (NAASCU) and Emilio Aguinaldo College (UCAA) are making a lot of noise in the wild card competitions even against bigger schools like Santo Tomas.

"We want to encourage schools, especially those in the provinces, to develop and keep their homegrown talents so that the level of basketball in general will improve nationwide. That way it will not just be the Metro Manila schools that get all the best players," said Rey Gamboa, Chairman of the Collegiate Champions League. "We are hoping that the PCCL will grow and become an institution like the US NCAA," he added.

Apart from cash prizes in amounts of up to a million Pesos, the first PCCL Champion will represent the country in the Universiade in Serbia in 2009. "By offering these incentives we hope to encourage all of the participating schools to send their best and play their best," declared Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas President and PLDT chief Manuel V Pangilinan speaking during the launch of the PCCL at the Manila Pavilion hotel last week.

What happened, PCC and SBP? Alam nyo sana ateneo o San Beda na lang ang pinapanalo. Malamang nasa Universiade list of teams sila. At least merong magdadala ng national pride sa World University Games.

Will they stay or go to the Universiade?
by Tony L. Atayde

The Philippine Collegiate Champions League was supposed to have been a success. It brought together all the major collegiate teams in the country. It had a terrific final game, pitting arch rivals La Salle versus Ateneo. Everyone thought that it was the year that would be the beginning of the concept of crowning a true National Champion.

Ateneo was of course heavily favored, after it steamrolled over the competition, on the way to the finals. Even with the absence of starters Chris Tiu and Ryan Buenafe, the Blue Eagles looked formidable. A finals win would have given them a sweep of the major collegiate basketball championships.

La Salle on the other hand, had a harder time. In the semis, they had to have a late game steal and conversion to get to the finals.

In the end La Salle overwhelmed the Blue Eagles and with that, was supposed to come a slew of prizes. There was a P500,000.00 cash prize and most importantly, the right to represent the country in the 2009 Universiade Games in Belgrade.

Now it seems that a lot of what was promised before the tournament may not have come to pass. First, the La Salle team who won the championship only received P400,000.00, of which P30,000.00 was in gift certificates and P370,000.00 was in cash. The reason allegedly given for the P100,000.00 shortfall, was that it was used as prize money for the individual awards.

As I was going over the many press releases for the Philippine Collegiate Champion’s League, I saw that the amount of P500,000.00 was repeatedly heralded as the winning prize money. If the reason given was that the shortfall was used for the prizes for the individual awards, then why trumpet a prize of a half million pesos for the winner in the first place. That is a 20% shortfall or about P5,000 per member of the winning team.

The biggest prize of the PCC tournament was that the winning team will represent the Philippines in the 2009 Universiade Games in Serbia. La Salle, the PCC champion, was supposed to be that team. However, now it looks like it may not happen after all.

First, it has been rumored that the UAAP will have its opening on July 11, 2009. The Universiade basketball competition ends on July 12, 2009. Allegedly, the UAAP Board has no intentions of moving the opening date to accommodate the entry of La Salle in the Universiade. This may be because the UAAP works on a tight calendar of year-round events in different sports.

If the UAAP schedule is the issue, then it would appear that the Samahan Basketbol ng Pilipinas, of which the UAAP is a member, did not coordinate the matter with the UAAP Board before making it a part of the PCC champion team’s prize.

There are even unverified reports that it was suggested that La Salle did not have to send its top players to the Unversiade or evem that a selection of players from different schools be created for this purpose. Is that fair? If La Salle would not send their best players, then the school would be accused of abandoning the country’s interest. Sending a selection of players from different schools would take away from the integrity of a commitment made.

Furthermore, a look at the website of the Belgrade Universiade 2009, http://www.ub2009.org/dokumenta/prijave/Pa...%20Schedule.pdf, one can see that the submission of the “Intention to Participate Form” was Oct. 1, 2008, which was way before the PCCL. Secondly, the deadline for submission of the “General Entry Form” was Jan. 1, 2009. Lastly, the deadline for what is called “Final Engagement Form” or the final list of athletes who will participate, was on February 1, 2009.

The PCC is a sanctioned tournament of the SBP. Has the SBP submitted these forms? Have they gathered all the documentations of the players? Has the SBP paid the participation fee? Lastly, did the Philippines even qualify or get invited to send a team to the Universiade? These questions have to be answered in the interest of transparency.

A commitment was made by the SBP, which is the highest basketball governing body in the Philippines. Participation in the 2009 Belgrade Universiade was used as a come-on for teams to join the league. Does the winner of the PCC now have to beg to get the prize that they won fair and square? Would the same thing have happened if a school other than La Salle would have won the PCC tournament? In the event that the SBP cannot send La Salle to the Unversiade for whatever reason, they should not send a team at all, for this will have the obvious appearance of discrimination. If SBO cannot fulfill their promise, then they should instead give La Salle the money that it allocated for the tournament and allow La Salle to decide which tournament it may choose to join.

In the event La Salle goes to the Universiade but fails to qualify for the later rounds, it will be forced to leave the games early, for them to be back in time for the UAAP opening. If that happens, expect the naysayers to climb on their soap boxes and chastise the Green Archers for abandoning the tournament.

If La Salle does not get the prize that it was promised, they will not be the loser here. It will be the PCC and the SBP who will lose. The PCC would lose all the headway they made in last year’s tournament while the SBP will lose its credibility in its ability to support good leagues such as the PCC. They will definitely not get the same response they did last year if they do not deliver on their promises.

Personally, I hope that the SBP clears this matter up and makes the necessary arrangements to deliver on their promise. The PCC is too good a tournament to be tarnished with a controversy such as this.

MVP is bakla pala.

Ooops redundant.

your sarcasm reveals your ignorant stupidity. see? i'm being redundant, not because it is a mistake but simply because i want to highlight the fact that you indeed are.

what is the relation between his being bakla and the controversy? are you fallaciously insinuating that because he IS bakla, therefore, it is only fitting and normal for him to have that mistake?

what a retard. hey, study logic.

Thank you. di ko nga nilabas lahat nung UAAP. Kasi ayoko ma-scout masyado. Ayoko ng maraming fans. Humble ako eh.

Si Japeth sana maging LA Laker. Para triple tower sina ni Bynum at Gasol. Biro mo, Bynum, Gasol at Aguilar sa frontline.

Eto kaka-text lang sa akin. Kinokonsider daw sya as replacement for Tim Duncan. Mahilig daw kasi sa foreign-bred players ang Spurs.

MVP Cup: Green Archers Edge UP

The Green Archers edged UP, in a cliffhanger, 67-66 at the Arena this afternoon. The win somewhat made up for the 1 point loss the Archers suffered at the hands of the same UP team in the Fr. Martin Cup tournament held earlier this year.

The game marked the much-anticipated debut of Arvie Bringas, former center of the NCAA Jr. champion San Sebastian Staglets. Bringas did not disappoint, and displayed his inside prowess on both offense and defense. He topscored with 12 points despite being given limited playing time by Coach Franz.

The Archers dominated the first quarter, 19-14 before a spirited UP offense led by red shirting Silungan enabled them to take the half at 28-34. Some ragged play by the Archers on offense resulted in several miscues which were translated into fastbreaks by the Maroons. Defensively, the Archer press failed to blunt the frenetic UP offense.

After the halftime break, Archers buckled down to work, led by Simon Atkins who scored on successive possessions to cut the lead to a single basket at the end of the 3rd. UP kept it close throughout the 2nd half behind the hot hands of Silungan and ex-Zobel player Reyes. Every time the Archers would take the lead, either player would hit a triple to either tie the score or give UP the lead.

Although Webb, Malabes, Barua, and Mangahas were failed to match their usual point production, their aggressive drives resulted either in field goals or foul shots. Bringas also made his presence felt in the paint on offense, causing UP veteran Woody to foul out. Our guards would set up isolation plays for Bringas, and he succeeded in getting to the basket or managed to fish for fouls which he translated into points at the foul line.

An interesting subplot was the matchup between former UPIS players who are now with La Salle against their counterparts from La Salle schools who now suit up for UP. On the UP roster are Mikee Reyes, the LSGH pg last year, and Martin Reyes from DLSZ. Former UPIS players who are now with La Salle are Villanueva and Marata. Martin Reyes, (no, this is another Martin) who used to man the paint for LSGH, made it to the Archer lineup, although he didn’t play today.

UP paraded a couple of players who are not yet eligible to play this UAAP season: Silungan and Gingerich. Silungan is a tall wing player who studied in the US, and who can light it up from the 3 point area. He torched the Archer defense throughout the game, including a last second catch and shoot to end the first half. Interestingly, Silungan considered Ateneo and San Beda before ending up in UP.

The closeness of the game showed that the Archers still have a long way to go before they can be considered ready for the UAAP wars. The veterans such as Barua, Mangahas, and Ferdinand do not seem to be as sharp as expected, and the rookies, while full of potential, are still untested.

Simon Atkins, though, seems to be ready to go to war already. Perhaps the competition at the pg position is keeping him on his toes. Tolentino proved his worth in the closing minutes, sinking a corner trey and a jumper to keep the game close. Marata didn’t get much floor time, and Andrada showed that he still has a way to go.

If the UAAP season were to start tomorrow, we’d probably not be one of the favorites given the current state of the team. But there are a couple of months to go, and the coaches have a plan for the team.

With this bunch of veterans and sophomores/rookies, the team can only get better.

Game scores:

DLSU - Bringas 12, Atkins 10, Bagatsing 6, Mangahas 6, Malabes 5, Barua 5 Tolentino 5, Villanueva 4, Revilla 4, Webb 4, Co 4, Marata 2, Ferdinand 0, Andrada 0

UP - Silungan 26, Co 11, Reyes 9, Juruena 6, Lopez 2, Braganza 4, Padilla 3, Reyes 2, Lao 1, Gomez 2, Marfori 0, Gingerich 0

Quarter scores: 19-14, 28-34, 50-52, 67-66

Interestingly, Silungan considered Ateneo and San Beda before ending up in UP.

Peace. :)
