Summary
Last Friends tackles issues that afflict the current generation. Michiru's mother has brought a man back to their home and she is bullied at her workplace where she works as a beauty parlour assistant. She starts cohabiting with her boyfriend, a good young man who works at the Child Welfare Division and the only person who can give her emotional support, but ends up the victim of domestic violence and becomes fearful of love. The boyishly charming Ruka was a classmate of Michiru's in junior high school. She has performed brilliantly as a motocross racer and aims to win the national championship, but as the story progresses, a deep worry that she can neither confide in her parents or close friends grows evident. Takeru is a hair and makeup artist acquainted with Ruka. He is a good confidant to females due to his kindness and perceptiveness, and finds himself attracted to Ruka but has a phobia of sex as a result of a past trauma. The three of them become house mates and through their associations with others, gain the capacity to be positive about life.

1. Madivulge na yung reason kung bakit nambubugbog nang ganun si Sousuke.
2. Maresolve na yung pagiging DV victim nung nang-aapi kay Michiru sa parlor.
3. Magkaresolution na yung conflict between Takeru and his sister.
4. Mag-usap na nang matino si Ruka and Michiru.

As for the wedding, feeling ko si Eri yung ikakasal. La lang. Though sana si Takeru and Ruka nalang (pero parang impossible yun mangyari...) so next best choice is Takeru and Michiru...pero ang sakit nun. WAG LANG NILANG GAGAWING BITIN 'TO! (though I have a feeling na magiging bitin ang ending)

1. I think that Takeru was molested by his sister when he was a kid. Kaya rin siya takot sa physical contact. (Remember yung scene with Eri?)

2. As for Sousuke, feeling ko, he identifies with the kid (yung lagi niyang nakakalaro) baka naman iniwan din siya nang mom niya dati kaya naging ganun siya ka-clingy and obsessed kay Michiru. Sana mas i-explain though kung di nila ma-explain...feeling ko ito yung rason.

As for Eri and Ogurin-- baka nga sila yung ikakasal-- at nang magkasilbi naman sila. HAHAHA! Pero mas okay sana kung ibang character. Grabe!!! The suspense is killing me. Gusto ko na mapanuor *** last episode!!! :p

Interview with Asano Taeko (screenplay writer)
TokyoWrestling.com did a long interview with Last Friend's screenplay writer, Asano Taeko.

I find it to be the most informative and interesting interview so far concerning Last Friends. She talked about the conception of the drama and characters, the actors, about the issues the drama deals with and hints about the ending. A lot of the questions are what we're asking as well. I only summarized some and translated the more interesting ones. A little too long for a beginner like me to translate everything word by word so hopefully this is all right. I combined all the current 6 parts under the cut~

Part 1 - The currently passionate drama

Basically an introduction to the drama and the screenplay writer's history and background. There's also questions on how the conception for the drama started. It started off with just two characters, Michiru and Ruka. The producer decided that Michiru is to have a DV issue while Ruka is her best friend with GID. They manage to get Nagasawa Masami and Ueno Juri for both roles. After that only came Asami for the role of Eri. There were suggestions of making it into a story about these 3 women. But they were asked to add more male characters and I guess that's how Takeru and the current casts came about.

Part 2 - Seeing the actors, the image blossoms

---Why did you say that after seeing the actors, your image of the characters blossoms into what they are now?

When I saw them, what I felt was I wanted to draw out all the best aspects about them, it gave me a goal I guess. That's why, for me, instead of being directed at myself a real compliment would be if people say "those characters truly feel as if they exist", something like that. Also, I think the biggest compliment would be being able to bring out the true essence of the actors to its maximum.

---For example, how did the actors' image itself influences the character creation?

An example would be Sosuke acted by Nishikido-kun, at first in order to have Michiru escape and finds safety in the share house, we needed a DV guy. Initially, I thought to just have him as nothing more than a symbolic character. But when I saw Nishikido-kun's face...(laughs). Somehow, I felt some kind of sadness. That's how it became a kind of love story as well. In other words to portray something like, "Even when one loves another, DV still happens". That kind of story exists out of meeting Nishikido-kun.

---Anything when it comes to Ueno-san?

Yeah. About Juri-chan, when I first saw a movie called "Niji no Megami"(Rainbow Song,2006), I thought to myself, "She can play a role with Gender Identity Disorder". So, when she actually did this character, I thought it was perfect.

As for Takeru's actor, Eita-kun, when I met him, it was similar as the image I had for the drama, a little feminine kind of feeling(laughs). He seemed really gentle. That part of him is really nice and so I tried to incorporate it into the character. And for Masami-chan, she's always smiling and laughing, the type of girl that really tries to take care of others, so I tried to bring out that side of her.

Part 3 - In between FtM and Lesbian

Some other interesting parts of the interview talks about Gender Identity Disorder, Lesbian and in between, there's the 'Grey Zone'. Talking with the producers and all[even when they don't really understand fully about the exact difference], they decided on GID. One of the reason was because it was kinda a success when Ueto Aya played a character like that in 3-nen-B-gumi Kinpachi-sensei. Also because when people hear GID, it equals a deep problem(nayami which is the 'keyword' in the drama). She knows it might just seem like a 'straight' POV, but she thinks that GID allows Ruka to express more facets of her character and problems than being a lesbian would. Despite what is being labeled and promoted to the public, for her, Ruka still is a person that belongs in the grey zone and can't exactly be put into a category. Also like how Takeru is. She says it's probably a good thing that humans come in shades of grey.

---At first, when watching Ruka being so 'in love' when it comes to Michiru, everyone thinks she's a lesbian. You seriously didn't think of making her one?

At first when I show my script, they were like, "Isn't this a lesbian story?(laugh). Why can't we just go with her being a lesbian?" was the immediate reaction(laugh). But somehow, being a drama, we still need to 'appeal' to the public in general so the proper word of choice is needed. That's why we remained with GID. (Lol. This whole answer can be summarised with "So what if we're masking the gayness with GID?" They did do research, read/watch videos and stuff on it though.)

---Even from the start, Ruka doesn't refer to herself as 'ore' or 'boku'(more masculine way of refering to oneself), so we thought she's just a boyish lesbian. Why does she use 'atashi' and 'watashi' instead?

That's right. If she uses 'ore' it'll be problematic wouldn't it? The average television viewer would probably wonder if Ruka is uncomfortable being herself and we wanted to avoid that I guess. There's no real debate about it. Right now, Ruka is very popular. Viewers that don't have the same issue as her can also understand her feelings and feel her emotions. That, I believe has nothing to do with her simply calling herself 'watashi'. (Yes, it has everything to do with Ueno Juri though)

Part 4 - Ueno Juri being the role itself

---During your first meeting(introduction), what kind of talk did you have with the actors/actresses?

Firstly, for Juri-chan, she said "This role, what kind of role is it? Please tell me more!". Before the shooting start, she even came to my house to listen to what I have to say(laugh). She came together with her manager-san. At that time, within her, she already have images of how the character would be like. "This type of hairstyle, with these clothing, and this kind of air around her" and things like that was what she suggested to me. Juri-chan had already started creating the character and was very spirited about everything. "There are parts I don't really understand, but I'll challenge it!" was what she reiterated from the start.

---As expected! Ueno-san's acting is wonderful isn't it. Did she receive any talks about FtM herself?

I'm not sure about the exact situation but probably not. For Juri-chan's case, I believe she acted based on her instinct. Which is amazing. Regarding her, what really surprised me was when she came here at first, she still had her 'Nodame~' hair style and was saying things like "I don't really understand", but around one week after that, during the time for our rehearsal, she came with her hair already cut short and wearing Ruka's clothing/style. And then, everything was different. The way she walks, sits, talks and all had changed. Even when the camera wasn't rolling, she still sat with her legs open and things like that, in other words, it felt as if she had become the character itself. The significance of that, I really feel that she is a natural genius.

---Her attitude towards acting is certainly praiseworthy. When you first saw her with her hair cut like that, what was your impression like?

She manage to bring out an air around her that is totally different from before. It suits her extremely well and I thought it was pretty. Comparing her now with the her during 'Nodame~', if you ask me which one is prettier, I can't really give an opinion but I think the current her is beautiful.

Part 5 - unable to connect but still the feeling continues

---What do you think of Michiru and Ruka's relationship?

Michiru and Ruka's relationship too(because they were talking about Takeru and Ruka before that) is still developing, Ruka hasn't exactly confessed yet and Michiru still doesn't know about Ruka's feelings, they're both really out of sync with each other at the moment. But this story, towards the end, we see a Michiru that understands everything, and I think the story that follows would be what's next for them. That's why even though it won't be a totally happy kind of ending, "Oh, so there's this type of ending as well", is what I want people to feel when they watch it.

Part 6 - The names of the 3 characters are connected

---Ruka has a high popularity, she's managed to acquire a lot of fan no matter if they're straight or otherwise. From Asano-san's POV, what are Ruka's charm/why are people fascinated with Ruka?

Yeah, within Ruka, both strength and weakness coexist together, probably that part of her. A gap exists, I feel that this character provides a jarring sense of this gap(not too sure about this sentence). Actually, there are opinions that among the characters in the drama, she could probably be the weakest of them all. She has a part of her that gets hurt easily but guards herself with a hard exterior? With that she plans to live on strongly, in a sense she really stretches herself to the limit. That kind of desperation and determination, I think is really great.

Plus, when Ruka compares Sosuke's way of loving to her own meaning of love, "Shouting out 'I love you''I love you' relentlessly is not what love really is" was uttered right? And then she said something like "Knowing how to pull back for that person's sake is what love is". In the show and the development after this, certainly Ruka is portraying this kind of love, I feel that this kind of heroic aspect is one of Ruka's charm.

---There's a rumour going on especially among overseas fangirls that Ruka and Michiru's name came from Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon's characters Haruka and Michiru. So, what's the deal?

That's not true. In actuality, they were simply decided one way or another. The name Ruka has a great form to it I think. And it's also suitable to be used for either a guy or a girl. Other than that, Ruka, Michiru and Takeru, these 3 names have a 'ru' in them which I think gives them a bond/connection with each other. Like their names being connected together by a syllable, I wish to portray the same feeling on screen as well. In trying to bring out the image of being tied together, we thought it would be nice to include a same sound in them. The name Michiru was inspired from what the producer, Nakano-san said before.(skipped). That probably somehow influenced the name. There's also the inspiration when seeing the actors too, somehow it just feels like Michiru, or just feels like Ruka.

Among the first mysteries presented by this drama was "Michiru's baby's father" and "Who's going to die" right? Well, I can give a little hint. Compared to what everyone imagine will happen, it should be quite a happy ending I guess...?

I managed to watch Last Friends for the first time!


It's like I could guess how the story developed till today, which was good. That was fun to watch!

"Last Friends"! Do you watch that TV drama?

My song, Prisoner Of Love is featured as the theme song.

I heard it's getting higher and higher viewer rating every time it's aired.

Would be interesting I guess.

. . . I thought I must watch this as its preview things looked interesting at first, but I don't have this habit to watch dramas on a routine basis at all and so far not being able to watch it even once

Also I almost have no sense of time and day, so I have no idea what day is Thursday or what time it is now

Most of the time I realize like "Oh! So today was Thursday, by any chance?!" at around Thursday midnight.

I said Ueno Juri chan "I'll watch it!"


Well actually, before the drama started, when I sang Prisoner Of Love in HEY!HEY!HEY! special show (not M-Ste).

Ueno Juri chan who was doing some shootings in the studio nearby, came to see me singing, then came to my dressing room to say hello to me!

And then, you know what, she told me she was a fan of me!

OMG, it's more than I deserve! I mean it! I really appreciate that!

She said she's always listening to my new album in the car!

And her fave one is "Take 5"!

(which made me think she'd be a real fan of me, judging from that her choice)

okay I'm catching up.. decided to watch from ep.1 onwards and not cheat and skip around:lol: currently on episode 5. It's pretty good.. but it looks like it's turning to a gay drama. I hope it doesn't turn that way.

About the song.. actually.. the reason I was so interested in this drama.. besides the beautiful Nagasawa Masami, and the curiosity to Juri's new look.. was because of the awesome song by Utada Hikaru. A drama with one of Hikki's song can always be saved by its OST.. and so far it's doing it's job in this drama.

I think First Love (Majo no Jouken) will still be my favorite Utada song... I get tired of it though, but it's still good. Next would be Prisoner of Love, Hikari (Kingdom Hearts) or Be My Last (Spring Snow).. and then her new songs Stay Gold, Fight the Blues.. etc. It was interesting to know that Utada watches this drama.*okay* I've always seen her as a down to earth person. I wonder what her inspiration was to writing Prisoner of Love..

actually, hindi naman .. hehe .. the story is good .. I'll wait for ur comment if you're finished watching episode 6 onwards .. let's see if after watching it you may also realize that this is not your typical japanese drama. kinda boring at the 1st episode .. but it gets more interesting every episode .. haha ..

about Hikki .. I so love those songs too :love: I love the PV of Be My Last, Hikari is one of my favorites .. and for the new album .. I love the songs Celebrate, Niji iro basu, Fight the blues, Stay Gold, Heart Station and of course Prisoner of Love + Flavor of Life (Original and Ballad version). I also see Hikki as a down to earth person. Whenever I watch her interviews, she just act normal as if she isn't a superstar in Japan. Mostly, her blogposts .. it's all about her life being just a normal person (and her addiction to Kuma-Chang -- her teddy bear bought from China). However, you can still see that her divorce affects her life up until now. There are rumors on some forums that Prisoner of Love & Heart station is inspired by her divorce (well I guess it really is, you can notice it on the translations of the song). And Flavor of Life too, which she composed when she was bed ridden due to her illness(ovarian tumor). It was months before their divorce. I guess their relationship that time isn't clear anymore.

btw, some of Hikki's songs were played on the birthday special episode of Kim Chiu: Automatic, Celebrate, Fight the Blues, Heart Station and for the credits (wherein Kim is dancing) the song played was Traveling *okay* And also, according to a Filipino member of www.utadanet.com he said that Hikki's song, Dareka no negai ga kanau koro(instrumental) was played in Sharon .. while Final Distance(instrumental) was played in PDA .. First love(piano) was played in Game Knb? and Prisoner of Love (the part: I'm a prisoner of love, a prisoner of love, just a prisoner of love) was played on PBB Teen Edition Plus.

I just hope Filipino audiences could recognize Hikki's talent .. not only her songs but Hikki also as a person.

Yahooo! way to go PILIPINO_AKO! *okay* I can't put my finger on it but this show really got me hooked. The story's pretty twisted and sad (I normally prefer feel-good dramas) but I find myself being drawn to each and every episode. I guess there's a part of me that's hoping for a happy ending amidst all the chaos.

One thing's for sure though-- I'm all praises in terms of the entire cast and the drama's soundtrack. I just hope that the ending delivers. I have a feeling that it'll be open-ended.... :depressed:

Osaka Sports reported that the decision to make a movie-version of popular J-Dorama "Last Friends" has been made! The dorama's themes are concerned with modern-day social problems like child abuse, domestic violence and homosexuality, and started out with a viewer's rating of 13.9% (for the first episode) and peaked at 20.7% in the second-last episode last week, pulling ahead of KimuTaku's CHANGE. (The last episode airs tonight.)

Related personnel commented that "nobody had thought that Last Friends would be able to rake in higher viewer's ratings than KimuTaku's CHANGE. Although the 19th (of June) was meant to be the last episode, we suddenly had a phone call asking us to add on a special episode/version of Last Friends, in the way that KimuTaku's HERO was made into a movie."

Apparently plans for the movie are already underway. Following in the steps of "Journey to the West" and "HERO", it's been said that the transition from the small-screen to the big-screen has rarely seen failure.

I'm currently browsing thru the thread of Last Friends in d-addicts and I couldn't agree more with what the poster said.

Look at it in an optimistic way. Despite being probably a little too ambitious in trying to deal with so many sensitive/taboo issues in one drama, the fact that they tried to do what something that has not been done before is worth a pat in the back. Some issues have been successfully developed while some might not get enough screentime. No matter if the end is satisfactory or not, I believe that most of the message and good intention still manage to get through to the viewers. People that are normally ignorant are now more aware of stuff happening around them and most importantly, it has opened hearts and probably doors for other dramas to follow suit. So, I'd say the drama has successfully brought to us more than just entertainment and whatever flaws the execution has, the great acting, character interactions and script(well, the more brilliant moments) more than made up for it. On a whole, I thought it was awesome.

It doesn't matter what your gender or orientation is, or who you fall in love with or not able to love, life still has to continue and humans living together in such a world, have to learn to understand and care for each other. With love in heart, live on strongly together despite what the world throws in your way. I think this message have come across very clearly throughout the course of this drama for me and that in itself, deserve a compliment. It might sound sappy but I don't think anyone would disagree right? I can only imagine the impact it has on people actually having those issues. It provides hope.

It was an awesome 4 months and I've gained a lot through and from this drama. So, thank you, Last Friends.

Me too! It's not your typical jdrama and I commend it for tackling taboo issues. :) I like it primarily because of their acting. Excellent! The ending was -- well... good enough. They're going to show some unshown scenes and extend the story in the SP.

It has been a very fulfilling journey indeed.

This time around, to be able to work together with actors of the same age(generation), it was more enjoyable than usual. I think Juri-chan manage to learn a lot from the experience.
Together with the staff, we went through a lot to be able to create this piece of work, and received a lot of different reactions/feedbacks. We're really glad.

I'm currently browsing thru the thread of Last Friends in d-addicts and I couldn't agree more with what the poster said.

Look at it in an optimistic way. Despite being probably a little too ambitious in trying to deal with so many sensitive/taboo issues in one drama, the fact that they tried to do what something that has not been done before is worth a pat in the back. Some issues have been successfully developed while some might not get enough screentime. No matter if the end is satisfactory or not, I believe that most of the message and good intention still manage to get through to the viewers. People that are normally ignorant are now more aware of stuff happening around them and most importantly, it has opened hearts and probably doors for other dramas to follow suit. So, I'd say the drama has successfully brought to us more than just entertainment and whatever flaws the execution has, the great acting, character interactions and script(well, the more brilliant moments) more than made up for it. On a whole, I thought it was awesome.

It doesn't matter what your gender or orientation is, or who you fall in love with or not able to love, life still has to continue and humans living together in such a world, have to learn to understand and care for each other. With love in heart, live on strongly together despite what the world throws in your way. I think this message have come across very clearly throughout the course of this drama for me and that in itself, deserve a compliment. It might sound sappy but I don't think anyone would disagree right? I can only imagine the impact it has on people actually having those issues. It provides hope.

It was an awesome 4 months and I've gained a lot through and from this drama. So, thank you, Last Friends.
