Business top dog is newest, biggest Bulldog

MANILA, Philippines—A big name is out to lend a big hand to an oft-overlooked school.

One of the country’s richest families was at ringside for a taste of UAAP hoop action, bringing along with it plans to beef up a school’s education and sports programs.

Wearing a yellow collared shirt, Hans Sy inconspicuously watched from the gallery as the National University battled the University of the Philippines in the 71st UAAP men’s basketball competition Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

Sy, the president of SM Prime Holdings Inc., graced the game to get a feel of the UAAP and see how his family can help improve NU’s stock.

“Sports and education go hand in hand,” said Sy just a month after his father and mall magnate Henry Sy Sr.—the Philippines’ second richest individual with an estimated wealth of $3.9 billion—bought majority of the shares of NU.

“We’re still very new. We’re observing first, then we’ll make our move.”

The Sys, who also own a minority share at Far Eastern University, aim to improve NU’s quality of education, develop its sports program and rebuild school infrastructure.

“Our priority is really education for the people,” said Sy.

Although the NU Bulldogs dropped their first game against the UP Maroons, 86-72, Sy hardly looked disheartened and reiterated his family’s steadfast commitment.

“We’re supporting all the sports in the UAAP,” said Sy. “It just so happens that basketball started, so we’re here.”

“NU has a very rich history,” added Sy. “It’s not small. It just didn’t grow. And we intend to put it back as one of the top universities.”

Very predictable plays yesterday that's why they lost. NU is lacking of firepower so they must sacrifice bodies in defense. I know they can beat UP yesterday but NU self destructed from the start of second half.

Big game against UE on Thursday. Good luck NU. :)

magiging malaki pong tulong ang SM sa pagbuhay ng NU muli.before NU is one of the most respected university pero unti-unti pong nawala.pero right now with the help of SM ay unti-unti pong babangong ang NU.sobrang maraming magagandang plans ang gagawin ngayon sa alma mater namin.like the new NU sport complex 12th story building with olmypic size swimming pool.increase of instructor salary para maraming mapiratang magagaling na profesor pati narin mga students.beautification sa campus.sure employment sa mga alumni at graduate ng NU.at magkakaroon pa po ng program ang SM sa mga student para kumita ng pera while studying kasi pwede silang mag part time sa mga SM mall.lalo na sa mga kapos palad na magaaral ng aming university.

although natalo ang men's team, nu should be happy that the lady bulldogs (i hope someone will give them an appopriate monicker for their women's teams) beat la salle in women's basketball...

i heard that their women's volleyball team will try to be competitive...that's piece of good news for volleyball fans...

its just about time that NU finally gets out of the cellar dweller/UAAP Doormat slump that its been in for the past .. century? .. now with a renewed athletics program backed by unlimited funding.. expect NU to bite and claw its way back into the final4 and turn into one of the elite teams of the UAAP(similar to how Lucio Tan was able to turn UE into a consistent final4 and finals contender) .

btw. if Pido Jarencio doesnt find suitable replacements for Jervy Cruz, Japs Cuan and company .. expect UST to be taking NU's place in the cellar starting next season.

Tapos yung medyas, tatlong game suot bago pa-labhan

i still remember that old Probe Team episode a few years ago comparing the NU Bulldogs with the DLSU Green Archers. kung napanood nyo it was both heartwarming at nakakalungkot at the sametime. pinakita yung Bulldogs practicing sa kanilang dilapidated gym(some call it antique, pwede din "old school" para di masyado kaawa-awa) then after practice they'll have a "Team Merienda" dun sa sari-sari store across the gate where they will indulge in spanish bread(lam nyo yun?), pandesal and softdrinks -- masaya na sila dun, ika nga masaya basta't samasama. on the other hand, yung Green Archers were practicing dun sa state of the art (bagong tayo) multi storey sports center, and going to Team dinners sponsored by rich alumni. Sa gabi naman yung Bulldogs would then come home to their again dilapidated Athletes Dorm, while yung Green Archers would come home to their Condominiums in Taft Ave. -- well sabi nga ni BJ Manalo dun.. "hirap din kasi 3 kami nagshashare dito sa condo.." :uh:

well at least its a comfort to know that hopefully those days are coming to an end. with the Sy's acquisition of NU and steady stream of funding(sinimulan na daw construction of a BRAND NEW Sports Complex -- Thank God) NU would finally have the RESPECT that they've always deserved. On a personal note, Ive always had a soft spot(like most pinoys do) for the underdogs.. ive been watching the UAAP since I was in gradeschool and Im not kidding eversince then and i dunno maybe till now, the NU team is still driving around in that antique bus of theirs (yung parang minibus na walang aircon tapos yung bintana gawa pa ata sa kahoy kailangan mo pa "isabit" pagumuulan) .. and sobrang nalulungkot ako for them(add the fact that napakaliit ng student support nila during games, i remember during the 90's marami na ata 20-30 NU students watching their games sa BEG). thats why i feel really happy for them whenever they win a game, kahit Ateneo pa talunin nila ok lang sa akin. let's face it .. everybody loves the underdogs.

Henry Sy buys 60% of National University

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | ShareThisMANILA, Philippines - Mall magnate Henry Sy, Sr. has joined the bandwagon of taipans who have acquired private universities, recently gaining control of the 108-year-old National University (NU) in Sampaloc, Manila.

SM Investments Corp. President Harley T. Sy told reporters last week that the Sy family bought a 60% stake in the country’s first private non-sectarian school last June from the family of the late founder, Mariano F. Jhocson.

The younger Sy however did not disclose how much the transaction was worth, saying only it was purely the Sy family’s decision and did not involve any of the company’s diverse units.

But he said the Sy family has a lot of plans for the school, and wants to make it one of the country’s top universities.

Mr. Sy said the plans include a new eight-story building inside the university campus and the renovation of some old buildings.

The new building is expected to rise in a 13,000-square-meter lot, housing new classrooms; laboratories, and a multi-purpose gymnasium on top and a swimming pool on the basement which both could hold up to 1,200 people.

Aside from the new building, which is due for construction later this month, the Sy family plans to add 16 more laboratories and expand the existing ones, increase the number of classrooms to 80, attract new faculty members, and make NU more active in sports, a source said.

"We are hoping [to] make it survive for the next twenty years. NU was based on the foundation [of] providing lower-cost [but] quality education [to students] compared to [the] other schools," he said.

The Sys plan to focus on courses like Nursing, Hotel and Restaurant Management, and Pharmacy because of the "increasing demand in these courses."

The Sy family reportedly wants to "overhaul" the small university and has been pirating professors from the country’s top four universities — Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines-Diliman, and the University of Santo Tomas.

As of the moment, the source said the family has no plans to increase the school’s tuition next year despite the construction of the building and new facilities to be finished by May next year.

He nevertheless said that with the new facilities, the family expects NU’s enrollees, which has gone down significantly over the years, to double next year.

"We hope to make the school competitive again," the source said.

NU opened in Aug. 1, 1900 as Colegio Filipino and was later renamed Colegio Mercantil with the introduction of business and accounting courses. It became the National Academy in 1916 and was renamed National University in 1921. The university offers courses like architecture, commerce, dentistry, education, engineering, computer science, entrepreneurship, liberal arts, nursing, and pharmacy.

NU also has a graduate school and offers elementary and high school education.

Mr. Sy said the acquisition of NU is part of the family’s "socio-civic role" in society, noting that the family wants to sponsor yearly at least a hundred scholars who can study in the school of their choice.

The mall taipan through SM Foundation has sent hundreds of students to college. To date, 630 scholars have graduated from the SM College Scholarship Program, which maintains 400 scholars at any given time.

i still remember that old Probe Team episode a few years ago comparing the NU Bulldogs with the DLSU Green Archers. kung napanood nyo it was both heartwarming at nakakalungkot at the sametime. pinakita yung Bulldogs practicing sa kanilang dilapidated gym(some call it antique, pwede din "old school" para di masyado kaawa-awa) then after practice they'll have a "Team Merienda" dun sa sari-sari store across the gate where they will indulge in spanish bread(lam nyo yun?), pandesal and softdrinks -- masaya na sila dun, ika nga masaya basta't samasama. on the other hand, yung Green Archers were practicing dun sa state of the art (bagong tayo) multi storey sports center, and going to Team dinners sponsored by rich alumni.

When he was a rookie(Baguion), I always watch their games in Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila,,dun ko nakita ang intensity ng Bulldogs esp ang coaching staff lalo na pag inaasar sila about being "patay-gutom" ( I think its against Ateneo)..HInamon ni Manny Dandan yung guy ng suntukan sa labas..inawat lang siya ng players.."laro lang daw"...

Without top dog Edwin Asoro, the National University Bulldogs are hard-pressed to be more competitive than last year’s 2-win team.

Coach Manny Dandan is already looking ahead past this season as he bared a four-year program that he and Chairman Hans Sy of SM Group, who bought majority stakes in the school, have hatched out.

With the Sy family’s entry to NU, hopes are high that it will only be a matter of time when the Sampaloc-based institution would enter the upper echelon of the UAAP.

The team bound for the future will have to rely this season on remaining veterans Michael Luy, Melvin Baloran and Jewel Ponferrada to caution the impact of Asoro, Jonathan Janke and Raymund Aguilar’s departure from the team.

Six new recruits are joining the team this season - Ronald Roy, Francis Donahue, Ajeet Singh, Larry John Malanday, Joseph Hermosisima, Dean Mark Cabaluna - not exactly prized recruits but came as far as Davao and Iloilo in the south. If there’s any consolation, it is an indication that NU’s recruitment network have gone beyond the metropolis, something which they did not enjoy in the past.

“For the longest time, we did not have the logistics and sports facilities but with the Sy family’s entry, we can now compete with the rest of the field in recruitment,” Dandan explained.

A new state of the art eight-storey building which houses a basketball court, gym and an air-conditioned athletes’ dormitory has already been completed in just eight months.

NU no longer contents itself with the other schools’ crumbs in recruitment. Most of the prized Bulldogs’ recruits are now in their residency in Team B, something to watch out for beyond this season.

Small but sure steps. This is what Dandan wants to get started this season for the new breed of NU Bulldogs. With reports from Bea Alde and John Audy Ibarreta, NU Correspondents

ang ganda ng new building ng NU, may escalator pa (it's the only school in the country that to date has escalators) at NBA sized basketball court, a volleyball court, two badminton courts, 140 meters jogging oval on its Upper Side, located sa 8th floor..., Nice NU! lahat ng UAAP school competitive.... :)

never been to NU but I've seen it before (outskirts nga lang haha)

my uncle's from NU. and he's currently earning big bucks in malaysia. he took some engineering course back in the day and he now works in an oil firm and he earns about P150,000.00 per month.

Gotta admit, I used to think NU was a low-school 'til I knew my uncle was from this school.

I'm from UST btw :) just to let you guys know this post isn't coming from an NU student.

National University Topping Off Ceremony for New 8 Storey Academic Building

NU new 8 Storey Academic Building
The National University and the SM Group of Companies recently held the topping off ceremony of its new 8 storey academic building. The building, which started its construction last October 2008 is targeted for completion, on June 2009, just in time for the first semester of SY 2009 - 2010.

SM Prime holdings President Hans T. Sy, NU CEO and President, Mr. Teodoro Ocampo, and NU COO, Mr. Renato Carlos Ermita, Jr. led the topping off rites with New Golden city Builders General Contractor Engr. Manny Sy, Architect Ana Siao Ling of Jose Siao Ling & Associates, DA Abcede Construction Manager Engr. Dennis Abcede, NU Board Director Mr. Roberto Paguia, and NU Campus Management Director Mr. Nilo Ocampo.

The SM Group recently acquired majority ownership of NU, and it's all out support will help strengthen NU as an institution with new infrastructure, equipment, and focus on academic excellence.

The new building which has a neo-classical design and a total area of 13,700 square meters will house the College of Hotel and Restaurant Management, Information Technology, and Nursing, in addition to the courses offered by the University. It features 48 fully air-conditioned classrooms (16 in each floor), kitchen, laboratories, modern nursing skills lab/mini hospital, computer rooms, and other related laboratories plus student facilities like a cafeteria, a multi- purpose student area, and wi-fi zones.

The Ground Floor will lead to the two units of escalator (it's the only school in the country that to date has escalators) and four units escalators. The Second Floor will be the Grand Reception Area where the monument of the Founder, Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson will be displayed.

Classrooms will be at the Third Floor, the school's Administrative Offices and Computer Laboratories will be housed at the Fourth Floor; and more classrooms will be located at the Fifth and Sixth Floor. The Seventh Floor will contain a Chemical and Physics Lab and an HRM Bar and Restaurant area where students can practice in an actual hotel room - single bed, twin sharing and suites. There will also be two audio-visual rooms and a mini hospital for students in this area. The 8th Floor is where the NBA sized basketball court, a volleyball court, two badminton courts, as well as 140 meters jogging oval on its Upper Side is located.

The new building's construction team includes Jose Siao Ling and Associates, architects: New Golden City Builders, general contractors; and DA Abcede and Associates, project managers.

wala naman palang katotohanan na itong bagong building ng NU ang only school in the country na may escalator.

Mahigit ng dalawang taong may escalator ang Greenhills Christian Fellowship International Christian School (GCF-ICS).

Manila – The National University (NU) Bulldogs came out from the cellar after fashioning out a 76-70 victory over the Adamson Falcons during Saturday’s 72nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) at the Araneta Coliseum.

The win gave the Bulldogs a 2-5 record at the end of the first round while the Falcons were left in the basement with a 1-6 slate.

NU was on the brink of a huge collapse when its outside shooting began to click.

Rookie Joseph Hermosisima had two triples while Denmark Cabaluna chipped in one in a torrid 12-0 finishing kick by the Bulldogs.

Adamson came up with its own 11-2 run, erasing as much as 12-point deficit to lead by six, 70-64, 4:52 left in the game.

However, the Bulldogs were not to be denied this time.

“We just continue to be positive. Even after the big losses, we concentrated on the positives. We’ll have adjustments in our game come the second round,” NU coach Manny Dandan said.

Melvin Baloran scored all of his 13 points in the first quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds to pace NU, which tied its win total last season.

Adamson, which trailed for most part of the game, was led by Leo Canuday’s 16 points.

The Scores:

NU 76 – Baloran 13, Roy 12, Ponferrada 12, Hermosisima 9, Terso 7, Singh 6, Cabaluna 6, Manito 4, Fabula 4, Luy 3, Tungcul 0, Malanday 0, Magat 0, Batac 0.

AdU 70 – Canuday 16, Margallo 13, Canada 13, Colina 6, Santos 5, Nuyles 5, Cabrera 4, Alvarez 4, Basillio 3, Camson 2, Lozada 0, Galinato 0.

Quarters: 24-19, 46-42, 62-59, 76-70.

RP's richest family invests in college hoops

The nation's richest family has decided to eschew the country's premier professional league for the time being and focus on making a perennial cellar-dweller in the college ranks a championship contender.

The Sy family, which controls the SM chain of supermalls and is listed by Forbes Magazine as the Philippines’ richest family, now owns National University with the patriarch Henry Sy serving as the university president.

With that sports priority, the corporate giant is not inclined to participate in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) next season. SM was on the PBA short list of companies being considered by the league in its expansion program. The league is looking at the possibility of adding two teams next season.

A close associate of Henry's son Hans Sy told GMANews.TV that SM is not setting its sights on entering the pro league as it is more focused on strengthening NU in the University Athletic Association of the Philippipnes. The university is currently in last place in the current UAAP tournament.

Hans Sy oversees the sports development program of the Bulldogs, which last won the UAAP men’s basketball crown in 1954.

“They may be focused on sports development right now, but entering the PBA is not their priority. Not yet at this stage," said the associate who requested anonymity. “They want to make NU a contender in the UAAP not just in basketball, but in other sports as well."

NU’s new owners have built a new training facility at the E-Com Center at the SM Mall of Asia for the men’s basketball team.

NU is also set to have a new football field also located at the MOA where they plan to form a new team in time for the UAAP competition in the second round.

PBA's expansion plans

Aside from SM, Hapee Toothpaste of Lamoiyan Corporation also abandoned its plan to enter the PBA next season.

The league is also looking to send invitations to Phoenix Petroleum, the Gokongwei Group of Companies and foreign companies like Sanyo and Samsung.

The Gokongwei Group was one of the PBA’s founding members. It carried teams such as Presto, N-Rich and Great Taste, which ruled the league during the 1980s. Its franchise was sold to Sta. Lucia Realty by the end of the 1992 season.

Phoenix Petroluem has been a staunch supporter of the PBA, sponsoring its provincial games.

Sanyo and Samsung are two Asian brands which might be supported by their mother companies abroad and bring in additional revenue to the pro league through sales and advertisements.

Aside from two more teams next season, the league is expected to create a farm league, stage a women’s tournament and the transform the league into a corporation

Keeping the Bulldogs Barking

A few minutes before their second round match against the University of Sto. Tomas (UST) last Sunday at the Flying V Arena in San Juan, National University (NU) assistant coach and former Bulldog Chico Manabat approached Joseph Hermosisima on the bench and encouraged him to just shoot the ball.

Just six minutes into the game, Kokoy, as he is fondly called, already scored eight points, including the first six markers of NU via back-to-back three-pointers. The spurt did not come as a surprise at all for Manabat and the players cheering on the bench. Because all of them know that if there is one thing Hermosisima can do, it is shooting the basketball.

Name worth mentioning
When this year’s rookies get talked about, only two players are instantly thrown into the conversation: Jeric Teng of UST and Ryan Roose Garcia of Far Eastern University. Understandably, they receive most of the spotlight thanks to their notable showing and more importantly, their team’s winning records. But if you take away the Ws and just look at sheer talent and the guts to mix it up with the veterans, Hermosisima deserves to be in the discussion.

“Kokoy is a promising rookie. He is a very courageous player. We all know that by now,” Manabat proudly said.

In just his first year in the league, the 5’10” Hermosisima already leads NU in scoring with 12.9 PPG on 25 minutes of action per outing. His exceptional shooting touch and natural ability to penetrate are welcome weapons on the Bulldogs’ already weak offensive arsenal, which only has one other player in Mervin Baloran (11.8 PPG) who averages double digits in scoring.

“Lagi ko lang ginagawa ‘yung role ko sa team kaya maganda ang ipinapakita ko,” Hermosisima said modestly. Ina-apply ko rin sa laro ‘yung mga tinuturo ni coach (Manny Dandan) sa practice.”

Export from Davao
Unlike his more prominent batch mates, Hermosisima came to the UAAP via the back door. After studying in Holy Cross in Davao, he flew to Manila last year to try out for NU upon his uncle’s advice, who knew someone from the school. Things did not work too well for him though as he was placed in Team B and toiled there for one whole year.

“Mahirap ‘yung pinagdaanan ko.” Hermosisima told ***************. “Pero ginawa ko ang lahat para mapansin ako at maipakita na kaya ko talagang maglaro.”

Get noticed he did. After several months of practicing and honing his game, Dandan and new athletic director and longtime coach Junel Baculi were impressed with Hermosisima and included him on the Bulldogs roster this season. It was a decision they never regretted.

“Kokoy’s a player who can turn around the program. He’s a gem we can be really proud of.” Baculi beamed. “This kid will really go places.”

No smooth sailing
While it has become obvious that Hermosisima can play, not everything was smooth sailing for the shy 23-year-old. Growing up in the province, he was used to a more toned-down and withdrawn environment. That is why when he first arrived in Manila, he was bitten by the unavoidable case of culture shock.

“Nahirapan din ako mag-adjust galing sa probinsya. Sa Davao kasi parang laru-laro lang. Walang exposure. Dito sa Manila, talagang pinapanood ka ng mga tao,” said the sophomore Computer Science student.

Looking back at their first game of the season last July 12 versus University of the Philippines, Hermosisima recalled how nervous he was to step on the court. Pressure got the best of him as he found it difficult to take everything in. The unassuming province boy was overwhelmed by the entire UAAP circus.

“Sobrang kinabahan ako nung first game ko. Sobrang daming tao tapos pinapanood pa kami sa TV. May drums pa!” Hermosisima said in jest. “Hindi ko ‘yun na-experience sa Davao.”

Main man leash
But that opening game is now just a fragment of his remarkable UAAP debut. Now, the silent streak-shooting southpaw is one of the most feared gunners in the league and will only get better as the learning curve gets higher.

Although NU is languishing in the cellar yet again with only two wins to show so far, the future is bright for the Sampaloc-based squad with Hermosisima around. He is the light at the end of the tunnel, the silver lining in the dark cloud, and the half-filled glass. Yes, he is all those clichés as he will surely wear the main man leash in the Bulldogs’ revamped campaign next season.

“Babawi talaga kami next year. Gagawin talaga namin ang lahat ng makakaya namin para manalo,” said Hermosisima, who idolizes Kobe Bryant and considers UST’s Dylan Ababou as the best player in the UAAP.

With the way he has performed this season, Hermosisima has shown that the term “rookie jitters” is just an excuse made up by players who fail to live up to expectations. He may not have the luster of his rival rookies or the swagger of his veteran counterparts, but he has proven to the entire UAAP—the exact league that looked larger than life to him before— that his bite is louder than his bark.

If Kokoy Hermosisima is 23 years old this Season 72 therefore Season 73 will be his last playing year for the UAAP? As far as I know 24 is the age limit in UAAP MBT
