What will they unveil on 2011?

when will they do that?

Is there a laid out program for it?

How will they do those things?

As an alumnus/ student/employee of UST, what do you expect from the admin when we turn 400?

so far, pasimula na ang bagong UST Sports Complex (forgot if thats the exact name) pero itatayo siya sa Eng'g Complex behind the AMV-CoA Building. May mga quadri-collectibles na din na mabibili sa q-cart sa loob ng campus, and also the upcoming commemorative plate.

UST is also to unveil the tetraglobal.. and also the 3 other campuses, - Santa Rosa, Gen. Santos, and Colombo, Sri Lanka.

i also heard about what markfroilan had posted according the invites, isama na din pala sa celebration ang sinasabing fireworks that would display "UST 400" or "400" lang..

sana lang maging maayos ang pagccelebrate ng UST ng Quadricentennial nito.. and hoping that the whole thomasian community can participate in celebrating with the university.

I hope UST will acquire the services of a really great public relations firm to effectively drum up awareness about the 400th year celebration.

Last I heard, UST got EON public relations, which, honestly, isn't impressive in PR circles.

I also hope that the UST Quadricentennial Committee (or whatever they're called) would TRUTHFULLY listen to inputs from the alumni, particularly the young ones. Just so the celebraton would appeal to everyone.

I hope design estimates of the sports complex would be soundproof outside its halls as this is beside the unupdated engineering and education buildings. Nevertheless, i know the architects have considered noise issues within the school zone.

the sports complex wont occupy the whole greenfield leftside USTs facade facing espana, may be they'll open that space for parking, coz after its construction i think UST will push for its use come UAAP basketball. Oh! ma mi miss ko *** "bato" sa harap ng eng. complex and *** canteen dun na may cakeshop na lasang burak dati when it was functional, *** tambayan namin nila iza calzado, pepo, coke, aiza suegerra, and the rest of CAFA students, hay!!

At sana maging bongga ang media exposure ng UST a few months to the quadricentennial sa kadahilanang ito ang unang-unang unibersidad sa Pinas at sa Asya na magcecelebrate ng 400 years! (Shempre, malamang!)

madadagdagan ang PE choices kasi merong spaces for taekwondo and fencing.

hi guys!

welcome ba ako dito kahit hindi taga-USTE? hehehe actually, im a graduate from UE and isa sa mga frustrations ko ay ang hindi ko lang nasubukang mag-entrance exam sa UST long time ago.

anyway, my elder sister (now based in Florida, USA) is a Sociology graduate bacth '95. na-implwensiyahan na rin ako manood ng UAAP especially during the 1993 season wherein napanood niya ang Growling Tigers, na naka-14-0 game sweep. talagang tuwang-tuwa talaga sila nun at maging sa bonfire hindi sila nagpahuli hehehe

I'm also expecting na sana there will be an exhibition or I should say it na reunion game between UST Tigers of yesteryears and the present batch. Kasi if my memory servces right, Noong 2004, nagkaroon na ng exhibition game eh pero sana mas malupit na reunion game.

My expectations (wishes) for UST before 2011 celebration:

> For all (most) Thomasians to be part of the celebration and be proud of the University. Dami kong kilala meek masyado when it comes to school pride.

> More Center of Excellence and Center of Development for UST courses and colleges, plus higher level of accreditations from Pacucoa.

> Transform each classroom into EDTECH type of classroom complete with the audio-visual equipments plus WIFI.

> UST dominating board exams

> magkaroon sana ng gallery ang UST for all the notable alumni's, to remind mga Tomasino na ibang level ang graduates ng UST from heroes, saints, presidents, national artists, doctors, nurses, beauty queens and celebrities... may tatak UST.

> grand opening ng bagong UST gym "Home of the Growling Tigers". Sana shaped like a Tiger yung design ng gymnasium.

> sana mag-alaga ang UST ng Tiger tapos ilalagay sa may Botanical Garden area. (medyo longshot 'to pero sana lang hehehe.)

> Renovation ng mga lumang buildings sa UST, Eng'g, AB and Med bldg...

> grand homecoming ng mga notable graduates ng University.

^ they beauty of UST is that they don't brag. They don't parade the ones that brings name to the University.

With so many people doing that, the school still maintains a humble apperance. No banners, no frilly celebrations for them. Just some congratulatory remarks*.

The school needs to buy neighboring blocks along Sampaloc area for expansion.

I'm fearful that the other future branches would be assumed to have some specialized courses (like up diliman- up manila, up los banos) not to turn out like dlsu-csb type of stereotypical branding. I'm fearful that they would be able to maintain the quality of the other branches. Specially with the way they handle things here at our dear old Espanya. I'm doubtful and pessimistic of such future expansion projects.

There isn't much interest and press release for this event. There is no noteable alumni association ecept for the USTMA here in USA. Everything is low profile in which they don't really need when you have this kind of millenium event.

They are not all out yet.

try making the entrance exam harder. please, for goodness sake.

student selectivity must improve!, UST is like a market filled with freshies and sophomores! and that's a fact.

publicize more. let us market the Name of the Pontifical University like Ateneo, De La Salle and UP. (kaya tayo under rated eh)

and last but not the least, WE, as thomasians should be proud more than ever. well we cannot deny the fact that we are these type of species living in this world that tends to be very quite and very humble. in such, WE must also take into consideration and even remember that we need to show the world who we are and what we are made of. :) being students and alumni of the Ponitifical University. we should also stop thinking into ourselves that the other big three schools is ahead and even superior to us. UST has been what, three centuries and counting in the history of the philippines? heck, the other schools aforementioned may not exists without the help of the Royal University for the past 397 years in the Philippine History.

More often than not, i just wanted to say how i am proud to be a Thomasian and i am willing to show the world what are we made of.

Proud to be Thomasians @ 400!!

Just my 2 cents.

^kid, we surely can be sophisticated, known and cultured if we remain docile towards the influence of Christian Civilization and the genteel action of the social graces, the arts and humanities.

A typical Thomasian IS conservative and humble. THAT's what sets us apart from the rest; it is our identifying characteristic

Let us be excellent by NOT compromising Truth, humility and moral principles.

UST does attract and produce its own stellar brand of intellectuals, professionals and academicians. So don't think that ateneans or UPians are superior

UST to invite Pope for school’s 400th year rites

Monday, June 9, 2008

The University of Sto. Tomas (UST), considered Asia’s oldest university, is set to invite Pope Benedict XVI to visit the country and grace its 400th founding anniversary in 2011.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said in its website that the pontifical school UST would send an invitation to the Pontiff.

“We are hopeful that the Holy Father will visit the Philippines and UST three years from now,” said UST rector Fr. Rolando de la Rosa.

The university holds three distinct titles: “Royal” granted by King Charles III of Spain in 1785, “Pontifical” bestowed by Pope Leo XIII on Sept 17, 1902, and “The Catholic University of the Philippines” conferred by Pope Pius XII in 1947.

Whenever a Pope goes to the Philippines, he drops by UST. Pope Paul VI visited in November 1970 while John Paul II came in February 1981 for the beatification of Lorenzo Ruiz and the 1995 World Youth Day.

UST was established through the initiative of Bishop Miguel de Benavides, the third Archbishop of Manila, who wanted to put up a seminary-college to prepare young men for priesthood.

It was originally located in Intramuros and was then called Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santisimo Rosario but was later renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas in memory of the foremost Dominican theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas.

The seminary-college, which was founded on April 28, 1611 has now grown into a university with 19 faculties, colleges and institutes, graduating men and women who have become industry, church, school, business and government leaders.

The continuing increase in enrollment prompted the administration in 1927 to move the university campus from Intramuros to its present site in Sampaloc, Manila that covers a total of 21.5 hectares. – Evelyn Macairan

As long as they make the campus cosmopolitan, maximizing all spaces while fully adhering to its functionality I believe UST can pull it off and expect to go up in accrediatiton of facilities and equalize other campuses.

For example, if the wasted space at the side of engineering bldg facing espana where a huge TV screen lords the lacson intersection is converted into a small garden or lounge then we would see students hanging out on that part of UST.

The new Sports Complex and the IT Bldg are okay but I think UST needs to pay more attention on these things:

1. Student selectivity. USTET is just a walk in the park, di ko nga lubos maisip kung bakit inaadvertise pa yan ng mga review centers for incoming freshman.

2. Faculty profile. Sana by 2011, 95% of our university's faculty will have their MS/MA and or PhD's.

3. Research output. Hope that TARC would stand by its name. Sobrang kulang pa kung tutuusin. And sana din the other three satellite campuses (Laguna, Gen San, Sri Lanka) would add vital researches. Kung pwede nga concentrate nalang sa post graduate studies and research.

4. 100% ng programs offered ay COE na by 2011. Achievable naman, sana.

5. More scholars.

Destined to be rector magnificus - again

FATHER Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P. is set to return to the scene of his greatest personal and professional achievement—the rectorship of UST. But even before he became rector during his first stint in the position in 1990, he had already been an “achiever,” according to Fr. Virgilio Ojoy, OP, a former UST vice rector who was De la Rosa’s companion during his days as a Dominican seminarian and as a postgraduate student in Louvain, Belgium.

During their philosophical studies at the Dominican House of Studies (DHS) and their theological studies in UST, De la Rosa passed his exams with flying colors and collected honors replete with the usual arcane but high-sounding Latin phrases (magna cum laude in theology and summa cum laude in Master’s in Higher Religious Studies).

“His brilliant scholastic achievements prefigured his rise as rector of Asia’s oldest higher education institution,” Ojoy said.

Ojoy entered the DHS at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City in 1972. He was a junior to De la Rosa.

As a seminarian, De la Rosa faithfully followed the schedules and rituals of the seminary, said Ojoy, also a former rector of Aquinas University in Legazpi City. “He was diligent, disciplined, and very observant of his duties,” he added.

But De la Rosa was never strait-laced.

Ojoy remembered that De la Rosa was fond of cracking jokes that would “elicit boisterous laughter” from the other seminarians.

His humor indicated his creativity, Ojoy explained. “He was a literary person,” Ojoy said. “He was very good in writing.”

Ojoy added De la Rosa would assist him in editing his manuscripts and papers.

The two seminarians’ writing skills would later find a channel when they joined the UST Varsitarian. De la Rosa entered the paper earlier, becoming editor of Witness, the Church and religious affairs section. Much later, Ojoy would also join the Varsitarian, becoming associate editor.

At DHS, De la Rosa finished AB Philosophy, magna cum laude, in 1977. In 1980, he finished his theology degree, magna cum laude, in UST. He was ordained priest on April 3, 1982.

In 1984, he earned his Licentiate in Sacred Theology, magna cum Laude, and Master of Arts in Higher Religious Studies, summa cum Laude, both from UST.

Armed with a scholarship grant, he went to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium for his postgraduate studies. In 1988, he received from Louvain a civil doctoral degree in Higher Religious Studies and an ecclesiastical doctoral degree in Sacred Theology, both magna cum laude.

Ojoy was also taking up his Master’s in Theology at Louvain at around the same time.

In Belgium, Ojoy recalled how competitive De la Rosa was as a postgraduate student. He noted how serious a student he was as compared to the other international students.

“He sets goals which are reasonably practical, a goal that he knows he can achieve,” Ojoy said about De la Rosa. This goal-setting trait would explain De la Rosa’s later success as UST rector.

De la Rosa would not let anyone distract or hamper him, Ojoy recalled. For example, when he would write a term paper, De la Rosa would faithfully focus on the task and would refuse to entertain visitors or accept invitations to go out with friends.

Coming back to the Philippines after his Louvain studies, De la Rosa was appointed regent of the College of Education, then assistant secretaty general, and much later, full-fledged secretary general.

In 1990, when Fr. Norberto Castillo, another Varsitarian alumnus, ended his term as rector, De la Rosa was elected to replace him.

Ojoy said no one was surprised when De la Rosa, at that time only 37 years old, became rector. It was the same reaction when De la Rosa was hauled back from semi-retirement last September and appointed acting rector after the resignation of Fr. Ernesto Arceo, OP.

Ojoy said it is De la Rosa’s “destiny” to return as UST rector.

Troubled start

But when he became rector in 1990 at a very young age, De la Rosa was not exactly the envy of everyone. UST was facing industrial unrest and De la Rosa had to deal with several labor disputes.

Particularly pressing was the hospital labor dispute.

The Santo Tomas University Employees Association (STUEA) had filed a notice of strike with the labor department, citing unfair labor practice and Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) violations by management.

De la Rosa immediately proposed a “living wage” to the employees as set by the National Economic and Development Authority.

According to the Varsitarian’s Nov. 5, 1991 issue, De la Rosa proposed a salary increase of P1,010.29. He also proposed “to continue to upgrade the salaries through a system of promotion and incentives based on work performance and qualification of employees.”

Because of De la Rosa’s timely intervention, a strike was prevented and industrial peace prevailed in the hospital and on campus.

Academic and research excellence

De la Rosa then focused on his pet projects: fostering excellence in UST’s curricular programs and cultivating a culture of research among the faculty.

As if to emphasize research, De la Rosa had the Central Library Bldg. constructed. He also renovated the UST Archives so as to better service researchers and historians. It was also during his time that the groundwork was laid for the setting up of the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex, which was envisioned to house all of UST’s research centers in the natural and social sciences.

UST’s pre-eminent status as the country’s foremost Catholic university was cemented when several of its programs were declared centers of excellence and development by the Commission on Higher Education.

Declared centers of excellence were Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Nursing, Electronic and Communications Engineering, Accountancy, Physical Therapy, Music, Architecture, Literature and Philosophy. Declared centers of development were Biology, Business Administration, and Engineering programs.

It was also during De le Rosa’s time that it enjoyed a deregulated status.

“It was a big help to the University to be considered as a deregulated school. In the first place, it somehow occasioned a self-examination whether we are worthy of such status. We also learned to pinpoint those areas in the University that needed to be improved if we want to maintain that status in the future,” De la Rosa was quoted as saying.

Student services

Perhaps because of De la Rosa’s youth, students warmed up to him. It helped that De la Rosa as a priest had a pastoral spirit that made him easily reach out and relate to the students.

It was along this spirit that De la Rosa established the Office of the Campus Ministry in 1990. The Center was tasked to organize retreats and recollections for the students, the better to deepen their spirituality and bind together the campus.

Knowing fully well that the language of the media had become the language of the youth, De la Rosa also established the Educational Technology Center (EdTech), which produces educational media that could aid in classroom instruction.

The EdTech had a television studio where programs could be produced and aired.

The center also had an editing and production room with cutting-edge equipment (video cassette player, an editing controller, a digital video-audio-visual mixer, three color monitors, one multi laser disc player, an audio-mixer and a special effects generator).

The center’s preview room was equipped with four 21-inch color monitors, two videocassette players, and two omni-vision players.

EdTech also had a radio room with an audio-mixer, stereo double cassette tape deck, an analog delay machine and a two-channel power amplifier.

UAAP sweep

De la Rosa had personally pledged to work for the unity of the Thomasian community. He was able to achieve this by dealing with industrial unrest and making Thomasians proud about their curricular, research and extra-curricular programs and accomplishments.

De la Rosa’s efforts were boosted in 1993 when after 29 years, the UST Growling Tigers took home the UAAP basketball championship again by sweeping the games without missing a beat or losing a battle.

Because UST won the championship in grand fashion, one newspaper editorial proclaimed, “God is a Thomasian!”

The championship would be repeated three more times. And each time, De la Rosa would be in the midst of the packed crowd, cheering for the Tigers and urging other Thomasians to support them.

The Rector would wear a white shirt embossed with the Tiger image in yellow and black stripes.

“It was an eye-catching scene for Thomasian ringside spectators, what with their number one official spending his vocal chords, executing the now patented UST wave, and clapping his palms numb in a tremendous display of support to the cage team,” the Varsitarian reported in its Nov. 13, 1996 issue.

De la Rosa said he was not conscious about his rooting and the possibility that he was demeaning his position as a result.

“I do not feel any uneasiness doing all those things. After all, I am sure everybody is watching the game. Nobody is watching me,” he told the Varsitarian.

Papal visit

Perhaps the high point of De la Rosa’s rectorship came in 1995 when Pope John Paul II visited UST again (the first was in 1981 when the Pope came to Manila to beatify Lorenzo Ruiz and his companion-martyrs, most of them alumni of UST).

The Pope’s 1995 visit was in connection with the 10th World Youth Day which Manila was hosting.

The visit was noteworthy for De la Rosa’s rectorship since the Vatican had originally not wanted the Pope to make a visit again of UST, a pontifical university.

This was because another university—a Jesuit institution--had been initially chosen to host the International Youth Forum (IYF), the “United Nations” conference of young people from around the world which was a highlight of the World Youth Day. The school that would host the IYF would be the school that the Pope would visit.

De la Rosa showed again his competitive spirit by making moves to have the Vatican decision not to award UST the right to host IYF reconsidered. In the campaign, he enlisted the support of no less than Cardinal Jaime Sin, the powerful archbishop of Manila.

But since the Vatican representative arranging the Pope’s visit was a Jesuit, the campaign seemed a long shot.

And in fact, when the Vatican representative came, UST was not part of his itinerary since it had apparently been already decided that the IYF would be hosted by the Jesuit institution.

But according to Henrietta de Villa, the lay leader assisting in the Vatican’s preparations, the Vatican representative suddenly found himself being brought to UST apparently on orders of Cardinal Sin.

In UST, De la Rosa and the Thomasian community showered the Vatican representative with hospitality and gently made their case on why UST should be chosen to host the IYF.

Toward the end of the day, the Vatican representative declared: “I am a Jesuit but I choose UST.” Thus, it came to pass that UST became the only Catholic university in this part of the world to have been graced by papal presence not once (Paul VI in 1970), not twice (John Paul II in 1981), but thrice (John Paul II again in 1995).

For De la Rosa, for UST to welcome again John Paul the Great was like “love the second-time around.”

“Holy Father,” he told the Pope at the UST Grandstand before some 200,000 people, “it is said that love is lovelier the second time around. Today, we hope that the love you feel for us Filipinos has doubled in intensity because this is your second visit to the Philippines.”

The Pope thanked De la Rosa for his “kind words of welcome” and added, “As a Pontifical University, Santo Tomas has a special right to the Pope’s attention.”

Outbreak

Perhaps the most severe crisis that affected UST during De la Rosa’s first stint as rector was the hepatitis outbreak in 1997.

After the Christmas vacation in 1996, UST was rocked by the rise of hepatitis cases. From 28 students contracting the virus before the Christmas break, the number jumped to 475 in February 1997.

Investigations by the UST Student Health Service, Department of Health, and Manila Health Department showed that presence of coliform bacilli in the cistern tanks in the High School Building, the Cooperative Canteen, St. Raymund’s Building, and St. Martin de Porres Building.

But the presence of coliform couldn’t explain the outbreak as hepatitis is caused by a different bacterium altogether.

Nevertheless, UST suffered negative publicity, and for De la Rosa, whom close friends said was sensitive to criticism and was conscious always of the need to provide UST a positive public image, the controversy was very painful.

But De la Rosa showed he was up to the crisis. He activated UST’s public information system to assure the public that something was being done to contain the outbreak as well as to check disinformation and black propaganda by the enemies of UST.

Not leaving the victims unattended, De la Rosa offered them assistance, particularly granting them hospital privileges and benefits.

De la Rosa’s administration also closely scrutinized food establishments inside the University.

By March, the outbreak was contained.

No retirement

When he stepped down in 1998, De la Rosa said he wanted to take it easy since “I’ve been working since I was seven years old.”

But it wasn’t meant to be. He was elected prior of the St. Thomas Aquinas Priory, the community of Dominicans based in UST.

In 2003, the then provincial, Fr. Ernesto Arceo, OP, invoked obedience and ordered him to assume the rectorship of Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Calamba. The following year, he was appointed by President Macapagal-Arroyo as chairman of the Commission on Higher Education.

He resigned as CHEd chair in 2005 and rejoined UST, assuming several administrative positions that seemed to presage his comeback as rector of UST.

But by the start of schoolyear 2007-2008, De la Rosa had practically shed all his administrative positions in UST and was happy to be just a regular professor of the UST Ecclesiastical Faculties while earning a reputation as a good retreat master and preacher in several recollections for the diocesan clergy around the country.

De la Rosa had been settling down to semi-retirement when Arceo and the rest of UST’s key leadership resigned last September over the controversy over how best to redevelop and expand the UST Hospital.

The Master of the Order of Preachers, Vatican-based Fr. Jose Carlos Azpiroz, accepted the resignations and looked for a new leadership in UST.

Azpiroz didn’t have to look far. De la Rosa was not only an old hand in the rectorship; he was also a former chair of the CHEd and was respected not only by his Dominican brethren, but also by his peers in the higher education establishment here and abroad.

But where was De la Rosa?

He was in the Visayas ostensibly giving a retreat. Some say he was really there in hiding since he had an inkling he would be drafted again to the rectorship.

But the Dominican Master General’s emissary was able to locate him, and De la Rosa was given the official order—in Latin and invoking obedience—to be rector again of UST even on an acting capacity.

The next month, De la Rosa was elected as a regular rector. Last April, the Vatican’s Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education confirmed his election.

The rest may be history, but for Father Ojoy, the rest is really destiny.

“Yes, it is destiny because there seems to be no one else to lead the Thomasian community,” Ojoy said. “I hope the Rector will plant the seeds for the University to ascend to greater heights.” Nikki Q. Angulo, John Constantine G. Cordon, and Aura Marie P. Dagcutan

And i hope they will give again brochures showing the grandeur of ust just like what they gave on the applicants (the glossy magazine-like magazine but it needs more improvement because konti lang yung pics and i think they need to put the names of our famous alumni) when i was in highschool (2002).

I'm also confident that I can make it to UST even if they tighten the quality of their admission test. So, you are agreeing that their admission test is more like a hs sophomore's final exam?

I would like to believe that UST doesn't do it "bongga". They do it in little grand manner not bongga things.

Bongga is so pang masa.

uhmmm... then it should NOT be named college placement test.

it should not be named college at all as the contents are far from a collegiate level.

Where did you get that second sentence? Seriously.

Begging for a food stub was never an option for me and putting it on as being a "Thomasian" is not proper for anybody (aim higher and do something more productive people) . Having the company of friends and discovering what the world has to offer is more of my friends and my criteria of being a "Thomasian".

"In the name of God. Amen."

Aba buti naman at sinisimulan na ito. Ang swerte ng mga USTedyante ngayon ha!

New sports complex ready by 2011

Sports No. 2 Vol. LXXX
WITH THE groundwork already in place, it’s now just a matter of time before the new home of the perennial UAAP general champions rises at the heart of the UST campus.

The four-story UST Sports Complex, whose groundbreaking was held last July 29, is set to be finished by 2011 in time for the University’s quadricentennial anniversary, said Fr. Roberto Pinto O. P., director of the Facilities Management Office.

An amount of roughly P500 million was allotted for the 65.98 x 76-square meter sports complex that will cover the entire land area where the Engineering sports complex and an adjacent football field is currently located.

The structure will include training areas for gymnastics, aerobics, taekwondo, judo, table tennis, fencing, and badminton at the ground floor.

It will also include a ticket counter, museum display, guidance office, and a dance hall for the Salinggawi Dance Troupe, fitness room, concessionaire, a mini bank, and the College of Rehabilitation Sciences office.

A mezzanine will hold four classrooms and spaces for costume storage.

The main basketball court, surrounded by bleachers rising up to the fourth floor of the building, will be situated at the center of the second floor. Along with the court are lounges for the players, one each for both the home and visiting teams. A concessionaire and souvenir shops will also be put up at the bleachers.

The second floor will hold the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) office, which is currently located at the entrance of the UST gymnasium along P. Noval Street. The institute will have a faculty room and other multimedia rooms for students. An indoor track will be built on the third floor.

Designed by Architects Jose Pedro C. Recio and Carmelo T. Rosas, the rooms in the sports complex will also be equipped with sound-proof technology to keep nearby classes regulated from noise.

The new complex will not totally displace the present gymnasium, Pinto said. The old structure would still be available for athletic purposes.

“It (the current gymnasium) is already a part of UST’s heritage because it existed since 1927,” he said. “It was considered a state-of-the-art building during that era.” Mika Rafaela A. Barrios

New sports complex ready by 2011

Pero naman, undertaking this project would pose a serious challenge to engineers and designers. Parang I doubt kung may magpapark sa ilalim kung tag-ulan because doing so would really give justice to the warning: "Park at your own risk."

Exciting yung UST Sports Complex. At a cost of P500 million, I expect it to be nothing less than grand.

Dapat may indoor pool at tennis courts!

I think UST should maximize the land area sa Espana campus, ihiwalay ang Graduate school sa espana campus, dalhin sa Makati to attract more business professionals.

Or kaya kunin nila yung Locsin architectural firm.

Looking Back
‘Royal and Pontifical’

By Ambeth Ocampo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:28:00 08/13/2008

When I made the mistake of asking Teodoro Agoncillo a what-if question on history, he winced. Normally, that would have been followed by a crisp expletive but instead he advised, “Why waste your energy on something that did not happen, when just establishing what really happened is a fulltime job.”

Sometimes, I replied, what did not happen is more interesting than what happened.

Setting the defunct Colegio de San Ignacio founded by the Jesuits in 1590 against the Dominican-run University of Santo Tomas, the oldest existing university in the Philippines, that carries the honorific title “Royal and Pontifical,” drew kind comments from the eminent Dominican historian Fidel Villaroel who emailed last July 31, the Feast of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, to invite me to join him in tracing some historical steps as follows:

“The Colegio de San Ignacio was founded in 1590, and opened in 1595, 16 years before the Colegio de Santo Tomas, founded in 1611. San Ignacio was given ‘the faculty to confer university degrees’ in 1621 when a papal brief of Paul V granted that privilege to all the Jesuit colleges in the Indies. In 1619, the same Pope granted the same faculty to all Dominican colleges of the New World. Both papal decrees arrived in Manila in 1625. And both colleges here began to confer degrees. With regard to Santo Tomas, in 1645, Pope Innocent X reinforced that privilege by a papal bull elevating the college to the rank of academia, which the Dominicans interpreted a university, against the interpretation of the Jesuits. I am not sure whether San Ignacio received a similar bull at that time.

“God knows how many long and useless discussions were held between the two schools. What is certain is that in 1734, both schools became universities of ‘General Studies’ in the strict sense, when both established a non-ecclesiastical faculty of Jurisprudence or Civil Law. Since then, two real universities co-existed in Manila. But not for a long time, because the University of San Ignacio disappeared 30 years later when the Jesuits were expelled from the Philippines in 1768.”

Tracing the Ateneo de Manila University to the Colegio de San Ignacio was confusing, so Father Villaroel said: “The Jesuits did return in 1859 to resume their old and glorious mission here, but the Ateneo does not go back to the Colegio de San Ignacio. It goes back to a modest primary school, Escuela Pía de Manila, initiated in 1803 by a certain Don Pedro Vivanco and taken over by the municipality in 1817 (and renamed Ateneo Municipal), which the city entrusted to the Jesuits in 1859. San Ignacio as a pontifical university needs a little more discussion. In your column you stated twice that the Jesuit colegio [of San Ignacio] was also the first to be granted the exalted title and status of ‘royal and pontifical university’ before UST; and also that ‘it [San Ignacio] became in 1732 the first royal and pontifical university in the Philippines.’

“A look at the list of the present pontifical universities will illustrate the singular privilege granted to the University of Santo Tomas by the apostolic constitution Quae Mari Sinico in 1902. Anuario Pontificio, the annual official directory of the Holy See, in its edition for the year 2000, lists all the Catholic and or Pontifical institutes of higher learning, grouping them into two categories: Roman Ateneums and Catholic Universities. Only 24 are called Pontifical, and of these 24, six are located in Rome (Gregorian University, Lateran University, Urbanian University, University of Santo Tomas [known as The Angelicum], Salisian University and Holy Cross University); three are in Europe; fourteen in Latin America; and one in Asia, this one being the University of Santo Tomas of Manila.

“The oldest university to be denominated by the Holy See as Pontifical is the Jesuit Gregorian University in Rome. Although founded in 1551, it was Pope Pius IX who, in 1873, permitted the school to assume the title of ‘Pontifical University.’” All the other abovementioned 23 universities received the title of Pontifical in the 20th century. The University of Santo Tomas of Manila (UST), the oldest of them (founded in 1611), is second only to the Gregorian University to be declared Pontifical by the apostolic constitution Quae Mari Sinico in 1902.

“Was UST called Pontifical much earlier than 1902. In fact, references to it as ‘Royal and Pontifical’ are frequently seen in printed speeches and sermons delivered by Dominican rectors and professors to the Pontifical University. The same title is given to it in the official ‘Estatutos de la Real y Pontificia Universidad de Santo Tomas de Manila’ drafted in the years 1734, 1785 and 1859. It also appears in almost all the 12 seals used by the university through the centuries. But in all those instances, the title of Pontifical was self-given, from below (from the university) not from above (from Rome). The papal documents before 1902 always referred to the institution as universitas, or academia or lyceum, etc. of Santo Tomas, not as Pontificia or Pontifical. It was not until 1902 that Leo XIII endowed it with the official title of ‘Pontifical University of Santo Tomas.’ From these premises any reader can draw conclusions about the ‘pontifical’ title of San Ignacio, a nonexistent institution since 1786.”

By Dr. Jaime I. Romero

When Msgr. Miguel de Benavides, O.P., a Dominican and Third Archbishop of Manila bequeathed his library and goods valued at P1,500 in 1611 as a nucleus of resources to form the oldest existing university in Asia, the University of Santo Tomas, little did he know that 25 years later, in 1636, a Presbyterian pastor in the new American colony of Massachusetts, Rev. John Harvard, was going to do the same thing – donate his 400-volume library and 780 Pounds Sterling in cash – to get the oldest university in America, Harvard, started.

Fr. de Benavides established his school 90 years after Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines, while Rev. Harvard founded his 144 years after Christopher Columbus discovered America.

The year 1611 was not a good time to found a school in the Philippines. The Isnegs in northwest Cagayan, led by Miguel Lanag, were revolting against Spain, having just looted some houses and beheaded the Dominican missionary, Fr. Alonzo Garcia, before burning his church and fleeing to the mountains of Apayao. At the same time, the Dutch menace was tormenting the Spanish authorities in Manila. Dutchman Oliver van Noort steered his two ships close to Manila, but the Spaniards put up a fight and when the Dutch lost a ship and one of their captains, Francois Wittert, the invaders left and fled for Borneo.

Elsewhere in the world, the Britishers had just authorized the use of the King James version of the Bible. In Italy, Galileo Galilei had just finished publishing Sidereal Messenger, describing his telescopic observations of the heavens, validating Nicholas Copernicus’ earlier mathematical observations on the movement of the planets, including earth, around the sun. Australia has just been discovered by Willem Janszoon.

In fact, when the Dominican priest was busy starting UST, the rave in the American colonies then was Pocahontas – not the movie – but the Indian princess in Jamestown, Virginia (and daughter of King Powhatan), who married a farmer John Rolfe, was held captive, then used as ransom for other captured Jamestown colonists.

Such were the times and events in the Philippines and the world when the University of Santo Tomas was formed.

PRODUCER OF PATRIOTS, PRESIDENTS, LEADERS

Now, almost 400 years since that historic donation in the Philippines, UST is one of the most venerable institutions of higher learning in the world, having graduated national heroes, 4 presidents, numerous senators, Supreme Court chief justices, saints, martyrs, artists, 26 delegates to the 1934 Constitutional Convention, 46 delegates to the 1972 Charter, sportsmen, builders, doctors, businessmen, and other leaders in a variety of fields required in the process of building a nation.

The story of UST cannot be complete without the mention of its illustrious alumni who, over the years, walked through the Arch of the Centuries with dignity, like: Dr. Jose Rizal, Apolinario Mabini, Frs. Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora, the martyrs; Presidents Manuel Luis Quezon, Sergio Osmeña, Jose P. Laurel, and Diosdado Macapagal; Senators Claro M. Recto, Jose Yulo, Juan Sumulong, and Rafael Palma; Supreme Court Justices Cayetano Arellano (first Filipino Supreme Court Justice), Manuel Araullo, and Ramon Avancena; Secretary of Justice Gregorio Araneta; drafter of the Constitution of the First Republic, Felipe Calderon; Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, Florentino Torres; Director of the Public Library, Epifanio de los Santos; Mayor of Manila, Arsenio Lacson; and founders of the SGV accounting firm, Washington SyCip and Alfredo Velayo.

How did UST get from then to now? Through almost 400 years of experience in moral, education, and cultural formation; imparted in the highest level of both civil and sacred services; and promoted according to reason as enlightened by the Catholic faith and doctrine, that’s how.

The highlights of UST over its long life include the titles it has earned, such as: “The Royal University,” granted by King Charles III of Spain on March 7, 1785; “Pontifical University,” granted by Pope Leo XIII on Sept. 17, 1902; and “Catholic University,” granted by Pope Pius XII in 1947; and “The Civil Order of Alfonso X el Sabio,” Spain’s highest decoration for cultural and scientific achievements granted on July 18, 1961. The Colegio de Santo Tomas was elevated to a university by order of Pope Innocent X in 1645.

UST is also the only university, Catholic or not, to have been visited by two popes three times: once by Pope Paul VI on Nov. 28, 1970, and twice by Pope John Paul II on Feb. 18, 1981 and January 13, 1995.

It is the one university campus used by invaders, combatants, and internees alike during the various wars of conquest or revolutions during its four centuries of life. First, in 1762, the invading British used the UST buildings as temporary quarters for British officers. Next, during the Philippine revolution of 1898 to 1899, UST was converted into quarters for volunteers from among the professors and students. Afterwards, the Intramuros campus was turned into a hospital for the wounded during the revolutionary war. Finally, during the Second World War, the Japanese Occupational Forces used the Intramuros building for their troops, and the UST Main Building as a concentration camp for 4,000 foreign civilians they held prisoner.

MANY FIRSTS

It has notched many firsts in Philippine culture and history: Oldest school of Philosophy (1611); oldest museum in the Philippines (1682); oldest canon law school (1732); oldest school of Medicine and Surgery (1871); and oldest school of Pharmacy (1871).

It was one of the first universities in the Philippines to become co-educational when it admitted women for the first time in the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1924. A year later, it became one of the first universities in the Philippines to require the use of English as a medium of instruction, to replace Spanish. When it was appropriate to Filipinize the administration, Fr. Leonardo Z. Legazpi, O.P., on Oct. 9, 1971, became the first Filipino Rector of UST.

In terms of peer recognition, UST is considered one of the four top universities in the Philippines, and one of the top 100 in Asia.

Although many people know UST to be that 21.5-hectare university campus in España, Manila, it had not always been located there. The university spent over 300 years of its existence in Intramuros, bounded specifically by Aduana St. in the North, Plaza de España, Plaza de Santo Tomas, and the Ayuntamiento Building in the West. Prompted by increasing enrollments, which exceeded 1,000 students (large by 1920 standards), the Dominican fathers started looking elsewhere for expansion. Hence, the move to the present site in 1927, known then as Sulucan, Sampaloc, as soon as the first edifice, the magnificent, earthquake resistant Main Building, was completed by Fr. Roque Ruaño, O.P., the engineer-priest.

That move was providential because 18 years later, Japanese Army soldiers completely occupied the UST Intramuros campus and totally destroyed the 333-year old building during the Second World War.

The Dominicans, having introduced the first printing press in the Philippines, and indeed printed the first book in the Philippines, the Doctrina Christiana, were fortunate to have been able to transfer the UST printing press from Intramuros to the España campus in the nick of time in 1940, a year before the Pearl Harbor incident.

Other momentous physical transfers were the French-made bronze statue of Fr. Benavides, initially unveiled in 1891, and uncovered a second time at the new campus on Nov. 13, 1946. The Arch of the Centuries, which was the main gate in Intramuros, was reconstructed and transferred to its current site in 1954.

TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE

Significantly, intangible things hoarded in the collective memory of a nation are the traditions of excellence, integrity, and competence, known to many as the Thomasian spirit, which now resides in the hearts and minds of our leaders and professionals.

With such an illustrious past, it has not even started to rest on its laurels as it looks forward, with anticipation, to celebrating its Quadricentennial in 2011. UST is constantly reengineering itself to be at par with the best universities in the world through the hiring of more Ph.D.s among its faculty, constant and continuous faculty development, and the updating of its library resources, now one of the largest in Asia.

No less than the President of the Philippines, through ceremonies held at the Malacañang Palace, honored two UST graduates as among the 50 Top Men and Women of Science on the 50th anniversary of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). Moreover, UST’s graduates are currently recognized as Outstanding Professionals by the Professional Regulation Commission for outstanding achievements in Engineering, Chemistry, Physical Therapy, Pharmacy, Architecture, and Electronics.

UST is also topping the government licensure examinations in many fields, such as the recently-released Professional Regulation Commission board examinations in Nursing, Pharmacy, Architecture, Nutrition, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Engineering, and Medicine.

With its 40,000 students, it is the largest Catholic university in the world with that many students in one campus.

After a stringent evaluation by the Commission on Higher Education (ChEd), UST’s College of Education is now the latest unit in the university to be hailed a Center of Excellence. Earlier recognized for the same honors are the colleges of Architecture, Chemistry, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Literature, Medicine and Surgery, Music, Nursing, and Philosophy. Likewise, UST is now a Center of Development for Biology, Business Administration, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Industrial, and Mechanical Engineering.

In preparation for 2011, UST is establishing campuses outside España. Soon to rise will be the campus in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, and another one is forthcoming in General Santos City in Mindanao. Through these campuses, UST will be able to provide Filipinos with the characteristic holistic formation that has been a hallmark of this Thomasian institution. The mantra is excellence in instruction, expertise in research, and eminence in community service.

The steadfast mission of UST to build a strong Christian community firmly grounded on Thomasian traditions of technology transfer and values formation cannot but carry it forward to another 400 years of unending grace.

Hinde ba gagawing parang "hall" yung lumang gym? I heard while I'm still in UST na kapag ginawa yung sports complex gagawin nilang hall yung lumang gym para sa mga events at graduation na din para hindi na magrent sa PICC.

hindi nila magiba ang old gym kasi may historical value na yun, sabi eh it was constructed almost at the same time as the main building 1927+ and it was considered state-of-the-art back then.

UST Mongolia?E matagal na pala may UST sa rome bakit di tayo nakikipag coordinate dun or anything like it - well wala akong naririnig e, may UST Ethiopia na nga nag open this month e. UST sri lanka, UST Gen San, UST baguio, UST Sta Rosa - kahit ilang UST pa ang itayo kelangan may close ties and synergy lahat ng UST worldwide para ma alleviate natin ang education and in turn *** image natin ** sa local scene - and probably ma depose ang big 3 lethargy.

FYI, the highest peak in baguio is Mt. Santo Tomas where a convent thrives, rings a bell who likely owns that slab of mountain?hehe, why not create a high powered telescope observatory that would rival UP's Ismed.

They are part of the 401-500 category then arranged alphabetically na sila. MALI ang Inquirer.

Regarding R&D, UST has one of the biggest research funding in the country pegged at almost 60 million per year. The real problem is the research culture in our dear University. ´Relatively new pa ito sa UST at konti lang ang faculty interested to do research.

good point. finally. matinong post.

UST needs to cut its student population. by doing that, UST would become selective.
UST needs to train their faculty and encourage them to take up grad and postgrad courses
UST needs to participate and/ or join organizations that are international in scope. umpisahan nila sa ASEAN University Network - http://www.aun-sec.org/member_u.html
UST needs to strengthen its ties with prestigious foreign universities
UST needs to upgrade its professional schools
UST needs to upgrade its graduate and postgradaute schools
UST needs to employ visiting faculty from a top global school
and if possible, UST should strengthen its alumni network and encourage them to give back to the university

Isipin nyo nalang ito: W.Sycip of SGV has given more money to UP than he has to UST, his alma mater school. He also sent his children and grandchildren to UP, not to UST. What does this tells me?

Wooo!

Hahaha, sa 2011 mag-iinvite ako ng mga UP friends ko... then lolokohin ko sila, "ITO ANG TUNAY NA SELEBRASYON - ENGRANDE! Hala, kumain na kayo ng gusto nyo..."

Sana magpaunlak si Viva Vasag sa 2011 na tumambling paikot sa USTe from Lacson to España tapos Noval papuntang Dapitan tapos isang ikot pa habang umuulan at unti-unting tumataas ang tubig sa campus. Very dramatic itong eksenang ito o!
