hello! anyway i've always wanted to buy a record done from
before the 50's. Any suggestion? i've always like it kase esp.
when i hear it on war movies (40's). Actually right now,
my neighbor is playing old songs (girl singing opera-like/jazzy).
Sarap pakinggan :)

Start with the songbooks of major American composers like Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, the Gershwins. Verve Records releases a compilation of their best songs sung by major jazz artists like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Louis Armstrong, and even underrated singers like Ernestine Anderson, Morgana King and Margaret Whiting. These are the names of singers whose voices you heard in war movies.
In DON'T SAY A WORD, the "Dream A Little Dream" song sung by Brittany Murphy was revealed later on in the film as a song she heard as a kid. It was Ella Fitzgerald's version that is heard.
Woody Allen films usually feature these type of songs (though a bit Dixieland at times).

hi Groucho, thanks for the Ella Fitzgerald recommendation. I just
downloaded her song 'Someone to watch over me'. I like it!
I wish my gf is here right now :) That's a killer track, nice mood-setting for.... :) dancing :)
Any more 'should-have' songs from her?

To answer your question: "Everything!" (apologies from ALMOST FAMOUS).
Ella Fitzgerald was not called the First Lady of Song for nothing. Practically everything she recorded was magic, and to quote Mel Torme: (another great jazz singer who was Ella's contemporary, and who was responsible for the song "The Christmas Song".. you know .... "chestnuts roasting on an open fire..") "Ella never had a single dud record. Ever!"
That said, you can sample Ella's artistry via her records between 1949 and 1966 (said to be the peak of her vocal prowess). She has a lot of songbooks that paid tribute to the composers I mentioned in an earlier post. Highly recommended is her Cole Porter songbook where she sang famous songs like "I Get a Kick Out of You", "I've Got You Under My Skin" alongside some rarities like "Dream Dancing". But you can skirt all these songbooks and instead buy the single disc called: The Best of the Songbooks. Make sure its the Verve label that releases it. Other compilation album of hers take the tracks from her Pablo years (c. 1975 to the late 1980s) and her vocals may not be to your liking. Not that its bad, but the sheer perfection achieved in her earlier years cannot be surpassed, not even by her during her Pablo years. That "Best of" album I was recommending to you comes in various musical moods: there is the "Ballads: The Best of the Songbook" as well as the swingers. You can't go wrong with her. Also, the cover features a slender caricature of Ella -- which is not really accurate as she was on the rotund side during the years those songs were cut.
That disc contains very good renditions of songs very very hard to equal by any singer. She is that good.
If you can wait a bit, I can burn you a sampler from my Ella collection, but you will have to wait until early December 2001 for that as I am currently in between time zones and do not have the luxury of time for burning CDs.
In any case, good luck on your musical journeys!
Postscript: You can also try the vocal outputs of Saran Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Betty Carter, Anita O'Day and others to compare. Or you can just buy the albums of younger jazz neotraditionalists like Diana Krall, Cassandra Wilson, Stacy Kent, Diane Schuur and Dianne Reeves.

some suggestions:
Glenn Miller
Charlie Christian (get "The Genius of Electric Guitar" and check out the songs "Rose Room" and "Seven Come Eleven")
Benny Goodman
Edith Piaf
Duke Ellington

You could also cheat and buy film soundtracks with music like that, so you get a sampler of everything. One OST that I like which has a tiny bit of old music is The English Patient soundtrack. Try it.
And Ella Fitzgerald *is* a good choice. Try getting one of her "Best of..." albums from Tower's jazz section :)

hey don't forget miles davies and john coltrane! legendary instrumentalists!

Billie Holiday is the no. 1 choice. You can also try Screaming Jay Hawkins and Eddie Harris. These musicians are marked blues, pero okay silang pakinggan. It's like you're in a dimly lit pub, smoky, with cobwebs in every nook and then lots of beers. Hinde! That's just my weird imagination every time i listen to their songs.

Or better yet try mo rin si Nina Simone. her soothing deep voice is fantastic. yes, yes, she has that "guy" voce, like Tracy Chapman's. but she's a legend already. I mean she's still alive, living in France. but damn! her voice is so cool!
Check out "Sinnerman," "He Needs Me," "Don't Smoke in Bed," and of course "Black is the Color of my Skin."
Toll!

I will continue recommending (he calls it wh0ring) this to faaip until he succumbs to my will
Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw
Pros:
-No vocals, all instrumental songs that convey emotions much more effectively and without taint
-Simple yet technical, mellow and heavy at the same time, chord progressions are excellent
-Seven songs give you an hour of very aerial soundscapes and slow/mid-tempo bliss
Cons:
-If you have a short attention span, you just won't get it
-Sounds better when listened to several times as a whole
-Dethroned Opeth as my favorite band
Recommended Tracks:
All. As with vocals, song titles are irrelevant and the album is best experienced when taken in as a whole.

Beautiful freak - Eels

cons: Classified as hard to find album. Not your radiofriendly type of song.
Recommended tracks:

The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
PROS:
- Omar and Cedric successfully deliver the substance, technique, toughness and melody in a tad over an hour.
- Frances knows no bounds musically. Metal, punk, jazz, salsa, etc. are respresented throughout, and that's a good thing.
- Please excuse the bias, but the boys of Volta hail from my home state of Texas.
CONS:
- Can't find one except that the album's not designed for the casual listener. Enthusiasts of Simple Plan, Kelly Clarkson or any of the so-called Champions will find it hard to take in even five seconds of the disc.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS:
The entire album.

pros: This is the best album for me during the grunge era. If you would listen to it and compare it to any of Nirvana's or Pearl Jam albums, I don't get tired listening to it. This album is a real-filler.
cons: If you try to play this album in full-volume, your parents may yell at you. Good for converting to MP3 and playing it at your MP3 player.

i agree on the superunknown post, jiggy4:20. it has gotten me through a lot of stoned depressed times, heheh. good pick. one of my faves of all time.
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
pros: one of the best hiphop albums ever, Shadows' skills at the tables and sampling at its ultimate peak. there are pianos, funk guitar samples, oldschool beats, jazz licks and nod-out trippin' basslines
cons: not everyone appreciates this sh*t tho... a lot of slow THC laced rhythms and weird breaks and stuff... people into experimental / instrumental hiphop, "triphop" stuff, DJ Spooky and uhh remotely, Portishead might like this though...
phat tracks: Midnight in a Perfect World, Mutual Slump, Building Steam with a Grain of Salt

Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
Pros:
- The artists managed to exploit the good points of modern rock and new wave...which can be heard in this album...
- The effects and drums...give off that modern new wave feel...with a lot of spunk...
- The jive is quite catchy...but not to the point of being cheesy...their music is quite addictive to the weary ear...
- The album is a good buy...since there are lots of standout tracks...
- The drums are excellent...
Cons:
- some of their songs sound the same...
- some of the songs are a bit too "experimental" and can be deemed as forced issues...
Standout Tracks:
- Like Eating Glass
- Helicopter
- Positive Tension
- Banquet
- So Here We Are...

I strongly recommend checking out the Lito Cruz Tide's collaboration with GMA-7, "Songs From And Inspired By The Teleserye Daisy Siyete". Ever heard a glam rock version of the Daisy Siyete theme? Or the Sex Bomb Singers backing up yours truly on a glam rock version of Ispageti? Plas thinks it's an awesome album to watch for.
Right, Plas? :)

Hi. Would you recommend a good rap/hiphop album (from various artists) available in our local music stores today? Preferably with Ludacris on and a more recent one. I hardly watch MTV or listen to the radio these days so I don't know much about music anymore but I kind of like that genre although I listen to all sorts of music. I just happen to like it a lot at the moment because I'm playing GTA: San Andreas and I'm loving the rap music there!
Thanks!

Copeland - In Motion
Pros:
- Aaron Marsh's singing
- Excellent use of melody and heaviness, catchy hooks, good drumming (from a non-technical standpoint)
- Nothing special (see cons) but if you want accessible indie rock done right, this band is it
Cons:
- May sound like generic pop rock or alternative to some
- Lyrics are a bit cheesy and uninspired (for better lyrics/theme see their older album "Beneath The Medicine Tree")
Recommended Tracks:
- Don't Slow Down
- Love Is A Fast Song
- Pin Your Wings
- Kite
- No One Really Wins
Similar Artists:
- Mae
- Waking Ashland
- Coldplay
- Gin Blossoms
- Acceptance

Para sa mga fans ng OPM saka EMO,
Artist:Typecast
Album:The Infatutaion Is Always There
Pros
- A great catch for an EMO fan.
- If you like the band "Dashboard Confessionals", this band would be its pinoy counterpart.
- If you like pinoy bands who sound like foreign bands, this band is a great example.
Cons
Not suitable for persons who only listens and appreciates songs that are promoted in radios. Ibig sabihin kung ikaw yun tipong taong nagugustuhan lang ang kanta pag ni-release na sa airwaves, inde pu-pwede sa inyo ganitong mga kanta.

Raining Blood - Slayer
Pros:
IMO the definitive Thrash album
Dave Lombardo's drumming
Cons:
Repititive
A very short album
Ashes of the Wake - Lamb of God
Pros:
Increased technicality over LoG's other album
The drumming again, :)
Laid to Rest, hehehe
Cons:
Same chugga-chugga sound

dami, pero yung importante muna, at yung mga hindi pa obvious i guess...
OK COMPUTER by Radiohead
-hailed as the best album released last century, experimental album by Radiohead that earned them critical and artistic success
BINAURAL by Pearl Jam
-an underappreciated album by porbably the best rock act in the 90's
THE BEEKEPER by Tori Amos
-another beautiful work from this singer songwriter, although medyo nagiging "pop" na yung sound niya

ito para sakin:
1. Reverie Sound Revue - Reverie Sound Revue (www.myspace.com/reveriesoundrevue)
the best pop-rock group ever. kung gusto nyo ang pre-angry-rock na The Cardigans magugustuhan nyo to!
AGAD!!!
3. The Strokes - Is this it? at Room on Fire
old-school rock sound. astig. (*** bago nila edgy kaya di na-a-appreciate ng lahat) (oo nga pala pupunta ako sa The Strokes na concert!!! heh!)
4. Never Ending White Lights - Never Ending White Lights
kakaiba- *** single na kasama si Dallas Green (The Grace) enough na para bilhin ang album
5. City and Colour - Sometimes
Solo project ni Dallas Green. alterna-acoustic goodness from a punk-metal vocalist!!! astig.

Grace by the late and the great Jeff Buckley
PROS
- very strong lyrically; most of the songs have powerful themes (Eternal Life and Dream Brother, for example) and are filled with wonderful poetic lines
- it has an extremely personal feel to it, maybe because it's an extremely personal album
- Jeff's voice. oh my god, the voice. very strong, but can be very emotional without going over the top
- the songs romantic but are never cheesy or sappy
CONS
- not for everyone. it takes a few listens to fully appreciate the whole album
my fave tracks:
Grace
Hallelujah
Lover, You Should've Come Over <-- super fave ko
songs i'm not too crazy about but are still pretty good:
Corpus Christi Carol
Mojo Pin
highly recommended! if you can, try to get the Grace: Legacy Edition copy. it has an awesome new/old song - Forget Her - that was supposed to be on the original album but was scrapped at the last minute.

To all lovesick iPod / MP3 device owners...
I recently bought 2 MP3 compilations for all the lovesick-heartsick love fools out there...
Put a category in your devices and copy these compilations there and start sighing all summer long...
ALL FOR LOVE Compilation 1 (99 songs)
Album 1: Art of Letting Go vol. 1 - para sa mga basted, hiniwalayan, niloko, but definitely not recommended for the suicidal.
Album 2: Art of Letting Go vol. 2 - More of vol. 1
Album 3: Love Songs by Diane Warren - How do I live wout you, blue eyes blue, love will lead you back etc
Album 4: Bliss - para sa mga sinagot ng oo, newly in love, nagkabalikan etc.
Album 5: Acoustic Piano - para sa mga in love na mahilig sa piano music.
Album 6: Chant- Live Recordings 1989-1997 - as titled
ALL FOR LOVE Compilation 2 (106 songs)
Album 1: 89.1 Dreamsounds vol. 1 - to the fans of this weekend midnight show ; RNB galore!
Album 2: 89.1 Dreamsounds vol. 2 - more of vol.1
Album 3: Love Moves - para sa mga bading na in love
Album 4: Love Diary - more pure unadulterated love songs
Album 5: 24K Memories - 80's 99.5 RT classics
Album 6: Kiss the Day Goodbye - oldies but goodies
205 songs of non stop love music. For those who love the feeling of being in love or totally forgot about it but want to bring it back.

let's relive the fun we had in the Do You Have The Same Taste In Music?, The Appreciation/Asaran Tayo Thread and Artist Connection days....
... from that idea, Similar Artists pages in the net and Amazon's Listmania ...
i came up with an album recommendation thread in a fun way ....
... in order for us not to be stuck in the same genre/style/type of music you can also use other reasoning like these examples ....
Examples:
1st pexer:
O - Damien Rice
2nd pexer:
if you're looking for another album released in 2003 i also recommend Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast
3rd pexer: (it can also be from the same artist)
i also recommend Idlewild Sountrack
4th pexer:
you like soundtracks, i also recommend Garden State Soundtrack.
5th pexer:
you like indie, i also recommend Iron and Wine's Our Endless Numbered Days.
etchetera etchetera
Remember that this is an ALBUM recommendation thread, pick the ones that you really think are good albums. And also be reminded that this is *again* a recommendation thread, so don't question other's taste of music.
you can also state whether it's highly recommended or not in your opinion.
Any further explanations and discussions is welcome.

Psst, don't mention torrent sites or encourage piracy ;)
Neutral Milk is the first band you'll hear about when you venture into indie followed by Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Belle & Sebastian and ugh, Sufjan Stevens.
Some bands you might like:
Broken Social Scene - also check out the bands of their respective members (i.e. Stars, Feist, Metric, Apostle of Hustle - in that order)
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin - Weezer-sounding lo-fi.
Headlights - Female-fronted indie pop... guitar-driven with varying song structures, it's pretty good.
Death From Above 1979 - Drum and bass. Literally. Speaking of DFA...
CSS - Brazilian electro clash.
Los Campesinos! - they only have a 4-track LP but it gives you a flavor of what to expect when their debut album comes out next year.
Kate Nash - Regina Spektor with explicit lyrics and a cockney accent.
Also if you have Winamp/foobar2000, I recommend the goon-operated, inter-web radio station GBS.fm (http://www.gbsfm.info) -- registered users (goons only though) get to add songs on the rotation so it's as diverse as you can get. I added Wolfgang and UDD there and the response was fairly good, 3.8/5 average on both :D

Got this idea from SA's NMD. It's basically a recommendation/suggestion chain - User A asks which band/s sound like Band X and User B/C/D/E names Band Y/Z. Or User A just got into progressive rock - are there any other bands from that genre he should listen to that's not Pink Floyd or Rush? Which album should I start with when listening to Paris Hilton - the technical-era releases or her bubblegum pop efforts? Or I'm trying to give Slapshock a try - is there a song/album that doesn't have phlegm shouting? Answer: Not likely! And so on.

what about acid jazz music or electronica?
Straying away from the usuals, try the James Taylor Quartet, Jazzanova (saw them in Manila yeeears ago, amazing stuff!), and US3. And like US3, I'm not sure if people categorize Digable Planets as acid jazz (more like acid hip hop prolly), but I like 'em.
For electronica stuff, if you liked Bjork, maybe you'll like Emiliana Torrini's Love In The Time Of Science. How about Goldfrapp or Morcheeba or Leftfield or Thievery Corporation? A little extreme but IDM is a particular branch of electronica that I love: Aphex Twin, The Orb, Plastikman (a.k.a. Richie Hawtin, he also DJed in Manila yeeears ago, fantastic guy)... *okay* on Zero 7, btw.
I might try to go jazz. Maybe some Miles Davis, John Coltrane or Ella Fitzgerald. Astrud Gilberto for some bossa nova. lol
How about a combination of bossa nova and electronica: Bebel Gilberto (Tanto Tempo)? And in case it's not your cup of tea, there's always Jobim and Getz. Jazz ain't complete jazz if there's no free jazz, Ornette!

This Nujabes sounds interesting. I'd say it's Instrumental Hip Hop or Jazz Rap if it's anything...
As for jazz.... since you've mentioned Davis & Coltrane, there's also Charles Mingus to check out - and I prefer him over both Davis & Coltrane, actually. You must also try out:
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats (a MUST!)
Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus
Stan Getz & João Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto (standard bossa/jazz record)
Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
Bill Evans - Waltz for Debby and Sunday at the Village Vanguard

Old english lovage alcoholic cordial
Savour the old english cordial originally distilled
From devon herbs and spices
Using the secret recipe handed down through generations
And still one of devon's most popular imbibes
Traditionally drunk two parts lovage to one part brandy
As a soothing winter warmer, but if you want something a little more explicit
We recommend two parts Hennessy to one part lovage
Enjoy, baby

The Weepies -if you're into folk music, they are the best duo right now for me. Sort of Fleetwood Mac-ish but more mellow and I find Deb Talan's voice to be amazing and soothing.
Kings Of Leon - not just Only By The Night, check out their earlier albums especially Aha Shake Heartbreak. For me, Caleb Followill is the best rock singer today.
The Killers - of course, Hot Fuss is a landmark album but every album is great, honestly.
Eric Hutchinson - Mayer/Mraz type of guy, but in my book he is better than Mayer and Mraz combined. His songwriting has the simplicity of Mayer and the quirkiness of Mraz.. and he has a great voice too. Sounds Like This is a perfect album with no dead tracks.
Frank Turner - gifted songwriter, his lyrics are amazing and everyone should listen to his albums. His work is a departure from what he did with Million Dead, folk/rock suits him best.
Patty Griffin - lots of her songs have been covered by more popular artists like Martina McBride, Dixie Chicks and Kelly Clarkson. One of the best lyricists ever in my book- her songs are almost always sad though, senti but not corny.
VV Brown - if you're into Lady GaGa, Santogold type of artists, I think you'll like her. She has her own sort of genre, kind of electronic pop mixed with doo wop. It's really interesting, her album Travelling Like The Light is sick...in a good way.
