MIT jrs back after ‘vacation’
After three years of absence, the Mapua Red Robins will be back when the 84th Season of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) unfurls on June 28 at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Red Robins who produced the likes of Rudolf Kutch, Johnny Revilla, Billy Abarrientos, Ruben dela Rosa, Gherome Ejercito, Ogie Gumatay, Estong Ballesteros and Mark Clemence Telan in the pro league, took a leave of absence after the school’s administration abolished their high school department in 2004.
Since then, they were given a three-year moratorium by the NCAA board which lapsed this year coinciding with their turn to host the 84th season hostilities.
"We decided to form our high school team because if not, we will not be allowed to participate in the seniors which will eventually jeopardize our hosting. That was the condition given to us by the policy board and we have to abide it," explained Mapua Athletic Director and incoming NCAA Management Committee Chairman Ding Lozano.
Lozano said that their players will come from their sister science high school, the Mapua Malayan High School of Science which is the first ever private science high school in the country.
Tapped to form and handle the squad are former Mapua Cardinals Randy Alcantara and Chito Victolero.
Alcantara, a member of the Cardinals team who won the seniors basketball title in 1990 under Coach Joel Banal and Victolero, who served as assistant to Coach Koy Banal when the San Beda Red Lions capture the first of their backto-back championship title in 2006 started to form the team two months ago through a series of tryouts.
"Medyo maliliit ang mga players namin at puro mga bata kasi hanggang 3rd year pa lang meron ang MMHSS. But we’re trying to form a competitive team in time for the NCAA," said Lozano’s deputy Cralito Geronimo.
The last time, the Red Robins won the NCAA crown was in 2000 under Coach Horacio Lim. That was their 18th overall since 1941.
Now that they’re back, they are expected to go all out to regain their lost glory.
