I don’t think that Letran will be as dangerous this year as last year. The absence of a big man inside will be a big disadvantage against a Sam Ekwe, Ogie Menor, Pong Escobal and Borgie Hermida powered San Beda Red Lions.

This year they will be missing the service of Faundo because of academic reason, anyway, even with Faundo, Letran did not really pose as a serious threat. My basis for this is as follows:

Date San Beda –Letran Matchup
9/26/07 – 76-64 San Beda won by 12 points in a game that virtually ended by half time
9/19/07 - 76-68 San Beda won by 8 points
8/31/07 – 87-84 San Beda won by 3 points, in a game wherein San Beda played without their team captain Aljamal, after San Beda decided not to field him.
7/25/07 70-69 Letran defeated San Beda by just a point in a controversial game wherein Pong Escobal’s Trey was counted as a two. Had that basket been counted as 3 the game would have gone to over time.
In 2006 when Letran was supposed to be a very strong team with two stars in its roster, Bautista and Aban.. In fact arguably this Letran Team was better than its 2007 and 2008 Team.
7/8/06 – 57-49 San Beda defeated Letran by 8 points.
9/6/06 – 54-44 San Beda defeated Letran by 10 pts.

In the last two years wherein these two teams met the games were not even close. San Beda dominated Letran and to compound Letrans woes this year they were even beaten by Benilde at the Filoil. So based on this, I assume that if San Beda stays focus it cannot be beaten by Letran.

My prediction in particular order plus the rest of the teams:

1. San Beda - definitely a contender for a three-peat with Ekwe dominating the boards and Ogie Menor doing defense and offensive spurts for the Lions. A good program and a good system works wonders.

2. San Sebastian - the Stags have proven that they can match up with San Beda and that they can win so long as Najorda can deliver the clutch shots and their big men containing Ekwe.

3. Jose Rizal - with the acquisition of a foreign player in their fold, the Bombers can simply dominate other teams given the right momentum and scoring consistency.

4. Letran - San Sebastian may overtake the Knights through their big men but don't count out Jazul and company to give the Stags a run for second place. JRU may also have to watch out if they want to fight tooth and nail with the Knights since Louie Alas employs great defense but the offense needs more tweaking given the absence of the veterans.


Final Four bottom:

5. Mapua - MVP Dela Peña has proven that he is no pushover when it comes to delivering his team to the final four and with other role players in the line-up of the Cardinals, expect them to dominate the other teams. Coach Isaac's philosophy has given them an objective view of what they can do as a team.

6. St. Benilde - We just might see a revitalized Blazers this season but they need to improve some more in order to reach the final four. They have to be consistent in scoring and defense in order for them to peak in time for the semis. Winning games is a must for this team.

7. PCU - the absence of Jason Castro may be felt this season but they would still fight for their dignity to regain their standing and take a leave of absence after this season.

8. UPHDS - The Korean connection may still deliver blows this season and that they can score if given the opportunity to get decent shots beyond the arc. We can expect them to give their best in every game just to make a statement like PCU.

Well based on the scouting reports. Coach Gee loves to mix up defenses. The man to man going to zone switch and zone or man trap. Now the important thing here is how to sustain the trap. We all know that trapping brings out all of energy in the players. Having a good and long off season with Coach Gee means they know the system well. It is now on the matter execution that we will be waiting this NCAA season.

this logic is based on beda getting stronger. Definitely last year was a stronger team than the 06 team since the team was virtually intact with the experience of playing together especially the starters. One comment on last year's team however was how Lim relied too much on the starters instead of preparing the bench (by giving them playing time) for the playing time they will get this year. It really depends on how significant the loss of their captain, Aljamal is for this team. Perhaps not very, given the trashing of Mapua, a supposed contender. But then again that was one game. So really it depends on one's answer to this question: Is San Beda stronger this year than last year? or than the 06 team?

I think Benilde is for real. Letran lost to Benilde in their game in Filoil this summer. Also don't count out the Altas. The Baste upset is big.

I'm rooting for Letran but these 2 teams should not be taken for granted.

Letran lost because they played without their other players who were in the PBL. CSB is still trying to regain its deadly form but don't let that victory fool you for one second. Their victory against the Bombers was no fluke either and the Blazers lost to the Bombers in Fil-Oil too. Credit that to Coach Alas' system. When all players are assembled between the Knights and the Blazers, that's the time we will see who's system is better in terms of defense. But as for now, I see an impending Knights victory. ;)
