I was watching Hardball last night on ANC, and they had a story on the 2008 Nike Summer League. I didnt have an idea that this preseason tournament had already started since last weekend. Games are played in the FEU gym daw. All NCAA/UAAP teams daw would be participating. Though still, I cannot find more info and updates about this league. Care to shed some light? Anyone?:bop:

NCAA champion San Beda College brought down University of Perpetual Help Dalta System, 75-68, to launch its title campaign, even as Lyceum of the Philippines pulled the rug from under San Sebastian College, 75-68, for its second straight win in the 2008 Nike Summer League basketball tournament at the FEU gym in Morayta, Manila.

The Red Lions, who played minus main man Sam Ekwe, drew enough firepower from Bam Gamalinda, Garvo Lanete and Jerome Villanueva to beat the Altas and give coach Frankie Lim his first victory in the prestigious tournament sponsored by Nike.

Gamalinda scattered 16 points, Laneta added 15 points and Villanueva contributed 12 points for the Red Lions.

Rookie center Jake Pascual finished with 10 points for the Mendiola-based school.

Gibson Kong paced the Altas (1-1) with 26 points, followed by Ronald Reyes with 14 points.

The day, however, belonged to Lyceum, which is hoping to become a new member of the NCAA.

Handled by coach Bonnie Tan, the Pirates went to prized recruit Chris Aqualafull and junior forward Victor Medina Jr. to beat the Stags.

Aqualafull, a 6-8 center from Republic of Ghana who was discovered by Lyceum while playing for Wang’s Ballclub in the MBL, fired 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Pirates.

Medina, a 6-0 forward from Laguna, added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Arnel Calimag contributed 10 points for Lyceum.

Froilan Saquillo led the Stags with 15 points, followed by Jim Bruce Viray with 12 and Dave Najorda with 10 points.

In the other Group B match, Philippine Maritime Institute demolished De la Salle-Lipa, 86-56, for its first win in two matches.

Julius De Guzman fired 19 points, Jye-O Ressurection contributed 12 points and Aldrin Funa added 10 points for the Admirals.

La Salle-Lipa was paced by Jhon Mar Mendoza with 13 points, followed by Yves Abila and Dennis Magtibay with 10 points each.

The semifinal round of the annual tournament will be telecast over Studio 23 courtesy of ABS CBN Sports.

A total of 28 teams from various collegiate leagues in the country are seeing action in the annual tournament also supported by Gatorade, Domino’s Pizza and Goldilocks.

Tannie Gonzalez is the tournament commissioner.

Sana idagdag nalang, together with EAC and SFAC. Malalakas naman sports programs nila and may napatunayan na. MAs masaya yun. 12 teams na. Wag nalang sana magtanggal, put PCU under probation to prevent these things from happening again and all would be good. *okay*

Update April 22,2008

Ateneo smothers NU

ATENEO de Manila showed too much class in beating National University, 53-41, even as Letran made it two in a row with a 67-53 triumph over RP Youth in Group D in the 2008 Nike Summer League basketball tournament at the FEU gym in Morayta, Manila.

The Blue Eagles relied on sophomore guard Eric Salamat and Nonoy Baclao to beat the Bulldogs, which dropped to 1-1.

Salamat fired 14 points while Baclao, a 6-5 recruit from Bacolod City, added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Edwin Asoro paced the Bulldogs with 10 points.

The Knight of multi-titled coach Louie Alas played superbly against RP Youth, getting balanced scoring from veteran forward Rey Guevarra, Anjoe Latonio, Kojak Melegrito, Reymar Gutilban and Junjun Alas also played well for Letran.

Gabriel Banal led RP Youth team with 11 points, followed by Kyle Pascual and Mark de Guzman with 10 points each.

In another Group D match, Trinity University of Asia edged Philippine Womens University, 86-84, for its first win in two outings.

Mark Medrana scattered 31 points for the Rad Pasco-mentored Broncos. Lennard Castello added 20 points and Kenneth Emata had 14 points.

Richard Sauce carried the fight for the Patriots with a game-high 34 points, followed by Gemar Isorena with 14.

In Group C, College of St. Benilde debuted with a 69-59 win over Polytechnic University of the Philippines while Jose Rizal University downed Lyceum-Calamba, 77-65.

Chuck Dalanon scored 17 points for the Blazers , followed by Jeff Morial with 13, Anjelo Monteclaro with 12 and Gary Sevilla with 10.

Gener Porio and Neomar Infante scored 15 points apiece for PUP, which dropped to 0-2.

The Bombers rode on the 18-point production of 6-5 sophomore center John Allen Montemayor in beating Lyceum-Calamba. Nathaniel Matute and Ildefonso Bulangis added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Orly Mabait and Ivan Limpahan finished with 17 points each for Lyceum-Calamba.

In juniors division, Dela Salle-Zobel defeated University of Santo Thomas, 73-55, for its first win in two matches.

Gwyne Capacio, Nico Elorde and Luigi Dela Paz combined for 37 points for the Junior Archers.

Capacio and Elorde fired 13 points apiece while Dela Paz added 10 points.

Storm Riva led the Tiger Cubs with 13 points, followed by Eduardo Aytona Jr. with 12 and Jezreel Jimenez with 11 points.

Jose Rizal nips Benilde
by Jonas Terrado

A strong second half performance put Jose Rizal University out of the tight start to secure a 68-60 nipping of fellow NCAA member College of Saint Benilde in the only scheduled morning game of the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors divisions at the FEU gym in Manila last May 13.

The Heavy Bombers put a stifling defense on the Blazers to lead by double-figures for almost the whole duration of the second half en route to the win and improved their standing to a 3-3 win-loss card.

JRU, however, is in fourth place and appears to be out of contention for a slot in the quarterfinals with unbeaten Group C leaders FEU, University of the East, and the third-place Blazers, who dropped to a 3-2 mark, in front.

An 8-0 run in the last 2:30 of the second quarter gave the Mandaluyong-based squad the lead at halftime, 33-28, capped off by a running fade away shot by Ildefonso Bulangis with 13 ticks left.

In the middle portion of the third, John Wilson hit five points while Raycon Kabigting put up seven markers, including a triple that made it a 50-35 spread with 1:34 in the said period for their biggest margin of the day.

It was the frontline of James Sena and Jayson Nocom who led the Heavy Bombers. Sena recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while Nocom contributed a double-double by scoring 10 and grabbing 10 boards on 5-for-6 shooting as both schooled CSB in the paint with their inside presence.

"We have been struggling lately because most of our players are in the PBL at ngayon lang naging buo 'yung team," quoted JRU head coach Ariel Vanguardia. "Hopefully, ngayon mag-gel yung mga veterans at mga bagong players sa team."

The Blazers matched up well with the Heavy Bombers after a 6-0 start while lanky Archimedes David fired three shots from the three-point range as the Taft-based team nailed five triples in the first half.

But Saint Benilde, who was mentored by assistant Richard del Rosario in absence of head coach Gee Abanilla, made just two shots from beyond the arc since and was held to just 13 points in the third canto to trail 54-41.

"We gave them (CSB) a lot of outside shots in the first half," Vanguardia remarked. "Ginawa namin sa second half, dinikitan namin yung mga shooters nila at nacontain naman sila."

David topscored for the black and green squad with 15 points and eight rebounds while Garri Sevilla added 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Point guard Anjelo Monteclaro put in nine points along with six assists in a reserve role.

The closest effort for the Blazers to come back was at 37-33 as Sevilla hit a three with 7:56 to go only for them to score just two points the next six minutes to fall behind by a large margin in the third quarter.

"Benilde is a rebuilding team but they are also dangerous, we cannot take them lightly," said Vanguardia, who had seven markers from K abigting with Wilson adding six markers alongside Maui Pradas, who bankrolled two threes in the game.

The Heavy Bombers wrapped up their campaign on Friday against Polytechnic University of the Philippines while Benilde meets University of the Philippines in the curtain raiser on the same day.

UP turns back Benilde
by Jonas Terrado

University of the Philippines used a devastating second half outburst in defeating skidding College of Saint Benilde, 77-57, in the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors division at the FEU gym last May 16.

The Fighting Maroons trailed by double-digits and 29-25 at the start of the second half but outscored the Blazers, 21-4, in the first five minutes of the third period to grab a commanding 46-33 advantage with Mike Silungan leading the charge.

Silungan scored 14 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 24 points.

"We were actually down by about 14 points in the second quarter and we made a good run towards the end of the second quarter before we took control of the second half," said UP head coach Aboy Castro, whose team tied the CSB at fourth place in Group D at a 3-3 card.

"I think we played more energy in the second half and our defense played well," Castro added.

Silungan, who carries a dual citizenship which would require him to sit for two years of UAAP residency, shot 4-for-9 from the three-point distance while tallying six rebounds and four steals in the win.

"He has been a big help thus far, too bad we have to wait for two years because of the UAAP ruling," Castro said of his rookie addition.

A 10-7 advantage by Saint Benilde cut the margin to 53-45 with 9:33 at the start of the final canto off a layup by William Jhonston but Silungan came up with a triple and an easy layup off a steal to send the lead back to 13 points, 58-45.

UP also got help from PBL standouts Magi Sison and Paul Sorongon. The lanky Sison recorded eight points and eight rebounds while Sorongon added nine points and four steals.

No one from CSB scored in double-figures with Jacob Manlapaz putting in nine while Anjelo Montecastro and Garri Sevilla each scoring eight.

The Diliman-based cagers' last game will be against Calamba-based Lyceum Institute of Technology on May 28. Despite their current mark, it looks like both UP and CSB are virtually out of contention depending on how the 3-0 University of the East fares in the next four games.

Saint Benilde will meet UE on May 20 in a crucial matchup.

Meanwhile, Jose Rizal University dismantled Polytechnic University of the Philippines, 93-58, behind 22 points and six threes from Maui Pradas. The Heavy Bombers finished their NSL stint with a decent 4-3 card, winning their last two games.

On the other hand, Far Eastern University Team B crushed Nokia-National Basketball Training Center in an exhibition match, 72-46.

Red Warriors survives scare to enter semis
by Jonas Terrado

University of the East blew a 24-point third quarter lead but still held on to a pulsating 91-87 victory over reigning two-time NCAA champion San Beda College in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors division at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila last June 5.

The Red Warriors even trailed by three, 87-84, after blowing a big lead but Pari Llagas scored five of the team’s seven unanswered points to stole the game away from the comeback-hungry Red Lions side.

Llagas sank UE’s go-ahead basket on a putback off a miss by Elmer Espiritu for a one-point spread, 88-87, with 12.4 seconds. On the next play, Sam Ekwe was called for a backcourt violation after stepping on the line at midcourt off an inbound pass.

Llagas then hit one of two charities for a three-point lead but San Beda whisked another opportunity to send the game into overtime or hit a go-ahead triple after a turnover with 8.3 ticks left. James Martinez hit both foul shots a second later to seal the game.

With the victory, the Dindo Pumaren-mentored squad advanced to the semifinals next week, June 11, at the Philsports Arena against the winner of the match between Far Eastern University and Lyceum of the Philippines University.

The Tamaraws and the surprising Pirates meet this Sunday in a scheduled 2pm tussle, also at Rizal Memorial.

Llagas led the Recto-based cagers with 20 points and 12 rebounds on 7-for-9 from the floor while Martinez buried five triples for 17 points in the win. Espiritu and Marcy Arellano made 16 and 13 points, respectively.

UE dominated the third quarter by outscoring San Beda, 28-6, in a stretch of eight minutes to grab a commanding 74-50 advantage as Llagas, Martinez, and Arellano led the scoring spree.

But Garvo Lanete took command of a huge rally by the Red Lions, scoring nine points to pull within a point, 78-77, with 4:47 remaining only for Martinez to answer back with a triple for a four-point edge.

Later on, Lanete drained four quick points, including a runner for a go-ahead lead, 85-84, with 1:39 remaining. 20 seconds later, Pong Escobal stripped Raffy Reyes to score an easy layup for a three-point advantage.

Lanete topscored for the Mendiola dribblers with 20 points, 13 in the final canto, while hitting 7-of-11 shots, to go along with five assists. On the other hand, Bam Gamalinda nailed 15 points and eight boards with Ekwe managing to collect 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Meanwhile, defending UAAP and NSL titlist De La Salle University dumped unheralded FEATI University, 89-67, to advance to the next round.

The Green Archers were threatened late in the third quarter, as the Seahawks slashed DLSU’s lead to just three, 55-52, as Marvin Agacer and Erickson Gatchalian conspired on a 14-7 spurt.

La Salle, though, closed the period with six consecutive points, highlighted by a three-point basket by Ferdinand to increase the margin to nine.

From there, Rico Maierhofer and PJ Barua took over as the Taft-based quintet sent the lead up to double digits for the remaider of the final period to cap off with the lopsided win.

Barua led the victors with 18 points, Hyram Bagatsing made 15 markers, while Maierhofer scored 14 and corralled 10 boards, as DLSU will meet either fierce rival Ateneo de Manila University or Mapua Institute of Technology in next week’s final four.

The Blue Eagles and the Cardinals duel aims to advance in the semis when they clash on Sunday at 4pm, following the FEU-LPU duel.

Agacer led the Colleges and Universities Sports Association member with 20 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the field. Gatchalian scored 16 and Christopher Relova added 11 markers in a losing cause.

Judging from how San Sebastian College-Recoletos Staglets played in the finals of the 2008 Nike Summer League, they can still dominate the coming National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball season.

The Staglets won in lopsided fashion outplaying fellow NCAA member La Salle-Greenhills, 94-79, Friday to win their second straight title in the NSL at the Philsports Arena.

San Sebastian thwarted a slow start with excellent pressure defense finishing the first quarter with a 22-13 lead after the Greenies scored the first four points en route to an early 8-5 lead.

"Medyo gigil lang yung mga bata noong umpisa pero after nila naka-adjust sa depensa, tuluy-tuloy na sila," said San Sebastian coach Raymond Valenzona.

"I told the boys we can't get our offense going until we establish our defense," added Valenzona.

Almond Vosotros finished with 14 points to cap off his tournament after winning the Most Valuable Player honors.

Big man Arvie Bringas had a game-high 27 points and 16 rebounds while wily guard Joseph Gusi had 17 points for the Staglets. Marco Cam also had 12 points and nine rebounds, who will be vying for their fourth straight title in the coming 84th season of the NCAA.

"We are ready for the NCAA," said Valenzona.

The Staglets were never threatened in the game after their slow start. Gusi brought the lead to 24 points--the highest of the game--on a lay-up to give the Staglets a 65-41 lead in the third.

The Staglets were also motivated after they lost to the Greenies in the finals in the other preseason tournament weeks back.

"We prepared for a week for this game. Hindi kami puwede matalo ng dalawang beses sa kanila," said Valenzona.

Mikee Reyes finished with 22 points while Marvin Maraiois had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Greenies.

La Salle-Greenhills came to within 11 points, 86-75, with only 1:43 left, but time just was not on its side for this one.

Vosotros was also included in the juniors Mythical Five along with Mikee Reyes, Martin Reyes, Gusi, and Bringas.

Adamson University, meanwhile, secured the women's title beating defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 73-61.

The Lady Falcons scored back-to-back baskets to end the first half ahead, 36-33. They continued to silent the Tigresses' offense to start the third clustering six straight points to take a 42-33 lead.

"This is a team effort. Ito ang team na walang star player pero maganda ang linalaro as a team," said Adamson coach Emelia Vega.

MVP Kat Sandel tallied 15 points to complement Daphnie Tecson's 17 markers for the Lady Falcons, who avenged their loss to the Tigresses--their lone defeat--during the group stage.

More importantly, UST's Marichu Bacaro was neutralize by the Lady Falcons' defense. She scored 11 points but shot only three-of-15 from the field.

"Talagang focus namin sa depensa si Bacaro. Kahit iba na ang umiskor, basta mapigilan namin siya," Vega added.

Analyn Almazan scored 11 points and grabbed 20 rebounds while Anna Buendia had 11 points for the Lady Falcons.

Nikki Leonardo led the Tigresses with 13 points as teammate Rem Buenacosa chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds.

In the women's battle-for-third, De La Salle beat Philippine College of Criminology, 63-52.

Members of the women's Mythical Five were Sandel, Bacaro, Buenacosa, Almazan, and Katrina Garcia of PCCR.
