MANILA, Philippines--Defending champion La Salle and runner-up San Beda take on separate foes at the start of the 2nd Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup Sunday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

After the 1 p.m. opening ceremony, the NCAA champion San Beda Red Lions debut against Collegiate Champions League titlist Ateneo Blue Eagles at 2 p.m.

The clash between UAAP titleholder Archers and the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers get going at 4 p.m.

A cheerdance contest and brass-band performance highlight the kickoff rites.

The rest of the games in the two-month long event will be held at The Arena in San Juan.

Other teams seeing action are UAAP runner-up University of the East, Santo Tomas, Adamson, Far Eastern, National U, Mapua, Letran, St. Benilde, Perpetual Help and San Sebastian.

The games will be aired over BTV on Destiny Cable Channel 34 and IBC 13.

It is not right to say that we have not beaten the blue eagles. Naalala ko nuong opening ng isang tournament way back in 2006, after SBC won the NCAA championship, the RL won over them.

The blue eagles is a team. IF they win, they will win as a team with Black as their court general and Tiu as their main gunner, not because of anybody in particular.

I am sorry but I disagree na ganyan lahat ang mga taga UAAP. Hindi naman lahat. My brother is a full blooded Atenean and my sister graduated from Ateneo. Another sister from UP. I have uncles that studied at Ateneo and my parents are from UST. They don't look down on me and my cousins because we are Bedans. I guess yung ganyan attitude is more of upbringing and family background. Our school can only teach us so much, pero pag uwi natin ang nananaig pa din ay ang impluwensya ng mga kaibigan at mga kapamilya.

salva was a not a factor, no doubt. he's getting lost in the ateneo offense. buenafe, on the other hand, is different. it looks like coach is trying to hide someone from the public. from the short time he was in, i noticed that he knows how to move in the offense, a very good sign.

i think you watched a different game. correct me if i'm wrong, but of all the rookies of ateneo, only salva played significant minutes and was a not a factor. buenafe was in about 5-6 minutes give or take two to three. among all the rookies, in the very little time he was fielded in, he seems to be the one that has been accustomed to the offense and defense of ateneo. chua, as the saying goes, may daga sa dibdib (at mukhang mejo marami pa :lol: ). same goes with salva.

Salva was really not a factor. as i have said, looking at how he played, the guy shows a lot of potential but still seems to get lost in the offensive set of ateneo. in fairness, once he gets on the same page with the team, he'll be a force to reckon with.

Actually some Bedans are just fired up with the win against Ateneo...

Maybe because there are many people from UAAP schools who keep on saying that NCAA teams can't win over the top UAAP teams...

Good game by San Beda yesterday. I was really amazed by Ekwe's turnaround jumpers and jump hooks. If he extends his range up to 20 feet out, he'll be more of a force to reckon with and no one in the college leagues will be able to stop him.

Kudos also to Ogie Menor and Pong Escobal. Escobal showed up at just the right time. Taganas was also surprising from outside. And the RL were simply killing us off the offensive boards.

After their loss to Ateneo earlier this summer, they worked on stopping Ateneo's outside shooters. The coaching staff learned their lessons well. The perimeter defense was better overall and there were no easy baskets.

As for Ateneo, they could've used a trio of Tiu, Austria, and Salamat to break the press. It was painful to see Kirk Long lose the ball to the sidelines just like Paul Tan-Chi used to do against DLSU. Austria, for all his baby fat, is a better press-breaker. Salamat's becoming a better fastbreak finisher and that in-your-face steal off Borgie Hermida was a thing of beauty.

JR Taganas worked on his outside shot during the lull in the College basketball season. Too bad he still hasn't been given the green light to attempt three pointers during actual games. He has been working hard during practice in launching those 3pt shots, apparently he's patterning his game after another Red Lion great, Chito Loyzaga.

I guess the choking press did wonders for San Beda, it really complemented their running game plus a better rotation being applied by the coaching staff this time kaya most of the time they have fresh legs. Unlike in their previous game in the CCL wherein coach Franky Lim would only use around 6-7 players, talagang lupaypay sa end game mga key players. Na caught unaware Ateneo I think pero babawi yan. I have seen how devastating this team during the last CCL, talagang malakas, kaya nga sila nag champion without really working out a sweat sa 2007 CCL eh

Bedans aren't trained to give or even think of an excuse if they fail, but Ateneans are ver well trained by Jesuits to think that they can not fail, and if they do, they give excuses. I'm from Ateneo. I chose to go there for college. I have a lot of friends from other schools as well.

With all those years of having friends from other schools, isa lang ang masasabi ko: All of them have their bad eggs, just as they all have their share of good people. And that includes people who don't offer excuses for failure, athletic or otherwise.

It's obvious that you haven't hung around Ateneans enough to get to know them better. And you haven't read my post above. I didn't give any excuses. Hindi sa papansin ako, pero kung ayaw mong ma-generalize, HUWAG kang mang-generalize. More often, the label tells more about the labeller than the labelled.

Actually, I'm not from San Beda. Does that place me in your so-called 89.9% majority? I don't think so. And I don't have anything against your school. It's people like you, regardless of the school you came from, that I have issues with.

Baby Shaq actually reminds me of Bong Hawkins. Walang vertical leap, pero halimaw sa box-out. Taganas has a better-looking shot, though.

We lost to a better team overall and we should dwell on how to improve especially with all the hype we got from the recruits we now have. Honestly we are running out of reasons so just go back to the drawing board and plan out the game with FEU.

Remember DLSU played a great game and even their rookies had decent games. Let's dwell on that idea and the time when we have to face them.

To the king eagle, you had a lot of open shots in the first half which could have helped but you missed those including 2 free throws in one trip to the line. Lesser TV guesting and more time on the court please....

Wala naman ako nakita. San Beda had a physical game last Sunday. Pumipito naman ang mga referees pag nakakita sila ng foul. Nawala ang inside game ng Ateneo. Their big men are tentative in their moves againts Ekwe inside the paint. Also, their outside shooting went sour in the 2nd half.

Except lang kay Baclao and Salamat who sometimes challenged the big men of San Beda.
