Buenafe dons Ateneo jersey in tune-up game

TUNE-UP games don’t necessarily attract as much attention compared to contests that matter. Last Wednesday’s Ateneo-Jose Rizal University tilt, however, was an eye-catcher.

The matchup, won by the Blue Eagles 77-71 at the Moro Lorenzo Sports Complex, featured one of the most sought-after high school prospects in recent memory in a Blue and White jersey. Reigning NCAA Juniors basketball Most Valuable Player Ryan Buenafe, along with two other prized recruits, suited up for the Katipunan-based squad in a practice game that could very well lay to rest all the debates about where the 6’1” stalwart is going to attend college.

Two other high school superstars, Chiang Kai Shek’s Justin Chua and San Beda’s Nico Salva, also took the floor against the Heavy Bombers. A third, Vince Burke of Faith Academy and a teammate of current Blue Eagle Kirk Long was on the Ateneo bench but did not play. A reliable source who witnessed the game said Buenafe looked a little out of shape compared to Salva, who “was more active and had better court sense [in that game].”

Three preseason tournaments, to be kicked off by the Filoil Flying V showdown at the Philsports Arena this Sunday, April 13, will ultimately determine where Buenafe and even Chua and Salva will end up this season. Buenafe’s exhibition stint with Ateneo, though, can be seen as a step closer to unlocking the mystery surrounding his collegiate destination. Over the past six months, he has been linked to his high school, San Sebastian, San Beda and even De La Salle.

Buenafe led the San Sebastian Staglets to a three-peat this past season, averaging 32.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists in his quintet’s two-game sweep of the Letran Squires. He also registered four triple-doubles in 12 appearances in his last playing year in the Juniors division.

I can't wait to see the looks on their faces once the college basketball season ends with the Red Lions winning their 3rd straight crown and the Ateneo team falling short again.

This is college basketball, amateur basketball, not professional basketball. So go figure out for yourselves what sort of package he got from the school in Katipunan.

Second, just because Bedans are in a position to say that we don't need so and so player and that they are not our loss and you aren't doesn't give you any right to take away some pompt and pageantry on our end. Buenafe is a welcome addition to any team. He was a man amongst boys at juniors basketball, but we will see how he will perform against young men. It's good for him that he was admitted at the best university in the country, hopefully he will stay there to graduate. There is really so much hype on this kid. Is he "the real deal"? We will soon find out.

AFAIK, it was Salva we were interested in getting because he's a cub. SBC is more interested in keeping its own. We are more keen on pUrsuing someone we know and who is familiar with our system.

hi im a bedan pero i think na di ata tama na tawagin sila salva or buenafe at kung sinu man na mercenary,.. guys if you were in the position sa sobrang dami ng offers malilito ka talaga.. it really hurts kung yung best players from h.s lilipay ng ibang school.. but reality we have to accept it kasi its their choice or baka may malaking reason kaya ganun... i know alot of good players from my batch na lumipat ng school pero di pumasok sa isip namin na ganun... give them the benefit of the doubt.. if you call them mercenary... parang tinawag nyo na dinmercenary sila ritualo, bravo, calagiou, mesina, paras, pumaren, magsanoc etc...

Hayaan nyo na si Buenafe, gusto nya siguro sa UAAP kasi kahit hindi mag champion, mas mataas yung pagasa na makuha sa draft kung papalarin, kasi ganon naman lagi, yung mga taga UAAP ang laging nauuna sa draft(PBA) kesa sa mga taga NCAA dba? I totally agree with you.All players,past and present who has been under coach Ato,morphs into a dedicated,passionate and selfless player.It is seldom that you see an Ato player who is cocky outside of basketball. sir hindi nga po ata siya nakapasa pero po sa ateneo, you can get in through reconsideration. this is done, i think, by submitting a letter to the OAA and they will evaluate the said case. hindi naman po dinaya, na reconsider lang. i believe the reconsideration process is stated in the website of ateneo :)
