Cathy is a comic strip focused on women's concerns. Named after her creator Cathy Guiswite, the strip has been a witty voice for women for more than twenty years. Cathy expresses women's whims and strengths with such a great sense of humor that she makes me laugh about weight problems, food issues, mother issues and commitment issues. My favorites include strips about the terror of shopping for bathing suits, the major temptation that is cookies and her legendary scream: "Ack!"

I like Cathy too! Hagurin ninyo ang mga Booksale kasi just last week, I was lucky enough to find "The Collected Cathy", a thick hard bound book compiling many of her best strips. And for only P120 too!

Don't bash me for this, but I really, really dislike this comic strip. It projects females as nothing but hare-brained creatures whose only concern in life are expanding waistlines and hips, men, food, and shopping. How insulting it is for my sex to be promoted this way--and by a female cartoonist at that.

I don't see Cathy like that, Doctor. :) I think it's very tongue-in-cheek. If ever, it is representative of a certain type of generation, the angsty female who cannot seem to get her life together. It isn't a generalization as much as it is a focus on a certain type of woman. And it must hit home because it wouldn't have been so successful if women weren't able to relate. Cathy's readers are still predominantly female.
To paraphrase a much-quoted saying, oftentimes the quality that we dislike so much in others is frequently what we dislike so much in ourselves.

Each to their own. Cathy is, in fact, the epitome of the female stereotype and that is one reason why she's so funny. Just like we can't blame Hagar the Horrible for being chauvinistic, we cannot blame Cathy for being stereotypical. Cathy expressed the frustration women felt about trying to adjust to social roles and technological advances society inadvertably imposed on them. These social roles and expectations are real. Cathy was a voice of frustration for many women. Reading about Cathy's reactions is cathartic, specially for women who do relate to her.

I'm familiar with this comic strip. The female with perennial men problems and who constantly fusses about getting fat (chocolate or whatever).
Sometimes it can be really funny showing these so-called female stereotypes. Sometimes it can just be really confusing.
Or is it because women are much more prone to understand Cathy?
