Hello people...

I was just wondering if anyone here is planning to go to the U.S. for graduate school, particularly for the sciences. Maybe this would be a good place where we could share notes, regarding perhaps the important quirks we must know before actually applying. (i.e. financial assistance, the right schools, GRE, and other stuff)

As for me, I am in my fourth year studying Physics in the Ateneo, and I will be finishing my Math degree next year. After that, I will seriously have to consider my options.

Anyone here as dreamy as I?

acolyte: do u have any choices as to what university do u wanna go to??

here's a few suggestions on universities with GREAT Science programs in order of preference

1. MIT
2. University of Chicago
3. University of California at Berkeley

I can't get in these 3 universities. hehe...I'm not intelligent enough.. so, these are just fantasies for me....

Hindi ko alam kung ano ang specialization mo kaya heto ang ma-co-contribute ko. Though, right now, sa Villanova and Penn State Universities ako for my masters. Wala dito yung university ko pero proud ako. (huwag lang maingay ha! heh-heh-heh). ---jake

wow, I didn't realize NYU ranks that high in every field... For a school that's not even an IVY League.. I wouldn't mind going there...

I'm actually eyeing Princeton, Caltech, Arizona, Rochester, Stanford, Chicago, and Harvard.

BTW, my planned area of specialization is Optics. This is why Arizona and Rochester would be up on my list despite their not-so-famous physics programs.

may Optical Physics sa MIT at kung anu-ano pang physics. Heto yung site just in case:

Hey thanks. But I already knew that. The problem is ...the MIT physics department accepts only applicants with no grade below B. Kaya disqualified na ako.

Besides, MIT, in my opinion, caters to the unhumanly DILIGENT types, so it somehow turns me off. Call me sourgraping. But really, some of the smartest people I've met and come to respect never really got all A's in school. This is not to question MIT's credentials. Pero try ko na lang siguro sa iba. Besides, in optics, marami pa talagang mas magaling sa kanila.

i too, am dreamily wishing of going to graduate school in the US. i'm taking up biology, and i'm in my second to the last year of by bs. i've been considering going to MS instead of Med, somewhere along the lines of microbiology or molecular biology...any suggestion of school? do you know any schools that are not SO expensive but reputable? or lahat talaga pareho tuition dito, kaso dollars ang currency? *sigh* it never hurt anyone to dream.

Bayaan mo na ang MIT. kung ayaw nila sa iyo, pasensiya sila. Sila rin ang mawawalan di ba? O sige, acolyte, just do your best, God will do the rest.

This is a great help to grad-school hunters.

2001 Graduate School Rankings
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/beyond/bcrank.htm

Remember, the best school may not be the right school for you. There is a number of variables that affect which school to pick -- cost, location, field of study, etc. MIT is a very, very good school.. but w/ almost US$30k/yr on tuition alone, it will never be my school of choice as long as I'm paying for my education. UCLA is ranked 20th in engineering (still a very, very good school), and tuition for california residents is only almost US$5k; for out-of-state residents almost US$15k.

Thanks man, but I've actually been to that site about a thousand times already. My friends actually tease me about it. Anyway, how about your plans?

acolyte: I used to live in Santa Monica, CA, so I had my eyes set to UCLA, and UC-Ivrine. I already had my documents from PH, recommendation letters, etc., etc. But I made some changes to my plans.. I proposed marriage to my then g/f. We got marriend last Oct.

Anyway, I moved to IL, and is now (again) preparing requirements for schools. I currently have my eyes focused on NorthWestern, UI-Chicago, and Illinois Inst. of Tech. (IIT). I would like to go to North Western but they have a diff. research focus than what I want to be in. I'm planning on starting 'round fall of this year.

Hopefully, I get to either UIC or IIT, so school would be close to where I live. Saka sana, we can stay with our plan, and not have kids yet -- my wife wouldn't want to very badly since she's still trying to finish her MBA :)

to acolyte: Physics major ka rin ba? Ako rin eh. I'm also planning to take my masters sa U.S. Pero, it will take me 3-4 years before I do that. I'm still in the 1st year.

Physics-Math double major. Quite proud to say i'm the only one in Ateneo with that track.

Anyway, I'm really happy that you have your sights set on graduate school. But then please do not commit the mistake of neglecting your academics if you intend to go to the u.s. Actually, naghahabol nga ako ngayon, kase 'di ko pinakialaman ang studies ko earlier in my college life. Honestly, saying this to a freshman makesme feel pretty old.

Please consider also Australia and Europe for gradaute school. Their standards are really just as high, and their application fees (including non-requirement of the GRE, approx. P25k) make them somehow better choices. The states though, should you be able to finance everything, is still the best (all things considered equal), especially in physics.

Ano nga ba ang plano mong specialty? Meron na nga ba? And btw, would you happen to be studyng in the Ateneo?

acolyte: I'm very fascinated with intelligent systems, and agents, information systems, and telecommunications. So I really would like to focus on networking, and information systems, with a mix of artifitial intelligence. It's a tall order but those are the things that make me tick. This is why I would prefer going to either North Western, or IIT since they have research funding for these areas, and their curricula, and schedule cater to parttime students. It's tough to get into North Western, but I'll give it a shot.

The tuition will be a ***** -- around US$600/unit in both IIT, and NorthWestern. My company will only shoulder up to 50% of the tuition.. So I will have to put in some personal money. My wife's company pays for her MBA, but the amount she can reimbuse depends on her grade for the term; 100% if no grad lower than B+.

cool. :D A Physics-Math major? YOU sir, are not human. Neptune and I are blockmates. :D We're still freshmen students here at DLSU and presently taking up Medical Physics- presently because we are still desperately trying to shift to Biology. The Math in MedPhy is enough to make my bones shrink. Nevertheless, I don't think you'd be able to empathize...hehe
Although..to be perfectly honest...a part of me doesn't want to leave MedPhy. It's the name man... I'm so impressed by it- bahala na kung mahirap..*sigh* Well... pero I just can't sacrifice it. The more I fail my math subjects, the longer I get stuck in college and the more humongous tuitions I pay!!!
Argh!!!

at least you're company still, reimbursed you 50%. kami wala. I'm taking my two masters at the same time. So far, my plan is to get a student loan kasi hindi ako papasa sa iskolarship

My specialty is in Information System with human touch.
