Ako, dehins ako taga-CSB pero sana maganda ang performance ng Blazers sa NC next season kasi gusto ko lahat ng NC teams, competitive. Lahat, pang-international standards. Walang whipping boys, walang natatambakan, lahat ng teams puro powerhouse. Lahat ng games, puro close fight or umaabot sa overtime.

“I don’t like foreign players on my team” – Gee Abanilla
by Josef Ramos
Wednesday, 5 March 2008 (391 Views, 14 Comments)

For a change, College of Saint Benilde (CSB) has hired a new head coach for the next basketball National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball this season and hopefully the move would bring them back to respectability.

Gee Abanilla, 41, an assistant of Red Bull mentor Yeng Guiao in the PBA, replaced Carlos Caloy Garcia two months ago as head coach of the Saint Benilde Blazers, who finished last in the team standings during the past two years.

And as an inboundpass.com exclusive, we were able to interview Abanilla knowing the fact that this is his first time to handle a team from a highly-respected and oldest collegiate league in the country.

INBOUNDPASS: Well this is your first time to handle a collegiate team, so how do you feel?

GEE ABANILLA: I’m very thankful and at the same time excited after hearing the management’s decision of hiring me as coach. Step by step, I’ll do everything to turn them competitive again. I’m happy also because the players are very cooperative in my first two months. They have a good working ethic.

INBOUNDPASS: What are the expectations of the management from you?

GA: I signed a two-year contract and I told them that I’ll do everything to improve the team. Final Four is definitely a good place to be, but during our meeting I said we should be realistic also depending on what we got right now.If we finish last in the past two seasons, I told them there’s nothing we can do but to move forward.

If we ended 10th place last season, why not ninth or eighth this time (laughs). Every team in the NCAA is competitive, so it is indeed very challenging on my part to coach them.

INBOUNDPASS: How far do you think can your team go next season?

GA: I don’t want to make any prediction in the first place but we will do everything what it takes to win each game, not only in the NCAA but also during the preseason tournaments like the FIL-OIL and Nike Summer League. We will bring back the pride to the school.

INBOUNDPASS: What are the strength and weaknesses of the Blazers so far?

GA: Although there are more things which need to fix, all I can say right now is we are strong in the No. 2 position (shooting guard). Most of the guys are natural shooters and aggressive slashers. But I keep telling them that we cannot rely solely on our offense. We should also play defense.

It should be 10 percent techniques and 90 percent attitude. Caloy (Garcia) did a good job on his players, although they failed to move to the next level last year. There is no problem in the point guard position. Our disadvantage is the lack of big men and wing players. In short, we are undersized.

We need somebody who has a post threat and a physical type of player who can also score, rebound and block shots. As of now, we don’t have that kind of player in our roster and we are on the look out for future talent.

I think my players Chuck Dalanon, Byron Gan, Harvey Porras and Jeff Morial will be the core of this team next season.

INBOUNDPASS: So who will comprise your coaching staff?

GA: They are Richard Del Rosario, Mon Jose and Marlon Celis. They are all hardworking and defensive oriented coaches.

INBOUNDPASS: Do you favor foreign players in your team?

GA: I don’t like foreign players on my team because personally I favor players who came from the grassroots level though I would consider Fil-Foreign players. I’m also looking at the bigger picture for Philippine basketball. Foreign players cannot represent us in any overseas competition.

INBOUNDPASS: Aside from making Saint Benilde a team to reckon with, what are your other plans?

GA: It is actually easier said than done. Since Saint Benilde joined the NCAA in 1998, everybody was thinking that the school is only the second priority of the parent institution. And De La Salle University which plays in the UAAP is their first priority.

The Green Archers, most of them said, is the main team of the La Salle community. I want to change that view. If we play competitively, I think our image will change. People will realize that we are not the last choice. I want that La Salle and Saint Benilde are both equally competitive. I’m hoping that my goals will be a reality soon.

INBOUNDPASS: Any advice from Coach Yeng Guiao before taking this job?

GA: He is very supportive and I thank him for giving me some advice. I encouraged him to have some pep talk with my players and he promised he would.

INBOUNDPASS: Which team do you think is the strongest next season?

GA: San Beda College is definitely a contender because of their two Nigerians (Sam Ekwe and Kevin Udo). Others are Letran, Mapua, JRU and San Sebastian College, among others. But all of them are beatable if we execute our transition game and play solid defense.

Gee, what was Gee thinking when he made those comments about imports? As if their sister school across the street doesn't have any.

Short commercial lang for Benildeans, Alumni, and especially the other student-athletes in school.

Made-to-order Burning Legion fanshirts are available through the CSB Pep Squad (look for Winston Yu for your orders and measurements) and check out faithintheflame.multiply.com for the new designs along with the original shirt. You could also PM me here for your orders. :D

And now back to the topic. ;)

Mukhang mahina tayo sa 4 and 5 position this year. Medyo made-delay ang prediction ko at mukhang 2010 nga tayo aasenso. After a decade ang trend kaya?

Regarding Gee's comments regarding Ekwe and Udo, he might have felt that it is really San Beda's strength (the two Nigerians). Take away those two and San Beda going all Filipino will make life a bit easier for other competitive teams like SSC-R and Letran to at least match up with San Beda lineup wise.

Compared to CSB's season 83 lineup, kahit na mag all Filipino pa ang San Beda e mahihirapan ang CSB. I just dunno right now since pagdating ng April pa lang malalaman ang prospective lineup ni Gee that we'll see in the upcoming pre-season tourneys that CSB will join in.

Basta huwag mag-give up sa paghahanap ng talents. Sa PRISAA, maraming potential talents diyan. Yung recent tournament sa Cebu, marami ding nakilalang high school players duon. Imbitahan lang sila. BTW,this is an advice from someone not from CSB.

Mar 17, 2008, 02:33 PM
I admire Coach Gee's candor for insisting that local talents can step up big against teams with foreigners or fil-foreign blood skillwise, but I guess the Blazers needed that boost more than the fans. Coach Gee knows his scouting skills will be scrutinized too so goodluck with handling the team and regain the blaze of glory! ;)

Youre making me laugh. Really?? Cmon. I know many will agree with my when I say that CSB's line-up last year aint bad at all. In fact, many have predicted CSB to go as far as the final four based on the line-up analysis alone. Sadyang may game-fixing lang and no passion and determination from the players except maybe in the first and only game they won, and the game against CSJL where they only lost by one point and allegedly yun yung binenta ni Paolo. The line-up is good, but no unity and heart.

And about taking Ekwe out from SBC's line-up.....Ayaw ko nalang magsalita. Peace man.:D

^ well actually, those sites are for all La Sallian schools. Manila, GH, Benilde, Zobel, etc. Dapat lang talaga ma- disseminate yung information. Actually, there are working threads for even for benilde, GH and zobel, it's just that people from those sister schools are not informed about the site.

Anyway, going back to the topic. I wish Benilde will again gain lot of supporters just like when you were in the finals several years back. I remember La Sallians posting na sobrang supportive ang Manila sa Benilde and Benilde sa Manila i think nung both schools won the championship last 2001 or 2000 (?). I hope maulit ulit yun para fiesta ulit along taft! haha!

Nah, ok na yung mga tga La Salle lang **** ang nandun. If Benildeans would register in those sites lalo lang lalakas hatak nila towards DLSU instead of Benilde. I hope you get what I mean. We need Benildeans to support Benilde and not La Salle. Hindi naman nagkukulang supporters nyo eh, pati Benildeans, instead of supporting Benilde, sa DLSU bandwagon nalang sumasama. Thats what's frustrating.:depressed2:

Yeah, I think that was in 2000. Kasi once palang naman nagchampion CSB sa NCAA since they joined in '98. But I find most La Sallians to be putting Benilde down instead of supporting us. Reality yan. I hope with the appointment of Gee Abanila, Blazers Basketball will be revived and reclaim the NCAA crown. CSB ruling the NCAA and DLSU winning it all in the UAAP will be a great boost for the La Sallian community just like back in 2000. Imagine both La Salle school emerging as the champions in their respective tournaments in 2011. Non-stop party!

Good Luck to the CSB Blazers! The Blazers are in good hands!

If LS wins then I'm happy as a brother, but wouldnt you rather support yourself rather than your brother? Wouldnt you rather see yourself win? My two cents.:bop:

For us Manila, probably na establish na namin ang identity namin that's why parang madali na sa amin mag support ng brother schools kasi whether manalo kami or not, La Sallians are still there behind the team. About Letran and UST, they are both Dominican schools (correct me if im wrong) but they came from different origins and different systems unlike Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan and XS wherein they're under one system under the Loyola schools. Same goes with DLS-CSB, DLSU-Canluban, DLSU-Dasmariñas, DLSU-Manila, and the list goes on.

Probably nauna lang ang DLSU-Manila kaya parang when you say La Salle, Manila na agad yun. Though i see your point that each of the schools in a system should have its own identity. Kumbaga dapat din may distinction among the member schools. :)

DLSU-M is getting there. It might happen in 2011. In reality, all the other sports were really hit hard by the suspension. Technically, we are starting all-over again in planting the seeds.

Man, It seems to me that you really want to cut CSB from the La Salle System or De La Salle Philippines. I understand your desire to make benildeans support their own. Believe it or not, we at DLSU-M also have problems getting support. Maybe not as much in Basketball but bleed for support in other sports. The key to get support is winning. Then make it a tradition. Put them together with successful and prominent alumni then that will jump start the school pride and keep it burning. With Gee Abanila at the helm of your basketball program, the winning tradition can start now.

Greenergy is right, it is easy for us to support our brothers because we already have established ourselves. For us, seeing our brothers getting the same success as what we have is a reason for celebration.

I agree with you that it is much better to see yourself win but it also painful to see your brother lose.

Anyway, your passion is commendable. You have my respect. Just be rational yet passionate and look for other students and alumni that has the same passion as yours and support your teams through thick and thin.

especially in recruitment. i think it's about time we share resources. probably the setup is we could help you with sports that you are not faring well in and vice versa. sino sino ba naman ang magtutulungan kung hindi ang magkakapatid.

Benilde's problem is the same problem of other La Salle schools through out the archipelago. Parating Green Archers na lang ang pinaguusapan. I know that the Green Archers basketball team has a winning tradition but let us not forget that there are also other La Salle teams besides the Green Archers. My suggestion is that we convert one of the 4 La Salle websites (AP, GA.NET, LASALISTA.COM AND ONE LA SALLE) into a website dedicated to La Salle sports of other La Salle schools except DLSU. It is through this website all La Sallians can interact when it comes to sports. It is only through this that a La Sallian student, regardless of what La Salle Campus they are in, would have a more intimate knowledge of what is happening in the sport organization their brother schools are participating. It is hard to cheer for a team one does not know anything about.

Forget what La Sallians think, create your own fan base. Suggestion lang, in this Benilde thread, put more interesting pieces of information regarding Benilde. It could be a more serious ones "like possible recruits or final recruits by the Blazers, their hights, game statistics, where they came from, pictures" to the inane "like girlfriends of these players, cutest players, etc." This is to ***** the interest of a wide variety of readers who, hopefully, would become fans thus creating a wide fan base. With regards to the Benildean League, I have no idea whatsoever about that event, and neither was I informed. But I will ask the pep squad about it. And with regards to recruiting players from that league, that will be a good idea but we obviously lack the ceiling in our team so we might as well scout outside and not inside. We already have ample talent in the 1 and 2 positions. Maybe we can get a 3 in that league. ;)

After my conversation with King_neroj a while ago. It made me realize the reality that we only won 11 games in the past 4 Seasons. Since Season 80, our win-lose record went as sour as 11-43. Not to mention the longest losing streak in NCAA history(9 straight loses) last season.

Having said that, my hopes are still high despite the disappointing performance as of late, but if we are to look at reigning NCAA champions San Beda's record in the 81st Season which was 4-10(CSB had a better record that particular year, 5-9, which was also the best we had in the past 4 seasons. But we had NCAA MVP Jay Sagad then), they improved to 13-1 in just one season. Talk about a total 360 degree turnaround.

..problem is, we dont really have a Sam Ekwe, now do we? Dang, I do hope we improve this season 84. Theres no way to go but up for us, right? :hopeless:

:hopeless:

ganyan talaga pare.. minsan nasa ibaba ka, minsan sa taas ka.. what they can't take away from us is winning our first championship in only our third year.. we were still a probationary team then. we gained regular status automatically after we won the championship.

noong tayo ang nasa itaas, san beda was merely a spectator below
the standings.. and we all know that they are the top team now and we're at the bottom.. dadating din ang panahon ulit natin. basta ako (at tayong benildeans), win or lose we should still support our team.

Anyway, the Benildean League, is like intramurals games. Any Benildeans currently enrolled can form a team and join, magbabayad ka lang and magreregister. Ang problema di ko alam which term or kung every term ba may games. Pano kapos kami sa updates sa AKIC. YHE(Young Hoteliers Exposition) lang ang event dun eh.:mecry:

If the CSB sports complex will have the same concept of DLSU's Razon Sports Complex then the swimming pool will be available for the use of the alumni. May sched nga lang. Haha mukhang confirmed na to, kasi pati prof mismo nagsasabi eh.

Commercial lang, talo tayo kanina sa Filoil Flying V cup. I went to watch the game and although we lost in a blow-out, I wasnt that disappointed.

UE humbles CSB, 92-71.
by Get_Blazed

The game was won by UE's 3-point shooting and pressure defense. Turnovers really killed CSB's chances. Despite getting open looks, the Blazers just had a hard time scoring. They struggled the whole first half and ended trailing UE, 21-7 in the first quarter. The first half wrapped up a 30 point lead by the Warriors. The Blazers started to pick up steam by late 3rd quarter, they started knocking down shot after shot and running the break successfully, but proved too late.

Archimedes David was the only Blazer who successfully made 3 pointers, and he was 3-5 in the perimeter. Meanwhile, UE's James Martinez and Paul Lee was toying in the perimeter as they made a lot of trifectas.

Newbies Mac Abulacion and Dalanon together with veterans Illie Johnston, Harvey Porras, Jacob Manlapaz, Archie David, Jeff Morial, and 2nd year player Gelo Montecastro saw action for Benilde. UE was bannered by Hans Thiele, Elmer Espiritu, Paul Lee, James Martinez, and a lot of newcomers. The highlight of the game was the alley-oop dunk connected by high-flying Elmer Espiritu from a miss by UE's Reyes.

UE routs St. Benilde, 92-71

By Jasmine W. Payo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 18:05:00 04/21/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- Sophomore guard Paul Lee paced the University of the East's early scoring tear as the Warriors kicked off their bid with a 92-71 pummeling of the St. Benilde Blazers in the Filoil Flying V Pre-Season Invitational Cup Monday at The Arena in San Juan.

Lee, along with James Martinez and Pari Llagas, towed the Warriors to a 19-7 start that stretched to 31 points, 49-18, late in the second quarter.

Even with the departure of main man Mark Borboran and several other key cogs, the Warriors still looked formidable with new recruits Erwin Duran and Paul Zamar, both elevated from UE's junior team, former Letran Squires ace Lucas Tagarda and San Beda Cubs' John Ray Alabanza.

"We're a smaller team than last year, but we're quicker," said coach Dindo Pumaren of his Warriors, runner-up to La Salle in the last UAAP season.

"Our four veteran players are a big loss, so the performance of the rookies will be important. But I think we'll be all right."

Lee led the balanced charge with 12 points, while Martinez and Toto Bandaying finished with 11 apiece.

Gee Abanilla, a former La Salle assistant mentor, debuted as the Blazers new head coach three months after replacing Caloy Garcia.

The scores:

UE 92--Lee 12, Martinez 11, Bandaying 11, Llagas 9, Espiritu 8, Alabanza 8, Lingganay 8, Thiele 6, Zamar 5, Acuña 5, Duran 4, Etrone 4, Reyes 1, Tagarda 0.

ST. BENILDE 71--Morial 13, David 12, Sevilla 7, Porras 6, Montecastro 6, Dalanon 6, Johnston 4, Manlapaz 4, Abulocion 4, Wong 4, Santos 2, Dino 2, Umlas 1, Manalac 0, Dela Paz 0.

Quarters: 19-7, 52-20, 75-44, 92-71

---I was right, Benilde did win both 3rd and 4th quarters. It was 24-23 for the 3rd, and 27-17 for the 4th. Masyado lang talaga malaki yung lead by the half. *okay*

Martinez Manlapaz Sarmiento
Montecastro Johnston Debuque
Sevilla Manalac Musngi
Tajonera Umlas Abolucion
Kabayao Morial

I think this is the official lineup on the forthcoming Nike Summer League. I really do not know if this would also be the official lineup this NCAA season 84. Any infos on these players ? Would there be any changes come NCAA Season 84?

Let's be realistic here, I don't think we can expect for our beloved alma mater to have a 360 degree turnaround next season...Our lineup is filled with new players, we don't have a clear go-to-guy, we don't have a leader, we don't have size, and our recruiting program is not really doing a good job...still, Animo Benilde! :-)

At least we're able to get the general championship. As for basketball, we're just not getting the right players. We need to overhaul our recruiting program. We should stop getting 3rd or 4th year college players from other schools, those guys can only help us out for 2-3 seasons. We need to get HS graduates who can be future stars in the NCAA. We need to think long term. I won't mind having 2 losing seasons as long as those 2 seasons will be used to give experience to our young freshmen players...

Blazers scorch Knights
by Josef Ramos

The Knights pounded hard but got beat by the Blazers.

The College of Saint Benilde, coached by new mentor Gee Abanilla, refused to call them a “below-par” collegiate squad starting now in the Flying V Pre Season Invitational Cup.

“It shouldn’t be like that. Other teams must respect us,” said Abanilla, after the CSB Blazers outscored the Letran College Knights in the payoff period to eke out a 71-64 come-from-behind win last April 28, 2008 at The Arena in San Juan City. “We should prove our point like what we did today.”

Down by 43-51 at the end of third frame, College of Saint Benilde showed character in the last quarter to bounce back from a sluggish third quarter by unleashing a merciless 28-13 run that handed the Blazers their first win in two games.

“I though we almost lost it, but I’m happy the boys have learned how to win,” said Abanilla, also an assistant coach in Red Bull in the PBA. “I’m hoping all my players will sustain this kind of game.”

Forward Jeff Morial led the Blazers with 11 points, while Jacob Manlapaz collected 13 rebounds and hit 10 markers and Harvey Porras had 10 points.

Morial and Porras merged for 20 points in the final quarter, including the fast break lay up of Porras that pushed the Blazers to a 66-64 lead with 1:12 minutes to go. The Knights could not find a decent shot in the last minute mark while the Blazers had five attempts from the free throw line to peg the final count.

The game was close at first quarter (16-all) and College of Saint Benilde took the halftime lead at 34-36.

Reymar Gutilban led Letran with 14 points with Dino Daa contributing for 12 points. Bryan Foronda and RJ Jazul had 11 points each for the Knights.

Individual Scores:

CSB (71) — Morial 11, Umlas 10, Manlapaz 10, Porras 10, David 8, Montecastro 7, Abolucion 4, Dela Paz 4, Santos 4, Manalac 3, Wong 0, Johnston 0, Dino 0.

Letran (64) - Gutilban 14, Jazul 11, Foronda 11, Daa 10, Cabonce 7, Guevarra 4, Ranises 3, Dangcal 2,
Foronda 2, Latonio 0, Melegrito 0, Cortez 0.

Quarter Scores: 16-16, 36-34, 43-51, 70-64.

Three Cheers for Benilde! Its about time we start winning. Sana trend na. ANIMO!*okay*

BTW, I might watch a CSB game again. Baka yung ADMU-CSB this wed.

Teka, grabe ka naman ata. Di naman kelangan ng chamba. Mukhang nagimprove na drastically ang Blazers. I was impressed with the squad's performance during the UE-CSB game. Though it was a blow-out. Let's just hope it would be a good game. Good luck to the Blazers!*okay*

Hmmm, I like what Coach Gee is doing with the team! Kulang kasi sa stability ang team dahil wala na nga killer instinct eh hindi pa marunong mag-maintain ng lead sa last quarter kaya natatalo. At least they can prove their worth this coming season with this game against Letran. It's a statement game for the Blazers that they can win games. ;)

They can play small ball if the coach wanted it to but the mentality must be solid. Cohesion, trust in their teammates, and a never-say-die attitude. Hay, na-miss ko na ang Ginebra team ni Jawo. :glee:

Buenafe and Reyes saves Blue Eagles from disastrous finish
by Josef Ramos

Incoming freshman Ryan Buenafe finally showed up when it mattered most as the Ateneo De Manila University Blue Eagles survived a dangerous comeback by Saint Benilde Blazers, 76-72, last April 30, 2008 in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Cup at The Arena in San Juan City .The Ateneo crowd at the arena could not believe what they saw when the Blazers started to crawl thier way back into the game.

“We collapsed in the fourth quarter and nearly lost the game,” said Ateneo head coach Norman Black. “I’m surprised Saint Benilde is starting to mature since Gee (Abanilla) took the coaching job three months ago.”

The Blue Eagles, relying heavily on Rabeh Al-Hussaini’s inside game, outscored the Blazers in the first quarter, 27-13, and eventually controlled the first half, 43-26, with Buenafe providing some offense.

But the Blazers, injected by Abanilla’s never-say-die attitude, did not surrender easily as Aaron Umlas delivered 10 of his 12 points in the third quarter, including three straight baskets, to trim down the Blue Eagles lead to 51-56 at the start of the final quarter.

Saint Benilde outplayed Ateneo in the third quarter, 25-13.

Both teams traded baskets in the early minutes of the fourth quarter, keeping the score close thrice just under the last three-minute mark (68-65), (70-68) and (74-72).

Gary Sevilla, who got 11 points for the Blazers, attempted to steal the limelight with 8.2 seconds remaining, when he fired an open trey but was off the mark.

Saint Benilde fouled Blue Eagles’ Jai Reyes and Chris Tiu and sent them to the free throw line making both thier charity opportunities to peg the final count.

Buenafe scored 6 of his 17 points in the last quarter, while Tiu fired 5 of his 14 points to calm down the Blazers’ scoring rampage in the last period.

Rabeh Al-Hussaini had 17 points in the first quarter and Nonoy Baclao had 11 rebounds. Ateneo improved its record to 3-2 while Saint Benilde dropped to 1-2. Harvey Poras led the Blazers with 13 points

Ateneo 76: Al-Hussaini 17, Buenafe 17, Tiu 14, Buenafe 12, Reyes 7, Long 6, Chua 4, Baclao 3, Baldos 3, Escueta 3, Austria 2.

CSB 72: Porras 13, Umlas 12, Sevilla 11, David 8, Morial 8, Manalac 7, Montecastro 6, Dalanon 5, Manlapaz 2

Quarter Scores: 27-13, 43-26, 56-51, 76-72

What is more alarming is the rate of players from LSGH going to other colleges and universities. Exodus ****. Di mo naman masisisi mga tiga-Zobel na pumunta sa DLSU, pero I was hoping sana mga players ng LSGH would opt to stay with Benilde in the NCAA(instead of going to DLSU in the UAAP, like Ferdinand). Sana si Martin Reyes of LSGH would go to Benilde nalang. Much help is needed.:hmm:

Blazers torch Golden Stags
by Josef Ramos

Since Gee Abanilla came to Saint Benilde, exactly four months ago, the College of Saint Benilde Blazers have finally embraced, well hopefully, a winning attitude.

Abanilla and his College of Saint Benilde Blazers lost to UE and Ateneo, but the preseaons is not over yet, there maybe more victims to come.

Last May 12, 2008, the CSB Blazers buckled up and surpassed the gritty challenge of the San Sebastian College Golden Stags with an 84-74 victory in the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre Season Cup at The Arena in San Juan City.

“We’ve learned from those two losses and the boys are improving well,” said Abanilla, an assistant with the Red Bull Barakos in the PBA. “I just need to be patient. Who knows? Some things might happen not only in this league but also on our way to Season 84.”

College of Saint Benilde took advantage the absence of Jim Viray and Jason Ballesteros, both playing for Burger King in the PBL, to take a 21-10 start.

With John Paul Raymundo and Ian Delgado hitting clutch baskets, the Golden Stags refused to give up early and reduced the deficit by halftime, 30-38.

But the Blazers’ determination prevailed by unleashing a superb 8-0 start to increase their edge, 46-30 with 6:17 minutes to go in the third period. The Stags responded with a quick 12-0 counter to trim the deficit to 46-42 with 1:56 miutes left.

Harvey Porras’ three-point play sparked the Blazers’ 6-1 run to close the third quarter and stay ahead, 52-43.

Angelo Montecastro, kept Saint Benilde on track, as he racked up 13 of his game-high 19 points in the final period. Keith Sevilla established 8 points in the 4th quarter on the way to duplicate his game high 19 points to bury the Stags to a 2-4 slate.

After marking an 80-70 lead in the last 2:44 minutes, the Blazers milked the clocke and matched the Golden Stags’ four baskets with less than 2 minutes left in the game and improve their record to 2-2. Harvey Porras had 15 points and 5 rebounds for the Blazers.

Dave Najorda led the Golden Stags with 17 points, while Jimbo Aquino and John Paul Raymundo added 12 points apiece forSan Sebastian, currently playing for Harbour Centre Head Coach Jorge Gallent in Baguio City.

Individual Scores:

CSB – 84: Sevilla 19, Montecastro 19, Porras 15, David 6, Umlas 6, Johnston 5, Morial 5, Manlapaz 4, Manalac 3, Dalanon 2.

SSC-R –74: Najorda 17, Aquino 12, Raymundo 12, Maconocido 9, Bringas 7, Bulawan 7, Delgado 6, Taha 2, Semira 2.

Individual Scores: 21-10, 38-30, 52-43, 84-7

Jose Rizal nips Benilde
by Jonas Terrado

A strong second half performance put Jose Rizal University out of the tight start to secure a 68-60 nipping of fellow NCAA member College of Saint Benilde in the only scheduled morning game of the 2008 Nike Summer League seniors divisions at the FEU gym in Manila last May 13.

The Heavy Bombers put a stifling defense on the Blazers to lead by double-figures for almost the whole duration of the second half en route to the win and improved their standing to a 3-3 win-loss card.

JRU, however, is in fourth place and appears to be out of contention for a slot in the quarterfinals with unbeaten Group C leaders FEU, University of the East, and the third-place Blazers, who dropped to a 3-2 mark, in front.

An 8-0 run in the last 2:30 of the second quarter gave the Mandaluyong-based squad the lead at halftime, 33-28, capped off by a running fade away shot by Ildefonso Bulangis with 13 ticks left.

In the middle portion of the third, John Wilson hit five points while Raycon Kabigting put up seven markers, including a triple that made it a 50-35 spread with 1:34 in the said period for their biggest margin of the day.

It was the frontline of James Sena and Jayson Nocom who led the Heavy Bombers. Sena recorded 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while Nocom contributed a double-double by scoring 10 and grabbing 10 boards on 5-for-6 shooting as both schooled CSB in the paint with their inside presence.

"We have been struggling lately because most of our players are in the PBL at ngayon lang naging buo 'yung team," quoted JRU head coach Ariel Vanguardia. "Hopefully, ngayon mag-gel yung mga veterans at mga bagong players sa team."

The Blazers matched up well with the Heavy Bombers after a 6-0 start while lanky Archimedes David fired three shots from the three-point range as the Taft-based team nailed five triples in the first half.

But Saint Benilde, who was mentored by assistant Richard del Rosario in absence of head coach Gee Abanilla, made just two shots from beyond the arc since and was held to just 13 points in the third canto to trail 54-41.

"We gave them (CSB) a lot of outside shots in the first half," Vanguardia remarked. "Ginawa namin sa second half, dinikitan namin yung mga shooters nila at nacontain naman sila."

David topscored for the black and green squad with 15 points and eight rebounds while Garri Sevilla added 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Point guard Anjelo Monteclaro put in nine points along with six assists in a reserve role.

The closest effort for the Blazers to come back was at 37-33 as Sevilla hit a three with 7:56 to go only for them to score just two points the next six minutes to fall behind by a large margin in the third quarter.

"Benilde is a rebuilding team but they are also dangerous, we cannot take them lightly," said Vanguardia, who had seven markers from K abigting with Wilson adding six markers alongside Maui Pradas, who bankrolled two threes in the game.

The Heavy Bombers wrapped up their campaign on Friday against Polytechnic University of the Philippines while Benilde meets University of the Philippines in the curtain raiser on the same day.

I beleive that this coming NCAA season the Blazers will no longer be in the cellar. Sad thing though, a lot of players trying out for the Archers never considered the Blazers as an alternative. Ciruela and Bolivar went to UP. Heard Okubo is trying to join Jec Fortuna at UST.
Sorela is gone. Noble went to UE. I hope someday some marquee players would consider Benilde in the future.

As for the Patriots, I think they are in a worse situation than the Blazers since their team does not belong to what a lot consider premier leagues. However, hoping that the Patriots would be able to acquire good quality STUDENT/ATHLETES in order to challenge the top teams in the leagues they are playing in.

What CSB and DLSU-D need to do is get in touch with their respective alumni and make a bloc or booster program that can really help student-athletes. But it's going to be a long climb but I'm sure we will achieve dominance in basketball soon. Nakapag-overall or general championship na ba ang Patriots sa UCAA or NCRAA?

The Myth of La Salle Main

Though a lot of people use this term, there is no such thing as "La Salle Main". While DLS-CSB is an independent, Catholic institution, it is part of De La Salle Philippines (DLSP), which is composed of the 18 district schools in the country.

Source: DLS-CSB Fresh Perspective 2006 issue

Hope this helps enlighten everyone. Things have changed since 2006 when DLSP was established. Naging independent na ang different colleges na under ng DLS system unlike before. Each member institution will have its own chancellor and school board and will have full autonomy in governing its own institution. Noong DLSU-CSB pa kami, main campus pa **** ang La Salle. But not anymore.*okay*

I think that DLSU's main advantage against its sister schools is age. DLSU is older than any of its siblings. Hence, the older the school the older is its alumni. The older its alumni, the more these alumni are in a position to finance DLSU's sports program specially the basketball team. Reason, is that a number of older alumni are in the top echelons in their fields of endeavors. Thus we hear of the Cojuancos, Romeros and some prominent Chinese alumni supporting the Archers. I would not be surprised that some of the more rabid supporters of the Archers are the alumni. This also hold true for Ateneo. You do not see a Buenafe or a Salva or a Justin Chua going
to Ateneo de Naga, Ateneo de Davao or it's sister schools.

I think one solution, at the moment, is for the sports division of each sister schools to use their influence in approaching DLSU alumni whose companies are in the PBL or any other amateur commercial leagues to allow a number of their promising team members to play in their team to acquire a higher level of skills and experience. This has been done by the Blazers whose players one way or the other have played in the PBL. La Salle Dasma, La Salle Lipa, La Salle Bacolod or even La Salle Araneta could do the same.

I think CSB has had enough of the "networking" since we all know who gets the bigger piece of the pie. At least we can count our blessings when there will come a time that we achieved success without having to recruit real marquee players. If UST can do it, why can't we? ;)

Then again someone had told me that an alumni of DLSU-M is also interested in funding the Blazers as a result of Coach Gee's being staioned as head coach. Cant verify this though.:bop:

For CSB players to be good, they do not have to be in the PBL. As we can see the trend of Champion NCAA and UAAP teams, we can see now that in the last few years they are not sending players in the PBL during February-May. Why? this to make there team cohesive come the NCAA or UAAP season. Making players play in PBL during this period would create a very big conflict on the team. Based on my personal experience I have witnessed it happen in CSB. And this had a very big impact in their season. For the program Coach Gee is doing now, my hats off to him. He is really building the team and come NCAA wars I know they will be ready as a team, not as individually crafted players.

I agree, Coach Gee's method of coaching may help improve the Blazers sooner than we think. We play like there's nothing to lose and we hope for the best! ;)

With Jay Sagad naman he really worked on his game to improve. I don't think the PBL experience he got helped him. I should know this 'cause we were former team mates. How can a minute or two in a PBL ball game can help? It can just ruin your confidence, knowing that you could perform well but you are not utilized. You can ask around the former Blazers' players who played in Welcoat if the experienced help them. I can bet 9 out of 10 would say no..

I guess the tie-up with Welcoat was not good for the Blazers back then. I think we should stick to basics and rebuild through cohesion and scouting more role players in the years to come. :D

This is an eye opener. So PBL didn't help. Then, how come Benilde champion, in the past slid down to the cellar?
Why didn't Benilde retain the coach then? What went wrong?

You will have to ask the Dean or the SDO people who were there when the Blazers won the crown. It's a decision that the school administrators had to make after the 2002-2003 season. ;)

So sorry but I am not from Benilde. Just want to find out what happened.

Well that's how it is with most schools with declining supremacy in basketball and an administration that scrutinizes everything within the Sports Development Office, you usually change everything from the coach down to the players that they get and focus on other sports that excel. The wholistic approach for all CSB athletes was fruitful despite the decline of the Blazers basketball team. 2 general championships within almost a decade of joining the NCAA is a feat in itself. ;)

Pardon my ignorance, who was the coach when Benilde became champion in basketball?

Most likely Dong Vergeire coached that team to a title in the 2000 season.

Yes, and coach Dong got a few transferees (Salvacion, Magpayo, etc.) with his arrival as coach of the Blazers. Like a whirlwind romance that lasted for only 3 seasons with one trophy to boot.

That was 2 Over-all championships in 3 years, mind you. And should the ManCom decide to strip PCU of their 2006 crown(which was also reportedly being deliberated on), we would be 3-peat champions of the NCAA.*okay*

I dont think the "Weekend Warrior" was a transferee. Based on what I have read, he was a high school recruit form Surigao(confirm this please).

I want to talk about the Blazers' days in the NCRAA too. Please tell us about it.:D

Having the team reach the championship only after 3 seasons is not a bad record. It fact it was awesome. What caused the romance to end?
