i lived in chicagoland for two years. loved it there bebe. nothing beats watching a bears-packers game in the middle of a snowstorm in an open-air stadium sitting right beside a lake.

and the cubs still suck.

my grandfather was a practicing surgeon in Chicago but he lived in Munster, Indiana- that's like 30 mins from Chicago... that's where we usually free-load...

btw, i was wondering...

Mets-Yankees= Subway Series, Giants-A's= Bay Area Series, Indians-Braves= Politically Incorrect Series, Royals-Cardinals= Missouri Series....

what do they call a White Sox-Cubs series then?

Before inter-league play, the Cubs and Sox played exhibition games in the middle of the season and it was called the "Windy City Classic".

Chicago......my hometown!

I came from New Jersey and transferred here due to employment reasons. There's no place like Chicago...nothing can beat the life in Lake Shore Drive and the lakefront.

My circle of Pinoy friends and me love this city so much to the point that we bought pieces of America.

I like Boston, San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Baltimore but my heart belongs to this toddlin' town called CHICAGO!

Are you the same Kaboom administrator of the famed UAAP games topic(s)? Small world. Whereabouts in the Chicago area did you grow up? What grade school, high school, and college did you go to? I grew up in the Uptown area and went to Senn High School.

Yup, I'm the UAAP guy.

I lived in Skokie and went to school at St. Peter's, Loyola Academy, and Northwestern U. (I moved to Evanston) for my GS,HS,and college years.

I never got to visit Senn but a lot of my Flip friends were from the Northside of Chicago who went to St. Hilary's down close to Foster and California. I think Lane TEch and Gordon Tech were the high schools in the area. It's been awhile although I plan on visiting this Christmas break.

I was still fairly idealistic after graduating from college in 94 and wanted to make a difference in my home country instead of the U.S. of A.

Until recently with all the political chaos around here, I've really enjoyed my stay here.

I'm not from Chicago, obviously, but can someone please tell me how it's like living over there....Is the cost of living high? What are the people like? Are there a lot of Filipinos? What's the weather like? blah blah blah...

My mom and I are seriously thinking of moving to another state after I graduate from college. Call it paranoia or what-not, but a whole buncha psychics (and scientists) predict that the Earth is gonna go through cataclysmic changes within the next decade or so...Supposedly, most of California is going to sink and only a few islands will remain. :(

Hi Caligirl! The cost of living in Chicago is not as high as California. For the price you pay in California for a small home, you can get one for the same price in Chicago that's at least double the size with a nice size yard and real grass. There are plenty of jobs out here and our downtown area is much cleaner than San Francisco's. When it gets hot here, it's hot & very humid. The only thing you'll probably need to get used to is the cold winter & driving in the snow or icy roads. The past winters have been pretty mild with a couple of really frigid cold temps (negative temps in the teens with a wind chill of -20's or even -30's) and/or snow storms. You learn to get use to it.
I've been to San Francisco and compared to there, Chicago is much more conservative and tame. Of course, there are bad parts of Chicago too, like any other town.

If you're worried about whether you can afford to live, well then let me tell you that you can get a lot more for you money in Chicago than California. I hope this helps.

Why is my viewpoint on Chicago different from LaRose? hehehe...

Chicago is just more closet-liberal than California in General... We still have that Midwestern mentality that's why and that is what makes Chicago unique.. Very cosmopolitan and yet country in mentality..

chicago is a great town, full of art and music. the chicago caters to every musical taste, but if you love the blues, chicago is for you.

great theatres in and around the downtown area; plays cost around $5-$55 on average. even the dirt cheap theatrical productions are extremely entertaining.

hoardes of great restaurants. if you like food, it'll take you years to go through all the restaurants in the downtown area alone.

lots of events sponsored by the city all year round. plenty of parades to go to almost every month of the year.

all nations, all creeds; its a very interesting mix of races. about as many pinoys as there are other asian/pacific-islaners. we're still a minority, but there's enough of us to go around. the pinoy population over here isn't as overwhelming as it is in CA.

if you live in the city, public transportation is very efficient. you could give up your car altogther and still survive.

if you live out in the burbs, traffic is light. housing is reasonable. city facilities abound.

the only real "downer" (if you could call it that) is the weather. summers are scorching hot, winters are incredibly chilly. the lake dumps a ton of snow on the city every so often.

besides that though, its a great city to live in. the only thing better than living in chicago would probably be living in new york. :)

HTH!

oh yes it is! i've never been there, but my flamboyantly gay (and very cosmopolitan, I might add) friend from my office goes there all the time. it’s true, the place is packed with “the beautiful people”, but a lot of them are looking for partners of the same sex!

my friend has managed to pick up numerous “boyfriends” at this club, so don’t expect too much action if you’re straight, is all I’m saying.

...to give you today's weather in Chicago...

low in the 20s and high in the 30s, sun is out and wind is mild coming from the North East...

this couldn't be any better on winter days... only if we could just melt all the freakin' snow that got dumped on us a few weeks back...

- favorite winter past time?

going out by Montrose beach (parking lot) in the dead of winter when there's at least a foot and a half of snow on the ground and putting my four-wheel drive Grand Vitara to the ultimate test... oh man! what an exhilaration... just make sure to bring a shovel with you though... you can never trust those freakin' four foot snow drifts...

I grew up here in Chicago. Hubby and I have been trying to relocate somewhere warm. Kaya lang comes summer, lumalabo yung plano namen. Chicago is the best during summer season kasi. Lots of things to do and places to go. This is also a shopping mecca. Bargains everywhere lalo na pag tapos na ang season. The Europeans come here to shop, so I heard bus load full of Germans goes shopping for electronic gadgets here in Chi-town.

Winter temps sucks, I agree but spring, summer and fall are the best seasons. It's also easy to get a job here and housing is still affordable. Kaya lang Caligirl, walang magandang view dito not like Ca. F0r5, S/F is so beautiful. My sister and her family lives there and I do visit them at least once a year. I love S/F I think it's one of the most beautiful city in the US but sooooooo expensive.

Btw, guys if you enjoy Persian food, try Noon-Ka-Bob on Kedzie Ave near the ravenswood train station. Excellent food and very cheap. Also, if you like Japanese food, try Midori on Bryn Mawr near Northeastern U. ----very affordable.

Dude, I like your old neighborhood. You know that area is what they called second China Town or Vietnamese town. I call it Argyle. I like hanging out at ethnic neighborhood. On Western/Devon where the Indian town is. I love curry food. Have you tried that Indian beer? I forgot the name but it's really good. Not much happening in the area where I live---pretty boring. No gangbangers, broken glasses or burnt tires anywhere. I live about 10 min from O'hare and 15min away from downtown.

I went to Notre Dame High School. Hey, my 2 brothers and a younger sister went to Lane tech.

Btw, have you heard of Rex Navarrete? He's a Pinoy comedian now living in S/F but grew up in Chicago. He's really funny. I think he has a CD.

I don't remember coz I didn't hang out with them back then. I think in the eighties? I should ask them, that is if I can get hold of them. They're so busy. One lives in Oregon and the other lives in Florida.

Btw, guys, if you're like me, I'm a breakfast girl, try the Original Walker Brother's pancake house in Wilmette. They have the best Apple pancake, butter pancakes, crepes, omelette etc. And the Kona coffee is to die for. Yuuuuummmmm......

Club 720 is in downtonw Chicago. There's no cover charge before 10pm on Fridays and before 11:00pm on Saturdays. They also offer free salsa dance class and I think it starts at 9:00pm on Fridays and Sats. Also, it has 3 or 4 level dance floors. Speaking of Fil Rest, Pinoy food is puro meat and I'm a vegitarean for the past 12 years so I haven't been to a Pinoy rest in 15 years.

bzbee....

yup, we're neighbors and i used to work around cumberland and higgins that building next door to marriot's hotel. i used to go home for lunch. since, i'm a contractor i normally request my agency that i want to work in that area cuz it only takes me 10 minutes to get there. it's also convenient for me cuz it's right by the bally's healthclub where i work out. btw, my last day at this job will be the end of may, i'm gonna ask my agency to look for a job for me around cumberland so maybe we can do lunch. whadya think?

haaaaay, right now i'm 20 minutes from home which is bad for me but when they mentioned that the co. is walking distance from Old Orchand Mall, then I accepted.

i know that fil store you're talking about. i've pass by there many times but never been there. i normally go to argyle/broadway (vietnamese town) at least once every 3 months to buy my ingredients and desserts. have you been there? daing pinoy.

Hello everyone,

For 11 years, I called Chicago my hometown. In fact, my parents, my sister, and a lot of my relatives still live in Chicago. Unfortunately, work has required me to live in a different city. I now live in Atlanta. Culturally, it is not like Chicago but it is sufficient. One thing great about Atlanta is it is spring here already.

However, I do miss Chicago. (That's why I try to go home at least once a month.) I miss the museums, the festivals, the food, the shops, the bars, and the culture. (I personally like Gino's East.)

That's about it.

Cheers.

I lived in the northern suburbs and Eduardo's Pizza was the best deep dish in the area right by the Old Orchard Mall in Skokie. Uno, Gino's East, and Giordano's are all good as well.

But one of my favorite foods was the Buffalo Wings at Buffalo Joe's in Evanston.

Wow, ang sarap mo naman. You're only few steps from the health club. Do you work out sa Bally's? I kinda prefer the one on Dempster/Waukegan cuz mas malaki and lots of parking space. The fil store is also close to the health club and yeah, I think I'll drop by there one of these days. It looks like a big store.

Do you hang out with your Pinoy co-workers? Where I work, they are 2 pinays and 3 pinoys. Sometimes I would join them for lunch sa cafeteria. They always make a comment na puro "DAMO" yung ulam ko. The 2 guys work in the mailroom and when there are extra newspapers or magazines, they'd drop it off in my office. They're very nice people.

Regarding Blind Faith, there's also one on Dempster and Chicago Ave also in Evanston. They have good stuff there and sometimes I go there for lunch. Where do you food shop? That's my favorite past time food shopping. It takes me forever to shop coz I read all the ingredients. I just think it's fun. I love food and I love to eat. My favorite stores are Wholefoods market for Organic produce and bulk stuff and Peoples Market and Trader Joe's in Glenview. You should check out Trader Joe's. I can spend the whole day over there---very reasonable ang price nila.

Hey, when I go work out sa Bally's, I'm going to drop by and ask for you, bzbee. I'm going to say, I'm here to see bzbee, is she available? Ok lang ba sayo?

It's just the Winter months that you want to get away from that awesome city! But once Spring/Summer/Fall comes around, you know it's the best city to be in!!! :) Playing softball in the summer.. rollerblading on Lake Michigan... Taste of Chicago.. watching the Cubs.. Biking to the Botanical Gardens... chillin at D&B's downtown and at Cheesecake Factory... chillin at Navy Pier... there's just no other city like the Windy City!

I've always taken Chicago for granted. Now that I live in another area, I really didn't realize how off the hook Chi-town is! High School Seniors Bare Breasts

School and police officials are trying to stop the Mardi Gras-type tradition at Lake Forest High School in Chicago, where groups of senior girls ride past the school and flash their bare breasts to students gathered on the front lawn.

In a letter to parents that is scheduled to be sent out this week, school officials are promising to put the school in a virtual "lock down" and to go after any of the demonstrators. "The school board and the administration will take a strong stand against any misguided acts that destroy school property, endanger students, violate public laws, disrupt the educational process or embarrass the District," the letter states. Officials promise to suspend students or revoke graduation and prom privileges. "It is our hope that we can conclude this school year without incident, and the Class of 2001 will graduate with positive memories."

Last year, about 400 students crowded onto the school's front lawn to witness the ritual where some 20 senior girls drive by and reveal their bare breasts. Administrators tried to prevent the spectacle by locking the school's doors the day before the prom, the traditional Senior Ditch Day, but were thwarted by the girls when the girls changed the date.

This year, a similar lockdown will take place May 18 and police are now promising to crack down on the display. Students involved in illegal activities, such as public nudity and underage drinking, will be arrested, according to police officials. A patrol car will be placed near the school to keep an eye on things.

Will all that be enough to stop the tradition? "No way," said Amanda Moorehead, 16, a junior. "It's illegal for teens to drink and that still goes on."

This time around, I was not able to see much of the country. However, I have been there several times in the past year and I have seen a lot of it during those previous trips.

Amsterdam (the largest city in the Netherlands) is a cool city. It has everything. I mean everything.

Hi!

I love Chicago! It's`a cool and friendly town. I dig the drastic change in weather and the abrupt drop in temperatures. I love when the flowers start to bloom and trees thicken their leaves. I love it when we get a couple of days of heatwave. Everybody seems to complain but me! I love to go bike riding along the lakeshore line and/or just plain sitting under the sun on Foster beach and watch everybody have a good time. I occasionally go to the filipino restaurant located on Western Ave for a quick "pinoy food fix". I am looking forward to the 4th of July fireworks and hang-out at Navy Pier. I love this town. Perhaps, we can all get together and hang-out this summer.

PS. Hello there, WOMANONTOP! It sounds like you and I would get along. Wanna go shopping on the avenue?

Makulit......

Sure..... I'll hangout with you...... Not sure about shopping coz I'm on FINANCIAL DIET right now. I stop buying business casual outfits since wala naman akong ma bu-business. I find myself wearing my old sweatpants and
t- shirts because matagal narin akong di naglinis ng bahay at yung backyard namen eh parang gubat na so nagtanim tanim din ako ng flowers and vegies etc. Also, I'm spending alot of time at our local animal shelter at nagpapaligo nang manga stray na aso. Do you have a pet? Why don't you come and visit me at the Anti-Cruelty animal shelter located at Grand and LaSalle. Instead na magshopping, magpaligo nalang tayo ng mga aso at ilaro yung mga pusa. At saka kung me ma dodonate ka ng mga used towels or hairdryer na di mo naginagamet, we can use it at the shelter. Thank you in advance,huh...

Anyways, type ko rin yung mag hangout diyan sa lakefront and checkout those bun-buns nang mga cutie Puerto Rican papi... haaaaayyyyy ang sarap kuruten talaga, diba? Ok... we'll just touch base....

Hey Forsaken, I hear you. Still don't know what you mean by ghetto. Senn was a decent public high school during my time. I don't think it was one of the top high schools in Chicago in the 80s. You've got to be kidding. Its heyday was probably in the 1960s. I knew a few people at Lane Tech. What years were you there?

From June 1 to August 31, 2001, a donation of P1.00 will be made to the Chosen Children's Village Foundation (CCVF) for every new post made in The Working Filipino forum.

CCVF operates the Chosen Children's Village in Silang, Cavite. The bulk of CCVF's cash balances are held in the form of deposits with Urban Bank. As you may know, Urban Bank is under financial rehabilitation and is unable to open for regular business. Meanwhile, CCVF must rely on contributions from friends and benefactors to sustain its operations.

An anonymous donor has agreed to contribute an amount to CCVF based on the number of TWF posts during the period mentioned, up to a maximum amount of P5,000.00. For simplicity, we have assigned 12,000 posts as the baseline figure against which we shall count new posts. We of course reserve the right to delete or move posts due to duplication, redundancy, off-topic, spam, flaming, or flooding.

We invite you to do your share in helping this worthy endeavor. Post your thoughts in TWF, and help a good cause.

An Overview

As Big as a Country

Globally Diversified Economy

The World's Workforce

Center of the World

Transportation Nexus

Telecommunications Hub

The Good Life

An Overview

Chicago has always been in the center of things--at the crossroads of the largest economy on earth.

Chicago is a place grown rich on location and transportation--drawing to itself first the railroads, then the communications wires, then the interstates and the airplanes. And through it all the City has drawn the peoples of the world, to be proudly hyphenated Americans, to make money, to build a life, to raise a family; and to live and work together as Chicagoans.

Life at the center is a story of constant change and innovation. Chicago has continually reinvented itself, always taking leadership in new sectors, resulting in North America's most diversified economy.

This combination of market access and economic diversity offers all of the resources you need to build a successful, world-class business--stability, support, opportunities for growth, and the good life.

Chicago is a place where middle-class values and neighborhood-focused family living are our highest ideals. We offer America's best big-city quality-of-life, a place where everyone can personalize their pursuit of happiness through one of the world's headiest mixes of culture, education and fun.

The Boeing Company seized on all these attributes in choosing Chicago as its new world headquarters location, from which to manage its American operations and to compete as an even more global company.

You may be surprised to learn that Chicago has everything you need, no matter what your interest, industry or profession. Let us introduce you to our great American city.

As Big as a Country

$333 billion economy--larger than Argentina, Russia, or the State of Michigan

Since 1990, Chicago's economy has grown by over $145 billion--an average annual growth rate of nearly 6%

8.3 million people, 4.2 million jobs and over 200,000 businesses

Since 1990, the region's population has increased by nearly 862,000 people--a growth rate of 11.6%

Globally Diversified Economy

35 Fortune 500 company headquarters

#1 in high-technology employment (347,100 workers) - $35 billion regional high--tech output and over 7,100 companies

#1 city for air travel -- 43 international non-stop flights (15 additional direct flights) and 143 domestic flights

#1 distribution center -- #1 truck, #1 intermodal, #1 rail, #1 air

Chicago boasts over 100 language groups and over 130 foreign-language media outlets

Hundreds of foreign-owned firms have found their American home in and around Chicago

Center of the World

Chicago is at the center of one of the largest trading areas in the world -- with a regional exchange of goods and services greater than U.S./Canada trade

50% of the North American industrial economy is within one day's truck delivery

75% of North America's consumers are less than 2 day's truck delivery away

Our location, central time zone and unequalled non-stop passenger service means that you can fly to meet with clients, or customers, in nearly any U.S. city and return on the same business day

Within a four-hour flight of all major North American business destinations

Less than ten hours from the major European business centers

Nine daily non-stops to Japan, Korea and China

Transportation Nexus

A non-stop global gateway to 43 international and 143 domestic business centers

The leading intermodal container port in the Western Hemisphere, with more than twice the volume of Los Angeles and more than five times that of New York

52,000 truckloads of freight (1.76 million tons) are shipped from Chicago each day

70% of all available industrial real estate is devoted to distribution

Telecommunications Hub

The world's largest Internet exchange point--by volume--is located in the central business district

Home to the only facility in the world that allows for a cooperative interconnection point among numerous international advanced research networks

North America's largest "carrier hotel" (server/data storage/routing hardware facility) is located in downtown Chicago

How have you been MAMA? :)

Hey Chicagobabe.......

Aren't we all financially strapped? Thanks to Kuya Bin Laden. If he didn't bomb WTC, I probably still out shopping right now. I used to drink starbucks cafe mocha or machiato or frafuccino every morning nowadays my choice of drink is NESCAFE.

Ok.... I'm not complaining. I've alot to be thankful for and it's just waaaayyyyy too long to list them.

Christmas in Chicago? That would be nice. You'll have a white Christmas. Hey, there's lots of bargains out there for airfare. Try ATA or Expedia.com. ok? Now, go study and finish your homework.

I was at Grant Park last Saturday for the Blues Fest's first weekend, and there was a ton of people there! I would say a little over half of a regular Taste of Chicago day. Good thing the weather was pretty nice out, a little too warm and muggy, but who cares! It's summer!

I stuck around for a while. It actually got cold and windy by the time they started with the fireworks!
