Here's my only message:
Getting admitted is just one step. Being retained is another. Passing the Bar is a totally different story. Remember, your first day at law school as a freshman is the start of the Bar review.

But is it like that at UP Law? :naughty:

Anyway, hindi pumasa ang anak ni Manny Villar who's a Harvard graduate. Kung sakaling makapasok siya, palatandaan ito na merong daya sa LAE.

Anyway, I'd like to ask those who have undergone the interview to share some tips, stories, legends, or whatnot just so those to be interviewed will not be in the dark. Will appreciate!

Job interview-type of questions are NOT being asked. They also cite cases where you'll have to give your stand (I'm not revealing the questions). The interview is like a cross examination. You will be tested mentally and emotionally (to determine if you're capable of surviving the Socratic method). Another advice: don't break down.

So I have to be logical and ethical, or at the least, appear to be so. Ha ha

Salamat!

So how many professors will there be in the panel? I'm jittery about the possible changes they will be introducing this year in the interviews. Rumor has it that the change is due to junior students flunking you-know-what. The connection? I have but guesses.

It'll be hard not to do that. During my friend's interiview, the two interviewers spent 30 minutes poring over his transcript and laughing at all the 4s and 5s in his record. He swore those two farts were going to suffer cardiac arrest the way they laughed at his grades.

"Hey look, he got a 5.0 in math 11, hahahahahahahaha!"
"...there's another 5.0, nya-hahahahahahaha!"
"...and another, hahahahahahahahahaha!"

He's now a lawyer. Well-paid.

I remember someone telling me that in an interview Haydee Yorac asked the applicant if he thought she was ugly.

He said she wasn't. Ayun, nagalit daw si Haydee Yorac and said, I know I'm ugly and asked him to defend his answer. Basta ang alam ko, pahirapan nga ang interview sa LAE passers.

nick_stokes_27
Jan 25, 2008, 04:38 PM
The interview process is highly subjective. You usually have a two-three people in your panel. One of them is the designated bad cop. If your luck sucks, two of them become the bad guys. One is either neutral or the "good cop". They told me that I had one minute to discuss anything, and that my entrance into the College of Law would depend on that one minute. I was also attacked because they said I was too old (I was 23 when I applied and enrolled).

I think they're implementing the new 200 out of 301 rule to minimize the mortality rate.

Also, isn't that Haydee Yorac question an urban legend? 'Cause I heard that it goes like this:

Haydee: Do you think I'm beautiful?
Interviewee: Uh..(pause)............yes?
Haydee: Too late! Your answer took too long!

And then fireworks.

Good luck to all who passed and see you in the hallowed halls of Malcolm! Visit www.UPLSG.com! (Plugging. Hehehe.)

@nick_stokes_27

Hmmm... would happen to have a degree from a certain DAC? :D
Anyway, I have heard of that urban legend. And, if my memory serves me right, it went like this:

HY: Do you think I'm beautiful?
Interviewee: *pauses for some time*... Yes...
HY: No good! You took too long to answer.

He he That's the great Haydee Yorac for you! :))

Anyway, assuming they'd let me choose the topic I would like to talk about, what kinds of topic would you suggest? Somebody told me I should stick to trivial matters (but I'm sure they have ways of literally complicating things) :D. Thanks!

The one you're most comfortable with. They'll throw curved balls at you. One jerk said his only hobby was reading so they asked him to explain the plot and main conflict of War and Peace. Another said he likes to read about World War 2 so they asked him to explain the events that led to the Pearl Harbor attack. Probably the most bizarre was one guy who liked guns. So he and one interviewer spent 20 minutes discussing the merits of the AK-47. Get it? Don't expect a quiz show. They want to see what you're made of.

Good luck.

At the end of the interview, most likely you'll be asked "Give us one reason why we should not accept you in UP Law." if you're stupid you'll give one. I did and got accepted anyway.

haha dali, isip-isip!

^ haha that's how i would have answered it myself. buti sana kung nahuhulog lang galing langit yung acceptance letter, eh pinaghirapan ko rin yun. baka kung sinabi ko pang ibibigay ko yung slot, ang dating pa nun sa panel eh i don't really want it that badly. baka di pa tuloy ibigay sakin.

pero may blockmate ako, sumagot na ibibigay na lang daw nya. depende siguro talaga kung pano mo ikakatwiran yung sagot mo tsaka kung gaano ka ka-confident sumagot.

^^ no idea since i haven't taken the real LSAT. but i did an LSAT sample exam once before taking the lae. it was about as difficult.

So there's 3 parts as well?

Reading/Comprehension

Logic/Analysis

and

Games

When I took the LSAT in 1995, the Games part was the hardest.

@1800pinoyjobs
No. The LAE comprises six parts: Abstract Reasoning, Critical Thinking (Logical Thinking), Verbal Reasoning (Vocabulary), Language Comprehension, Numerical Ability, and Essay.

I've seen LSAT reviewers and I found LSAT generally tougher than the LAE. Will expound on this later (I need to go to class. he he)

How are classes graded at UP Law? Do they use a strict grading system (A to F or 1 to 5) or more of a "mellow" grading system like Harvard or Stanford (something similar to "high pass" "mid pass" "low pass"? Are there strict quotas re the number of top grades to be awarded per class? Do professors mostly employ the Socratic method or is that relegated mostly to required/core classes? Are there OCI (On Campus Interview) programs to help law firms recruit students?

Sorry, my interest just got piqued by this thread. Although I have NO DESIRE to relive law school (just like Hell Week, going through it ONCE is enough :D) but this thread piqued my interest in the possible differences between Philippine and American law school experiences.

Salamat pala sa feedback, I know all these would come in handy come the interview.

All law schools apply the Socratic method.

All law schools apply the Socratic method.

Not really. Lower-tier schools in the USA (definitely in California) have dispensed with the Socratic method in favor of Bar/Bri-esque instructions aimed at getting their students to pass the "baby bar" and the full bar itself.

I actually enjoyed the Socratic Method because

a) it forces students to think quickly on their feet
b) it allows students to think in terms of elements (legal and factual--one change in the factual scenario or one change in the legal elements can change the discourse)
c) it forces people to get used to speaking to a fairly large crowd of strangers (fellow law students)
d) (depending on the professor), it forces students to think about the conflicting social policies inherent in the law. I particularly enjoyed the "Law and Economics"/efficiency arguments by Professor Richard Posner and his fellow travelers.

With that said, the Socratic Method's usefulness in relation to passing the Bar isn't readily apparent. It is an academic tool (emphasis on academe). As a PRACTICAL tool to passing that grueling 3 day (California Bar) exam, it falls short. That's why some law schools (both ABA accredite and non-ABA accredited) are using a more practical (ie., pass the bar!) approach.

Will expound on this later (I need to go to class. he he)

@paralusi
I've heard of that! So funny yet so creepy! :D

does that mean na if i generally do well in the reviewers then there is actually a chance that i will be able to do well in LAE? hehe sana.. :D

Of course, that would depend on what reviewers you're using. ;)

Remember that LAE has some parts not in the LSAT - Math, Abstract Reasoning, and Vocabulary (I think). I would actually (virtually, too  ) suggest using GMAT and GRE reviewers for the Critical Thinking, Language Proficiency and Math parts; and UPCAT reviewers for the Vocabulary part.

And oh, I don't think LSAT reviewers would be of any help.

@nick_stokes_27

Hmmm... would happen to have a degree from a certain DAC?

Thanks!

Wahaha! Yep. Whoever you are, you figured out who I am in the real world. How you did it, I'll just have to find out for myself.

Lumabas na ang sked for interviews.

Don't go into the interview thinking you can dictate what the topic will be. Go in there with no expectations, stay calm and keep your composure. Almost a year after, I can officially say it: walang sinabi ang interview sa pamatay na recit. :rotflmao:

Your plugging of the LSG website gave you away. ;)
I frequent peyups, too, you see. He he. And, I don't mean to sound like a stalker, but I think I saw over at school around 2 weeks ago with Burn (or was it Sir Beaver?). LOL.

Thanks, ha, for taking the time to answer my questions. And the insights you and other peyups peeps shared were very helpful for my LAE preparation. It really helps that you know what you'll be facing; and that you prepare well. That said, my sincerest gratitude to you, Sir, and the others. The best way, I think, I can repay you guys is by helping those who'll be taking the LAE, just like you did.

I'm jittery and all; my anxiety's killing me already. With 66% chances of finally getting admitted to THE law school, from a very small fraction of a percent, the dream seems to be so near yet so far.

Any more tips?

Let me also add: walang sinabi ang graded recitations kumpara sa pamatay na Bar.
