Most Pinoys will take the Cebu Pacific flight on December 26 (10pm), so if you want to exterminate a significant amount of debaters in one go, try sabotaging that flight.

I was about to post the same thing! (I'm still quietly fuming over the SEAG).

But take my word for it - the Thais will never be able to beat Pinoys in any form of debate. Ever. Ang kalaban dito ng mga Pinoy, mga Australians at mga Brits at mga Candians.

No need to worry about that. ;)

But yeah, I'll wear my 2005 Sea Games shirt for the first day.

This is how the WUDC works:

There will be 400 teams competing. This is probably the biggest Worlds ever in terms of number of participants.
There will be nine preliminary rounds - three rounds per day from December 29 through 31.
The format is British Parliamentary. That means each round will feature four teams (opening government, opening opposition, closing government and closing opposition). The best team gets 3 points, second gets 2 points, third gets 1 point and the last placed team gets zero for that particular round.
The tournament follows the power matching rule - i.e. you will be facing teams with more or less the same score as your team has. If your aggregate score after the first three rounds is seven, it's very likely that your opponents also have 7 points. This makes it harder to win consecutively because a win almost always guarantees tougher opposition for the next round.

THE BREAK ROUNDS

The top 32 teams will advance to the BREAK ROUNDS (think NBA playoffs). I think only three Philippine institutions have made it to the breaks. Ateneo de Manila's strongest performance came courtesy of Eleanor Uy and Jess Lopez when they reached the semifinals a few years back. UP Diliman also had its share of success when Sir Martin Cortez and Carl Ng reached the quarterfinals. I'm pretty sure that UST has made it to the breaks at one point or another, but I think that was almost a decade ago. UP Manila came close during the 2006 Worlds when Aloy Domingo (now an M.D.) and Chrysanthus Herrera (now UPM's USC Chairperson) finished 36th.
The top teams are given incentive for finishing on top. The bracketing is as follows (1 v 16 v 17 v 32), ( 2 v 15 v 17 v 31)....
Only the first and second-ranked teams per round are allowed to proceed to the next round.
By simple math, you can derive that one needs to be in the top two from the octofinals (top 32), quarterfinals (top 16) and semifinals (top 8) to get to the finals (top 4). No Filipino has made it to this level. There's a big chance of this happening this year, though.

HOW ARE ROUNDS JUDGED

Rounds are judged by adjudicators - representatives from the same competing schools. They base their decisions on matter, manner and method.
Adjudicators are screened via an adjudication exam at the start of the tournament. The system follows a nominal ranking. An adjudicator can be assigned as a chair adj, a panelist or a trainee. Better adjudicators are also reserved for the "higher" rounds - i.e. rounds with better teams. Ergo, if your team keeps losing, the chances of getting CRAPPY adjudicators are high.
Can cheating occur? Well, of course it can! But the system has checks and balances. As much as the WUDC is a competition for debaters, it is also a competition for adjudicators. Debaters give feedback forms after every round to signify whether or not they agree with their adjudicators decision. These scores are also factored in when deciding where the adjudicator goes after that round.
It's TOUGHER to break as an adjudicator. Only the top 6% will break - compared to 8% for debaters. So if a team gives you low scores, your dreams of going far will be over quickly.

THE OTHER BREAK ROUNDS

Aside from the main break, the competition also features other brackets.
MASTERS: This round is for dinosaurs and living fossils. It's the supposed All Star game.
ENGLISH as SECOND LANGUAGE - ESL: This is for countries like us! Though there has been talk to disqualify us from this bracket because the Philippines has been dominating this competition like crazy.
ENGLISH as FOREIGN LANGUAGE - E-For-L: Self-explanatory, right?
Public Speaking - I heard they throw stuff at people when they don't find that person funny enough.

If I am not mistaken, it was Carl Ng and Nicolo Cabrera who broke for UP Diliman in Worlds, Faaip. And you're right, Durden, Leloy and Glen broke 32nd and Sharms and Chars broke 19th 2 years ago in Ireland. Leloy has already broken twice in Worlds. The first time was in his freshman year when he teamed up with Jess. I am almost sure that UST has made the breaks before. I'm just not sure if it was during Franco Larcina's time or it was during the time of Ricky dela Cruz.

The best finish of any Philippine team in the World DEbates was when Ateneo's Jess Lopez and Len Uy made the semifinals of Worlds in 2004. No Asian team has won Worlds. The best finish of an Asian team was when RK and Amit of Singapore made the finals a few years back(in 2002, if I am not mistaken).

Malaysia hosted last week a tourney called WUPID, which was a competition in preparation for this week's World Debates. Ony 40 teams from the top debate countries with debaters who have made the breaks in Worlds before were invited. Sharms and Leloy joined the tournament and they broke 3rd. They went on to reach the semis and Sharms was named 10th Best Speaker of the competition.I hope this is an indication of how well they will do in this week's World Debates, although this time Sharms will be teaming up with Chars and Leloy will be with Miko.

Goodluck to you, Faaip, and all the other Philippine debaters there in Bangkok right now.

Heck, no team from Asia broke!

I was the last Filipino for the Public Speaking competition (I survived rounds 1 and 2), but I guess I wasn't charming enough to go through after the semifinals.

2009 worlds - Cork, Ireland
2010 worlds - It's a toss up between Botswana, Singapore and Turkey. For obvious reasons, the Philippines will vote for Singapore as top priority. Jess Lopez will be CA if NTU wins the bid.

Sharms and Chars finished 34th. Only the top 32 teams made the breaks. Its rather weird that no Philippine team, or no Asian team for that matter, made the breaks this year. Not to say that it is easy to break in Worlds. But Phil debaters are good enough to match up with the top teams in the world, as proven in previous international competitions. If you ask me, at least two teams from Ateneo and probably a couple of teams from both UP Diliman and UP Manila are world class teams capable of beating the heck out of other teams. I'd have expected at least 1-2 teams from Singapore and Malaysia to break. The fact that the Worlds this year was hosted by an Asian school should have helped the cause of Asian teams.

Truth be told, and this is something people know but refuse to talk about publicly in international debate circles, a lot of the adjudication in Worlds involve how much a team is known, and the color of one's skin. I recall a comment Sharms and Chars got from a white adj before who made them lose in a debate in Ireland. The adj told them " For an Asian team, you speak pretty well and you're pretty good". This by no means is an isolated incident. I'm not really into the whole conspiracy theory thing, but RK, the 1st Asian to make the Worlds finals, is this year's CA. The least he could have done was give top Asian teams fair adjes, and not those who are publicly known racist adjes...unless RK never wanted any Asian team to match his achievement.

Though I know a lot of Pinoy teams have been screwed, the Worlds has been a learning experience for me and my teammate. I think we only got unfairly adjudicated once - as opposed to two, three or even four times like some other teams I know. My team probably finished with 13 or 14 points (not sure because the last three rounds were silent).

The Philippines (along with schools from Singapore and Malaysia) was also removed from the ESL bracket. Yeah, we're relatively better than the other Asian countries when it comes to speaking in English but it's quite clear that some people *cough* *cough* still think that the way we speak, our inflections, heck our accents are still not as good as those of the Irish, Australians, Americans or Kiwis. Ergo, they think we're good enough to beat Asians

Here's a really interesting story:

My team was at 8 points (out of a possible 18) after the first six rounds. By that time, most of the Pinoy teams were out of contention or were teetering on the verge of elimination (you need 19 points to break for sure). A handful of teams with 18 will break - but those would only include teams with HIGH speaker scores.

ADMU: ADMU B started HOT with 11 out of a possible 12 in the first four rounds. ADMU A was also still alive after 2 days of competition. ATENEO A - Square Off Champs Sharmila and Chars. ATENEO B - Leloy and Mico.

UPD: All three UPD teams had 9 points each. All teams had to sweep the final 3 rounds with first place finishes and then HOPE that their speaker scores will be enough to get them through to the next round. UPD A - Claire and Mels. UPD B - Anna and Aaron. UPD C - Yang and Inna.

UPM: UPM B (my team) and UPM C only had 8 and 6 points at the end of 6 rounds, so 18 was already out of reach with three rounds to go. UPM A on the other hand had 11 points. UPM A - Yves Aquino and Adrian Rabe, MD.

Other Philippine teams were either already eliminated by DAY 2's end or had their backs against the wall to win ALL the remaining rounds to even have a shot at breaking.

----

Here's the sad part.

ATENEO A and ATENEO B faced each other in ROUND 8! :( That event alone removed the possibility of having two ATENEO teams in the break.

----

Here's THE WEIRD PART:

Perhaps reflecting how bad the tabs were... My team UP Manila B faced Auckland A, Alaska A and Alberta C. That made me think that we won Round 7. After all, we reached a strong room. But here's the weird part - THE TEAMS WERE MIND NUMBINGLY GOOD!

Of course, this was a good thing because I'd rather face GREAT debaters that just face typical opposition. My team was already out of the running and losing another round would not really make any difference, right? My teammate and I saw it as a learning experience.

In matchups, you're supposed to face teams with scores similar to your own. Assuming we won Round 7, we would have had 11 points - AND ALL THE OTHER TEAMS IN THAT ROOM HAD 11 points as well (extending the logic further, those three teams are already out of the running as well). LO AND BEHOLD.... AUCKLAND C had 15 POINTS entering the round!!!

How can a team with 11 and 15 points find themselves in the same room?! Sure, it didn't hurt my team - heck, I loved the fact that I had the chance to debate against a team that could very well be the next Worlds Champions, but WTF, right?!

Auckland A BROKE 7th at.... 21 points.

:BOP: :BOP: :grrr:

----

If anything, I like the fact that the Philippine grew closer together. People who don't usually talk to each other were wishing each other good luck during prep time and were giving other teams comfort when they feel screwed with crappy and 'rasista' (props to the DLSU contingent for this) adjudication. It was great celebrating new year's eve with the Philippine contingent - it was cool to jump up and down Pinoy style after the countdown was over. We were a group of young people who nothing else but each other in Thailand.

On a much lighter note,

The guys also got to play basketball A LOT. I didn't know that a lot of Pinoy debaters shot hoops - and actually PLAYED WELL. *peace* Shoutouts to the guys from DLSU, CSB, Mapua and SBC. We played almost nightly against the other basketball freaks in the tournament - mostly from Thailand, Malaysia and Bangladesh . Bringing a basketball to Assumption U was definitely a great idea.
---

Here were the motions.

Round 1: TH would allow torture. - WTF ADJ CORE!!! YOU SUCK!

Round 2: THBT the time for Taiwan to declare independence is now - WTF ADJ CORE?! DID YOU TAKE THE MOTIONS FROM THE LAST CENTURY?!

Round 3: TH would not allow local governments to pay for the relocation of the homeless.

Round 4: This House believes that the European Union should only direct aid to nations that pursue environmentally sustainable development.

Round 5: This House believes that every criminal defendant should be required to use a government provided defense lawyer.

Round 6: This House would subject foreign political contributions to greater restrictions than domestic contributions.

ROUND 7: THIS HOUSE WOULD ASSASSINATE VLADIMIR PUTIN.
AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, THE LONE RUSSIAN TEAM WAS CLOSING GOVERNMENT IN OUR ROUND!!! :rotflmao:

Round 8: This House believes that governments should never rescue failing private industry.

Round 9: TH would deny terminally ill patients access to scarce medical resources - Ok, this isn't the exact wording, but this is essentially what was the motion called for.

I would have to agree with the conspiracy thing going on. There's really something fishy with this year's competition. As far as I know, since the first time that Sharms joined the Worlds, she's been making the breaks.

Anyway, I hope that next year teams from the Philippines will make one hell of a comeback lols! I also hope that Ateneo would finally reach the finals - the sooner the better! Go Ateneo hehe!

Sharms has made the breaks of Worlds just once. This was two years ago in Dublin when she teamed up with Chars. She missed the breaks last year in Canada where she and Chars ranked 34th. 3 years ago, Sharms and Glen made the ESL breaks. As far as I know, only Lel and Jess have made the breaks of Worlds twice(correct me if I'm wrong on the last info).

^^ I see. Sorry my bad. Thanks for the additional info :) Nonetheless, ADS has proven that it is a force to reckon with not just in the Asian region but in the World arena as well.

kamusta naman ang racist adjudicator na nakuha nina Sharmila at Chars nung round 6! Seriously, a 69?! A 69 for the best speaker in Asia?

Ang daming kwento na binababaan yung scores ng mga Pinoy (kinukuwento ng mga trainee adjudicators na kasama nung panel). Lyceum got screwed at least once by this.

And come on, a 56 for Adrian Mundin? I haven't debated against this guy yet but a 56 is meant for someone who can't finish his sentences. Finishing 7 minutes should be worth at least 70, in my book.

I was lucky enough to get good adjudicators for most of my rounds, I guess.

Sharms was seething over the score they got in round 6 from the racist British adj. You're right, faaip. There is no way Sharms and Chars can get a 69 from any adj with half a brain, unless of course there was malice involved. This is the 1st time in Sharms's celebrated debate career she got that low a mark. And to think in this same tournament, she got scores in the high 80s in other rounds. I'm sure this also happened to some other debaters from the Philippines. Which is a pity since I am sure all the debaters from the Philippines prepared long and hard for this year's Worlds. After all, it was held in Asia, which should have at least made the adjudication fair. Also, most of them spent big bucks, probably from their own pockets, to join the competition. A pity, really. Sharms said even the Singaporeans are pissed at RK, who either didn't want Asian teams to do well to ensure no one matched what he has achieved in Worlds or is just another Asian white-guy wannabe who kowtowed to the Western powers-that-be. It was like a sick joke that motions in the elims seemed too 1st world and Western, while during the breaks when no Asian team was in the running, the motions that came our were more relevant to Asian countries.

Here's a knock against the Gavin Illsley (The Adj Who Gave 69s) conspiracy theory.

He gave Joan Zaldivar and Cyris Aquino above average scores for round 2. The low scores could've been given not because they were from the Philippines but because Ateneo is a rival of his institution in Australs. Who knows...

How I became the last Pinoy in the Public Speaking Competition

Actually, the 70-79 range in worlds is considered average, while 60-69 is below average, and 80-89 is above average.

So while in the Philippines, anyone who speaks for seven minutes deserves more than 69, it's very much possible for someone who spoke for seven minutes to still get 69 and below.

Regarding Gavin Illsey, in as much as he gave me terrible scores as well, the "rival institutions" idea at Australs holds no water whatsoever, because Gavin Illsey is from the Oxford Union, which doesn't really participate at Australs.
