The National Finalists chosen from the Area Stage (Nov. 24) are out.

List of said finalists in http://mathsci.math.admu.edu.ph/pmo/index.html

Nagbago na ang format from a few years ago. Definitely much more challenging questions (there's a link to the questions on the same webpage).

Wow... exciting. Who will win this year?

I browsed on the sample questions... some, I've encountered already before on MTAP competition.

More power to PMO *okay*

One thing though, No MaSci as finalist this year?

i agree p1215.
pwede mong i-argue siguro na kung magaling ka talaga, then you shouldn't be careless. pero di mo rin maiiwasan na maging careless. kung malasin ka, sayang nga, lalo na kung may potential ka pa naman for deep mathematical thinking.

hahaha, pmo division level ng 1994-1995 :glee: did you take it as a junior or a senior? junior ako nun.

if i may just share, that set off a lot of things into motion. sa division namin, nung highest lang dapat ang ipapadala. eh dalawa kami (taga-xavier nung isa, i remember), so dalawa kaming lusot sa regional. anyway, we both ended up sa top 5 ng individual national, and to cut a long story short, nakasali ako sa international math olympiad eventually. all because i was encouraged by my pmo performance (i thought, may talent naman ako kahit paano). i eventually decided to study math, teach math, and right now, i'm doing my math grad studies here in the us.

tapos ngayon, i can't help but think, what if naka-39/40 ako dun sa unang division screening? that could have been the end of the road for me. i might not have given a second look to math as a field of study (i could have gone on to an engineering course instead). all because of 1 point. kinikilabutan pa rin ako minsan talaga :glee:

la_flash and arjunathory, masci ba kayo? baka wala na nung mga nagta-train kasi. last march, na-meet ko sa new york nung math coach ng masci nung high school ako. nagtuturo sa math honors class ng isang high school dun. nung high school math coach ko rin kasi nasa new york na rin (:glee:), at kilala niya nung masci coach. baka walang pumalit. nung math coach ng xavier school nung time ko, nasa us na rin, pero di ko alam kung nasaan siya rito.

Gawd.

Myrich Lim
Sumulong Memorial High School

I remember my former schoolmate's stories about this boy.

Actually ngayon ko lang naalala ang tungkol sa kanya because the school he represents caught my eye. It's is in our city and I had a number of acquaintances who studied there.

Wow, this is the national level! Hey, I have to let this sink in first. Hehe. The school, SMHS, over which I thought my school is (was) superior, is bannered here. Fortunately for them, may estudyante silang ganun. :P

But my support is for them, hehe.

I also had my share of inter-school Math competitions kaso di naman ako nag-a-advance sa next rounds.

Anyway, good luck to all the national finalists!

I believe that there was a study before that males are better in mathematics than females. Wala lang.

la flash, awww. wag kang magpapaniwala sa mga naririnig mo, hahaha. yeah, i also won my share, but that was a long time ago. also, i feel we've been in the same room before... probably in some math contest from last century, hehehe.

i think this male-female dichotomy is the same as the chinese-non-chinese one, that it's all environmentally influenced. but still, it's nice to see a girl win this one (two girls at that in the top three). before the Philippines' participation in the international math olympiad this year (with Stephanie as one of our reps), the last time we had a girl represent our country was 1996 (a looooong time ago).

kung may male advantage man, it's just a matter of predisposition siguro.

@la_flash: Ikaw naman, hehe. Thanks. 1996 ako nakagraduate ng high school. Ikaw, anong batch ka?

@Noodles_Oblique: Sa Spain ang next IMO. Sana may financial support pa ring makuha kasi mas mahal ang pamasahe siyempre que sa Vietnam nung 2007. Kahit Vietnam lang, hindi pa nasagot ng buo ng DOST ang airfare ng lahat at kailangan pa ng support from other private entities. Siyempre, sana may honorable mention at least.

Ano kaya ang kakaibang ginagawa ng Thailand (2 Golds+3Silvers+1Bronze)? Mas maganda ang performance nila compared to Vietnam this year.

2004: #35

2006: #15
2007:#14
2008:#6

Anong nangyari dun?

Galing.

Dapat talaga masaya tayo dahil may bronze na uli tayo after 13 years.

May mantra sila "2months bronze, 7 months silver, 12 months gold".

Based on four exams, magtitira sila ng 10. Monday to Friday 8 am to 5 pm ang theory training. Saturday 8 am to 5 ang experimental training. Sunday ang exams.

Yung last 10 nila tuloy-tuloy ang training mula mid November 2007 hanggang last week of January 2008 except for christmas to new year. Ang coverage ng training ay

2 weeks review of mechanics (David Morin)
1 week relativity
1 week thermo
2 weeks optics and waves
1 week modern and nuclear physics
1 week solid state
1 week review of EM (may MIT textbook sa Course 8.02)

At the end of january, magiging 8 na lang yung sampu.

After APhO ano ang ginagawa nila?

This year disappointed sila dahil 2 Golds+2Silvers+1Bronze lang sila.

@kalteck: Do you have a way of contacting Jerome Khohayting? I've been asked by the RP IMO Team Leader this year to help him seek out former RP IMO contestants (not just Jerome).

@p1215 and physicist: What's APhO? Asian Physics Olympiad?

Nakakainggit ang Thailand ngayon. Yung Vietnam, talagang expected na ang level of performance nila. Pero sa Thailand ako nagugulat ngayon. I remember mga a little more than ten years ago, pantay ang Pilipinas at Thailand sa IMO, pero nagsisimula nang umusad ang Thailand. Ngayon, talagang naiwan na tayo. :mecry:

Di ko na naabutan this year yung marami pa sila (nung na-meet ko sila, down to the 3 RP contestants na). Pero nung marami pa sila at nasa preliminary stages pa lang ng selection, I heard nag-Baguio pa sila for stay-in sessions.

Pero surprise yung good showing ng Thailand across the board (i.e.Physics, Math, Chemistry, Biology, Informatics etc.)

Charismatic at napaka entrepreneurial. On any given weekend may 2000 students sa tutorial centers niya all over Indonesia.

Maaga mag-cut kaya walang stage na more than four ang trainees simula 1999.

Unlike APMO, you have to fly to the competition site because the competition has theoretical and experimental exams. Yung 8 APhO participants nila mag-aagawan sa last 3 IPhO slots.

Do you have a way of contacting Jerome Khohayting? I've been asked by the RP IMO Team Leader this year to help him seek out former RP IMO contestants (not just Jerome).

Alabastro probably knows how to contact Jerome's dad. They were contemporaries in UP Diliman Chem Engg in the late 1950's.

I don't know the scores, but if I were to guess who among our national IMO reps have scored the highest, I'd say Jerome Khohayting. Siya pa lang ang nakaka-silver medal kasi. Batiller didn't get a medal.

(Scores are out of a possible perfect score of 42.)

IMO Year/Name/Score/Percentile Rank/Award
1989 Jerome Suntay Khohayting 33 83.79 Silver medal

yup, i agree that we should move away from the notion that computational skills are the primary measure of mathematical ability. problem solving and analytic skills are more important. that's why i'm happy with the change in the style of recent pmo questions.

Maganda talaga educational system ng Thailand, they are really serious about meeting global standards in education.
