Ateneo is CHED Center of Excellence in Business Administration and Entrepreneurship

The Ateneo de Manila University was recently designated as a Center of Excellence (COE) in both Business Administration and Entrepreneurship by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The designation of the university as Center of Excellence came about after a thorough review of the business and management programs in the Ateneo's John Gokongwei School of Management by the Technical Panel for Business and Management Education. The panel's recommendation was approved by the CHED during its special meeting in October.

In a letter addressed to Ateneo President Bienvenido F. Nebres, SJ, CHED Chairman Romulo L. Neri thanked Nebres and the Ateneo for their participation in the COE Program and congratulated them on their achievement.

This brings to 11, the current number of CHED Centers of Excellence in the Ateneo. The other centers of excellence are Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Literature, Philosophy, English, Psychology and Sociology. Ateneo also has two CHED Centers of Development – Information Technology Education and Environmental Science.

The awards ceremony will be held on Dec. 7, 2007, 9 a.m., at the Crown Regency Hotel in Makati City.

To date that makes the Ateneo the only COE in Business Administration and Entrepreneurship.

Let's hope there will be other Philippine universities that will make it as COEs and CODs. *okay*

Congratulations to The Ateneo again!:) I have been feeling so happy since yesterday. haha.
Subalit COE ba ang Biology? Datapwat IT a COD? Where's Environmental Science, with a 100% compliance? Diba COD rin ito? haha:D Think I'm not updated.

Pero see and read: "The Ateneo de Manila University was recently designated as a Center of Excellence (COE) in both Business Administration and Entrepreneurship by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)."

I'm impressed by the awarding of COE particularly since I know JGSOM does not offer graduate studies in business administration and entrepreurship. Ateneo's MBA is handled by the graduate school of business, not by JGSOM.

Question: are there other schools that are CODs in Entrepreneurship? Is Entrepreneurship a separate category from Business Administration as implied in the above post?

That's correct. AdMU JGSOM received two COE recognitions: one for Business Administration and another one for Entrepreneurship. Prior to this, AdMU had a total of 9 COEs. The recent awards have brought that total up to 11.

Yes, entrepreneurship is a separate category from BA, that is according to the CHED website. They both fall under the business and management field.

Below are the Area/Programs a school can apply for recognition as COE or COD:

- Accountancy
- Commerce, Business Administration or Management
- Customs Administration
- Entrepreneurship
- Hotel and Restaurant Management or Hospitality Management
- Office Administration or Office Management
- Tourism

ok naman kasi ang training and currirculum sa jgsom eh. there's the som-mall project, junior term abroad, among other things.

*peace*

i think the main reason why UP was not qualified for the COE application is because they don't have the necessary accreditation from any of the accrediting organizations (ex: PAASCU)

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) started a quest for excellence in business and management education in 2007 by inviting business schools all over the country to apply for recognition as Centers of Excellence – a designation reserved for colleges that have “exhibited an excellent ability to produce quality business and management professionals relevant to the needs of the industry, to conduct research that contributes to the body of knowledge in the field, and to engage in extension services that contribute to national development.”

At the end of a year-long process of evaluation and review, CHED’s search culminated in finding not one, but two Centers of Excellence: one in Business Administration, and another in Entrepreneurship, but both in the same school--- the John Gokongwei School of Management (JGSOM) at the Ateneo de Manila University. Thus far, of the more than 1,500 schools overseen by CHED, JGSOM is the only school that has met the stringent requirements for designation as a CHED Center of Excellence in any of its seven fields of business education.

Explaining the extra-ordinarily tough criteria and the stringent evaluation process that CHED used in evaluating which schools could be recognized as a Center of Excellence, Dr. Oscar Torralba, the head of the CHED Technical Panel, quotes Browning: “A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s heaven for?”

“We have to raise the bar,” continues Dr. Torralba, “if we are to develop graduates that are globally competitive. Our graduates should be as good as, if not better, than our peers around the world, because we all now realize that we are no longer isolated from the rest of the global market. CHED’s vision for Philippine business education is anchored on 3 themes: global competitiveness, market responsiveness, and IT-enablement. Our schools should, at the very least, be compliant with these 3 themes.”

However, being merely compliant has never been the goal of JGSOM and its hard-working Dean, Rudy Ang. As early as 2002, when JGSOM was launched, the school had already committed itself to a vision of becoming “a regionally recognized center of excellence and leadership in undergraduate business education, shaping its students into business leaders who are equipped to respond to the needs of tomorrow’s world.”

With this vision came the determination to implement and to deliver the goods. Aggressive recruitment, coupled with rigorous selection, has resulted in an impressive undergraduate student body. In 2006, over 4,200 high school students competed for the 750 slots in its freshman class for June, 2007. Of the 767 students who eventually made it, an impressive 24%, or one out of every four, had graduated with high school honors (including 31 high school valedictorians).

The assembly of intelligence and talent in the school is further honed by a first-rate faculty line-up that combines world class academic training with top-tier professional experience. “Our faculty hold advanced degrees from some of the most prestigious business schools in the world, including Harvard, Yale, Northwestern, and Wharton” says Dean Rudy Ang. “On top of that, many of them have held, or continue to hold top management, including CEO positions in some of the country’s largest corporations. They offer our students an excellent balance of academic training and senior management experience, providing them with the dual perspectives of theory and practice when faced with important business decisions.”

The formula of raw talent honed at the hands of seasoned faculty, of academic research peppered with real life insights, seems to be working well for JGSOM graduates. In the graduating class of 2005, for example, one graduate was offered a starting salary of P150,000 a month to work in the local office of a multinational consulting company. Other graduates, fresh out of college, received even higher offers to work outside the country.

JGSOM’s focus on creating world-class professionals and entrepreneurs is consistent with CHED’s aim of developing Filipinos who will be able to face the challenges the world has to offer. “The best protection for the Philippines in a globally competitive world,” CHED’s Dr. Torralba points out, “is not to put up walls, but to enable our own graduates, by giving them the competencies, skills, and standards that are at par with no less than the best schools in the world. We want to encourage the drive for excellence in our schools. Our culture values quality education and education is a great equalizer. You may not be as rich as the other people when you enter school, but if you study well in a reputable school, then the path to success should be open to you.”

Although Dr. Torralba is hopeful that a few other schools will eventually be able to also earn recognition as Centers of Excellence in business education, right now, only Ateneo’s John Gokongwei School of Management has been able to fit the bill.:)

I really think na sa BAA (Accountancy) ang strength ng UPCBA. Hindi pa ba COE in Accountancy ang UPCBA? Well, the Best naman talaga ang business courses ng AdMU. I really hope, other schools do better to get the COE disctinction not just in BA and Entrepreneurship, but in all other fields.

Well ang narinig ko, parang nadismaya yung admin dun sa reqts ng CHED. For example, parang at least daw 50% sa accountancy boards for example para to qualify or something to that effect ang isang school. Ang naging reaction nila was not to join. Ewan ko lang ha. Medyo malabo honestly. I mean, medyo siguro naman sure na pasok CBA ng Diliman maging COE in Accountancy for one. The college has won the ACPACI tournament every year except last year's. Marami namang topnotchers and mataas passing rates (90+). Kahit sa ibang fields din under the CHED COE for BA like BA, Tourism and HRIM hindi nagsubmit ang UP. Why the units didnt join is beyond me. Sayang din.

As for CBA, di lang naman Accountancy strength nung college. Mas malakas ang Marketing and Finance ng UP. The FINEX, PANA and Stratmark compet wins over the years attest to this. Ateneo's edge is really in Entrep. Developed na talaga yung curriculum and other facilities (like SOMBA). Ateneo dominates a wide range of compets din by companies. In any case, Dean Rudy Ang of Ateneo played a key role daw sa CHED COE for BA. From what I remember he was involved in the guidelines. But nothing sure, in passing ko lang kasi narinig.

It seems to me that these certifications (COE, etc) are sought after by schools to help them attract students. It also seems to me that UPCBA has no problems attracting students. It even has to turn away applicants. So why bother going through this process? Administrative resources can be used for other purposes.
