View Full Version : What's Christmas like abroad?

Do you still celebrate it the filipino way with Noche Buena, puto bumbong, and bibingka? Is Christmas wherever you are celebrated in a similar way to how it is celebrated here or is it more meaningful in the Philippines?

Dec 24, 2000, 09:17 AM
I try to celebrate it the same way, but it's hard... kase my family's not here... if they were here, it's probably more fun. Kaya lang, wala sila dito, so medyo malungkot.
I make my own version of bibingka. I don't know how to make puto bumbong. I miss simbang gabi =( and I miss my family (parents, siblings, cousins, and basta, yung buong pamilya!!) haaaaaaay... nakaka-homesick naman itong topic na ito.

Why, do you plan to celebrate Christmas abroad next year?

Next year, talagang uuwi ako sa Christmas! Yipee!

Here in Southern California it is pretty much the same as in Pinas especially for the Filipinos with big families here.
In some of the cities where there is a big concentration of Filipinos, there's simbang gabi here in some of the Catholic churches.
There's Goldilocks and Manila Sunset, Jollibees and a bunch of other Pinoy stores to get your kakanin, bibingkas and puto bumbongs and pinoy party foods.
BUT....the only thing I feel that is different is that during the actual day of December 25th, TAHIMIK NA TAHIMIK ang neighborhoods....everybody basically just goes to church, after that maybe the movies, then to their respective homes to eat and celebrate Christmas with families.
We have our share of carolers on days leading up to Christmas but pag Christmas day talaga it is very QUIET.

I think in Pinas, if I remember correctly, pag Christmas time talagang magulo and masaya pag sisimba and mga carolings marami....marami talagang tao na NAKATAMBAY sa labas. Dito theres nobody outside the neighborhoods at all pag Christmas Day. Sa States talagang malulungkot ka kung nagiisa ka lang at wala kang friends or family to celebrate Christmas.

So to the US Navy sailors or kababayans who do not have their big families with them abroad on Christmas, I pray you'll be with good friends to keep you company and PEX to keep you entertained...:) God Bless You :D

My relatives tell me that its freeeeeezzing cooold in some parts of the US right now. They said they'd do anything to escape the cold.

Here in Manila, the air is crisp in the mornings, very sunny during the day, and festive and magical at night. The best Christmas pa rin dito sa Philippines.

We try... we had noche buena kaninang 12 mn... we also went to church... no bibingka and puto bumbong though.
For me, it's more of a who you're with than where you are. Basta i'm with the people i love, oks na yun.

Cali4Nia is right on the money 'bout SoCal/LA Xmas - malungkot at tahimik - can't compare w/ Pasko in Pinas in every sense of how Pinoys celebrate. Have lived in LA many years - still long 4 Pinoy Pasko - last year we were in Pinas - was a blast - nag-reminisce na lang 'ko.

Simbang gabi is not d same as in Pinas, i.e. hindi sa madaling araw/midnite, but during evening/day Masses - my church did not even have a midnite Mass last nite - prob'ly 'cuz it's Sunday.

Spent Xmas eve/had dinner w/ friends - had international food fare, such as dimsum, Peking duck, homemade Soup #5 (@ least that's what my gf's hubby calls it - it's made w/ diced potatoes/tomatoes, white kidney beans, patang baka, parang patatim, ba - soooo good, can still taste it :) , pansit sotanghon/canton, baggette in spinach dip - cassava bibingka, mud pie, royal red velvet cake for dessert - made the dip & bibingka, btw - were major hits. :) Atsaka kuwentuhan/catching up lang.

Right now - my son & I are just chillin' - he's watching football & I'm web surfing. :) Weather is unseasonably sunny/warm - imagine, 76 degrees - p'ro chilly sa early AM?

Christmas pa rin here sa Cali kasi 6:53pm pa rin ng Dec. 25. This is actually my 7th Christmas here abroad and it's pretty much the same every year...totally not at all like the way we celebrate it back home. Medyo boring, kasi like one of you guys said, it's pretty much DEAD on Christmas day. SUPER TAHIMIK!! May Simbang Gabi rin pero it's in English pero yung songs, Tagalog. Last night, for the very first time...they actually sang a "Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit" during the Christmas Eve Mass!!! I think that was WAY cool!!!!

i spent a few christmases in ca with my family before. pero iba pa ren talaga ang pasko dto sa pinas. dto bawat bahay merong decors pero sa states...ang makulay na bahay alam mong pinoy ang nakatira. tahimik sa states. pero dto sa pinas talagang masaya.

i don't like celebrating chirstmas here in the east coast. it's pretty (white christmas, it's snowing) and i'm with family, pero i miss the kaguluhan, at ingay, and my friends, and the midnight sales, bibingka, simbang gabi, paputok, pahahagilap ng buko at the last minute, and all those other uniquely 'pinas happenings at christmastime. tama si cali4nia and the other guys, it's so quiet here at christmas, pati na rin new year. sobrang kainis. and IT'S SO DARN COLD HERE!!!!!:grrr: buti pa sa california, medyo parang 'pinas:(

hi! after reading all your comments on christmas, i've noticed only one person commented positively on spending christmas in the us. and hindi pa yun affirmative na comment. it was more like the place didn't matter but the people.
me and my two brothers are bound to go there next march for good. we're going to be staying in san fo. i'm actually kinda sad about leaving pinas. do you guys never really get over wanting to come back?!!

I think generally, the quality of life is better abroad.

But the quality of celebrating Christmas is better in the Philippines. We seem to experience happier Christmases when we are in our own country. Its probably because of the warmth, the beautiful traditions, the presence of relatives, the presence of our friends, the glittering houses and buildings and others.

It's a combination of all these factors.

...I recommend that you visit the thread in this forum "Trials and Experiences of Living Abroad" That should give you a fair idea from our perspective of what it would be like!! :)

Well, I live in a place where christmas is celebrated by the majority of the population as a public holiday rather than a celebration of the birth of christ or even the delivery of gifts by Santa Claus! Most people go away during Christmas here in Hong Kong. It is most festive in the churches and in the homes of Christian Families.

The rest of the local population this year went off back to China for the long weekend, causing horrifying scenes at the border crossings and in the airports!

For those who opted to stay, Christmas was a time of Rave and Club parties, full monty parties and all sorts of "Festive-go-lucky" events.

My only treat was a slice of Goldilocks Cassava Cake that I bought yesterday afternoon in the local Pinoy sari-sari store! (Yes, we do have one here in my district!) No puto bombom and the goodies! :(

Christmas here in London is very different from the Philippines...shempre the best pa din sa Pinas. Nung pasko, we attended the midnight mass which was at 12mn talga. So after that we had our noche buena with Filipino foods minus puto-bungbong and bibingka...tapos we opened our presents and our whole family did not sleep till 6 am. I'm lucky kase yung family namen nandito pero shempre miss ko yung mga pinsan at iba ko pang kamag-anak. Decoration-wise madami ding christmas decors lalo na pag-filipino, isa na kami doon pero i didn't feel the christmas spirit too much...wala lang. Last year I was in the Phils. with my brother, masaya kaya lang yung parents ko and my other brother was in London . Next december uuwi ulit kami and this time, lahat na kami..I can't wait

Sucks dude. But heck you'll get used to it. It sucks when compared to our Christmas in the Philippines, which is super cool like all the houses are tightly decorated and stuffs like that and you can feel the real thing, unlike here in SoCal, all you can do is either spend it with your family or go to Vegas or just go clubbing or cruisin or whatever but it sucks.

Christmas in the Philippines is hell of a lot better. IMO.

New year's eve sucked too.

Christmas here in the states is really lonely, specially if you live somewhere that is so cold ( I am speaking about 20 degrees with a wind chill of 8 degrees!). How I hate being cold! I really miss being back in Manila. Iba talga diyan ang Christmas. Here where I live in the east coast, walang simbang gabi. Maikli lang ang celebration ng Christmas dito and it is more focused on gift giving...sad but true. The spirit is more felt there sa Pinas talaga! We don't even have noche buena! We get together with all our relatives only during christmas day and have lunch together afterwhich bigayan and bukasan na ng gifts and for us na medyo bata pa eh we get aguinaldo. Iyun ang aming improvised christmas dinner :(

Last Christmas was my first away from home. I was kinda expecting it's gonna be bad but it turned out to be so much fun and memorable. Mum and I went to this Filipino party her friend is having and there were loads of Filipino food that I missed, like lechon, pancit and lumpiang shaghai. terwards, we went to Church (we're Protestant), and then everybody was hugging, saying "Merry Christmas", and giving each other poinsettias. It was pretty kewl. I felt like I was so much of the part of the scene. Then some Hispanic friends invited us for a Mexican-American Christmas dinner. They served up apple cider, tamales, chili, pecan pie, ham and the like. Even if it was barely above freezing and rainy over here at Houston, I felt warm--and for a second, I didn't get homesick about having Christmas back home in Manila.

if you grew up in the philippines, christmas anywhere else in the known universe would be very boring.

lalo na pag new year (walang napuputulan ng daliri, hehe).

but then again, maybe its just me.

Hey meex...Is there some kind of social code amongst Filipino families that if you already work you don't get any gifts? Like gift giving is only for the teeny boppers and below who are unemployed. Cuz that happened to me too...I got passed up during Christmas cuz I already worked...so UNFAIR...:bop:...wahhhhahhhhh...but I didn't work this year.....wahhhhahah:~(

I think Christmas can be different for everyone no matter where you are and it depends a lot on your family. My family has been in the states for about 32 years. We were just toddlers when we came and now we're all grown with jobs and families of our own but we've all remained very close. We not only get together for the holidays, but birthdays and anniversaries too. When my siblings and I were little, my parents did all the celebratory work, now that we're all grown, we all pitch in. Because we grew up here we don't always do things the Filipino way but whatever we decide to do we always have a good time. Every year we say 'you don't have to get the adults presents, just the kids'. But I can't do that and neither can anyone else so the piles of presents are so high that they overwhelm my 6 foot tree. We're not 'Rich' people but we all have steady jobs and we work hard for the things we have. Money or no money it's up to you if you want to make the holidays special or depressing.

I think celebrating christmas in our Country is the BEST of all the best christimas'.

Yes, you have the white christmas, but if they will give me enough money and vacation, every christmas uuwi ako.

iba pa rin sa atin talaga. For the first time, I guess, you'll love it here but after that... It's just any ordinary day. ma-de-depress ka pa kung nag-blizzard (like bagyo sa atin) dahil hanngang tatlong pulgada (3 feet) ang snow.

Kaya last christmas 2000, sa disney ang celebration!

regards,
jake

I spent this Christmas in Germany and New Year's in Austria.

In Germany, people eat this special skinless Christmas Frankfurter which is made only in Christmas time, on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Day, it is traditional to have roast Goose and Kartuffel Canoodle (some kind of potato dumpling, forgot the spelling).

It is kinda boring though.

In Austria, they had some fireworks but it wasn't spectacular. After the fireworks are over, people head straight to the bar and drink and get soooo drunk until morning. It's funny to see tipsy Austrians making their way home at 6:00 in the morning.

But nothing beats Christmas and New Year's in the Philippines.

It's one of those __ber months already, so you know x-mas is coming up. I love x-mas here in Canada, the snow makes all the lights stand out and look so pretty. And we have Boxing Days! But I still miss x-mas in the Philippines. The atmosphere's so different. There's more of a religious tone to it (mind you, I'm basically a non-practicing Catholic, but it's nice to be reminded once a year). I miss kutsinta. Parols. Those huge x-mas displays that they have on the office buildings in Makati. Midnight masses. All the kids getting money from titas and titos! The food!! I remember our neighbors would invite each other to their...what do you call those dinners on x-mas eve? Anyway, I've been here 8 years and I'm definitely up for pasko back home!

christmas in US is so materialistic.. puro gifts. hindi katulad sa 'pinas na maski walang regaluhan basta sama-sama. i guess we do that to make up for the lack of 'xmas spirit'.

obviosly widely celebrated paren ang new year and christmas here in the states, pero they pay more attention to the fourth of july, thanksgiving and halloween. para kasi on these occassions talagang the whole nation pauses and celebrates eh.

miss ko na talaga celebration sa pinas promise....hmmm.....puto bungbong :naughty2:

It's SeptemBER and we all know what that means... it's the start of the Christmas Season in beloved Pinas.

So, balik Pinas ba kayo this Christmas?

Make your plans now!! The Christmas balikbayan wave will be quite evident in November and climaxing in December when Manila and major cities and provinces will be teeming with balikbayans!

Spend Christmas 2002 in the Philippines and treat yourself to a TRULY HAPPY CHRISTMAS! After working hard for a year, you deserve it!

Pero malabo..kauuwi ko lang last April. Masyadong magastos. I already spend USD 5k during that period...Kaya utang na lang sa mga inaanak this december.

I really miss Christmas season in Pinas. Iba dito sa Holland, mas importante 'yong Santa Claus Day nila (1st week of Dec).

I miss...

1. Family (It's always nice to be with your love ones...napaka-warm ng feeling...lalo ngayong malalaki na kami, we look back and have a laugh)

2. Friends ( I can still remember after noche buena (Christmas) and media Noche (new year) gather kaming choir members in one of the house of our friend tapos sabay jamming...iba talaga)

3. Food (lahat ng makakain...sa bahay, sa kapit-bahay or kaibigan) after the season...dahil puro karne ang pagkain, kain naman ng seafoods...

4. Atmosphere - It reminds me, kapag pumatak na ang -ber, may christmas carol ka ng maririnig...tapos ang mga shopping malls starts to decorate...that was when I was young...siguro iba na ngayon.

I wish...I wish...I wish...

Although I got used to not celebrating Christmas anymore, (I just miss the feeling). Lalo na ngayon, I already have a child of my own...I hope someday, I can take him there during Christmas season...siguro next year if not this year...

Maligayang Pasko sa inyong lahat....
