She ranked #4 in the UAAP MVP Race last Season behind Bernal, Daquis and Balse. She was also invited by Coach August Santa Maria of UST to be part of the National Team but refused because of commitments. Right now, in V-League, she's #7 in the MVP Race. :D

nung game nila against Lyceum nanood ako sa The Arena...after nung game nag cr ako then pag labas ko nakita ko si Charo nag ootograph sa isang kid, sa pader pa nga niya pinirmahan eh...then naisip ko ilabas yung cell ko...pag daan ko sa kanya sbi "miss charo pede mag pa picture" sabi nya "sure" tapos tinapat ko na cell ko sa kanya ...e parang kinakabahan ako...kaya medyo natagalan sbi ko pa smile tapos ang cute ng smile niya talaga sobra sweet...nung na shot ko na...nag thank you ako...nag smile back pa siya...sa sobrang starstruck ko diko na save yung pic....bad trip na badtrip ako...pero ok lang may next time pa naman eh...parang ang gaan niyang i approach...diko lang alam sa ibang player....kaya si Charo Soriano ang isa sa mga fav player ko....:)

One advantage of Charo is that sometimes Bernal's the one who scores 20+ points, sometimes naman it's Balse. Although, of course, when against weaker teams, expect that she will be fielded less because Coach Ronald wants to train his other players in preparation for the Playoffs, Final Four or maybe even the championship. :)

Pero this early, she averages 25 points per game or 6 points per set.

Everyone should be contributing to Ateneo's game. Otherwise, nakakatakot. Baka ma-injure si Charo.

CHARO Soriano, the winsome Ateneo hitter, is Venus Bernal's biggest threat in extending her MVP reign in the UAAP women's volleyball tournament.

Soriano, who bannered the Thailand-trained Lady Eagles in winning three of their first four matches, took early lead in the scoring department.

Making a big impact in her last season for Ateneo, Soriano collected a total of 77 attacks, 11 blocks and three service aces to average 22.8 points per game.

The 22-year old Soriano topped the chart in digs with a 1.88 average per set and ranked third in the blocking department with 0.69 average per set.

Bernal placed second in scoring with 77 points, 69 coming from attacks, while Mary Jane Balse is in third place with 75. The 1-2 punch of the UST Tigresses led their team to a 4-0 start.

Tied for the fourth and fifth are Angela Benting of Adamson and Jackie Alarca of La Salle with similar 64 points.

Lady Archers standouts Celine Hernandez and Alarca are the league leaders in blocking with identical 0.94 average per set.

Adamson's Janet Serafica is the tournament's top setter with 11.13 average per set while Karla Bello of Ateneo is in second with 8.31.

Bello led the receiving department with an impressive 50-percent efficiency rating. Mervic Mangui of National University topped the service department with 0.50 average per set.

Women’s volleyball in the UAAP resumes on Jan. 9 at the Blue Eagle Gym in Katipunan, Quezon City.

We'll just have to pray that no injuries will hinder charo's way to get the mvp plum or any of the lady eagles because so far, they did pretty well during thier games. Hopefully, their level of game will be a notch higher come second round of uaap.

It was one of those days. How do you make sense of it much less explain it?

Without a doubt, the Ateneo Women’s Volleyball Team had a good practice the day before their first match of 2008 against the second running Adamson Lady Falcons. But on a day where they were supposed to put their best foot forward, it didn’t start out right.

Team Captain Karla Bello arrived late for the team’s call time at 830 and athletics officials thought that it was maybe best to bench her since as team captain she knew better than to be tardy for such an important game.

Maybe one can argue that may have distracted the team because they came out somewhat flat. Some opine that it was facing Adamson whom they have not beaten in years. Whatever the reason, the Lady Spikers were getting creamed. And to think they put up a better fight against the defending champions UST. Adamson was on the verge of sweeping Ateneo after taking the first two sets 25-14 and 25-13 when things got worse.

With the team unable to get into a rhythm in the first set, the coaching staff inserted Bello. If the damage was already done no one can say because they had difficulty stringing together points more so on their defense. And maybe Bello should have sat instead for in the third set the fifth year senior went down with an ankle injury. A few minutes later, Bea Pascual, after taking to the air for a twisting spike landed awkwardly and she let out a shriek of terrible pain. It took a few minutes to carry her off the court. With two of their starters down and out for the game (and in Pascual’s case maybe the rest of the season as she was initially diagnosed with an ACL injury), coach Ronald Dulay called for time to gather his bewildered team’s wits. It worked because the team rallied and played harder and nearly took the third set before falling 25-22.

After the game even the Adamson team and table officials came over genuinely concerned about their vanquished opponents.

“Kailangan mag-regroup,” Dulay said to me after the game. He surveyed his bench. He already knew that Pascual’s injury was serious. Any time you cannot walk off the court under your own power has got to be bad. Who will step up and play the net for blocks and sky for spikes and dinks?

It’s hard to fathom these things. Charo Soriano, Patty Taganas, and Bello came back for one last year thinking that they could sneak in an opportunity for one last title drive. And now the fickle hand of fate has put the whole season is in jeopardy. The Blue Babble Battalion even in the face of mournful defeat cheer “defense” and “one big fight.” And in this terrible loss, a sullen tribute of the alma mater. I never liked the emphasis on “win or lose it’s the school we choose” but if I wasn’t busy trying to help the fallen Pascual onto a stretcher, I swear I’d have a tear in my eye.

But these are resilient women. They’ve toiled in anonymity and played to near empty gyms. It might have been a bad day but this just might be the moment where they turn the season around.

Let's credit the Lady Eagles. They damn gave a good fight against FEU even though Patti is off, Karla is not playing and Bea just got injured. Crystal had no problems adjusting in the middle area. In fact, she's more comfortable in the middle scoring more points this time. Averil Paje is a revelation. She's a good digger naman pala. :)

Guest player Kanchana is taken out on a stretcher after suffering from painful back spasms.

Charo Soriano sustains a shoulder injury but continues to play on. This is the first time I've seen a player go up in the frontline with only one arm raised.

Patti Taganas suffers a knee injury during the third set in the crucial knockout match with UST. The rest of the Lady Eagles valiantly rally to win that set but UST is not to be denied the victory and the eventual crown against San Sebastian.

Bea Pascual suffers a season-ending ACL injury in a game against Adamson.

In that same game, Karla Bello suffers a sprained ankle which puts her out of the commision for the next game. She is still not 100% fit as Trisha Limgenco has largely taken over the setting chores.

With Ateneo's blocking at the net crippled by Pascual's injury and Crystal Ballentyne's rawness, Charo Soriano is forced to go for digs in the backline once the opponent's spikes pierce the porous net defense.

In the game against UP, she almost crashed into the railings diving and going after a wayward ball.

With Ateneo's over dependence on Charo to score the points aside from blocking, receiving and digging, not to mention the leadership, imagine what would happen, God forbid, if some misfortune befalls her.

Sana huwag naman.

The strain of her doing tons of work for the Ateneo burdened her. When she was receiving a service which she hopped a bit when she landed she immediately arched in pain. Apparently, cramps daw.

I agree!! she was a monster in their game against dlsu although they lost that match, no one can stop charo. too bad she got injured. if she was just well during that 4th set, maybe..just maybe they could've salvaged that match. but anyway, they cant dwell in the past. they should win their last 3 games to somehow ensure the final 4 spot or if not a playoff against lasalle. im glad patti taganas somehow stepped up but it was not enough.I hope Kara acevedo will have a great game ahead. The giddiness brought by early wins in the women’s volleyball tournament seems like a long time ago. With several injuries to key players that have prevented them from running at full tilt and a couple of huge meltdowns it has become perilously close in the words of one veteran watcher, “to becoming a jinxed year.”

And with the team falling to fifth place after losing to La Salle in their eleventh match of the season, the days are slipping by real fast with so few games left to spare. Time may be running out on their best bet to compete for a championship. And these are the last days before the team rebuilds after it will be losing more than their three super seniors who came in together in 2004.

So the De La Salle Lady Spikers met their counterparts from Ateneo. The league’s best blocking team versus the league’s most perplexing team. Yes, sadly it is so for you’ll never know which Ateneo team will show up. Will it be the team that shocked powerful UST by taking the first set before faltering? Will it be the team that put the fear of the Almighty in the giant-killing FEU team before succumbing to a heartbreaking fifth set loss? But does anyone remember those games? The season that was dubbed early on as a farewell party for those loveable favorites BST (Bello, Soriano & Taganas) & Company will also be partly remembered for Bea Pascual’s unfortunate injury and the other injuries that have hobbled the team and had an affect on their performance.

But if it isn’t that gritty team of Ateneo Lady Spikers who gives it that old one big fight, will it be the one that didn’t show up twice against Adamson?

The two teams are heading in separate directions. While DLSU coach Ramil De Jesus’ team is gathering momentum, Ronald Dulay’s squad is heading… well, it’s anyone’s guess and it depends on what happens. Unfortunately matters aren’t exactly in their own hands.

Ateneo on the other hand still has to face UP, NU, and FEU. In case you’ve just emerged from a remote Pacific island, none of them – even the game against the Lady Bulldogs – is a sure winner. There’s the saying after all, bilog ang bola. Go ask the Ateneo men’s team. They know it all too well.

They also have to closely monitor the fate of DLSU which will go through the eye of the needle with FEU and UST waiting in the wings.
Even if Ateneo makes it to the final four, the established goal all season long, why stop there? The team has to play better lest it become a sparring partner for the powerhouse teams.

Against La Salle, the defense wasn’t that good. The receiving was terrible (it added to the 23 points won by DLSU on errors). For a while there the only points were coming from two players: Charo Soriano and Crystal Ballentyne. Cara Acevedo and Patty Taganas later picked up with their points to help the team battle back, but the game was a complete reversal of their first round match against La Salle.

After the game, we waited for a few of the players to come out of the dugout (we weren’t going in lest we be finagled as peeping tom wannabes) to offer some encouragement. Kaya pa. Laban lang. They nodded and managed painful smiles (understandably so since they were coming off another loss).

But you wonder if they believe in it.

UP’s on deck this weekend and it’s now or never.

Charo Soriano making waves in the UAAP

Maria Rosario Soriano. This pretty morena girl is not the just your ordinary UAAP volleyball player. She can spike hard, dig hard balls, serve well. Not only that, she is not just a good volleyball player but is one of the players who can be considered as a “renaissance” woman as she is smart, articulate, rich, beautiful, has a lot of fans and has a good body built. It is no wonder that Charo Soriano has a lot of fans in and out of the university. (Look at her smile. She looks glaring! Promise.) Besides, she is actually becoming one of the most prominent personality or students in the university because of her height and stance. Of course, another thing that people won’t forget about her is her “Shara-povic Shriek” which is probably the loudest shriek in the collegiate volley tourney. If you followed her, she already starred in a commercial in Shakey’s. Just few days back, she has also signed up with Nike as official endorser of their product together with teammate Trish Limgenco.

Anyway, back to game face.

Charo Soriano currently averages 18 points per game in the UAAP. Far from her lackadaisical performance last year and in V-League Summer Edition. However, after her injury in the Summer Edition of V-League, things have quite gone well for Charo. Before going to Thailand, Charo and partner Patti Taganas made it to the Finals of Petron Beach Volleyball 2nd Leg with the tandem of PCU’s Lani Cervantes and Arlene Bernardo. Months after, she and Patti Taganas went on to end up as runner-up or 2nd place in the UAAP Women’s Beach Volleyball Tournament losing to the much experienced tandem of FEU’s Wendy Semana and Shai Gonzalez. She spent two weeks of her semestral break training with the Ateneo Lady Spikers in Thailand. There she experienced how hardcore volleyball training was like and how things really work in volleyball. Charo then had a big bang here in the Philippines right after they came back after upsetting then-defending champions UST Tigresses in 5 sets. The awe-inspiring performance of Charo continued as she went on to be Ateneo’s best player of the game for 6 times. At the end of Shakey’s V-League tournament, Charo Soriano was the #7 in Scoring or in the MVP Race besting out other college people (#1 was Kesinee, the Guest Player of Ateneo, #2 was Bualee of San Sebastian, #3 was Bautista of Adamson, #4 was Roces of UST, #5 was Carrillo of Lyceum, and #6 was Venus Bernal of UST). She also received the 100Plus Most Energetic Player Award because of her showing during last conference.

It was a few years back when she won the UAAP Rookie of the Year Award and now, after 4 years, she currently tops the Scoring and Digging department as well as being #4 in Blocking and #2 in Receiving and is probably the leading candidate for the Most Valuable Player Award, a thing that no Atenean volleybelle has achieved before. Aside from that, she is tagged as one of the most sensational or versatile players of the country because aside from her current position, which is as Middle Blocker, she can also play Open Spiker, which she did during the V-League and Libero because of the inevitable digging and receiving she does. By the way, to reiterate, in terms of defense, she ranks #1 in Digging and #2 in Receiving. She even beat the Liberos of UAAP.

It’s amazing to note that Charo Soriano is probably one of the girls who really are dedicated and loves volleyball. There was an instance in the V-League last Summer Edition wherein she was hit by a certain sponsor board and still begged her coach to play just to help her team win. Just few days back, this happened again. She got cramps in their game against La Salle. In fact, she was sent out because of the terrible pain she experienced but begged again to come back in the later part of the 4th set and even scored a point. Here you can see how much Charo loves the sport and the school that she would risk her life just for the fans, supporters and for the sport.

The Final Four System in UAAP Volleyball was only introduced in the early 2000s and in those 7 or 8 years, Ateneo has never reached the Final Four. The closest was last year, when they almost made it but didn’t because of losing to UP Lady Maroons in a thrilling 5 set match which included one of the longest rallies in UAAP that reached to 39-37 in scoring. Of course, this is the target of the Ateneo Lady Eagles; to make history as the first Ateneo team to make it to the Final Four. Last Sunday, after their win against NU, Charo Soriano was interviewed if she really wants to win the MVP or does the MVP Award matter to her. Charo replied, “I’d rather see my team going to the final four than see myself getting the MVP award. For me MVP is just a bonus. I want to make history for Ateneo.”

Kudos to Karla Bello. I just thought that she should've be the best player because of her good sets to her teammates. ofcourse,im not taking anything against Charo but i think Karla deserves it more.

well, its not only charo whose scoring on that game. acevedo also add alot of points and patti and the rest actually.. so it has somthing to do with the variations of sets. even ronnie magsanoc said that bello was trying to help the team quietly.

anyway, it doesn't really matter whose the best player as long as ateneo wins..ok ako dun..hehe.

with the recent development on alarca and with the entry of ADMU in the final 4, i think charo soriano is already shoo-in to win the MVP. aside from the fact that she leads in statistical department, i think one factor that what makes her most valuable is the fact that she was able to bring ADMU to its first final four appearance. without soriano, ADMU will not be that successful.

Let's consider the other contender and how valuable they are in their respective team:

Bernal - even if you take bernal out of UST, it will still be a competitive team
Balse - the same analogy as bernal
Laguilles - ganun din
Daquis - ganun din and they have already proven that nung mga unang laban nila.

But in the case of soriano, tangalin mo siya sa ADMU, sure, they can win a game or two pero am sure they will not enter the final 4 and that what makes her a valuable player
