View Full Version : Heartwarming Incidents in the UAAP
last.dodo.bird

I've always believed that the sports has always brought out the best and worst in people. The UAAP is no exception.
Yung "the best" is easily seen on the playing court - when players play their heart out and lay everything on the line.
Yung "the worst" is also easily seen on the playing court - when fights start, tempers flare and emotions get the better of people.
Off the court, kita din ang the best and worst sa mga fans. Yun nga lang, parang lately, panay negative things nalang ang nah-highlight.
Let's try to make this thread an avenue to highlight the heartwarming things that could be noted from this season and the past season. This doesn't just apply to basketball. LAHAT ng UAAP sports kasama dito. Any incident from any sport from this or any of the past seasons...
Sana wag maging trollfest ito.
Sana wag maging "pataasan ng ihi" ito.
And if ever this thread quickly sinks down into the archives and dies a natural death... then maybe that's a sign na there are more negative things happening lately in the UAAP as compared to those that are heartwarming and everyone could be proud of...

Every La Salle-Ateneo game, wala tong kupas, sino manalo and matalo, the other crowd clap their hands as a sign of sportsmanship when the opposing crowd sing their Alma Mater. For me, this is very heartwarming.*okay*

During the Ateneo-FEU game, second round na yata un.
2 players from both Team Fall tapos the rest of the Players (from team) help them get up. hindi lang *** teammates nila *** tinulungan nila pati na rin *** kalaban nila na natumba.
Nung tapos na *** laban, Knuttle (FEU) hug Chris Tiu, tapos si Baclao may niyakap ding taga FEU.
Ang sarap nilang panoorin! Bati-bati sila after the game.

also in volleyball, when rachel daquis cried when feu lost to ust in game 2 of the finals last feb...
norman black showed emotion after their second round win vs dlsu...
in swimming sa trace, on day 1...luica dacanay was struggling na makaakyat sa starting block because of her sprained knee, maawa ka sa kanya...pero in the end she ended up victorious...
in cheerdance...when magsama ang feu and up sa halftime in the first round...unity cheer...

Remaining silent as a sign of respect and courtesy while the opposing school community sing their alma mater song...then clapping and applauding for both victor and vanquished.
Players and coaches from opposing benches approach each other to offer handshakes for a good game for both the victors and the vanquished.
Players from La Salle approaching Larry Fonacier on the bench to wish him speedy recovery from his ACL injury; Mark Cardona hugging Larry Fonacier at the end of after an ADMU-DLSU game since Larry Fonacier ended his UAAP career on his ACL injury.
BJ Manalo of DLSU and Enrico Villanueva of ADMU hugging each at the end of the championship series in 2001 (DLSU champion) and 2002 (ADMU champion)
Coach Pido Jarencio in tears after the loss to ADMU which dethroned the defending champion UST.
UST players in tears after the Doug Kramer buzzer beater.
ADMU players in tears after UST won the championship last year.
FEU players in tears after ADMU eliminated them as defending champions last year.
UE players in tears after UST beat them last year to enter the finals.

'Behave,' UST urges UAAP basketball fans
UAAP host University of Santo Tomas (UST) is urging the three schools still in the tournament to ask their supporters to behave, noting several rowdy off-court incidents in the past month of the men's basketball championship.
In a statement on Monday, UST secretary-treasurer Felicitas Francisco, alarmed by exhibitions of "hooliganism," urged all leaders of the University of the East, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University to instill on supporters "good behavior in the last two weeks of the tournament."
In one incident last Sunday, UAAP commissioner Ed Cordero and an Ateneo fan had to be extricated at the end of the Ateneo vs UST knockout game after the Ateneo alumnus taunted Cordero while he and his crew were exiting the playing court.
"There are some alumni who really don't behave the way they have been educated," Francisco said. "Let these games be an avenue for further camaraderie among schools, their alumni, and students, not for hooliganism."
Cordero had identified the heckler and will write the UAAP board this week to ask that the person be banned from sitting near court side. Francisco believes that Cordero has a case.
Francisco was also infuriated when some UST faculty who had purchased tickets belonging to Ateneo's side of the Big Dome were asked to "leave by fans of the other school when the game had started."
Incidentally, Francisco's call comes on the heels of the UAAP technical committee's reminder to La Salle officials to address this problem after students from their school were seen applauding Brian Ilad though he was ejected for punching Mark Fampulme of the University of the East last week.
Ilad was meted a five-game ban but has appealed the sanction to the UAAP board. - GMANews.TV

When Coach Pido kinda ran his hand over Ababou's face aftter Dylan committed a turnover. Parang sinasabi niya "Kalimutan mo na yun, maglaro ka na!" hehehehe... It looked like such a fatherly gesture. Nakatawa pa si Pido when he did it and Dylan had this sheepish grin...

Oo nga e, napansin mo din pala yon. :) "Old reliable" talaga ni coach Pido si Ababou, malaki tiwala nya sa batang yun. All out, all the time kasi. Nakaka goosebumps at nakaka lambot ng puso, sa gitna ng matindihang bakbakan sa loob ng court.
Yung muntik na akong mapa iyak na din, nun last year UE-UST do or die game. Siempre nagtatalon ako sa tuwa dahil panalo USTe, pero nung makita ko yung captain ball ng UE na halos himatayin na sa sama ng loob, naawa ako. :( Si Rob Labagala ata yun. Final year na nya kasi, tapos twice to beat pa sila. Dito yung infamous Bonbon Custodio incident. Kawawa talaga, binigay talaga lahat, may chance pa silang manalo, minalas lang sa final play.

Nung 1988 championship game against Ateneo, Dindo Pumaren, in his final year as a DLSU Green Archer, was in a similar situation. In frustration, he punched the floor. Tuwang tuwa naman sina Jun Reyes at Danny Francisco na napaiyak din sa tuwa.

yung paglapit at pag-congratulate ng UST salinggawi sa UP pep squad right after the winners were announced.

kahit sabihin mong mag-kalaban it still ends as a friendly competition...
share ko lang...back in my highschool days i joined the pep squad in our school and our coach was from up...(nag-champion school namin in various cheering competition like JnJ cheering comp)...nung magcocollege na kame our coach asked kung san kame papasok...i said UST po and he told me if i wanted to join Salinggawi kasi daw kilala nya yung mga peeps dun...back then wala akong idea kung gaano katindi ang rivalry ng up-ust and when i entered college dun ko lang naintindihan...i even saw my coach competing for up sa cdc that year...
nakakatuwa lang malaman na may ibang up pep and gawi na in real life are real friends...hehehe...*okay*

uhm...although hindi sila yung mismong tumutugtog i could see them na sumasabay sa go uste...hehe...ive seen it...pero mga later part na yun...minsan kasi sa super overwhelming ng feeling hindi na natin napapansin yung ginagawa ng iba ryt after ng announcement of winners...pero infairness this year lang ako nakasabay sa cheer ng up...correct me if im wrong kc nung past years pag uste champion di na sila masyado nagchee2r after ng announcement of winners...
no offense po ah...anyway goodluck sa admu & dlsu later...hope to see a good fight!!

game 2 admu-dlsu season 70. I was seated 2 seats away from a lady who was later identified to be jai reyes' grandma. She had been confined at the hospital and just made it a point to see the game. For the better part of the game, she was seated quietly , but, lo and behold, during the dying minutes of the game, she found the strength to cheer her grandson on... amazing!!!

Yesterday's game in itself (victory aside) was heartwarming. No unsportsmanlike behavior from players of either team and when players would fall, they were helped up by teammates and opponents alike.
Pressure brings out the best and worst in people. It was indeed heartwarming to see that yesterday, the best from both teams was showcased.

Im teary eyed while reading the posts here. Atleast there's a thread like this na wala kang makikitang school bashing. Anyway I was really touched and I almost cried when coach pido cried after they lost to ADMU. And whenever he shadows japs kapag nasa free throw line na. HIt seems na di lang siya nagiging coach sa mga players niya but also a father to all of them.... Dapat ang coach of the year is being gauge sa ganun di lang sa pagkakapanalo ng championship. :)

FEU, La Salle, Adamson, and Ateneo (not sure) drummers joining the UP Drummers in beating the "U-nibersidad ng Pilipinas!" after UP Pep was declared king again of the CDC.
Later, UE drummers and students doing their rendition. Lastly, UST YJ and students doing the "U-nibersidad" themselves.
To me, it means they recognize the new champions.
Then, we doing the "Go USTe!".

just after the game this afternoon and with the coliseum about 80% empty, the DLSU Pep squad made their rendition of "Go Ateneo", with most of the lasallians cheering.
as a show of respect and appreciation of the BBB, they made their rendition of one of the drumbeats of la salle (i don't know the title but it's a drumbeat that is not accompanied by a cheer).
and i think the lasallians clapped their hands in appreciation.
i never thought i would see the day i will be cheering for ateneo and vice versa.

Coach Aric del Rosario comforting his weeping boys way back 1997.
yeah i remember this one! but i think this was in 1998. ust was champion from 1993-1997. la salle was the bridesmaid to ust for 3 straight years (1994-1997). so, in 1998 ust & la salle met in the final four & la salle finally got rid of ghosts past by defeating ust. ust players were crying & sulking on the bench, but you could see the crying coach aric going into the middle of the court, faced the jubilant la salle crowd & started clapping. he even pulled his players from the bench & brought them to the middle of the court to join him in clapping for la salle.

during the game of la salle - ateneo to get the twice to beat advantage, ford arao did not even help a la salle player after he fouled the la salle guy causing a very bad fall, but during the dying seconds of the game, kirk long had to foul jvee casio and jvee had a bad fall. kirk long, inspite of his frustration that they were losing the game, still went out of his way to help jvee up. that was so nice of kirk long, he should teach that to arao.

No it was in 1997. UST's 4-peat was from 1993-1996. I think FEU won the championship in 1997.La Salle was indeed the bridesmaid from 1994-1996 (that's 3 years) DLSU & UST met in 1997 for the final 4 and UST lost.
But you're right about Coach Aric pulling his boys to accept defeat graciously. And I read somewhere na sinabi ni Coach Aric.."Huwag kayong umiyak..." Encouraging tone. Love Coach Aric and Coach Pido!! (hehe! I just have to say that!)

Nakakatuwa, after the knockout game between Admu and Uste nahighlight yung statement ni coach pido na:
"never i- underestimate ang pusong atenista"
Tapos nito, nasa Ateneo website na yun (Blue Eagles Bulletin #16- Live and let die). Nakakataba ng puso yung sinulat ng batikang Rick Olivares na--
Last year, I wrote that Jarencio was a very good coach who got a previously underachieving team to raise their game. The Tigers, despite losing last year’s finals MVP Jojo Duncil one week before the start of the season, eventually found their groove and gave everyone fits. And borrowing a line from the Ateneo Blue Eagles circa 1988 -- great champions die hard – the game was no walk in the park for the Blue Eagles. And ever the classy coach, Jarencio, paid tribute to Ateneo after the game. “Never i-underestimate ang pusong Atenista (Never underestimate the heart of an Atenean).”
Sa kabila ng matinding iringan, malalim ang respeto ng bawat isang komunidad.
Mabuhay ang edukasyong Heswita at Dominikano!*okay*

Heartwarming incidents i love from UAAP....
When FEU won the championship over ADMU.That year the press tagged it as HOLY War.why?bec.Koy Banal is coaching FEU while the other Banal brother is coaching ADMU (forgive me i forgot his name). After that game they hugged each other tight.i hope i could see it on this years UE-La Salle from the Pumaren brothers.
When FEU Lady Tamaraws lost to UST in a Championship game against UST in volleyball on Season 69.Seeing Rachel Daquis in tears while singing the school hymm and seeing the Lady Tams hug each other, comforting each other after the game is reallly a heartwarming experience.
When ADMU won over ADU its special bec.LA Fonacier is already injured back then. The crowd from ADMU is really amazing, the ADMU players offered that game for Fonacier.and how i forget the last shot of Tenorio during that game.
When JV Casio made a three point shot defeating FEU in Championship game bec.Dennis Miranda missed the last shot.Seeing the Big Boys of FEU (Santos,Miranda,Isip,Chan et al.) teary eyed is really something....
to the threadstarter, thank you for making me teary eyed reading this thread...:mecry: :mecry:

and also, habang nakapila for tix, nagulat ako kasi there was one lasallian i assume (wearing green) who approached me, saying "pumipila ka ba for tickets?" when i said yes, he just gave me an extra ticket and left... my friend also saw that, and she said he might be my good graces, and something good might happen for lasalle... i was meant to witness the game... and guess what, we won the championship!

Nakakatuwa talaga si Coach Pido. Haha.
This isn't really a heartwarming moment, but during the game where UST eliminated FEU from the finals, just before Mirza made a 3-pointer, Coach Pido told him off court:
"Pag di mo nakuha to, suntukin kita!"
Pinakita lang sa TV and it wasn't even audible, but you could really read his lips. Guess what? It worked! Mirza got the three. ^_^

Seated at the La Salle gallery along with fellow La Sallians, I was pretty amazed that during the pre-game awarding ceremony...as each awardee was called to the center of the court to receive their awards, the ENTIRE La Salle gallery (lead by the DLSU pep squad) chanted to "Go UST-eh!", "Go Ateneo!" and "NU! NU!", as their respective players were called. You don't get to see that every game!

in one of the DLSU vs ADMU games, JV Casio missed a shot in the dying seconds of the game, he ran to the other end of the court and sat on the floor, under the ring, frustrated... I felt how much he wanted to win...
and then while he was singing the DLSU hymn last Sunday, seeing him teary-eyed...

This did not happen in the UAAP but it is too good a story to pass up so I'm sharing it nonetheless. I don't remember if I got it from one of those Chicken Soup for the Soul books.
There was a footrace in a sportsfest held for special children.
Shortly after the kids took off from the starting line, one of the participants tripped and fell down. The others immediately stopped and went back to console the crying kid.
Then one of them suggested, "Everyone, let's hold hands..."
Imagine the scene as the kids held hands and together as one walked all the way to the finish line to the cheers of the spectators!
I hope too that this thread will never be forgotten. *okay*

during the time admu won the crown after beating dlsu, when enrico and bj hugged each other as a truce and sign of peace after bj's transfer to dlsu. the student body of AHS were enraged upon the transfer of bj to dlsu and some players even wanted to get back at him on the hradcourt. it was just nice to see that these two former teammates turned hardcore rivals found it in their hearts to cast away the anger and just congratulate each other putting an end to the scuffle between them.

yes, i'm glad there's a thread like this...
oh well yeah, it's really best when both sides players, coaching staff, and supporters would be applauding each other after each game..
sure there are alot of badmouthing and bashing during the game, but it all boils down to school spirit and high competition...but after all is said and done...when there's a winner and loser...it goes to sportsmanship...
congratulating each other and other positive gestures between them...
too bad i'm the only one who does that in the family...everytime i lose, my siblings taunt me...and if i win, they're bitter...oh well...
we're gracious in defeat and humble in victory...
that's how it should go down...

La Salle and Ateneo traded drumbeats after the game.
LS played Ateneo drumbeats and vice versa.
just after the game this afternoon and with the coliseum about 80% empty, the DLSU Pep squad made their rendition of "Go Ateneo", with most of the lasallians cheering.
as a show of respect and appreciation of the BBB, they made their rendition of one of the drumbeats of la salle (i don't know the title but it's a drumbeat that is not accompanied by a cheer).
and i think the lasallians clapped their hands in appreciation.
i never thought i would see the day i will be cheering for ateneo and vice versa.

after the 2002 finals game3 wherein ateneo won the championship title, wesley, larry and BJ of dlsu hugged each other [group hug]. BJ was from dlsu but as we all know he studied in ateneo grade and high school and was a star player back then alongside his close friend enrico villanueva. and then moments later, rico and BJ hugged even tighter than BJ's previous hug with larry and wes. after the game, i never saw BJ weeping because of sadness like the other lasallians. [maybe he felt sad but he didn't show it]
i think it was really heartwarming to see a friendship despite the very intriguing change of school of BJ which was said to hurt rico when he heard about it [http://www.geocities.com/ilovebj12/star.html] and the fact that the school where BJ decided to go to is the arch rival of his previous school.

There was a sequence when RicoM fell down in Game 1 of this year's finals and Yuri readily offer him a helping hand getting up. *okay* AND, Rico took it too.
I just mention this since I rarely see a player extend his hand to help up an opponent, and it's especially rare that the opponent accepts... lalo na pag kasing-bitter na rivalry tulad ng Ateneo-LaSalle.

I just read an article about the on-court celebration of Ateneo. Heartwarming yung hug ni Norman Black on his MVP while saying thank you. And the MVP replied, "No. Thank you coach."
I also want to mention that Ford Arao was wearing a Mike Baldos jersey with Yuri Escueta's number on it. Both are Ford's best longtime friends. Mike and Yuri told Ford, "Para sa iyo to". For replied, "Para sa community ito."
But what I found more heartwarming was the crowd's appreciation on Nonoy Baclao. Paminsan ka lang makakita ng player na sobrang inaadore ng crowd because of defense. Unlike Chris who won his adoration because of his perfection and Larry who won it because of his skills and humility. I read Noy's life story. He grew up in Bacolod. He always dreamed of playing in the big teams like Ateneo and La Salle. Now he's reached his dream and won a trophy to add up. Minsan lang kasi narerecognize ang defense sa basketball. There's a saying "Offense wins fame/girls, defense wins games/championships." Well, Baclao got the best of both worlds. He won both the fame and recognition by winning FINALS MVP and the chamionship.

The ones that stuck to my memory.
-Ken Bono raising his arm after losing to Ateneo in the Final 4 in 2006 accepting defeat.
-The UST YJ's and the Ateneo BBB Exchanged drum beats before game 1 of the 2006 UAAP Finals. The BBB played 'Go USTe' while the UST Crowd cheered and the BBB played 'Go Ateneo' while the Ateneo Crowd cheered.
-JC Intal,Doug Kramer and Macky Escalona sharing a group hug after they lost to UST in the Finals of 2006 which was their last game.
-The UST crowd clapping to the beat of the drums during "A Song for Mary" after The Tigers beat the Eagles during the 2006 UAAP Finals.
-Jai Reyes crying after they beat La Salle in their 2nd round mathcup in Season 70.
-Cholo Villanueva in tears after DLSU won the title in season 70.
-Jervy Cruz, during his final UAAP game, weeping while singing our Alma Mater song.
-Coach Aboy Castro also in tears while singing UP's Alma Mater song.
-Chris Tiu and Al-Hussaini hugging after winning the title.
-Ryan Buenafe in tears saying "Apat pa!!"
-Jvee Casio saluting the crowd after his final game.

Back in 1994, I was watching the juniors game between Ateneo and DLSZ. I remember Tonichi Pinzon had a breakaway fastbreak lay-up. When Pinzon landed, he could not get up because he suddenly got stricken with leg cramps. He was grimacing in pain on the baseline just near the DLSZ bench. The game was not stopped because it was possession for DLSZ so the game went on. But while it was 5 on 4 for DLSZ on offense on the other end, it was amazing to see that back where Pinzon lay near the DLSZ bench, there was, for everyone to see, a DLSZ player who got off the bench to attend to Pinzon and administer first aid for cramps.
Does anyone remember this? I wonder who that DLSZ player was? If I am not mistaken, it was the team of Aldeguer, Hizon, Mark Reyes, Mike Maglipon, and Paolo Trillo. The last three eventually went to Ateneo for college.

Hey I saw this too.
Yuri reminds me of JV. Parang magkamukha sila or something. Haha.

Back in season 68 (?), I was seated beside an ateneo fan as we watched a crucial ADMU-FEU tiff that would send AdU's hopes of grabbing its 1st Final 4 in shambles if the Eagles lose. AdU had earlier hurdled NU and was waiting in the wings for the 2nd game result to decide its fate.
On the dying seconds when FEU led by 1 point, JC intal drove for a lethal dagger that won the game for ADMU. Almost instantaneously after the shot, the Atenean gave me a friendly look then raised his left hand for a high five that I generously returned with my own high five, a friendly smile and the words "thank you, sir.".*okay*

There was already some commotion just before Rabeh scored to bring the tally to 71, then Rolly Manlapaz didn't call Rabeh's name, which was immediately unusual. When UP brought the ball inbound, Aboy Castro seemed to be motioning to the player with the ball (forgot which) to give the ball to him, forcing the officials' timeout and giving time for Arvin to rush up. And then I noticed Buenafe pointing towards the gallery.
It was nice for both sides to be respectful during the incident—it wasn't a time to be smart-alecky; I think everyone was just in a worried hush. The players and coaching staff of both teams were also huddled in prayer.
